Kristen Holihan SAFE Credit Union Community Banking Addressing Congress on December 7, 1911, President William Howard Taft expressed the need for a “central organization throughout the country that [would be] able to keep American interests in closer touch with different phases of commercial affairs.” State and local chambers make it their interest to be a “voice of business”, and to represent those living within their constituency as a central, local source of business services, advocacy, and valuable information. However, it’s difficult to be a voice of business in our expanding economic and political spheres – in the state of California alone, Roseville is just one city. For this reason, your Board of Directors wanted to give our community a bigger voice – a voice for your businesses, your city – so that our interests are fully represented at the state level and beyond. We are proud to introduce you to a newly formed network, one designed with you in mind – the United Chamber Advocacy Network, UCAN. Your Roseville Area Chamber, along with El Dorado County, the El Dorado County Chamber Consortium, Shingle Springs, Folsom, Rancho Cordova, and Elk Grove chambers of commerce provided funds to form UCAN. By combining our resources to form this new network, our communities will truly have representation at the State Capitol through the work of our very own lobbyist. Our goal is, and has always been, to be the voice of our business members, families, and everyone who resides in our beautiful community. UCAN will work collaboratively with the California Chamber of Commerce, as well as other statewide business organizations, on issues that represent our members’ priorities. The UCAN chambers have surveyed their combined memberships to develop a shared state-level policy agenda, which, in a combined forum in February, they will present to the state legislators who represent each of the local communities – Assemblymembers Kevin Kiley, Jim Cooper, Ken Cooley, and Frank Bigelow, as well as State Senators Ted Gaines, Richard Pan, Jim Nielsen, and Tom Berryhill. It is imperative that our elected officials hear from local chambers and the business community to understand how legislation is going to directly impact them. Small business owners rarely have time to make calls, write letters, or schedule meetings with elected officials. Through your membership with the Roseville Area Chamber, UCAN will give you that voice and give the elected officials an opportunity to hear a collective voice from our local business community that represents our needs, our interests, and our city. We are thrilled to unveil this powerful new initiative and look forward to what this means for our community’s future – advocacy, representation, and growth.

The Chamber recognizes the importance of communication, and we strive to ensure the information we provide to you is timely, relevant, and helpful to each of our members. Last year we partnered with one of our members, Prosio Communications, a Roseville based public relations and marketing firm to help us with our overall communication efforts. Lori Prosio, a recently installed board member, offered us the opportunity to work with her firm on a pro-bono basis to develop a marketing campaign focused on communicating the benefits of a Chamber membership to potential new members, and to remind current members – like you – why your membership is valuable to your business success. We’ve improved our social media content and increased engagement, enhanced awareness of our brand, identified areas of interest among our members for added value and services, and increased membership interest among new area businesses – with recent leads increasing by more than 10 times our monthly average.

As the only five-star accredited chamber in the region, our members benefit greatly by enjoying increased visibility in the community through multiple events such as monthly Chamber happy hours, breakfasts, luncheons and committee meetings. We also help enhance your business skills training through our monthly Seminars for Success, on topics ranging from marketing, to business law, to management techniques, and we provide leadership training through our Leadership Roseville program every year, too. Communication to our members is important to us, but we also want to make sure we provide opportunities for you to communicate with us. We will soon be soliciting input from you to help us continue to improve our communication efforts and identify more ways to help improve your experience with the Chamber. Please keep an eye out for the survey and respond within the timeframe requested. COUNTY UPDATES
Sunset Industrial Area Taking Shape Jack Duran District 1 Supervisor Back in 2014 the Board of Supervisors directed county staff to begin work on a new land use plan for the Sunset Industrial Area with the objective of promoting economic development and job growth in Placer County. As staff undertook the process of developing the new Sunset Area Plan it became clear that the advancement of the planning process for the Placer Ranch Specific Plan – a development plan for a 2,000+ acre property located entirely within the Sunset Area Plan – would be key to the success of the Sunset Area Plan. In an effort to maintain the momentum for both plans, staff was directed in 2016 to process them concurrently. The Sunset Area Plan and the Placer Ranch Specific Plan projects are two of the largest in Placer County, and both are key elements in the growth and economic development we would like to see in Placer County and the surrounding areas. The Sunset Area Plan is comprised of 8,497 acres in an unincorporated area of western Placer County, and the Placer Ranch Specific Plan area’s 2,213 acres are located within the Sunset Area Plan. The Sunset Area Plan will lay the groundwork for how the area is developed in the future by identifying which uses are permitted and where different industries are best suited within the plan area. Having a plan such as the Sunset Area Plan in place streamlines the planning process for businesses looking to locate in Placer County and benefits our community by increasing our ability to attract large-scale national industry. Similarly, the Placer Ranch Specific Plan will establish allowable land uses that complement development in the Sunset Area including nearby housing, retail and other amenities that will make the area a desirable place to live and work. One of the most exciting components of the Placer Ranch Specific Plan is the inclusion of a 300acre satellite campus of California State University Sacramento. It is anticipated that the campus could support up to 25,000 students, 5,000 faculty and staff, and could serve an additional 5,000 students at a proposed Sierra College transfer center. The CSU campus development will include three million square feet of academic and administrative space, student and faculty housing, a student center, parking structures, library, gymnasium, recreation facilities, and a performing arts center. The proposed campus is expected to be a huge economic driver in Placer County and the surrounding region. The Sunset Area Plan and the Placer Ranch Specific Plan continue to move through the environmental review process, which is required by the California Environmental Quality Act. The public has multiple opportunities to get questions answered, provide input and share concerns at multiple public meetings and hearings for this project, including opportunities to review draft and final environmental documents that analyze the plans, and review of the plans as they are proposed. Staff anticipates the release of draft environmental documents for review this spring or summer, with the final plans presented to the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors for consideration by the end of 2018. I encourage folks to offer comments and provide input at public meetings and hearings. As always, it is an honor and a privilege to serve you. We have had an infinite amount of positive experiences at the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce. We have felt the love at non-profit showcases, Ignite Happy Hours, and raffles at networking events. There is a community feeling to the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce, like an “I got your back” feeling. Like “I shoveled your sidewalk for you this morning” kind of feeling. In that same way the members mean business too. We have replaced several services at Mercy with Chamber members, and when my health insurance changed I went to a Chamber member for my dentist, because local business is the heartbeat of Roseville.
