Royal Tunbridge Wells Together Business Improvement District is bringing the first ever Art Week to the town centre from Monday 22 to Monday 29 August.

In this booklet, you’ll find a packed programme with fun sessions of making and learning. From fine art to finger painting, there’s something for every level of interest and ability.

Come along and get creative, discover and support a new town centre business or local artist, and help us paint the town red (and all the other colours!)

We ask that you only book if you are sure of your attendance, and book onto your favourite 1 or 2 events to give as many people as possible the chance to enjoy an arty activity.

PHOTOGRAPHY ON THE PANTILES - FREE MONDAY 22 AUGUST, 10am –1pm THURSDAY 25 AUGUST, 10am – 1pm THE PANTILES (15 spaces per session) Get snap happy with our professional photography masterclass, with local teacher Simon Everett. Look through the lens at one of the town centre’s most papped spots – the Pantiles! Bring your preferred camera or phone, all levels are welcome. (Movement around the Pantiles is required.) (Adults and 16+ accompanied)

MAKE A GLASS COASTER AT GLASS BY CLAUDIA - FREE DAILY DURING ART WEEK, 11am AND 3.30pm, MON 22 - MON 29 GLASS BY CLAUDIA, MONSON ROAD (3 spaces per session)

Want to give glass a go? Have a smashing time and create a coaster for your home under the cosy instruction of glass guru Claudia!

Note: There is no glass cutting involved in this safe session, and no experience in glass work is required. Finished pieces will need to be fired in the kiln for 24 to 36 hours, and collected by the attendee to take home after this time. (Age 12+

DESIGN A DUCK AT MANIC CERAMIX - FREE

MANIC CERAMIX, CAMDEN ROAD (12 children per session, with only one parent/guardian per child . parent can also paint if stated when booking ) Rubber ducks are out and ceramic ducks are in as we go quackers for this swimmingly good ceramics project! Paint and take home a decorative duck, in whatever style floats your boat, yours to keep forever. (Age 4+) Note: Finished ducks will need to be left on site to be fired in the kiln, and will be available to collect from Manic Ceramix after a week. Children must be accompanied by an adult, who may also paint a duck!

Make magic with classic princess characters, as they sprinkle fairy dust to help your talented tots to make a crown or decorate a wand, to take home. Selfie opportunities will make this a fairytale come true! Either pre-book onto a special session, or come along to the Trinity Theatre Summer Fete.

THE AMELIA SCOTT, GROUND FLOOR OUTSIDE CHILDREN’S LIBRARY, MONSON ROAD (10 spaces per session) If you love to see how machines work and want to bring your own designs to life, the play experts at Whirligig Toys will make it happen! We will be making moving toys together – clever little devices that use simple technology to create fun.

This workshop will get you designing and making something that really works, and at the same time, you will understand just what is happening inside. You will also get to play with some of the amazing toys we have collected, and take home a free kit. (Age 8-10 years)

STILL LIFE DRAWING WITH JAN MOFFITT - FREE FRIDAY 26 AUGUST, 1pm CASTLE FINE ART, HIGH STREET (15 spaces available) Feeling fruity? Be inspired as you draw from edible still life in a professional gallery space with experienced class teacher Jan Moffitt.

A pile of cardboard, some very clever tools and connectors and a mind full of imagination – what will you make? Explore 3D creations with confidence and make something fantastic, useful, silly or just amazing! This workshop will be full of ideas – we will be showing the children how to create wonderful structures or even costumes that they can wear. Using the amazing ‘Make Do’ system, we will be transforming ordinary cardboard boxes into whatever they can think of.

WATERCOLOUR PAINTING ON THE PANTILES - FREE THURSDAY 25 AUGUST, 10am, 11am AND 12pm THE PANTILES BANDSTAND (12 spaces per session) A favourite spot for artists over hundreds of years, the historic ambience of The Pantiles is the perfect place to spend a relaxing hour honing your watercolour technique with Arty Farty professionals. We’re providing an exclusive view with seating on the bandstand while you work, with a free hot drink at the Tunbridge Wells Hotel after your hour of tutoring. What makes a diamond so valuable? What is crystology? Uncover the mysteries of all things sparkly with a qualified gemologist at Walsh Bros Jewellers. Use the tools of the profession to look down the microscope and try the diamond checker! A special costumed explorer character will also travel in for the class, ready to learn about these precious items – and take selfies! A Walsh Bros certificate will be provided. (Age 6-10 years, unaccompanied) (Please note, parents cannot stay in the premises for this activity – children will be in a small locked store, carefully supervised by CRB checked shop staff, and promotional staff. Your contact details will be taken upon arrival, and free £5 voucher for nearby Momentum Coffee Shop provided.)

Hear from local fine art photographer Ben Hatwell on his approach to capturing beautiful outdoor scenes around Kent in this interesting insight into landscape and woodland photography. There will be the opportunity to ask questions about Ben’s work and techniques, as well as the chance to view and purchase prints. (Adults, no accompanying minors)

OUTDOOR URBAN SKETCHING AT THE CLOCK TOWER - FREE WEDNESDAY 24 AUGUST, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm CLOCK TOWER, FIVEWAYS (12 spaces per session) It’s time to join a tutor-led class in urban sketching, as we draw the Millenium clock tower and surrounding public spaces. Great for all abilities, and ideal for people watchers!

Clipboards and drawing materials will be provided, this is a standing and moving activity.

FACE PAINTING, GLITTER ART, BALLOON MODELLING AND SELFIES WITH STILT WALKERS! - FREE SATURDAY 27 AUGUST, 11am-3pm CLOCK TOWER, FIVEWAYS JUST COME ALONG, NO BOOKING REQUIRED Kreative kids – meet our fun arty stilt walkers, and enjoy FREE face painting, glitter face art and balloon modelling. Get a selfie with our painter characters and collect a free Royal Tunbridge Wells Together colouring book.

FREE ONLINE CLASSES Want to unleash your creativity in the comfort of your own home? You can still get involved in Art Week virtually by joining our free online classes.

We won’t ask you to put on your cameras or microphones, so you can work along in privacy – there will be opportunities to ask questions via the chat box function. Book to attend as many sessions as you like!

ANIMAL ILLUSTRATION WITH JAN MOFFITT - FREE TUESDAY 23 AUGUST, 7-8pm ONLINE / ANY AGE Make your artwork a roaring success as you sketch on the wild side! You’ll be drawing a dramatic lion and a wise owl, with local artist Jan Moffitt, learning to create form and texture.

Participants will receive a PDF example of the images ahead of time. You’ll need a pencil, such as 2B, 4B or 6B, and your choice of paper.

CREATIVE THERAPY WITH ARTY FARTY - FREE WEDNESDAY 24 AUGUST, 7-8pm ONLINE / ANY AGE Find out how therapeutic creativity can be! We’ll be exploring lots of different fun processes to help you relax and be inspired.

You don’t have to be good at art for this one, just grab whatever pens, pencils, crayons you have... and plenty of paper to join in.

FACE UP TO PORTRAITS WITH ARTY FARTY - FREE THURSDAY 25 AUGUST, 7-8pm ONLINE / ANY AGE Have your pencils at the ready and learn how to draw a portrait from home. We’ll go over some basic techniques before starting a larger drawing, so don’t worry if you’ve never drawn before - we’ll help along with tips and tricks!

Please have with you a printed portrait of someone you’d like to draw.

Tunbridge Wells colouring book!

As part of our creative celebrations, we’ve commissioned special sketches of Royal Tunbridge Wells town centre by local artists for our RTW Together colouring book.

Whether you’re all grown up and colouring for mindfulness, or it’s a treat for tiny fingers, we invite you to pick up a FREE copy around the town centre.

SCRIBBLE YOUR WAY TO SUCCESS WITH OUR COLOURING COMPETITION...

We’ve partnered with our friends at M. Saltmarsh and Rymans, both of Monson Road, to provide the opportunity to watercolour, crayon, pencil or felt tip your way to an inspiring prize of art supplies.

There are three age categories to enter, Under 10, 11-17, and Adults. The two young winners will win a hamper of age appropriate goodies from Rymans, whilst the lucky grown up gets a selection of art supplies from M. Saltmarsh, who will be casting their expert eye over the masterpieces to judge all the submissions, as the oldest art shop in England!

Each prize of arts, craft and stationery products is worth £100, ensuring you or your little ones can keep the creativity going long after Art Week has finished.

CREATIVE THERAPY WITH ARTY FARTY WE HAVE NO DESIGNS ON CAPTURING YOUR INFO!

The details you give us, such as attendee names and contact email address will not be used for any other purpose than that of booking you onto your chosen sessions, and sending you information relating to such in the event of important updates or changes. A photographer and videographer may be present at some sessions – you are not under any obligation to be photographed, and we will always check with you first. We won’t photograph or film children without express written guardian consent.

If you or your little ones have tested positive for Covid or are displaying symptoms, please help us minimise the risk for other attendees by letting us know you can’t come along to booked sessions. Mask wearing is not mandatory, but you are very welcome to wear one if you feel more comfortable doing so.

CANCELLATIONS We’re pleased to be offering these events for you to enjoy for free – we know things happen, so we do ask that if you have to cancel your place you give us as much notice as you can so that someone else may enjoy the slot, and we get the best value from our bookings, as we are funding each place that is allocated.
