n T.H. White’s tale, “The Once and Future King,” Merlyn is trying to help a newly crowned King Arthur understand the history of his people so as to help him understand how he can shape the future. Arthur, in his humility, questions whether he shouldn’t abdicate the throne to appease the Jared Thomas D.C. perceived past injustices of the various factions of his Thomas Chiropractic subjects, which would ultimately lead to breaking up the kingdom. This leads Merlyn to exclaim, “The destiny of man is to unite not to divide. If you keep on dividing, you end up as a collection of monkeys throwing nuts at each other in separate trees.” This quote is also relevant to our business community today. It has been an honor to sit on the board for the past several years and to serve as an ambassador previously. I am humbled and flattered to serve now as the President and know quite well that I have a legacy to maintain. I have witnessed and benefited from being part of such a strong Chamber of Commerce. I have seen the power of businesses of various sizes coming together to make our community such a great place to work, live, and do business. For years, the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce has been the best kept secret around. Whether a business is a member or not, the Chamber has been their best advocate for a business friendly environment. The Chamber’s influence comes from good relations with local government, key businesses, and the membership in general. How much more influential could we be if we were united with every business in our community? As Merlyn said, we are destined to unite and prosper or to divide, fighting each other. If we unite, can we make the Roseville area an even bigger power player in the Sacramento business region? Can we ensure that Placer County remains a great place to start a business or to bring an existing business to prosper? With every business in the area united, can we influence the State to make it affordable to run and operate a business in California? Can we keep our community an even better place to raise a family, get an education, be a successful employee, and participate in local events? Can we continue to improve tourism and have the Roseville area the perfect place to host a soccer tournament or other sporting event? I believe we can do all of this and more if we are united. If you are reading this, chances are you are already a member. If so, will you encourage your business contacts in the area to join us? If not, will you have your business join us? Please help us as you help yourself by making the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce bigger, stronger, and even more influential. I know you are busy. I know that not every business is interested in networking or serving on a committee. That’s OK! Your membership is a tremendous value whether you get involved or not. Don’t get me wrong, we appreciate involvement, but just joining is enough. As business owners and employees, we may not agree on everything but we can all agree that a thriving local economy is paramount for the success of most businesses. The Chamber understands this and has been very successful in shaping our community in this very purpose. Please, join with us to not only keep it that way but to make it even better.

very year, we begin anew with talk of New Year’s Resolutions and vow to make this year better than the last. This is just as true here at the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce. Our mission is to provide value to our members, promote the needs of the business industry and to create the best community in which to live, work and do business. In 2016, we worked hard, on your behalf, to fulfill our promise to you, our members.

Coordinated with the City of Roseville to host the 2016 State of the City function.

Every year, we send out our Annual Membership Survey and make changes to our programs and services based on your input. Our members drive our organization and the decisions we make so please make sure you are heard. T
he Roseville Area Chamber Annual Installation Dinner is an evening to honor and celebrate the people with steadfast commitment to the success of the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Roseville. This is the Chamber’s foremost occasion to dine with local business leaders and visionaries, to celebrate our incoming President and Board of Directors. We are proud to announce Jared Thomas D.C. of Thomas Chiropractic will serve as our 2017 Board President. Dr. Jared Thomas has built a thriving practice in Roseville and will lead the Board of Directors to strengthen the local economy and to promote our community. The Chamber will also be kicking off its 70th year at this very special occasion. Jim Pelley, comedian, workplace humorist, and former contributing writer for Saturday Night Live, is guaranteed to make this the funniest Installation Dinner ever! This evening is an opportunity to celebrate and honor those who have a futurist perspective in bettering South Placer County. CELEBRATING Two significant community awards will also be presented during the Installation Dinner to individuals who have successfully surpassed all expectations. The ATHENA Award, which is presented by First Northern Bank, will be given to someone who has attained and personified the highest level of professional excellence in their business or profession; someone who has devoted time and energy to the community in a meaningful way and most especially, has generously assisted women in attaining their full potential. The Edward M. Friedman Community Service Award will be given to a member of the South Placer County community for their significant involvement in matters of business and professional competence and ethics, community service, community leadership or charitable giving.

University of Warwick Looks to Bring Graduate School to
D
owntown Roseville may get a new addition that could transform the properties along Dry Creek and in turn greatly enhance downtown revitalization. Rob Jensen City Manager
The University of Warwick, a United Kingdom-based university, outlined its plans to bring a permanent graduate school to downtown Roseville at the November Roseville City Council meeting. With both the University of Warwick and Sierra College locating in Roseville, students will have a range of higher education options right in downtown. Both will draw students and professors, adding new energy and making downtown an even stronger destination into the evening hours. The first step would be the sale of Fire Station No. 1 at 401 Oak Street to Warwick. At the November Council meeting, the Council approved entering into negotiations with the University Development Trust on behalf of the University of Warwick on the sale. This is an ideal re-use of an existing building. Construction is scheduled to begin on a new Fire Station No. 1 at Lincoln Street and Oak Street this spring. Our Fire Administration moved from this location into our new office building at 316 Vernon Street at the beginning of 2016, immediately freeing up that space in the 6

Downtown Roseville building. Fire operations will continue in the 401 Oak Street location until the new station opens. Warwick has been a strong partner and its plans support priorities that the Council has focused on for many years. In particular, the project addresses the Roseville City Council’s 2017-2018 goals for developing and promoting economic development, creation of a great downtown, higher education and for encouraging investment in the City’s core neighborhoods. The sale may also include options for Warwick to purchase city-owned lots on either side of the fire station for future expansion including teacher/student housing and classroom space. The 401 Oak Street location interior would be remodeled and upgraded to meet educational needs. Warwick plans to establish a new school which will begin offering graduate courses in 2018 upon approval by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education. In addition to the prospective downtown graduate school, Warwick officials continue to develop plans for a 6,000-student undergraduate campus in west Placer County, along the city’s border.
