What a difference a year makes! Last year, my Easter celebration consisted of my wife and children isolated at home trying to consume a ham that was meant to serve at least fifteen people. The leftovers were nice, but I greatly missed our annual get together with extended family from all over Northern California, planning the Easter egg hunt for the little ones, and swapping stories about summer vacation plans. This year, with the oldest generation and essential workers in my family fully vaccinated, and the rest of us now (or shortly becoming) eligible for the shot, we were able to once again include parents, siblings and grandchildren in our Easter festivities. I even got to hug my mom and dad (who are in their 80’s) for the first time in a year! Seeing our lives slowly returning to normal also makes me excited

for the future of the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce. Board meetings are now “Zoom optional” rather than “Zoom mandatory” and April’s Chamber luncheon and breakfast were both held in-person for the first time this year. Hopefully before too long we will see a complete return to regular Chamber staffing and operations, and signature events like SPLASH will be back up and running. For those of you who have maintained your Chamber memberships during the pandemic, either on your own or with help from the Chamber’s innovative “Pay It Forward” Program, I have just one thing to say: “Thank you!” Your continued support of the Roseville Area Chamber during this incredibly challenging time speaks volumes about the quality and character of the South Placer business

community and affirms the value of membership in our Chamber. Rest assured that our CEO, Wendy Gerig, and your Board of Directors will continue to work tirelessly to provide and expand networking and educational opportunities to all of our members as 2021 continues. Lastly, I would like to ask that each of you consider reaching out to a fellow business owner in our region and encouraging them to also join the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce. It goes without saying that there is strength in numbers. Adding additional members to the Chamber’s roster as Covid restrictions continue to lessen will help ensure that the Chamber has sufficient resources to meet staffing requirements and accomplish the priorities and goals established by its Board of Directors.

CITY UPDATE Summer of 2021 Update Krista Bernasconi Mayor of Roseville

Chamber Staff Chief Executive Officer Wendy Gerig

Office Administrator Carole Dittmer Growing. Adapting. Planning. In a nutshell, that’s how I would describe us as a city in 2021. I’m often asked questions related to what the City is working on, what our priorities are as a Council and what it’s like to serve as Mayor. In no particular order, below are the top questions I hear that are on the minds of our residents. HOW CAN WE SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES? The City’s Economic Development Team is working with the County and Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce to help shore up further revenue losses. The City provided $1M in zerointerest loans to local businesses and continuously provided information of other state and federal financial assistance programs. Roseville Electric and Roseville Utilities are working with residents and businesses on relief programs and past-due bill payment options. And we anticipate using funding from the American Rescue Plan to support programs such as Adventure Club which helps parents with childcare needs. From a resident perspective, we can be mindful about shopping local, referring friends and family to locally owned businesses through social media and word of mouth. It’s also really easy to publish a positive review for a business that leaves a lasting impact.

WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT DEVELOPMENT TAKING PLACE THROUGHOUT THE CITY? Development in both the commercial and residential areas is booming! Sierra Vista, Fiddyment Ranch and Creekview developments are creating a singlefamily home permit surge. From 2019 to 2022, the City is expecting about 4,500 housing units to come on board. The Blue Oaks Shopping Plaza, The Plaza at Blue Oaks and Campus Oaks Town Center are all in process of being developed with restaurants, specialty services and other retail options. HOUSING PRICES ARE SKYROCKETING RIGHT NOW. HOW IS ROSEVILLE KEEPING UP? The City leads the way when it comes to offering affordable, low-income and very low-income housing options. We work with our developers to ensure 10% of units produced meet the affordability criteria. This provides much needed affordable housing and spreads those units geographically so they are not isolated to one part of the city. We also operate a Housing Authority that offers many types of assistance from housing vouchers for veterans to help for low-income residents. We are also participating in RentHelpPlacer to provide emergency rental and utility bill assistance.

WHAT ARE THE PRIORITIES OF THE CITY COUNCIL? We place an emphasis on being fiscally responsible, supporting community engagement, advocacy and inclusivity, maintaining a safe and healthy community, providing exceptional city services, enhancing our economic vitality, and investing in well-planned infrastructure and growth. Despite the plethora of unforeseen challenges, our City staff and residents should absolutely be commended for stepping up to ensure Roseville continues to set a high bar. Our sales tax revenues are healthy and surpassing projections, which helps to keep our City amenities healthy. Yes, we are growing but Roseville still remains a city with traditions and charm. And there’s no better Roseville tradition than the Fourth of July parade, which I hope to see you all at this year on Vernon Street! I’m honored to serve as mayor, and if you ever have a question for anyone on City Council, please reach out to us at citycouncil@roseville.ca.us.
