The Christmas market in Bolzano traditionally begins on the Friday preceding the fi rst Sunday of Advent, welcoming guests to Walther Square.

South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology
At the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, visitors have the opportunity to undertake a remarkable journey through history: Here, Ötzi, the Iceman, is exhibited – a 5,300year-old glacier mummy from the Copper Age, preserved entirely with his original gear and clothing.
The couple Erika and Helmut Simon came across the mummy on 19 September 1991 while hiking in the Ötztal Alps. At first, the body was believed to belong to a mountaineer who had died in an accident. Following thorough examinations in Innsbruck, Ötzi was transferred to Bolzano because of the site where he was found. At the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, the mummy now rests permanently in a specially designed refrigerated chamber.
The museum showcases the captivating prehistory and early history of South Tyrol, spanning from the Paleolithic period to the Carolingian era over three floors. Interactive displays, detailed replicas, and up-to-date scientific insights into Ötzi’s life enrich the exhibition vividly.

Starting from Bolzano, it is possible to access the mountain terminal of the Ritten cable car, situated only a short distance from the historic Ritten narrow-gauge railway station. The line connecting Maria Himmelfahrt and Klobenstein covers a distance
In front of Klobenstein railway station, you will find a bronze statue created by the artist Franz Messner. It represents the "vain goat" looking at its own reflection.
of about 7 kilometres. The Ritten railway operates across the elevated plateau at a top speed of 30 km/h.
Throughout the Christmas period, the Ritten Railway adopts a special name, running temporarily as the "Christ Bahnl". The train is adorned with festive decorations to match the season.
On the Ritten plateau, you will find Europe’s highest and most remarkable earth pyramids forming a unique natural attraction: In the villages of Lengmoos, Oberbozen, and Unterinn, these nearly otherworldly clay formations can
be seen at three separate sites. A variety of hiking paths encourage visitors to discover the region at their own pace and according to their personal preferences.
Sigmund Freud, the pioneer of psychoanalysis, first discovered the Ritten plateau on an Easter excursion in 1911. He was so captivated by the area that he chose to spend the majority of his summer holiday that year at the Hotel Bemelmans-Post in Klobenstein. In September of
the same year, Freud marked his silver wedding anniversary at this location. To honour this memorable visit, the Freud Promenade was established, extending from Oberbozen through Lichtenstein to Klobenstein.
The Ritten Arena is a well-equipped sports and event facility located in Klobenstein. It offers an ice rink, an ice skating track, a fitness centre, a versatile sports field, as well as both small and large football pitches. The complex also features a restaurant with an adjoining meeting room, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a dedicated training area. Situated at an altitude of 1,200 metres and
benefiting from ideal water quality, this outdoor ice rink is regarded as the fastest in the world.
As a result, the Ritten Arena has gained popularity and international recognition as a preferred location for both training sessions and competitions.
