Arrival in Montreux

Coming from Zurich, you can reach Montreux with the SBB in less than three hours. The return trip with the

GoldenPass can start with local explorations to then enjoy a panoramic tour.

The 210 kilometers from Lucerne to Montreux offer a breathtaking experience. The route leads over three mountain passes, along the famous four-thousanders of the Alps and eight lakes. The magnificent landscape offers many excursion opportunities. Unlike the traditional routes of the Bernina and Glacier Express, you change trains twice along the way. The travel time from Lucerne to Montreux is about five hours.

From Lucerne, take the Lucerne-Interlaken Express, operated by the Zentralbahn, to Interlaken Ost.

On the route from Interlaken to Zweisimmen, the BLS RegioExpress operates.

From Zweisimmen to Montreux, you can travel either with the GoldenPass Classic or the GoldenPass Panoramic.

By the end of 2022, it should be ready, and the entire journey will be possible without changing trains. In

Zweisimmen, the bogie of the cars switches from meter gauge (1m) to 1.435m standard gauge. At the same time, the cars are raised from a platform height of 35cm to 55cm. On the return trip, this happens in reverse, of course.

The new GoldenPass Express was designed by Pininfarina and impresses with its modern appearance. The vehicles are built by the Swiss train manufacturer Stadler in Bussnang (TG).

The new GoldenPass Express will be equipped with compartments in 1st and 2nd class and also feature eighteen seats in the Prestige class. Since the seats in the Prestige class are rotatable, they offer travelers the best possible view.

In Switzerland, many small private railways were founded. The creation of the BLS also came about through the merger of various railways. From Zweisimmen to Interlaken Ost, the journey takes one hour and eleven minutes.

From Interlaken, you can reach the “Top of Europe” with the Jungfrau Railway. For an excursion to the Jungfrau, you should definitely plan a whole day.

BLS, whose full name is BLS Lötschbergbahn AG, stands for Bern—Lötschberg—Simplon.

The Lucerne-Interlaken Express connects Interlaken with Lucerne. The modern trains of the Zentralbahn take one hour and fifty minutes for the journey.

The route runs along many lakes and passes scenic highlights such as waterfalls, idyllic villages, and sights. Switzerland shows itself along this route from one of its most beautiful sides.

TRAIN DU CHOCOLAT

The golden age of the railway is omnipresent in the chocolate train, the Chocolate Train (Train du Chocolat). Comfortable upholstered seats, heavy carpets, and fine wood paneling convey the impression of first class.

Here, you experience up close how comfortable and stylish you can travel by train. The ride with this set is an indescribable experience.

TRAIN DU CHOCOLAT

The first section of the “Train du Chocolat” leads from Montreux on the impressive GoldenPass Route through the Tunnel des Les Avants to Montbovon.

From Montbovon, continue with the comfortable “Chocolate Bus” to the medieval town of Gruyères. The Château de Gruyères, built in the 13th century, houses the H.R. Giger Museum with artworks from the film “Alien”. Here, the famous cheese of the region, “Gruyères AOP”, is produced.

The last station is the chocolate factory “Maisons Cailler-Nestlé” in Broc. Visitors await an irresistible tasting from the chocolate masters.

The GoldenPass Classic is equipped with nostalgic cars and travels through the picture-book region. Train travelers are served a large portion of railway flair from days long past in these trains. The GoldenPass Classic connects the world-famous places in the region.

Whether in the rolling restaurant or in the salon car, the GoldenPass Classic is simply in a class of its own. In the restaurant car, you can refresh yourself or simply enjoy a drink while the landscape leisurely passes by.

CLASSIC PANORAMA

The scenic beauty combined with innovative engineers made it possible to build railway cars in such a way that you feel like you're flying through the landscape. GoldenPass has always been a pioneer of panoramic trains, and passengers love this line for it.

PANORAMA

This type of panoramic train offers passengers the opportunity to sit right at the front and enjoy a view that is not found in conventional trains. The cars are also panoramic cars with large windows; with the Panorama, you simply become part of the landscape.

The train driver sits “above things”. Right above the panoramic seats in the frontmost train area is the driver's cabin.

PANORAMA VIP

The next generation of the Panorama is the Panorama VIP. The modern and streamlined design is not tuned for high speed, but for optimal views. As with all panoramic trains, in the Panorama VIP, the locomotive is in the middle and the train driver is above the passengers.

ROCHERS DE NAYE

Steam shipping on Lake Thun began as early as 1835. Over the years, horsedrawn railways were added. In 1913, the success story of the BLS began with the electric Lötschberg Railway. Today, the company operates train, bus, and shipping lines.

Bernese Oberland at about 1,000 meters above sea level. International tennis, beach volleyball, and polo tournaments follow one another in the fashionable Gstaad. The town has been car-free since 1998. Many

their holidays in the village of chalets.

RÖSTIGRABEN

At the border of the cantons of Vaud (Waadt) and Bern, you cross the so-called “Röstigraben”. On one side, French is spoken, and on the other, German.

The Rösti themselves were invented, depending on the story, by the German-speaking Swiss, or as “pommes de terre fricassées” by the Romands.

Public Transport

BUSES

Line 201 is operated by VMCV (Transports publics Vevey—Montreux—Chillon—Villeneuve). The trolleybuses connect Vevey, La Tour-de-Peilz, Montreux, Veytaux,

and Villeneuve. During the day, the buses run every ten minutes; after 8 PM, this interval changes to 20 minutes.

FUNICULAR

Funiculars form an important type of transport in the Montreux area. Three such systems operate here: Territet—Glion, Les Avants—Sonloup, and Vevey— Chardonne—Mont-Pèlerin. These railways, very popular

with tourists, also have great importance in daily life for the population.

SHIPPING

On Lake Geneva, the largest inland lake in Central Europe, special Belle Époque ships have been operating for over 140 years. The landing stages are mostly in tourist-attractive places. With the ships, you can reach

places like Geneva, Lausanne/Evian, Vevey, Montreux, and St-Gingolph.
