Some of you might say your schedule is challenging enough, and the thought of adding one more item to your calendar is unbearable. Well, I can certainly appreciate that! As a wife, mother, professional, and member of our community – let me just say; I understand. However, my work with the Chamber is an investment, and input equals output. So why should you try to cram time into your hectic schedules to join and actively participate in your Roseville Area Chamber? Well, perhaps it’s for the same reason I do – Chamber membership offers abundant benefits and keeps business owners and leaders on top of important, ever-changing issues and trends within our community and local marketplace. Further, it provides an opportunity for young leaders to build on their skills. As is the case with all the best things in life, I get what I give when it comes to the benefits I’m offered through my involvement with the Chamber – and I love that I can say, truly, I am more successful for it.

2. Apply to Leadership Roseville – This program is designed to educate and develop effective
community leaders. In addition, it provides a broad-based overview of how business and government affect our community.
3. Gain a voice in government – You will be able to contribute to pivotal decisions that matter to
you, as a business owner and as a Member. Our newly formed UCAN (United Chamber Advocacy Network) takes on the tough issues such as new regulations, taxes, fees, assessments, and costs directed at small businesses. We need your voice to testify how a regulation or tax is affecting your business. Go to the Roseville Area Chamber website’s advocacy page and submit your feedback or inquiries.
4. Give Back – Participate in a mentorship program where you advise a younger entrepreneur, or an up-
and-coming leader. Get involved with Ignite, our Young Professionals group. According to the 2016 Deloitte Millennial Survey, 63% of millennials say their leadership skills are not being fully developed.
5. Meet other business owners in your area – You’ll be able to bond over mutual interests, discuss challenges, refer business to each other, and may even be able to collaborate in the future on business initiatives – we encourage you to take advantage of this powerful local network.

Solutions to the Budget Gap

You may be surprised to hear that—like all California cities—the City of Roseville is facing budget challenges. While the city has done a commendable job of making difficult decisions regarding what cuts need to be made (through careful, strategic evaluation and community input), we still have a long way to go in solving this dilemma. The bottom line is this:
If we want to protect Roseville’s quality of living, we must resolve the budget gap issue. As a solution, the City has proposed a modest sales tax increase that, compared to its alternatives, is far better for Roseville’s residents and businesses. Currently, the City of Roseville has the lowest sales tax in the region, coming in at 7.25%. The proposed increase will bring us up to 7.75%. This is a small increase, especially compared to some California cities which have a sales tax rate as high as 9.25%. Not only will the sales tax increase have a low impact on those paying it, but roughly 60% will be paid by those shopping from out of town.

of the proposed sales tax will be paid by out-of-town visitors John Mason, a Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Director and member of the Engage Roseville Committee, sat in on the city meetings where options to solve the budget gap were discussed. The City has also asked for input from us, the Chamber, to figure out the best possible solution. After careful deliberation, your Board of Directors has voted unanimously to support the concept of a sales tax increase. We believe that this modest half-cent tax increase is the best possible solution for Roseville’s residents and businesses given the current budget gap that Roseville is faced with. We would like to thank the City of Roseville for doing such a thorough job of researching which expenditures are crucial to fund and which could be cut before coming to the conclusion that a new tax is necessary. We pride ourselves on creating and maintaining a quality of living that is exceptional for all who live, work and do business here, and are always advocating on behalf of you, our Members. w w w. COUNTY UPDATES Exercise Your Right To Vote

As I write, Californians are voting in the 2018 Gubernatorial Primary. Some of us are, anyway. Okay, a few. Too few. Voter turn-out is expected to barely crack thirty percent. That is thirty percent of registered voters, not eligible voters. Unbelievably, in a state which practically requires people to register to vote when they pick up their dry cleaning, fewer than three of four people are registered. So that thirty percent is of the seventy three percent registered. That means twenty two percent of eligible voters will decide for everyone else. Now, before I go any further, let me be clear – I am not one of the squishy softheads who wants everyone to vote. Frankly, if you aren’t willing to take the time to educate yourself on the issues, I don’t want you to show up and screw up the election. That said, why am I decrying a low level of voter engagement if every silent voice means my voice is a little louder? Simply, my belief in the wisdom of our Founders compels it. Ask any high school senior about the Declaration of Independence, and you will likely hear some version of, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among 4

these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” And with a smile, they will be done, proud of their recollection and feeling good about reminding you of their right to pursue happiness. What those students, and too many adults, are completely oblivious to is the admonition from our Founders which immediately follows, “That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” CONSENT OF THE GOVERNED! The Founders made it clear – the government is only allowed powers to which people have consented. The rub is, there are two ways you can provide your consent: active, informed participation reflected in vigilant engagement; passive, ignorant abandonment of civic duty. By making your voice heard through your vote, you are actively consenting or dissenting, whereas your silent voice is only construed as implied consent of the status quo. On Election Day, and every day, it is the duty of each citizen who wishes to preserve their right to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness to be informed and actively engaged…some very brave people pledged their Lives, their Fortunes and their sacred Honor to give us the opportunity. DON’T STOP TELLING YOUR STORY
It’s important to be your own best promoter. Use casual opportunities to tout your full list of services and products – you can easily highlight your capabilities on your website, in a quarterly newsletter, e-blast, or across your social media platforms. Making every effort to ensure your clients, customers and partners know the expansive breadth of the capabilities that you offer increases the chances that you’ll be their first call when something new comes up.
KNOW YOUR LIMITS
Take it one step further and be a resource for products and/or services that you don’t provide. I can’t tell you how often I’ve told potential clients that while what they needed wasn’t quite in our wheelhouse, I could refer them to someone who specialized in that area. It not only builds trust with your client or customer, who will respect when you know your limitations, but it also helps you maintain a solid bond with partners or businesses that you refer who are likely to return the favor down the road.

As small business owners, we don’t have the luxury of riding the wave of success without doing our fair share of paddling to make sure we stay afloat. Taking on new work allows you to grow your business proportionately—in terms of both staff and talent—thus
making you more appealing and marketable. Long term success comes from always should thinking about how to fill the pipeline, even when you don’t think you need to.
STAY AHEAD OF COMPETITION
It’s important to constantly monitor news, business journals, trade publications and social media to know your competition, and understand their capabilities, so you can better highlight your own. Also, keep in mind that the marketing landscape is always changing, so maintain awareness of marketing trends so you don’t seem dated in comparison to others in your industry. While we don’t have a crystal ball to help us predict what will happen, proactive planning combined with consistent marketing now can provide a solid foundation for ongoing future success. Lori M.
