Kar aok e f or Can cer The National Community Oncology Dispensing Association (NCODA) successfully hosted its annual Karaoke for Cancer event, raising over $1400 to support cancer research and patient care initiatives. The event, sponsored by NCODA, brought together members of the community and healthcare professionals for an evening of music and fun, all aimed at fighting cancer. Participants showcased their vocal talents in a spirited karaoke competition, contributing to the fundraiser 's success through entry fees and donations.

APh A An n u al Gala The Student Chapter of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) held their annual Gala fund raiser and Wings over the Rockies. Funds raised will be invested in patient care projects, support student professional development , and facilitate the creation of innovative programs. The asylum ap p licat ion p rocess rem ains t he sam e, reg ard less of how an ind ivid ual ent ers t he count ry. How ever, t he p rim ary leg al m et hod for crossing t he b ord er t o ap p ly for asylum ? t hroug h t he Cust om s and Bord er Pat rol One ap p ? is fraug ht w it h challeng es t hat inad vert ent ly encourag es illeg al crossing s. The ap p, w hich is g eofenced t o funct ion only near t he Mexican b ord er, sup p ort s a lim it ed num b er of lang uag es, is incom p at ib le w it h p hones m anufact ured in China, and oft en has leng t hy w ait t im es.


In cit ies like Juarez, on t he Mexican sid e of t he b ord er, t he p resence of d rug cart els p oses ad d it ional risks as t hey freq uent ly t arg et and ext ort refug ees at t em p t ing t o ent er t he U.S. One of t he sig nificant d ifferences b et w een ent ering t he U.S. leg ally versus illeg ally is t hat leg al ent rant s receive a w ork p erm it im m ed iat ely, w hereas t hose w ho cross illeg ally face at least a 90 -d ay w ait for a w ork p erm it . Many ind ivid uals asp ire t o im m ig rat e t o t he U.S. in search of b et t er econom ic op p ort unit ies b ut m ay not m eet t he crit eria necessary t o q ualify for asylum . The leg al p rocess for im m ig rat ing t o t he U.S. and ob t aining p erm anent resid ent st at us is oft en leng t hy and t yp ically req uires ap p licant s t o b e skilled or t o have fam ily m em b ers alread y resid ing in t he U.S. as cit izens or p erm anent resid ent s. The num b er of visas availab le t o low -skilled ind ivid uals is not ab ly lim it ed . During d iscussions w it h Cust om s and Bord er Pat rol ag ent s, Dr. Lalam a w as st ruck by a sug g est ion t hat m any b ord er issues could b e alleviat ed by creat ing a low -skilled w orker visa p rog ram . Such p rog ram s have b een im p lem ent ed in t he U.S. in t he p ast w it h success. Inst it ut ing a p rog ram of t his nat ure could p rovid e em p loym ent op p ort unit ies for roles t hat are less ap p ealing t o current resid ent s, p ot ent ially red ucing t he incent ive for illeg al b ord er crossing s. This m ission t rip has fost ered d eep em p at hy for m ig rant s com ing t o t he U.S., coup led w it h sig nificant frust rat ion w it h t he im m ig rat ion syst em . A sylum seekers end ure an ard uous journey, p art icularly t hose t raversing t he p erilous Darien Gap from Sout h A m erica. Up on arrival in t he U.S., t hey face a less-t han-w elcom ing environm ent . The leg al ent ry p rocess is fraug ht w it h com p licat ions and m isinform at ion, w hich oft en confuses t he m ig rant s. Many d o not realize t he crit ical im p ort ance of t heir assig ned asylum court d at e. Ad d it ionally, log ist ical issues m ay arise, such as not b eing in t he cit y w here t heir court ap p oint m ent is sched uled . These ap p oint m ent s can b e resched uled or relocat ed , b ut oft en asylum seekers are unaw are of how t o navig at e t hese chang es, lead ing t o m issed court d at es and sub seq uent d ep ort at ions. There are several p ot ent ial im p rovem ent s t hat could st ream line t he im m ig rat ion p rocess, such as allocat ing m ore resources t o asylum court s t o red uce b acklog s and int rod ucing m ore leg al avenues for ap p lying for asylum b efore ent ering t he count ry. Unfort unat ely, t hese solut ions are oft en overlooked as m ost p olit icians hesit at e t o fully eng ag e w it h t he com p lexit ies of b ord er m anag em ent , p referring inst ead t o leverag e t he b roken syst em for p olit ical g ain.

Accom p anied by fellow P4 st ud ent Nick, w e vent ured t o Punt a Gord a, Belize, t o serve at Hillsid e Healt hcare Int ernat ional? a sm all, free healt hcare clinic t hat offers a rang e of services. Nest led in a rem ot e area, Hillsid e p rovid es crucial healt hcare from d aily hom e visit s and rout ine check-up s t o fam ily p lanning and m ob ile clinics in d ist ant villag es. This rot at ion w as not only ab out d isp ensing m ed icine b ut also ab out int eg rat ed healt hcare d elivery, w here w e w orked along sid e volunt eers from various m ed ical d iscip lines includ ing p hysician assist ant s, p hysical t herap ist s, and m ed ical d oct ors. One of t he m ost enriching asp ect s of t his exp erience w as t he op p ort unit y t o collab orat e in a set t ing w it h lim it ed resources. Oft en, w e found ourselves im p rovising t reat m ent s as t he id eal m ed icat ions or eq uip m ent w ere unavailab le. This environm ent sig nificant ly t est ed our know led g e and ad ap t ab ilit y, m aking each d ay a p rofound learning exp erience. We also encount ered uniq ue d isease st at es not com m only seen in t he U.S., such as scab ies and d eng ue fever. Each case p resent ed it s ow n set of challeng es, p art icularly w it h p at ient com p liance. Fact ors such as lim it ed resources, varying levels of healt h lit eracy, and cult ural b eliefs freq uent ly influenced p at ient s' accep t ance and ad herence t o t reat m ent p rot ocols. A not her log ist ical challeng e w as p lanning for t he m ob ile clinics. A nt icip at ing t he req uired m ed icat ions and sup p lies w as crit ical, as w e could only carry lim it ed q uant it ies. This oft en m eant t hat neig hb ors and fam ilies had t o share t he availab le m ed icat ions, ad d ing anot her layer of com p lexit y t o our m ission. Beyond t he clinical exp eriences, t he rot at ion w as d eep ly hum b ling and cult urally enriching . Living in Belize exp osed us t o a lifest yle st arkly d ifferent from t hat in t he Unit ed St at es, hig hlig ht ing t he luxuries w e oft en t ake for g rant ed . The ad vent ure ext end ed b eyond t he clinic, t oo. Our g roup had t he op p ort unit y t o exp lore Belize's rich cult ural herit ag e, includ ing sp elunking in sacred Mayan caves and visit ing ancient t em p les at Tikal. The local cuisine w as a d elig ht t o exp lore, w it h d ishes like fried b read fruit and b arracud a b ecom ing p ersonal favorit es.

Reflect ing on t his exp erience, it w as not hing short of "unBelizeab le." For any st ud ent seeking a b lend of ad vent ure and invaluab le p ract ical exp erience in g lob al healt h, such an op p ort unit y is t ruly t ransform at ive.

FACULTY ACTIVITIES Ram ad an Aw areness RHCHP Leadership and the Community for Belonging Committee proudly supported the organization of a Ramadan Awareness Table. Traditional Muslim treats, including dates, tea, and candy, were thoughtfully packaged into take-home bags and distributed to attendees.
