By now most of you have undoubtedly learned that Wendy Gerig, the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce’s beloved CEO of nearly 28 years, has decided to retire at the end of 2021. It goes without saying that Wendy’s contributions, too enumerable to count, have shaped the Chamber into what it is today, and we all owe Wendy a debt of gratitude for her tireless work to advance the goals of the organization, its members, and the entire South Placer Business community. Although we are all sad to see Wendy step away from her long-standing leadership role with the Chamber, I and my fellow Board of Directors knew that this day would come eventually and that we had to plan accordingly. As a result, in early 2020 the Board adopted a formal CEO Succession Plan. This plan provides a detailed blueprint for current and future Board members to follow whenever the Chamber’s CEO needs to be replaced for whatever reason. Immediately
after Wendy announced her retirement, the Succession Plan was activated in order to recruit and hire a highly qualified successor CEO by November 1, 2021. I thought it would be appropriate to use this month’s President’s Message as an opportunity to let you all know about this process. In May of this year, a CEO Search Committee was formed, which is comprised of several current and former Board members as well as other civil and business leaders in the Roseville area. The Search Committee’s first task was to solicit proposals from a number of executive search firms from both within and outside of California to assist with the recruitment and hiring process. After reviewing multiple proposals and interviewing two finalists, the decision was made to retain Leap Solutions Group, Inc., which is based in Santa Rosa, California, to head up the search. Leap Solutions has a strong track record of successfully recruiting outstanding CEOs for Chambers of Commerce and
other non-profit organizations throughout California, and we are very excited to be working with them on this important endeavor. In the coming months, the Search Committee will be working intensively with Leap Solutions on completing the recruitment process for the Chamber’s new CEO, and I would like to thank each and every member of the Committee for their considerable time and dedication to this project. I am extremely confident that when our search is completed, we will have found a new CEO that will not only be able to maintain the goals that were accomplished by Wendy Gerig during her tenure, including our coveted 5-Star accreditation by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, but who will also bring exciting new energy and ideas of his or her own that will further enhance the benefits of membership and solidify the Roseville area’s reputation as the best place in California to live, work and do business.

The newest Supervisor shares her history, the ideas that formed the foundation of her passion for public service and her perspective on leadership. I know I’m not a stranger to many of you, so please forgive me if I repeat myself for the benefit of those who are just getting to know me. I am the third of four siblings, and when I was born my dad was an officer in the Air Force. He had been a night fighter pilot in Europe during WW II flying P-61 Black Widows. After the war, the Air Force moved my dad around quite a bit. Eventually he was stationed at Mather Air Force Base, and my parents bought a home in Citrus Heights. A few years later when it was time to rotate out, my dad decided to retire from the Air Force because he had fallen in love with Northern California and did not want to leave. Citrus Heights was just a rural corner of Sacramento County neighboring Roseville then - there was not much there in those days. And that is where I grew up. My mom was a stay-at-home mom, though she didn’t always “stay at home”. She moved all around the world with my dad, often with small children in tow. On my father’s assignment to Okinawa my mother boarded a troop ship with my father, in San Francisco for a trans-pacific voyage with three small children. Two years later, they boarded a ship
for the return voyage, this time with four small children. My parents sacrificed a lot so they could afford to send my siblings and I to private schools, even though the public schools were quite good in those days. My sister and I graduated from Mercy High School and my two brothers graduated from Jesuit High School. To this day all four of us look back on the education we received and feel that it was the most important thing our parents did for us. So that brings me to the day after my 18th birthday. That’s the day I registered to vote, and I did so out of a sense of civic duty and responsibility. Duty and responsibility were things that I had learned about all through my upbringing, not just through words, but by watching them in action. There were things that I witnessed throughout my whole life, but that I would not fully come to understand until I was older. Things such as my father enlisting in the Army Air Corps a few days after Pearl Harbor and spending over 20 years serving his country. Things I learned watching my mother follow him around the world raising a family and often transporting several small children to various far-flung outposts. Why did these people who were so important to me do these things that seemed on the surface to be
counter to their own self-interest? They did those things because they were serving something larger than themselves. And I was taught an ethic that said if there’s work to be done get in there and do it. Do not wait for someone else to step up. Do not hold back because the task is difficult, that the most worthwhile and important tasks are the hardest. And perhaps most important of all, do the right thing regardless of what’s in it for you. My life has been one of participation and support for this part of northern California I call home. Even when I was half a world away my family and my roots were always here, and they always will be. I will always be an active participant in the preservation and improvement of my family, my community, my state – my home. I am not just an elected official. I am not just an attorney. I am not just a businessperson. I am not just a mediator. I am all those things, and I will use the multi-dimensional skill and experience that is necessary to build collaborative relationships, form coalitions and be a successful and effective representative. Finally – and most importantly - I have the passion of my convictions. And I will do the right thing – regardless of what’s in it for me.
