FROM COURTS TO COMMUNITY: THE IMPACT OF SPORTS IN ROSEVILLE
The California Chamber of Commerce is hosting their annual Capitol Summit from May 8-9 in Sacramento, and the UCAN (United Chamber Advocacy Network) coalition of chambers will be joining together to participate. The CalChamber will share valuable information on the state of California legislation and the top policy priorities for businesses. The UCAN chambers, along with our lobbyists from Smith Policy Group, will be visiting our state legislators to speak on the affect California policy has had on our members. Participating in direct discussions with state legislators allows us, on behalf of local businesses, to advocate for policies that align with the needs and interests of our membership, creating a more informed and responsive legislative landscape allowing for economic growth and prosperity.
In addition to participating in policy discussions on a state level, I recently traveled to our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., to speak with and hear from federal legislators. While there, I had the opportunity to learn more about workforce development programs that would have a significant impact on local businesses. It is vital to work with the business community and legislators to create a strong and educated workforce. I also met with Congressman Kevin Kiley, who sits on the House Committee on Education and Workforce, to get updates on what Congress is doing to address workforce development. As we engage with legislators at both state and federal levels, it's evident that our collaboration is vital for shaping policies that drive economic growth and empower our workforce.
Sincerely,
Rana Ghadban CEO, Roseville Area Chamber of CommerceHomelessness continues to be a major issue and point of focus for Placer County. Local elected officials, issue experts, law enforcement and other staff have come together throughout the last three years to address the issue in our area. As we assess the need for an emergency shelter of some type, one other issue we need to spend time addressing is homeless families.
In our ongoing conversations, we have used the “Point in Time” Count as our primary measure of the number of homeless in our community. However, this measure does not tell the whole story. Understanding the McKinney-Vento definition of homelessness is crucial. This definition encompasses not only individuals lacking a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, but also families who may be staying in shelters, cars, motels, or doubling up with others due to housing loss or economic hardship.
While the efforts of our law enforcement and human services division are vital, addressing homelessness requires a comprehensive approach involving various stakeholders, including the business community.
KidsFirst, St. Vincent de Paul, and AMI Housing are at the forefront, providing essential services and support to homeless families and individuals in Placer County.
KidsFirst prevents child abuse through education, counseling, and community resources. St. Vincent de Paul supplies groceries, diapers, and meals to families in Roseville and Rocklin. AMI Housing aids with rental assistance, utilities, and more for rapid rehousing and homeless prevention.
These three non-profits are a few of the many worthy organizations supporting our homeless families and as members of the business community, I encourage you to take the opportunity to support them. Through financial contributions, volunteer work, and partnerships, we can make a significant impact on the lives of homeless families and individuals. Together, we can create a more resilient and compassionate community.

-Bonnie Gore, Placer County SupervisorOur first 2024 Business Bootcamp was facilitated by Patrick DuBois, owner of Sales Growth Today. His company offers sales consulting and fractional sales management services for growth-ready individuals and companies.
30 Seconds of Success was created to help all Chamber of Commerce members give effective and meaningful commercials during the breakfast meetings. As the microphone gets passed around many get nervous and when it’s time to stand and speak you can’t find the right words. Or you get jumbled, you don’t enunciate, and often go over the time limit. Admittedly, 30 seconds goes very fast, and you want to tell EVERYTHING you do which leads to too much information that overloads our audience, and then they check out. NOT the outcome we want!
When we get nervous our vocal cords constrict and raise our pitch. This makes the speaker sound insecure and shaky. To get the voice in the right pitch we practiced saying “Uh-Huh.” The sound of the “huh” is the pitch to focus on for your optimum presenting voice. Saying “uh-huh” just before you present helps relax vocal cords and steadies your nerves.
TIP #2
Patrick then had us write 1-2 sentences about the solutions our services or products address that are unique.
TIP #3
He also recommended using a pause between your company name and what you offer. Other members said their hot sheet number after their name AND at the end, that was a great tip.
Then each of us had the chance to practice live and got direct feedback from Patrick. Other members volunteered with extra advice, which helped give the event a sense of camaraderie and support. The meeting ended with Patrick advising us that less is more, to practice, practice, practice so we don’t go over the 30 seconds. Then we deliver our message succinctly and with confidence.

With the Primary Election votes officially certified, we are now turning our sights to the November General Election. Assemblyman Joe Patterson received over 50% of the vote in State Assembly District 5 and will continue onto the general election. In the Placer County Board of Supervisor races, Suzanne Jones, receiving over half of the vote in District 4, will keep her seat on the Board. Mike Murry and Anthony DeMattei were the top vote getters in District 3, but since neither received a majority of the vote, they will face off in the general election. As for District 5, Cindy Gustafson and Wayne Nader will continue to the general election as no candidate received a majority of votes.
The Chamber will also be keeping an eye on the upcoming Roseville City Council elections. Incumbents Tracy Mendonsa and Bruce Houdesheldt will both be up for reelection for their respective seats in District 1 and 3. There is also an open seat in District 5, with no eligible incumbent able to run, allowing for an exciting race with new candidates.
Our advocacy team at the Chamber and the United Chamber Advocacy Network (UCAN) coalition is also focused on a ballot measure to fix the Private Attorney Generals Act (PAGA). Enacted in 2004 to address labor disputes, PAGA has faced criticism for causing delays and providing insufficient restitution for workers over the past two decades. In response, advocates have qualified an initiative for the November 2024 ballot, while actively engaging with elected officials and stakeholders to explore legislative solutions that better serve the interests of California's small businesses and workers.
Be on the lookout for more election information and actions that you can take to ensure that Roseville and its elected officials stay business friendly.
The original Old Town Pizza (OTP) opened in Auburn, CA, on July 20, 1999, and was purchased by the Browning Family in November 2002. It aimed to provide a full-service dining experience themed to the town's history. The Brownings expanded, opening a second location in Lincoln, CA, in July 2004. In 2015, OTP launched its Roseville, CA, location, focusing on a railroad theme and an expanded beer and wine selection. With growing success, OTP purchased property and relocated its Lincoln location in 2019, enabling the creation of Lincoln's first rooftop dining and opening Slice Beer Company. In 2021, OTP purchased property and moved from the original Auburn location to its largest restaurant yet, with a large rooftop patio. OTP is celebrating its 25th Anniversary throughout 2024! Plans include monthly specials, limited-time appetizers, fun merchandise, and giveaways on the 20th of each month! Celebrate with OTP soon and experience that "Good as Gold" feeling!

Sports tourism is bustling in Placer Valley and the year is just getting started! 2024 started off strong as Placer Valley Tourism hosted the US Quadball National Qualifier at Maidu Regional Park in Roseville. Drawing teams from as far away as New Jersey and Wisconsin, this two-day tournament attracted some of the best clubs in the nation. Quadball, formerly known as Quidditch intertwines various sports where athletes must carry a broom (plastic pipe) between their legs, much like in the Harry Potter novels.
In March, the Association of Pickleball Players made its triumphant return to Placer Valley, marking the third consecutive year with a major tournament. The APP Sacramento Open, held at the Johnson Ranch Pickleball Complex at the Spare Time Sports Clubs in Roseville, saw a staggering turnout of over 1,500 players, spanning both professional and amateur ranks.
@the Grounds, home to the Roebbelen Center, stands as a premier destination for indoor sports, offering an unparalleled venue for a variety of events. From volleyball and basketball tournaments to gymnastics meets and cheer competitions, the venue has already hosted an impressive array of events within the first three months of the year, promising an exciting calendar ahead!
These events serve as just a glimpse into why Placer Valley reigns as California's Sports Destination!

On March 21st, we held our first ever Roseville Event Planning Showcase, put on by our Event Planning Roundtable. At the event, attendees explored over 30 vendors at this one stop shop for everything to make their next event a success by connecting with top-notch caterers, venues, DJs, photographers and more! Attendees also enjoyed networking with local experts, raffle prizes, swag bags, and food and drink samples.
A huge shoutout to our amazing committee for putting in extra time to make this event a success. Thank you also to our Presenting Sponsor, LUSH Balloons for elevating the space with their incredible balloon artisty. Also a special shout-out to our generous host, @the Grounds! @the Grounds offers spaces in a multitude of sizes for whatever best fits your event’s size and their incredible staff makes any event a breeze!
Our Joint Chamber Mixer on April 10th, in collaboration with the Auburn, Lincoln, and Rocklin Chambers, was a resounding success, bringing together members from all four chambers for an evening of networking, collaboration, and community building.
A special thank you our host, @the Grounds. Their spacious and welcoming venue, provided an ideal setting for professionals from various industries to connect, exchange ideas, and forge valuable relationships between members of the 4 different chambers.
One of the highlights of the evening was the opportunity to sample delicious food offerings from each of the participating chambers. Attendees were treated to a diverse array of culinary delights, including Roseville's own Flame and Fire Brazilian Steakhouse.
Overall, the joint mixer was a wonderful opportunity for members of the Roseville, Auburn, Lincoln, and Rocklin Chambers to come together, strengthen existing connections, and forge new ones. As we look to the future, we are excited about the possibilities that arise when we work together and support one another, and we eagerly anticipate future collaborations and events that bring our communities closer together.

My favorite part of being an ambassador is the positive interactions I am able to have with every member of the chamber, whether they are a chamber member, staff, or fellow ambassador. When I speak with people, I always get a sense that they are excited to be a part of such a dedicated chamber. This energy is contagious, and makes every interaction I have enjoyable!
As an ambassador, I have been able to connect with so many individuals, spanning a variety of backgrounds and industries. I’ve had the opportunity to lend assistance in various different ways, and greatly appreciate the relationships that have stemmed because of it. In regards to my business, these relationships have been beneficial when needing to connect with someone, whether for a quick question or assistance!
As a chamber member, the chamber has provided us with an opportunity become more localized with Roseville and the surrounding area. While we are a national firm, many of us do live here local and love having the opportunity to be engaged directly with our local community.
-Marcel Plomteaux, CAPTRUST2024 has been off to a great start! We've enjoyed engaging coffee meetups, mixers, and insightful offsite visits. Recently, we convened at the impressive Nugget on Blue Oaks in West Roseville, hearing from store Director Angel Nolasco and best bagger competitor, Coby E. Our trip to the Placer County Elections Office during the elections was equally enlightening to see the whole ballot counting process in action.
On May 2nd, we held our annual The Bash, this year’s event featured 20 food and beverage vendors serving up delicious samples all night long!
Thank you so much to our events sponsors, especially our VIP Sponsor: The California Recovery Center, for making this year’s Bash a success.
Hope to see you all at our next Coffee Chat on June 14th! RSVP on the Chamber website.
- Vincent Gonzales, 2024 Ignite Chair
The 2024 APP Sacramento Open was held at the Johnson Ranch Pickleball Complex in Roseville March 6-10. Over 1,500 players representing six countries including Peru, Brazil, Japan, Canada, Puerto Rico, and thirty nine US States participated in the event. The competition awarded $100,000 in total prize money for the professional divisions and was televised on ESPN. This tournament was one of five Association of Pickleball Professionals (APP) Golden Ticket Events where amateur division winners earn a “Golden Ticket” to participate in the USA Pickleball National Championships.
This was one of the largest participant events ever held at a Spare Time club and was a joint effort between Spare Time, APP, and two hundred incredible volunteers. This Sacramento tournament broke the record for the largest APP Tour stop to date. The growth of the sport was apparent in numbers but the love for the sport created the buzz of excitement in the air all week long as spectators filled the stands to take in the pro matches.
Sacramento area Pickleballers represented a sizable contingent of competitors playing in the tournament and many of them walked away with medals and Golden Tickets. It was the first time ever to have a Golden Ticket event in Northern California and we are so thankful to have been afforded this opportunity to our region.
-Samantha Martinez, Pickleball Director - Spare Time Sports ClubDid you know we have a grocery celebrity in our city? Earlier this month Coby E. from the Roseville Nugget Market on Blue Oaks Blvd. represented both the family-owned company and the state of California at the National Grocers Association (NGA) Best Bagger Championship in Las Vegas. He earned his place there by winning Nugget Market’s internal Bag-Off back in September and the previous year, making this his second trip to Las Vegas to compete nationally!
How does one win the coveted title of best bagger? At both the Nugget Market competition and the national championship, each competitor bags the same selection of groceries and is scored in categories including speed, weight distribution, bagging technique and style/attitude/performance. Their final score is calculated based on how well they performed in each category. (Is the bag falling over? Is any glass touching?) To prepare for the big event, Coby trained with two-time Nugget Market Bag-Off winner, Alexa S., who works at their West Sacramento store and went on to win the national championship in 2022.
On Coby’s first trip to Vegas back in 2023, he performed admirably at the NGA Best Bagger Championship, but didn’t make the leaderboard against 13 of the most skilled baggers from across the country. At the 2024 championship, there was even more on the table with 18 contestants from just as many states facing off to see who would earn the ultimate b(r)agging rights. While the competition was fierce, Coby brought his A-game and came in strong claiming 3rd best bagger in the nation!
So, if you want your groceries bagged by a true pro, drop by Nugget Market in Roseville on Blue Oaks to meet Coby in person—if you’re lucky, he may even sign your grocery bag for you.
-Rebecca Reichardt, Director of Marketing - Nugget Market
