As we embark on a new year and begin to see some light at the end of the Covid pandemic tunnel, I often reflect on how lucky we are to live and do business in the Roseville area. There are many reasons why Roseville was the only city in California to make Money Magazine’s 2020 list of best places to live, as well as named one of the top ten places to retire in the U.S. In my humble opinion, one of those reasons is our favorable business climate, particularly in comparison to some other areas of our state. One of my goals as Chamber President this year is to develop a program to inform the community at large about the importance of being “businessfriendly” and the role that our Chamber plays in promoting such an environment. I personally believe that we are at a tipping point in Roseville.
The tremendous appeal of our community, coupled with the ability for many to work from just about anywhere, has attracted many new residents to our area, some of whom do not seem to share the pro-business attitude and agenda that has helped shape our region into what it is today: well-planned, safe, with a strong tax base, high level of services and quality public schools. To address this, the Chamber has embarked on a new campaign to educate residents about the importance of local business. We will also be working to leverage the Chamber’s Political Action Committee and Leadership Roseville Program to better inform residents about the function of the Chamber and to groom future leaders, not only in business but also in local politics.
Another big focus of the Chamber Board this year will be on retaining the Chamber’s current members and recruiting new ones from our outstanding business community. In my view, the best way to do that is by continuing to offer relevant programs that help members maintain and, ideally, grow their businesses even in the midst of this pandemic. While we cannot guarantee that all of the Chamber’s popular, inperson events will resume this year, Wendy Gerig and her team have done an outstanding job of adapting the Chamber’s programming to the virtual environment we’ll be using for the foreseeable future, and all of us on the Board are committed to working to further enhance those efforts. Of course, just how many goals can be accomplished this year will depend in large part on whether, and how quickly, things return to “normal.” Another driver of our success, however, is you the members, and your level of involvement in the Chamber. In fact, some of the best ideas for new programs and events come directly from our members, and I would welcome the opportunity to discuss any that you may have. Communications Specialist When I originally chose Roseville as my home, Claudia Gamar was Mayor, the population was about to hit 70,000 and the Galleria was close to breaking ground. Claudia is one of many people, men and women, who had the vision of what our community could become. Today, Roseville tops 140,000 residents and once again has a female Mayor with a great vision for our future. Krista Bernasconi, along with Mayor Alyssa Silhi of Lincoln and Mayor Jill Gayaldo of Rocklin, understand the legacy of those who proceeded them and are set to make a significant impact in their cites as our region continues to grow. In addition to the three Mayors, Placer County for the first time has three women serving on the Board of Supervisors. Supervisors Jones and Gustafson (District 4 and District 5, respectively) have been embraced as new voices for our residents and have optimism as we tackle challenges before us. One of the most important things we can continue to do as a community right now is support our local
businesses. Our local business owners have done so much to navigate the challenges of the state mandated shutdowns. They have innovated and invested significant capital as they jumped through hoop after hoop to serve the public and keep their doors open. As we move into what we hope to be the final stages of the pandemic, our support of them is vital. To provide some semblance of stability and to ensure our community retained as many locally owned businesses as possible, our Board of Supervisors put together the “Placer Shares” program. The program provided $16 million in direct relief grants to local small businesses and non-profits in addition to helping relieve some of the permitting fees that restaurants and bars pay annually. Next, we promoted “Shop Placer – Show Love for Local.” This ongoing effort spotlights businesses who provide unique services and products and supports owners and workers who live in our county.
I appreciate the partnership of our local Chambers of Commerce for helping our small businesses community weather this challenging season. While we cannot estimate when we will be in the clear from the COVID-19 pandemic, the optimism and efforts of our community have proven that we can persevere together through almost anything. Please continue to show kindness and give grace to your neighbors and support our local businesses. As we move into 2021, our local leaders are prepared to accomplish great things to lead our community into this new era with significant challenges. Together we can make our South Placer region flourish and I look forward to working with you to accomplish it.

Reopen Energy Smart This year has been like no other; the challenges have been multifaceted to say the least. As your community-owned utility, we are here to help. In addition to payment plans for businesses struggling to pay their electric bill, we have energy-efficiency rebates up to 200% above normal levels. Reopen Energy Smart, which first launched in August 2020, focused on enhanced rebates for smart thermostats, HVAC tune-ups, LED lighting, and food service equipment. The second phase of this program launched in mid-November and includes a no-cost audit and direct install program to keep monthly electric costs down for our small to medium business customers. In the year ahead, we plan to launch a third phase to support the business community. While the long-term impacts of this pandemic remain uncertain, Roseville Electric is focused on being a partner for businesses and residents alike.
