DURATION 22 minutes Allegro aperto Adagio non troppo Rondo: Allegretto Oboists everywhere owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the 20th-century Mozart scholar and conductor Bernhard Paumgartner, director of the Salzburg Mozarteum archives. In 1920 Paumgartner unearthed Mozart’s longbelieved-lost Oboe Concerto in C Major in a package of manuscript parts, simultaneously solving the riddle as to why Mozart’s Flute Concerto No2 in D Major made so little use of the flute’s shiniest high registers – because that concerto was in fact the lost Oboe Concerto, reworked by Mozart shortly afterwards so as to get quickly done and dusted a rather trying two-concerto commission from an amateur flautist.

Back to the Concerto’s origins: this was a 1777 work, written by the 21-year-old composer in his final months as concertmaster of the Salzburg court orchestra. Its dedicatee was his new friend (and apparently an all-round favourite) Giuseppe Ferlendis, who had joined the ensemble in April that year. Mozart clearly knew he’d composed a winner too, because when he resigned from his post that September and set out for Mannheim with the aim of making a splash, he took the Concerto with him, and wasted no time in presenting it to the Mannheim Orchestra oboist Friedrich Ramm. It did indeed make a splash, the delighted Ramm giving it so many repeat performances that Mozart gleefully described it in a letter back to his father as Ramm’s ‘warhorse’.

It’s easy to see how Ramm fell in love. Scored for an orchestra of strings, oboes and horns, the Concerto’s joyous opening movement plays superbly to the oboe’s capacity for jauntiness.

Its many lovely touches include the soloist entering with an imitation of the popular singer’s ‘messa di voce’ trick of a fast upwards scale followed by sustaining a long, high note while the orchestra continues with the theme underneath – some cross-pollination here with Mozart’s burgeoning career as an opera composer.

The exquisite slow movement equally echoes the operatic stage in its flowing, aria-like writing, playing to the oboe’s capacity for tonally penetrating, long-lined lyricism. Mozart then brings things to a merry climax with a finale which tosses the cross-pollination back in the other direction – its jubilant rondo refrain was one he’d later reuse in his 1781 opera, Die Entführung aus dem Serail. © Charlotte Gardner

Adrian has worked as a guest principal with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Northern Sinfonia, London Mozart Players, Northern Chamber Orchestra, Psappha and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group.

Adrian has been the Principal Oboe of the RSNO since 2014.

His early studies were at the Junior Royal Academy of Music in London. During this time he was twice a finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition and was principal oboe of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. He went on to read Mathematics and Music at the University of Birmingham, followed by a Postgraduate Performance course at the Birmingham Conservatoire, where he studied the oboe with George Caird and Jonathan Kelly. He returned to the RAM to learn with Douglas Boyd and Celia Nicklin, winning numerous prizes and becoming principal oboe of the European Union Youth Orchestra. In 2002 he was appointed principal oboe of Southbank Sinfonia and continued his studies with Alexei Ogrintchouk in Rotterdam and Paris.

In addition to being Principal Oboe of the RSNO, Adrian is the oboist with the flexible chamber group Ensemble 360, who appear regularly at London’s Wigmore Hall and at UK

Adrian’s concerto performances include Mozart’s Oboe Concerto and Vaughan Williams’ Oboe Concerto with the RSNO, Donizetti’s Oboe Concertino, Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante and Ennio Morricone’s Gabriel’s Oboe with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, the world premiere of John Joubert’s Oboe Concerto at the Lichfield Festival, and J S Bach’s Double Concerto for Oboe and Violin with Bradley Creswick and Northern Sinfonia and Nicola Benedetti and Ensemble 360.

Gregory Batsleer CONDUCTOR he has curated and conducted cross-art performances at Latitude Festival, Wilderness Festival, Southbank Centre, London Handel Festival and Royal Northern College of Music.

He has worked as an artistic advisor at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and on projects with leading contemporary artists including Elbow, Damon Albarn, David Lang, Carlos Acosta, Clean Bandit and Guy Garvey.

From 2012 to 2016 Gregory was Artistic Director of the National Portrait Gallery’s Choir in Residence Programme, the world’s first in-house music programme in a museum or gallery. Together with the Portrait Choir, he recorded an acclaimed Choral Audio Guide to the Gallery’s permanent collection.

Gregory is widely regarded as one of the most innovative conductors of his generation. His current posts include Chorus Director with both the RSNO and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Music Director of the Huddersfield Choral Society. He has received widespread acclaim for raising the artistic standards of all these ensembles, as well as continuing to renew the choral traditions of each organisation.

As Guest Conductor, recent highlights include performances with Royal Northern Sinfonia, The Hallé, Black Dyke Band, National Youth Choir of Great Britain, Orchestra of Opera North, Manchester Camerata, Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and Academy of Ancient Music.

Gregory is deeply committed to exploring new ways of presenting music and extending its reach beyond the concert hall. He is cofounder Artistic Director of Festival Voices, a professional ensemble dedicated to the performance of choral music reimagined with live electronic music. In recent seasons

Alongside his work as a performer, Gregory works in a number of strategic and advisory positions and sits on the boards of Manchester Camerata and the London Handel Festival.

His work as a choral director was recognised with the 2015 Arts Foundation’s first-ever Fellowship in Choral Conducting.

6 Mozart Oboe Concerto

Royal Scottish National Orchestra

Formed in 1891 as the Scottish Orchestra, the company became the Scottish National Orchestra in 1950, and was awarded Royal Patronage in 1977. The Orchestra’s artistic team is led by Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård, who was appointed RSNO Music Director in October 2018, having previously held the position of Principal Guest Conductor. Hong Kong-born conductor Elim Chan succeeds Søndergård as Principal Guest Conductor.

The RSNO performs across Scotland, including concerts in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen, Perth and Inverness. The Orchestra appears regularly at the Edinburgh International Festival and the BBC Proms, and has made recent tours to the USA, China and Europe.

The Orchestra is joined for choral performances by the RSNO Chorus, directed by Gregory Batsleer. The RSNO Chorus evolved from a choir formed in 1843 to sing the first full performance of Handel’s Messiah in Scotland. Today, the RSNO Chorus is one of the most distinguished large symphonic choruses in Britain. The Chorus has performed nearly every work in the standard choral repertoire, along with contemporary works by composers including John Adams, Howard Shore and James MacMillan.

Formed in 1978 by Jean Kidd, the acclaimed RSNO Junior Chorus, under its director Patrick

Barrett, also performs regularly alongside the Orchestra. Boasting a membership of over 400 members aged from 7 to 18, it has built up a considerable reputation singing under some of the world’s most distinguished conductors and appearing on radio and television.

The RSNO has a worldwide reputation for the quality of its recordings, receiving a 2020 Gramophone Classical Music Award for Chopin’s Piano Concertos (soloist: Benjamin Grosvenor), conducted by Elim Chan; two Diapason d’Or awards for Symphonic Music (Denève/Roussel 2007; Denève/Debussy 2012) and eight GRAMMY Awards nominations. Over 200 releases are available, including the complete symphonies of Sibelius (Gibson), Prokofiev (Järvi), Glazunov (Serebrier), Nielsen and Martinů (Thomson) and Roussel (Denève) and the major orchestra works of Debussy (Denève). Thomas Søndergård’s debut recording with the RSNO, of Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben, was released in 2019.

The RSNO’s pioneering learning and engagement programme, Music for Life, aims to engage the people of Scotland with music across key stages of life: Early Years, Nurseries and Schools, Teenagers and Students, Families, Accessing Lives, Working Lives and Retired and Later Life.

The team is committed to placing the Orchestra at the centre of Scottish communities via workshops and annual residencies.
