One of the best things that the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce does is provide excellent networking opportunities. I have been a member since 2005 and have been a regular at mixers, lunches, breakfasts, and special events. Now, I am admittedly biased at this point, but one of the main reasons that I have made it a point to serve in various roles in the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce is because the networking opportunities they offer have been frequented by quality business-minded individuals. These networking events have helped me grow my business significantly. That being said, I would like to share six tips on how to effectively use networking, and the Chamber, to grow your business.

1. Build Relationships, Don’t Sell.

My good friend, Jim Pelley, of uLink and Laughter Works Seminars, has a great presentation where he starts by asking, “by a show of hands, how many people came to the event to sell something?” Inevitably, most of the room raises their hand. The next question is, “how many people came to buy something?” Here, almost no one raises their hand. The point is fairly obvious. Networking is not about making a sale that day at the event. Networking is about getting to know people and letting them get to know you. By building a relationship, you start to move up the list of people they will call when they need your product or service.

2. Less About You and More About Them.

In the book, How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, one of his most important suggestions is to let the other person talk more about themselves. People love to talk about themselves because it is what they know best. Letting others tell you who they are and what they do endears you to them. It will also help you to remember them and things about them the next time you meet.

3. Be Consistent and Persistent.

So often I hear new business owners lament that a networking event was a waste of time. I understand the frustration of trying to grow a business and wanting to use one’s time the most effectively one can.

However, networking takes consistency. Trust is built a little at a time. Expecting immediately growth is a recipe for frustration. The business owners that I have seen have the most success are those who go to the same networking events consistently with dogged persistence. When everyone knows your name, you become the expert in the room, and that is a great path to growing your business.

4. Get Involved and Serve.

If you have a hard time going up to a complete stranger and introducing yourself, then get involved by serving. I have found it is much easier to ask how I can help or just jump in and work where it is clear that work needs to be done, rather than to just introduce myself. There are so many ways to serve, such as becoming an ambassador or sitting on one of the various committees. You could also just show up a little early or stay a little late to help, which goes a long way with making an impression.

5. Have Fun!

Finally, the most important thing about networking is to have fun. I know this may sound obvious, but nobody wants to network with a downer. Smile and enjoy yourself!

We couldn’t be happier with how our biggest event of the year, Roseville 2017, turned out! Bayside Blue Oaks Campus was an absolutely beautiful venue for the occasion, and their staff was attentive and helpful throughout the day.

Representatives from businesses all over the Roseville area and beyond were in attendance to experience the premier regional economic development trendshow and networking event.

Those who attended took full advantage of the many opportunities to connect with like-minded professionals, and to build on new or already-established relationships. Additionally, the speakers for our Roseville Talks and Keynote Panel sessions provided the audience with informative and compelling content to help them further develop their professional skills.

A special thank you to all of our volunteers for their hard work and dedication to creating a successful event. The 22nd annual SPLASH event will take place at the beautiful Roseville Aquatics Complex on September 9th, 2017 from 6:30pm to 10:00pm. There will be restaurants, wineries, and breweries, from all over Roseville and Northern California, showing off their latest and greatest foods, drinks, and desserts. We will also have 2 live bands (Harmonics Steelband and 80’z All-Stars) performing some great dancing music for attendees to enjoy throughout the evening. Over 1,100 people attended SPLASH in 2016, and we hope to have even more people join us this year.

Reallocating Our Tax Dollars How We Can Better Fund Our Infrastructure and Lessen the Burden on Future Taxpayers Kirk Uhler

One of my fundamental political core beliefs has always been that the purpose of government is to provide services to the people who pay for them.

The primary role of government should be to provide those things that productive people need to be productive. As a businessman, I can’t build my own roads, deliver water, sewer and electricity, or provide my own police and fire services, yet each of these is a necessary component to my success.

Accordingly, I pay taxes (property, sales, income, business/corporate, gas and various impact fees) to assure the provision of those services which create the environment for commerce.

Increasingly, and with shocking rapidity, government at all levels is growing in size and scope, spending less time and money delivering our core services, and more time and money on “social engineering”, trying to figure out new ways to regulate our behavior. Perhaps the most egregious example of this is the fatally-flawed, dead-man-walking project inappropriately called the bullet train. This massive boondoggle is billions over budget and years behind schedule, yet Governor Brown and his ilk continue to insist that it is in our best interest to continue to drain off our limited transportation resources to pay for his pet project rather than fix our third-world roads or create any new lane capacity (oh, and if we actually want the government to fix our roads and increase lane capacity, we have to swallow a huge new tax on our gas and our cars).

Even more pressing on governments’ ability to provide services today is the cost of paying for services 4

provided years ago. Simply put, the exploding cost of meeting our pension obligations is imperiling our ability to provide services today. Salaries and benefits paid by Placer County are projected in increase by 31% over the next four years, driven primarily by skyrocketing payments we are being forced to make to CalPERS as they reduce their earnings projections on their investment portfolios. In fact, in the next seven years, our annual required contribution to CalPERS will double from $54 million in FY 17-18 to $110 million in FY 24-25. As more money goes to pay the pensions of current and former employees, fewer dollars are available for roads and other services. In fact, in just four years the Salaries and Benefits line of our budget will grow from 35% of all general fund expenditures to 42% of all general fund expenditures. This is not a sustainable model.

Local governments need the flexibility to move away from the current defined benefit (pension) retirement model to a defined contribution (401(k)) model, just as almost all private industry has done in recent years.

This would allow us to pay for a service provided at the time it is provided and not create an on-going obligation for future taxpayers. We would keep faith with current enrolled employees while transitioning all new hires to the defined contribution model.

Over time, our unfunded liability would disappear, as would the enormous payment we have to make to CalPERS. Unfortunately, state legislation is required for this to happen, which means we can expect this change about the same time as the first bullet train load of riders gets delivered from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

HOW PLANNING AND CONSISTENCY CAN HELP LEAD TO BUSINESS SUCCESS Prosio Communications CEO, Lori Prosio, took a chance after more than 17 years in the PR and advertising industry, and launched her own marketing and communications firm in 2013. Knowing the risk and hard work that owning a business requires, Prosio has successfully built her firm from the ground up, and has had the opportunity to work on campaigns and projects for numerous businesses, government agencies and nonprofit organizations. She shares a few tips she has learned along the way that new and even seasoned business owners will benefit from.

After recently celebrating four years as a business owner, there are still moments where I find it hard to believe that I’m able to do what I love every day. The road to business success is never easy, but here are a few tips that I’ve learned along the way.

ANTICIPATE GROWTH, AND PLAN FOR IT As a small business, it’s hard to see beyond the current challenges you face, and the immediate needs that you have. However, to have long-term sustainable success, you must plan for what’s down the road.

When I first started Prosio Communications, I had a plan for growth, including the type of clients I wanted to work with, the number of staff I needed and the size I wanted my business to be in the long run.

When I leased my first office with just three staff, I negotiated a lease that would allow me to move into a larger space with no penalty or costs, should I outgrow our “starter” space.

Within a year, and at a staff of eight, I exercised my option to build a bigger office to accommodate an increase in staff, which has now grown to 16.

Think about the future needs of your business, not just what you think you’ll do today, or next month.

NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK Networking is essential to the growth and success of your business. Soon after opening my business, I joined

the Roseville Area Chamber and its business leadership program. Doing so helped me invest in the Roseville business community and learn more about ways to run a successful business in this market. It also allowed me to increase the profile of my business and access new helpful resources, while paving the way for my future appointment as a chamber board member.

Attend chamber events and other networking events, or seek board opportunities with local charities.

Inevitably, you’re helping other businesses while marketing your own. Networking should be seen as an investment, the effort will reward you with resources and long-term relationships.

MAINTAIN YOUR BRAND In building my business I’ve learned to practice what I preach. That means applying all of the tools that I encourage my clients to implement.

Frequently I step back to make sure that I am doing everything to build and market my business the way I would guide a client to do. This means establishing and maintaining a steadfast brand yet

remaining flexible enough to adjust to trends. Your business needs to be representative of the work you do and the philosophies you subscribe to – this will generate awareness among the industry, and support ongoing recognition of your brand.

Building a business is hard work and while the risks may be high, the rewards are great. Stick to it and keep looking forward because every day as a business owner is an adventure you can be proud that you’re on.

Unlike most members, I do not have a brick and mortar business. I wanted to find a way to have my ribbon cutting ceremony, but not at my home. I was offered to have it at the Chamber Office.
