Summer is officially here, and the year is halfway behind us. I am very proud of the work that the Chamber staff, volunteers and Board of Directors have done thus far to impact the success of our Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce (RACC). We have had record breaking attendance at our events and activities, and retention of members is thriving. The Board of Directors have been at these events and remain approachable and committed to the success of the RACC and its members more than ever. The Board of Directors look forward to the second half of the year; working hard on strategizing new and innovative ways on how our Chamber can continue its long history of success.
ROSEVILLE 2019 On behalf of the entire Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce, I want to thank all of you who attended the region’s largest annual economic trend show, Roseville 2019, held @the Grounds. We had a slightly different approach this year with a shortened timeframe and a more focused agenda, which I believe provided more value to our sponsors and attendees. I hope you all enjoyed our keynote speaker Ret. First Sergeant Matt Eversmann. Sgt. Eversmann is the decorated war hero that was portrayed by Josh Hartnett in the film Black Hawk Down. It was an honor

to get to know this American Hero! I was impressed with how Matt shared his story of his true-life experience at war and correlated its lessons to everyday leadership in business. He captivated the audience and delivered a powerful message about “strategic shock,” when life delivers circumstances where leaders are faced with situations that force them to make quick decisions that challenge core leadership abilities. It was a motivating and inspiring presentation that left us considering how we can be better leaders.
FIRE OPS 101 Serving as your Chamber President I was extended an invitation to join several city leaders in a Fire Operations Training at the Roseville Fire Training Center (FTC). This is the first of this magnitude that the Roseville Fire Department has hosted. I was honored to take part in this all-day activity to get an up close and hands-on experience of what it takes to be a fireman. Many businesses
choose Roseville for its thriving economy and reputation for safety. It is reassuring for business owners to know that in the time of need their employees and families will be well taken care of. Recently the voters of the City of Roseville passed Measure B. The success of this measure reassures investments in our important city services such as fire and police. Seeing first-hand these investments at work with the quality of training and resources available to our firemen, gives me confidence and appreciation that we have one of the best trained fire departments. I would like to extend a personal thank you to the Roseville Fire Department and the Local 1592 for providing such a great experience. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the 23rd graduating class of Leadership Roseville. Also, I hope to see everyone out at SPLASH, Roseville’s biggest party of the year, on September 14, 2019. This is going to be a spectacular event so be sure to get your tickets early!

In June, we had the privilege of graduating our 23rd Class of Leadership Roseville. 20 people are now equipped to be the next leaders in the city and region and I, along with the Steering Committee, am very excited for their futures in Roseville. Before they graduated, the Leadership Roseville class put on a Career Fair at Adelante High School, the continuation high school in Roseville. At this Career Fair, dozens of Chamber Members offered employment advice, information, and even positions to Adelante students.

This fall will be the pilot class for this program with 6 high school students from alternative high schools, Independence, and Adelante and 6 adults from the Roseville Adult School. In addition to the practical auto shop lessons, soft skills and job readiness will also be taught in these classes. It’s amazing that this partnership came because of Leadership Roseville and I’m so excited to see this new program grow.

The Accreditation Program was instituted by the U.S. Chamber to recognize effective organization performance. Only 10% of the Chambers throughout the nation successfully complete the accreditation process for this voluntary program and less than 1% achieve five-star status.

COUNTY UPDATES Collaboration, Jurisdiction, and Being Cost Effective Kirk Uhler Placer County Supervisor for District 4
For the average taxpayer, the lines between jurisdictional boundaries, and responsibilities, are blurry, at best. A Roseville resident who has been the victim of a crime doesn’t care that a Roseville cop arrested the perpetrator, that a Placer County Deputy District Attorney prosecuted him, or that a State Superior Court Judge sentenced him, he just wants justice. A Granite Bay resident doesn’t care that their sewer line ultimately connects to a Roseville regional plant for processing, they just care that when they flush the toilet, it goes down. Citizens don’t care WHICH government is doing what job, they care that we are DOING the job. To that end, we elected officials have an obligation to deliver the best, most costeffective service we can, regardless of what name is on the uniform.
There are areas where we already do this very well. The Placer County Transportation Planning Agency (PCTPA) is one such example. With representatives of each of the six incorporated cities and towns and the Board of Supervisors, PCTPA has delivered the I-80 widening from Riverside to Highway 65, the Sierra College Boulevard interchange, and the Highway 65 Bypass. Currently we are constructing the Highway 65 widening project that will bring much-needed relief to the 80/65 interchange by next Spring. Additionally, local jurisdictions frequently partner on bidding for public contracts, to make the jobs larger and drive down the price. For example, the Douglas Boulevard landscape maintenance in Granite Bay is all done
under contract from a vendor who bid on a joint Placer County/City of Rocklin Request for Proposal for landscape services. As we look to the future of public sector service delivery, governments at all levels owe it to our constituents to set aside any jurisdictional pride and ask a simple question, “Are we providing the best, most cost-effective service to the people who are paying for it?” The first challenge to overcome, even before jurisdictional turf wars, is should the government be doing it at all? Much like the landscape maintenance example, where there are more than three private sector vendors providing a service, why would we ever hire government employees to do it? If it is a legitimate public service (public health and safety), how can we identify leveraged efficiencies to reduce cost? Does the public really care if the 911 dispatcher is a Placer County employee or a Roseville employee? No, they care that help arrives. I am confident that our Board, and our respective City Councils, will continue to seek out opportunities to improve our services, and reduce our costs, for the benefit of those paying for them. I believe that in Placer County and our cities, greater things are coming.

What do you have when over 500 business leaders and professionals, along with 50+ vendors showcasing their businesses come to connect, share and influence? You have Roseville 2019, the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce’s largest annual business and networking event! This year’s event held on May 22nd in Jones and Johnson Halls @theGrounds provided the perfect backdrop for the event’s modified format. Roseville 2019 offered a shortened day, which began at 8:00 a.m. with power hour networking, ending at 1:00 p.m. Local caterers and eateries kicked-off the day with delicious breakfast fare followed by Savory Bites, lunch items with wine, champagne and
The day’s agenda included a State of the City presentation by Dominick Casey, City Manager, City of Roseville. The State of the County, was presented by Todd Leopold, CEO, Placer County. Dom and Todd presented information and key insights about the momentum of business, industry, and population growth in Roseville and Placer County. Attendees were inspired by keynote speaker, retired 1st Sergeant, Matt Eversmann, a true American hero portrayed in the epic film, Black Hawk Down and the Battle of Mogadishu. In his humble, warm, and gracious way, he shared the powerful lessons he learned in the military, while drawing parallels from his experiences to highlight the importance of leadership, courage, selfless service, and responsibility. His presentation was a testimony about how ordinary circumstances can sometimes become extraordinary challenges for any company and any team – and how a leader must be nimble and courageous to navigate through to achieve the intended outcome.

IN APRIL, UPDATES WERE GIVEN FROM ANTHEM UNITED ON THE CREEKVIEW PLAN AND IN MAY, UPDATES WERE GIVEN FROM SUTTER MEDICAL CENTER ROSEVILLE ON THEIR EXPANSION. Written by Wendy Gerig, CEO of the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce At our April Economic Development & Government Affairs Committee Meeting, we had an update from Anthem United on the Creekview Community Plan. They officially started “moving dirt” in June with the first homes to be built starting in November of 2020. The Creekview community will be located north of Blue Oaks Blvd. and will have a total of 2,000 units, 4 neighborhood parks, a future elementary school site, and multi-use trails for walking, biking, and more. Also at our April meeting, Roseville City Councilmembers Scott Alvord and Bruce Houdesheldt shared their visions for the City of Roseville and their terms. Scott expressed his passion for revitalizing Downtown Roseville and Bruce shared how he is working to bring higher education to Downtown Roseville. Additionally, Placer County Supervisor for District 4, Kirk Uhler, shared that his office would be submitting plans for the Sutter Ranch neighborhood to have a 300 acre extension campus of California State University, Sacramento. At our May meeting, we heard updates from Brian Alexander, CEO of Sutter Roseville Medical Center. Brian shared that with new construction happening, Sutter Roseville will have 382 licensed 12

beds by 2020 including 24 more critical care beds. There will also be 5 new operating rooms, 3 more cath labs, and they are expecting for their new additions to be up and running by April of 2020. Brian added that Sutter Roseville will have the largest emergency medicine department in all of Sutter Health. Brian also shared that Sutter Roseville has the largest helipad in Northern Califonria and a Level II Trauma Center that serves 7 counties. Next at our May meeting, the Placer County Law Enforcement Chaplaincy shared what their organization does. The chaplains work with all of the law enforcement agencies in PLacer County including the FBI, CHP, State Park Rangers, Probation, local police departments, Sheriff’s, and more. The
chaplains are all volunteers and have logged over 7,000 hours since 2019 started. They also assist CHP with the Every 15 Minutes program at high schools and the Right Choice program at middle schools. We also heard an update from City Councilmember Pauline Roccucci at the May meeting. Pauline shared how there will be another fire station opening in West Roseville and that there is now a social worker team added to the Roseville Police force.
