aving just enjoyed the festivities of the 4th, I find myself pondering independence.

Every year we celebrate our victory in a war over what we considered to be unfair and undue influence from outsiders.

Today we all enjoy the freedoms gained through our national independence. From the day we are born we strive toward independence from our parents.

As adults we work to achieve financial independence.

When I was young I thought independence meant that I had to be totally self-sufficient and in need of no one. I learned over time that independence meant that I should be making my own decisions and setting my own path and not allowing others to do it for me or to me and that needing help had nothing to do with it.

When RSTI was founded, the OEMs had a virtual monopoly in the medical imaging service field. Sure there were a few Biomedical Service Departments that were dabbling in imaging service, but by and large the OEMs had a lock on service. RSTI started when microprocessors were still in the early stages of integration into X-Ray systems so “service keys” and passwords weren’t around yet. Not providing manuals, tech support, replacement parts and high quality service training were the tools used to keep hospitals dependent on the OEMs. RSTI was the first independent training center and has always been dedicated to the concept that, with the proper education, one of the most restrictive influences of the OEMs could be reduced. Our innovative X-Ray Certificate Series teaches aspiring X-Ray service professionals that there really is no mystery in the way imaging systems function and that aside from minor variations to avoid patent violation they all work the same and do the same things.

After the X-Ray Certificate Series, we developed Product and Modality specific training that focuses on how specific systems function and how to best troubleshoot and maintain them. These classes reduce the need to call the OEM for routine as well as in-depth service issues.

After training, imaging centers are no longer dependent on the manufacturer for all of their service needs and they enter more of a partnership where the in-house group handles 90 to 95% of the work and the OEM is called in only for the most difficult problems.

Today we continue to develop new training packages that help to maintain service independence even in the face of changing technologies, reduced service documentation, passwords, service keys and training restrictions by the OEMs. Our labs are filled with current technology that is used not only in advanced product-specific training but is integrated into the basic X-Ray training as well.

RSTI’s training gives service managers independence, in that they are in control of their service decisions. They can have their people handle preventative maintenance only, routine service, tackle all service issues, or have the OEM do everything. There are risks and costs associated with each of these. Being able to choose is what having properly trained people allows you to do.

Tech Update All About Motion Controls

By Mike Petelin RSTI Instructor Continuing from the last issue, I will be discussing motion controls in medical imaging systems, specifically stepper motors.

Stepper motors are DC motors that divide a full 360 degree rotation into equal “steps.” The position can be set, and held, at a specific step.

The number of steps in a stepper motor is determined during the engineering phase of the motor and can vary widely. I will be discussing a very theoretical four step model below

The motor itself consists of multiple electromagnets and a permanent magnet. When a single electromagnet is energized the permanent magnet will be rotated to coincide with the energized electromagnet. For example, in the diagram above, if electromagnet “B” was energized in such a way to create a north pole, the permanent magnet would move counter-clockwise until its south pole was aligned with magnet “B.” This would be referred to as a whole-step. A half-step could be achieved by energizing Both the “C” and “B” magnets causing the permanent magnet to stop between the “B” and “C” magnets.

The stepper motor does not offer much benefit if it is not associated with a controller. A stepper motor controller handles the logic that energizes each magnet to move the permanent magnet a predetermined number of steps.

Stepper motors and stepper motor controllers typically have no idea where the armature is currently located, only how many steps it has to move from its current unknown location. This can be overcome in a system by adding optical motion interrupts or potentiometers to the system to determine the current location in relation to the final destination.

Digital radiologic imaging systems use a wide variety of flat panel detectors whose makeup is of a photostimulable storage phosphor (PSP). This is the material which is used to store/transfer the im age charge information. This includes amorphous selenium, amorphous silicon, charged coupled d vice (CCD), and metal oxide semiconductor-field effect transistor (MOSFET). The purpose of this a cle is to evaluate each of these materials and describe the advantages of each.

What’s the Difference?

The following shows the makeup of the two different FPDs with a brief description of their operation. This is followed by a check list that will show you the strength and weakness and allow you to choose which panel is right for your application.

With a-Silicon FPD a layer of cesium iodide CsI is attached to the a-silicon array and when radiation strikes the input phosphor it gives off light like an image intensifier. The light output is transferred to the Amorphous Silicon Array and the equivalent charge is stored waiting transfer. Since the light is spread through the CsI, image quality (MTF) is primarily determined by the quality of the CsI layer. (See Fig. B) With Amorphous Selenium FPD the radiation strikes the Selenium layer and the x-ray is converted to an electrical signal thus eliminating the conversion of light and the scatter created by the CsI. This produces a higher MTF and somewhat better image quality.

OEC 9800 Rev. 30 Changes

Lately I’ve been getting questions about the OEC 9800 Rev. 30 upgrade. The most common question is “What did they change?”

Well, it could have been a little or a lot depending on the vintage of your system and how many previous upgrades it received.

Let’s start with the workstation. There are some minor changes to the covers (internal to the system) and maybe a couple of shiny new stickers on the outside. In the electronics enclosure, any of the circuit boards might have been replaced with PCBs of the proper revision. Rev. 30 machines also get the Celeron single board computer. This SBC is easy to spot as the memory cards are mounted vertically at the edge of the board farthest from the backplane. The old SBC has them mounted horizontally at the bottom edge of the board. The control panel processor remains the same.

The hard disk is also replaced with a solid state PATA hard drive. I predict that these will soon be further replaced by solid state SATA drives with an IDE adapter as PATAs are going extinct.

The SIM wizard will also walk you through software installation once you have generated a SIM floppy. You will need RUS, your SIM floppy, your Rev. 30 CD and a network cable. The load will occur through the network cable and the NIC is now on the single board computer.

You will need the workstation’s IP and subnet mask and you may have to change these items on your service laptop as well as disabling your wireless in order to connect. I have also had a machine that did not have the NIC enables in the BIOS! Easy fix but it took a while to find!

The single biggest change is the way that your Rev. 30 software arrives and the method of installation.

Gone are the six floppy disks for software reloads.

In the case of the C-arm, again we find some new stickers on the outside and a new Generator Interface Board (GIB) replacing the old X-Ray Controller Board.

Rev. 30 comes on a compact disk now. You WILL still use a floppy, but now it is a single floppy known as a SIM disk. SIM stands for “Simplified Installation Manager” and you can make one using your Remote Utility Suite (RUS).

Should you have to erase the ARCNET program flash on the GIB at some time in the future, be aware that doing so through RUT will also erase ALL of your C-arm calibration data. This includes Generator, Collimator and Camera calibration data. Erasing the GIB with the external keyboard and debug monitor preserves this data in my experience.

Simply launch RUS and then click on the SIM icon in the menu bar. You do NOT need to launch the Remote Utility Tool (RUT) at this time. After clicking on the SIM icon the SIM wizard will launch. Click the “NEXT” button on the first two pages. The third page will give you the option of making a SIM floppy. Simply click on the button and follow the wizard’s instructions.

That being said, the easiest way to protect your investment and increase uptime is to simply clone the hard drive. Cloning will be discussed in a future article.

Drew’s Road Trip A Six-Week Journey

I have been on the road for about six weeks. Along the way, I taught a few offsite classes, attended AAMI and even fit in some vacation time. Here’s a look back at my tour.

First stop

was Roanoke, VA for the Siemens AXIOM Artis class at First Call Parts.

RSTI and FCP recently agreed to work together to provide this training for our customers. The class was great! We covered both generators, floor and ceiling stand, and imaging systems. We had five students in attendance. FCP has two AXIOM Artis installed in a custom built classroom. One is an II system and the other a flat panel system. This situation worked well for lecture and hands on. Going forward RSTI will provide the training and FCP will provide the equipment for this class. Call RSTI to register and get the details.

Second stop

was in Long Beach, CA for AAMI. Great show! It was very well attended this year with high interest in training. That makes RSTI a good booth to have. I found it interesting that we were at AAMI and my booth was across from Medical Dealer who puts on MD EXPO, another show that is well worth the money and time to attend. RSTI will continue to support our industry and shows like this.

Third stop

was beautiful Nashville, TN. It was here that RSTI is teaching the GE Innova 4100 class at ReMedPar. We provide both the GE 500D and the 4100 training at ReMedPar facilities located just north of the city. This class provides the students with plenty of hands on and troubleshooting.

A very good prep for going back to your facility and taking these off contract!

Cancellation Policy - Tuition is only refundable if cancellation is received in writing by RSTI at least 14 calendar days prior to the course or seminar date. Allow 30 days for receipt of the refund. Registrants who cancel within 14 days of the course or seminar date will have the tuition transferred to another course or seminar on a space available basis. In the event that a course does not attain our minimum enrollment, RSTI may postpone it. Paid tuition will remain on account to be applied to the rescheduled class.

Payment Due Policy - Payment for all courses and/or seminars is due three full weeks in advance of the course start date. Purchase orders are accepted, but also must be paid one week prior to the course start date. We also accept VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover as a method of payment. All past due invoices will be assessed a late fee of 1.5% per month on any unpaid balances.

Schedule - Typically, courses run from 8:30 am-4:30 pm Monday through Friday. You will receive a detailed schedule when we confirm your registration. You should schedule your incoming flight to arrive Sunday afternoon or evening. On the last Friday, class ends at 12:00 noon. You may schedule your return flight any time in the mid- to late-afternoon.

Full Coverage Package - You are responsible for expenses you incur while attending courses. However, RSTI has negotiated a reduced package rate that includes 12 nights hotel accommodations, transportation between the hotel and training center, breakfast, and lunch. We will notify you of this rate when you enroll; if you wish, we can add the full coverage package cost to your tuition.
