It’s hard to believe that I am already at the point of writing my last President’s Message to all of you. What an amazing year it has been! When 2021 started, the world was still in the throws of the Covid-19 pandemic, and while it is still with us, there clearly seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. Gradually over this year we were able to resume in-person events including the monthly breakfasts and luncheons, our ever-popular Economic and Government Affairs meetings, the Leadership Roseville program, and a host of other activities that had to be relegated to Zoom throughout 2020. To top it off, hundreds of our members and guests celebrated the end of summer by enjoying wonderful food, beverages and music at our premier Splash event on September 11th. For me, however, the most important goal of 2021 was to honor Wendy Gerig’s 28-years of service to the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce by finding an outstanding individual to take over the position of CEO as Wendy retires. An incredible amount of time and effort was devoted to this project by an amazing Search Committee, the Board of Directors, Chamber staff and Wendy herself, and I am pleased to report that we accomplished our mission. By now, most of you probably know that Rana Ghadban has been hired as the new CEO, and by
the time you read this she will already be on the job, working together with Wendy and staff during a six-week transition period. Rana’s experience at the helm of three chambers of commerce in Southern California, her strong leadership skills, and her infectious personality are, I believe, a perfect fit for our Chamber. Even before she officially started her position, Rana made several trips to Roseville to participate in various Chamber activities, learn more about the area, and met several of its leaders. Rana even signed up for Leadership Roseville as one of its students! I hope you will all join me in giving Rana a warm welcome to the Roseville area and our Chamber! I also want to take this opportunity to brag a little. In my September message, I told you about the Chamber’s plan to hold a membership campaign called Chamberfest from October 5th-7th, with the goal of beating the YubaSutter Chamber of Commerce’s record-setting achievement of gaining 226 members and raising $126,000 in the span of three days. Well, I’m pleased to report that through the tireless efforts of 113 volunteers and the entire Chamber staff, led by Jimmy Cusano of Your Chamber Connection, we BEAT YUBASUTTER and set a NEW WEST COAST RECORD by recruiting 228 new members and raising a whopping $176,350 for the Chamber! What a great way
to honor Wendy Gerig’s legacy and leave the Chamber in excellent financial shape for Rana Ghadban as she takes the reins! I would particularly like to thank the seven Chairpersons of Chamberfest: Laura Matteoli, Jeff Richardson, Supervisor Bonnie Gore, Shannon Zajec, Dr. John Jackson, Joe Flores and Dion Louthan. Without their passion and commitment to the Chamber, achieving this monumental goal would simply not have been possible. In closing, I wish to thank each and every one of you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your President this year. It has been an amazing experience, and one that I will always treasure. I would also like to thank my Board of Directors for their dedication and service during this past year, and to extend my very best wishes to your incoming President, Darlene Cullivan, for a successful 2022. Darlene is an amazing leader and a wonderful person, and I have no doubt that the Chamber will continue to thrive under her leadership next year. Lastly, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to our fearless leader, Wendy Gerig, for 28 years of dedicated service to our Chamber, and to wish her a long and happy retirement. You will be greatly missed, and never forgotten!

While Placer County continues to attract new residents because of economic opportunities and quality of life, one sector of our economy that is often overlooked is our agriculture. This last year has been difficult for many due to the pandemic but one positive that emerged is renewed support for our local producers and food supply. Many residents experienced difficulties obtaining fresh produce and other products and they responded by connecting with local producers. They rediscovered our farmers markets and many of those products are grown right here in Placer County. You can find weekly farmers markets throughout Placer County including Tuesdays at the Roseville Fountains and Sundays in Granite Bay at the Quarry Ponds Town Center. Visit PlacerGrown.org to find out more. Our county boasts a diverse set of agriculture products including tree fruit, livestock, grapes, rice and timber. In 2020, Placer County reached a gross value of more than
$90 million of agricultural crops and products, a 4% increase above 2019. What newer residents may not know is that our rolling hills are filled with mandarin orange orchards. I was able to sit down with Tom Aguilar, whose family has owned and operated Mandarin Hill Orchards in Penryn since 1947, who told me that our region is perfect for growing because of the rich soils, pure water and the climate for cultivation. The best, and my favorite, way to get them is to visit one of the many orchards, like Tom’s, only 15 minutes from Roseville up Interstate 80. If you can’t stop by an orchard, attend the annual Mountain Mandarin Festival November 19-21 where you can purchase delicious, foothillsgrown Mandarin oranges along with a variety of local products. Another industry that has grown in Placer County is wineries. Our local wineries offer a more intimate tasting room experience than other regions of California. You can taste excellent wines poured for you by the winemakers themselves as most
Placer wineries are small acreage, family-owned and operated. The Placer Wine Trail not only offers excellent wine, but breath-taking views of the foothills, vineyards and Sacramento valley. I appreciate the work of Placer GROWN and our visitor’s bureau, Visit Placer, to promote these offerings to our residents and visitors. I encourage you to support our local producers by buying Placer-grown products for your family and visiting the orchards, wineries, farms, and festivals.
