howcasing some of the most familiar, historic locations and beloved independent establishments across the town centre, RTW Together is capturing festive town centre scenes in Christmas card form with the help of celebrated local artist Jessica Harrison. A promotional project to support town centre businesses over the festive period, RTW Together has collaborated with Jess to create a series of illustrated Christmas

cards that will be available free of charge througbout the town centre, featuring local businesses, landmarks and locales. Jessica’s enchanting paintings of picturesque Chapel Place and The Pantiles are also being used to promote the town centre in festive adverts and promotional materials across the borough, and beyond. These heart warming scenes show both areas illuminated in festive lights, provided by RTW Together, with local residents walking their

dogs and peeking into local shop windows as snow begins to adorn the very tops of the buildings. Having already worked with RTW Together on the free Art Week colouring book, where her black and white illustrations were coloured in by hundreds who picked up the free publication, local artist Jess could use all the colours in her palette on our Christmas card project – and she certainly went to town! “Christmas is the most magical time of year, and I adore traditional and atmospheric Christmas scenes,” Jessica tells us. “I like the challenge of capturing the buildings, businesses and landmarks, with a twist of the imagination too. The purpose of the project is to show off these much-loved establishments that locals and visitors frequent, in an illustrative and unique way.” “The Chapel Place painting is a bit unconventional as a Christmas scene, depending on how you view Christmas of course, with wet Victorian streets and even A Christmas Carol in mind,” she

says. “I wanted the deep-rooted historical charm of Chapel Place to come through, and showcase the lights that are supplied by RTW Together. The lights stand out so beautifully between the buildings and the shop fronts are gorgeous, so it was a treat to paint. The Pantiles painting felt a bit more chocolate box, especially with the pretty twinkling lights on the trees and the sociable element of eating and drinking outside. I just had to add snow for that one, to portray the perfect Christmas scene.” “The free Christmas cards and promotional illustrations will provide free keepsakes and souvenirs for both tourists and locals,” BID Director Sarah-Jane Adams concludes. “Projects like this are all about shining a light on our town for both residents and visitors. We can all too easily forget to appreciate the beauty of where we live amidst the bustle of everyday life!” ■

A GIANT PERFORMANCE: Jack and the Beanstalk is a grower at The Assembly Hall Theatre

A VERY Royal PANTOMIME ee, fi, fo, fum… a giant production is coming to The Assembly Hall Theatre! Starring Cliff Parisi, of Eastenders, Call The Midwife and I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here fame, Little Wolf Entertainment presents Jack & The Beanstalk.

F

question is, can Jack get his head out of the clouds long enough to save the day?

Dame Trott and her family have been selling ice cream at the annual fair for as long as anyone can remember – but when the ginormous giant puts the rent up, the family are forced to sell their beloved cow Pat in exchange for just a handful of beans. The

Tunbridge Wells resident Stewart McCheyne, best known for his role as Cousin Mac on CBBC’s Andy and the Odd Socks, is pleased to be returning to his local theatre this year to play Silly Simon. “Silly Simon is Jack’s little brother,” Stewart tells us. “The pantomime

Featuring a dazzling cast, an epic set design and plenty of rip-roaring panto fun to enthral children and adults alike, this year’s Christmas production is the biggest and best yet.

is set at a fair - it’s going to be great fun, and very, very silly! I actually used to pull pints at the Assembly Hall many moons ago, so I’m thrilled to be on the stage this year. There’s nothing quite like a live panto audience, it’s so magical!” Having toured with Andy and the Odd Socks, Stewart is looking forward to reconnecting with audiences after a tough couple of years for performers. “It’s great to come back to performing live to audiences. Lockdown was really tough,” he says. “Theatre is really important; we’re telling a story and

the audience goes on that journey with you in the moment. Why should people book their tickets for Jack & The Beanstalk? Well, simply put, it’s going to be incredible,” Stewart enthuses. “If nothing else, come and see Cliff - it’s going to be ‘Minty fresh!’ Come and see it, it’s going to be absolutely hysterical and such a lot of fun.” Every panto comes with a good love story, and this one is no different. Recent graduate

pandemic, the entire cast is keen to ensure that they receive a truly magical experience at The Assembly Hall this year. “The cast and the show is really family friendly, we’ve all worked with young audiences before,” Olivia continues. “It’s actually my first time performing in a pantomime, so I’m really excited to see how the kids react! The Assembly Hall Theatre is so grand, it feels a bit like a concert arena, and Tunbridge Wells at Christmas is just stunning, it’s so scenic. It really feels like we’re making up for lost time. Basically, Jack & The Beanstalk is pure panto magic,” she concludes. “Plus, having Cliff onboard is such a joy. We’re in for such a treat with this cast!”

14

Speaking of the beloved British actor, familiar from his roles as loveable Minty in Eastenders and Fred Buckle in Call the Midwife, Cliff Parisi is thrilled to be headlining the show. “I came down to Tunbridge Wells yesterday and had a wander round, it’s very pretty, I’m very impressed,” he tells us. “I can’t wait to look around and torment a few shopkeepers! When it comes to the ice rink, I might get them to tow me along Olivia Hallett plays Jill, but in this version, she’s Jack’s love interest instead of his sister. “Jill is the daughter of the local Mayor,” Olivia tells us. “During the show, I fall in love with Jack, the eligible young bachelor! This is my first panto as I graduated earlier this year, so I’m really excited to be a part of such a brilliant cast.” With many families coming back to the panto tradition for the first time since the

behind on a little sleigh! We’re also going to go down to the children’s hospital ward and say hello to the kids over Christmas as well!” Walter Waltzer marks a departure from Cliff’s usual roles, this time being the villain - “He’s a bit of an old rock and roller, a carnie, and he’s a baddie. He gets up to a bit of mischief, and causes trouble wherever he can. I love being booed! It’s a like a breath of stale air! It’s good

to be doing something different! It makes a nice change, because I’m always the goodie, sweet loveable Fred, sweet loveable Minty, but this character, there’s nothing sweet about him! I’m going to take real pleasure in scaring all the kids and chasing them around the auditorium! And the old age pensioners, everyone’s gonna get it! Come and see the show because this is going to be the best pantomime in the country this year, probably in the world! We’re gonna have a real laugh in Tunbridge Wells, it’s a lovely cast and I’m really looking forward to getting it onto the stage and running around and frightening people.” Last but certainly not least, larger than life Dame Helga Skelter Trott is played by James Peake. “As you can see, my costume is very de-

mure,” he says wryly, showing off his colourful petticoats. “It’s going to be a great show. Everyone gets their moment, there’s lots of comedy, slapstick and clever wordplay, it’ll make you laugh and cry all in one evening. I can’t wait to get on that stage! This panto is bigger and better than anything you’ve seen. It’s a classic story that will knock your socks off, with lots of big musical numbers and dazzling special effects in a wonderful theatre space. Book those tickets!” Catch matinee and evening performances of Jack & The Beanstalk from 10th-31st December, at The Assembly Hall Theatre. Book tickets online at www.assemblyhalltheatre.co.uk ■
