2. PENETRATION: Just how many units are out there, so that we can precisely gauge what the demand for training might be.

For example, GE sold approximately 1500 Innova Cath Labs as of 2008, according to their published figures. Five years later, RSTI is now teaching the entire product line from the Innova 2000 Cath Lab, the 3100 Angio Lab and the 4100 Vascular Lab. Whenever possible RSTI teaches the entire family of a product line, but that’s when affordability comes into play.

3. PRICING: Price is not determined by anything but

our internal calculation of how we can provide this educational service for a reasonable price as follows: Training has never been only about the lowest price, but the quality of the retained information.

President’s Letter Formula for the Future The repair and maintenance of diagnostic imaging equipment has been the Mission Statement for RSTI for many years. Terry’s original vision has been modified over time, but the foundation of our business is based on teaching YOU how to manage and care for your diagnostic imaging equipment. Historically, when the equipment changed or a new product was introduced it went on our RSTI radar screen. Our formula today is much more complex and looks like this on the purchasing side:

1. RESEARCH: Where are the OEMs going and why? Develop a timeline from introduction to find out if it is successful, gets modified or eliminated over the first five years. If the x-ray equipment has revisions, changes or even new models over time, we know we have a new system for training. For example, we have trained on GE AMX products, because AMX has been around since the 80’s and it has even made the transition to DR. 2 | FOCALSPOT.WINTER.2013

We try hard to limit the number of days to the least amount of time possible to deliver training excellence in the classroom and labs. A properly educated and motivated imaging professional will end up retaining at best 50% when he heads home. The depth at which a class can be taught is directly proportional to the average competence of the student group. High class average means the instructor is allowed to go much deeper into the mechanical, electrical and digital troubleshooting for the benefit of the class. On the other hand a low class average means a painstakingly slow course with tons of repetition and refreshing the classes’ knowledge of basic electronics or computer hardware and software.

4. VALUE: It stands to reason that if the machine or

machines needed to teach the course will cost RSTI less than say $50,000, you can expect a lower price for a university quality education on the product. Years ago our methods for obtaining equipment depended on training credits and donated equipment. Occasionally we salvaged a good machine to the credit of our experienced instructor group. Primarily to boost retention, “hands-on” became our mantra for every year of the 28 we have been here.

Today we spend from $100,000 on the low side to $350,000 on the high side to bring you a class of absolute necessity. For example, RSTI, in 2010 had to buy a brand new OEC 9900 Mobile C-Arm to launch that class. We spent $160,000 for the model we needed, which demanded that we charge $5,000 for the course.

Invest in Yourself Now that you have some insight as to how RSTI built our labs with more than $5,000,000 of our own dollars, I hope you now have an informed perspective. New, game-changing technology happens almost every year. We plan to have this technology approximately 5 years hence, when the warranties and OEM contracts expire. The cost/benefit ratio on the Innova class is extremely attractive if you plan to keep your room for more than the life of the OEM contract. With socialized medicine here, it will be imperative that everyone extend life and cut hard costs wherever possible. Imaging maintenance is the budget to slash, not the number of nurses or others needing help. If you have one Innova, it costs you approximately 10% of its purchase price to keep it running 24x7. Average price for a new system is a million bucks plus, so you have a hard cost of $100,000 per year to expect…If you train your existing staff, you can save 50% of that cost for sure and possibly more. If you train your person for $15,000, you get triple your investment back in the first year. Education conducted professionally with a knowledgeable instructor, a thorough, detailed curriculum and equipment ready to be handled any way necessary is the single best way to save money in a hospital. You can outsource all day long, but a well educated staff will lower your costs permanently. Lastly, RSTI will continue to fine-tune our labs with as much relatively current equipment as we can afford. Currently the DR investments are very high, and we make no apology for the prices charged; however, we have decided in this post-election world with new healthcare laws in place, that RSTI would offer some courses at prices I have not seen in my 13 years. 1. PACS 1 & PACS 2 have been two of our most successful courses. Taught by Mr. Todd Boyland, you are transported into the IT world of bits and bytes, like I have never seen before. RSTI combines all of the certifications needed to make you not only digitally

savvy, but a leader in all things that are digitally produced or integrated. Each class has been $4,995. We have made the class affordable to all at $2,995 for each class. It is number one on this list for a reason. 2. Until the Precision 500, the Advantx Family, including Legacy, Advantx, and the Advantx E were the premier R/F Rooms in hospitals globally. They still have more combined penetration than the Precision 500, so we have decided to offer this $5,995 course for $2,995. It is a remarkable course, taught by a remarkable instructor, Mr. Dale Cover. Someone may match the price and tell you that they can pull someone from the field to train you in 3 days. Find the time to do it right and enjoy the savings we provide. 3. The AMX 4 Portable is necessary training for every imaging professional. Hospitals and hospital systems can have 5 to 50 of these machines flying around every day. Mike Petelin teaches the class and has done so at $2995 for years. RSTI will now offer this course for $1,995. All of these courses will book quickly, but especially this one. 4. Multivendor Mammography is taught by John Drew. He is one of our Master Instructors and in two weeks he can teach you GE, Lorad, and Siemens analog mammography machines top to bottom. Learn each OEM’s style, so that you can work on any of their analog systems. This class has been at $5,995 for years, and now it’s available at $2,995. 5. The Lorad M-IV class includes ACR and taught can be done in one week. The 2-week class used to be $4,995. Now for less time and less money, Matt Mondello can teach you everything you need to know. It’s now priced at $2,495. RSTI continues to teach the newest imaging technology available like the GE Innova family and the Siemens Axiom Artis family. We complement that with incredible pricing on the older portables and R/F, with a digital class everyone needs whether you are in management or actually doing the work yourself.

Course Update: LightSpeed Exciting Changes for LightSpeed Class Dale Cover, VP Equipment Sales

RSTI has made some changes to our GE LightSpeed course. First, we have added a LightSpeed to our labs so we will be able to teach this class at our facility. Second, what we are really excited about is that we have also added a BrightSpeed. Here’s the best part. After some evaluation of the BrightSpeed, we have determined that we can add the BrightSpeed system to one of our existing classes to deliver a combined LightSpeed/BrightSpeed course. The LightSpeed class was designed as a multi-product class, by that we mean it covered several models of the LightSpeed series CTs. After examining the BrightSpeed CTs we have found that there is enough shared technology between the two series of systems to present them in one class. This does require that the student has taken CT Phase I and Phase II or has significant experience with other GE CT systems.

Does Your Sales Team Need Training? Intro to Diagnostic Imaging for Managers & Sales Course John Drew, VP Sales & Marketing

We have been asked on many occasions if we offered a class for sales teams. Well now we are happy to say, “YES!” NEW COURSE: INTRODUCTION TO DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING FOR MANAGERS & SALES Many companies sell diagnostic imaging equipment, parts and accessories. The issue has been they may not know much about x-ray systems or the individual parts they are selling. Some have never seen a complete x-ray room other than in a picture. RSTI has a “second life” in mind for your used imaging equipment. This 2.5-day class will focus on what your sales team should know to enable them sell more systems or parts. Not physics, not electronics, just the information the sales team needs to know. Radiographic, Fluoroscopic, C-Arms, CR, DR, Mobiles and Mammography will all be covered. Topics of discussion include but are not limited to the following:

All of these answers and more will ensure that your sales staff has a better understanding of a diagnostic imaging system. The objective is to prepare your salespeople to sell more equipment and parts by handling the transactions more intelligently. In addition, while classroom time is great, we will put quite a bit of emphasis on the lab portion of instruction. We want your sales engineers to get hands-on time with the equipment. Nowhere else will they have the opportunity to see, feel, and operate so many different pieces of equipment in one place at one time. Call now to register for 2013 classes and get a jump start on your competition!

Private Practice X-ray Multivendor Training By David Domanski RSTI Instructor Winter here in Northeast Ohio is an ever changing phenomenon, and as the seasons take shape, so do the outlines for new courses that we are offering here at RSTI. In the last newsletter, I asked for your opinions on the generators that you would like to see covered in a multivendor, private practice x-ray course. The list looked like this:

Which generators would you like to see covered in this class? Del Medical / Universal? CPI? Sedecal? Summit? The front runners at this time appear to be CPI and SEDECAL. Since these generators are used in MANY different rooms and interfaced with many manufacturers’ image receptors, tables and tubestands, the class would focus primarily on the generators themselves. Following is a list of the topics we will be covering: As before, the course includes the XR/d 1X platform & the XQ/i. Installation Line Matching

In other words, we will teach you everything you will need to effectively service and repair these units. Sign up now for classes being offered on January 28-February 1 or April 29-May 3. You opinion still counts, of course, and the generators included in this course are not written in stone. So if a Multivendor Private Practice X-ray Systems class is of interest to you, please drop me a line at ddomanski@rsti-training.com and include a list of the generators that YOU would like to see offered in the class. I look forward to seeing you in class!

“After Action” Report Shimadzu MobileArt Portables Course By Matt Mondello RSTI Instructor

Well, the world has not ended if you’re reading this newsletter. And with another successful year under our belts, RSTI has once again made many additions to our training portfolio to meet the needs of our constantly evolving industry. This article highlights one of those many additions. In a previous article, “New Season, New Training” we talked about the addition of two new courses to our portable x-ray line of training. One course in particular has gained considerable interest from the service professionals we serve. RSTI successfully completed the Shimadzu MobileArt Portables Course, an industry first. This training program is designed to provide service engineers the opportunity to become intimately familiar with Shimadzu’s methodology behind their portable systems. By dissecting the portable systems in a controlled classroom and lab environment, the students were able to gain a more thorough understanding of the system as a whole. Troubleshooting, repair/replacement of parts (if needed), calibrations and general system function quickly and easily became demystified as the week long course progressed. In the end, the need for the expensive OEM service calls had all but been eliminated, empowering local facilities and third party services to take control of their own portable x-ray equipment and the maintenance needed to keep them fully operational. This first course focused primarily on the MobileArt Plus as well as the generators that are pretty standard across the board for all Shimadzu portable systems. There was conversation and lecture about the interface with the Canon Digital upgrades and fully digital 10 | FOCALSPOT.WINTER.2013

systems, i.e. the MobileDart, so future classes will include a more in depth discussion and more class time devoted to the digital side of the portable units. For information about our Shimadzu MobileArt Portables Course or any other course we have to offer, go to our website http://www.rsti-training.com/ or contact our registrar, Anna Morrison at registration@ rsti-training.com.

The next class is offered on March 25-29, 2013. I’m looking forward to seeing you in class in the New Year!

Calling All Students By Terry Speth

RRRIIINNNNGGG – “Hello?” “Hi, this is Terry Speth with RSTI. You probably already know that RSTI provides the best independent service training available, but did you know that we also buy and sell imaging systems? I am calling to find out if your facility has any equipment that is being replaced now or in the near future. If you don’t have anything now, I would like to send you some information about how RSTI can be of assistance when you do.” We are planning on calling you soon to ask what pre-owned equipment your facility might have. It could be old equipment you want removed and disposed of, a machine you’re trading in for an upgrade or even an end-of-life machine. If you are a facility that has equipment in storage and don’t know what to do with it, you can turn it in to CASH! You’ve heard the phrase “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” right? You may be storing the perfect parts unit for someone. There is a great demand for pre-owned equipment overseas, too. If you don’t hear from us in the near future and you have some equipment you’d like us to take off your hands, we would love to hear from you. We can offer what no one else can, RSTI TRAINING CREDITS!!! Think of this as a way to enhance your training experience. Using your old equipment for training is a great way to get back to RSTI. So call us. We always love to hear stories about classes, student night out, or even bad jokes that our instructors told. If you want to come back for class and it is not in your budget, this is your answer. Training or CASH, whatever works best for you! Email Darrel Kile, or me, Terry Speth, a list of equipment, or piece of equipment you have available. It’s easy and won’t take much time. Usually we can tell you immediately what the value is and what we can offer you. If you are planning on removing rooms in the next few months, that’s great too. We can help you schedule the removal, de-install and/or pick up the equipment ourselves. We also can sell your machine for you on consignment.

I promise we’ ll be nice. See how harmless we look?
