Highlights Thomas Søndergård: The Golden Age of Vienna Music Director Thomas Søndergård continues his Mahler cycle as we travel back in time to the inspiring golden age of Vienna. A unique cultural melting pot, Vienna in the 1900s was home to musicians, philosophers, poets, painters and scientists who created works of art and science that changed the course of history. Join us as we explore the extraordinary confluence of creativity and expressiveness that flowered in the Viennese enlightenment. Across three evenings, enjoy three of Gustav Mahler’s greatest works – Symphony No1 (Sat 5 Oct 2019), Das Lied von der Erde (Sat 7 Mar 2020) and Symphony No4 (Sat 9 May 2020) – paired with the colourful tone poems of Richard Strauss. Steven Osborne Artist in Residence

We’re delighted to welcome worldrenowned Scottish pianist Steven Osborne as our Artist in Residence this Season. Steven is no stranger to the RSNO and we can’t wait to hear his performances of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No27 (Sat 23 Nov 2019) and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No4 (Sat 25 Apr 2020). Steven will also perform a solo chamber recital of Beethoven Sonatas (Sun 8 Mar 2020) as part of the Beethoven Revolution series, and in November you can join Steven for his In Focus talk on the theme of what music means (Sun 24 Nov 2019).

In conversation with

Thomas Søndergård Could there be any greater thrill for a conductor than scaling the mountainous peaks of a Mahler symphony, squeezing the last drop of heated emotion out of a Rachmaninov concerto, or going face-to-face with the intellectual bombast of a Beethoven symphony?

Ask the conductor Thomas Søndergård and the answer may surprise you.

Among his favourite pastimes is an obsessive passion for swimming in the icy Scandinavian seas.

‘I love it. And I especially love to do it around winter time,’ says the 49-yearold Dane, who shares a house by the sea to the north of Copenhagen with his partner, Swedish baritone, Andreas Landin. ‘It does something extraordinary to the brain. The endorphins are released with the shock. The blood will go to the heart and protect it. It’s really gymnastics for the mind, and I do it any chance I get, no matter what the weather is like. It really clears the mind.’

Has he plunged into the waters around Scotland yet? ‘No, but I’d really like to find out if there are any such swimming clubs here.’ For now, just the sight of sea and mountains as he flies in and out of

Scotland is a comforting sight. ‘I’d have trouble living in the middle of the continent.’

With one fantastic first Season as Music Director of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra behind him, Søndergård is loving the less extreme total immersion that comes with being in the top job. ‘It’s very different from being Principal Guest Conductor, or just a regular guest,’ says the maestro who first worked with the Orchestra in 2009, serving as Principal Guest from 2011.

So it wasn’t like jumping in at the deep end when he launched last year’s inaugural Season as Music Director with a spectacular Mahler’s Fifth Symphony; more like that pivotal moment in a relationship when courtship turns to marriage, when growing mutual respect takes that consummating leap towards full-on commitment.

‘We’ve known each other so long, and I already knew there was a trust between us,’ Søndergård insists. ‘But it’s important not to take that trust for granted. I really feel with the RSNO that we see great possibilities together.’

Even at this early stage, he and the Orchestra have undertaken an international tour of China, to be followed in April 2019 by one to the USA. And when we spoke he was immersed in the final edits of a new CD on the Linn label of Richard Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben.

‘Touring is an important part of our job together,’ he believes. ‘Not only does it

show the world what we can do, but it raises the Orchestra to a high state of alert; it sharpens our focus.’ As for recording, that has such a critical role to play, he adds, in defining the here-andnow of an orchestra.

‘The players I’m working with are the RSNO right now. It’s not 30 years ago with Neeme Järvi. As great as those recordings are, and as great as those still to come will be, I want us to create something relevant for today’s RSNO audiences, the folk I meet out in the street. They want to have a recording of the musicians they see live on stage every week. Recordings are our personal calling card.’

Away from the concert spotlight Søndergård is a relaxed conversationalist, instantly at ease, exuding a modest affability and unpretentious honesty.

He’s a conductor, I suspect, who puts hard graft before ego, collegiate musicmaking before personal aggrandisement, yet inspiring utter perfection at every turn. RSNO players speak of rehearsals as ‘intense, exhausting, but hugely fulfilling’. ‘Yes, I never really let go in that sense,’ acknowledges Søndergård.

‘By the end of the day, I would really like them to feel they’ve been reminded why they wanted to be musicians in the first place.’

Such beliefs stem from his own playing days in the early 1990s as timpanist with the Royal Danish Orchestra. Already harbouring thoughts of conducting, he had quietly observed the tricks of the

trade. ‘It fascinated me to watch those conductors who allowed the orchestra’s voice to be heard. They were the ones who encouraged us to listen to ourselves and not to be too much in control. It’s a kind of stepping back, yet always being there to jump in when help is needed.’

As the Orchestra and its audiences anticipate a second Season under Søndergård’s intuitive lead, what is he looking forward to? The continuation of his ongoing Mahler cycle is top of the list.

‘As a young timpanist with the European Community Youth Orchestra I played a lot of these symphonies, but particularly remember the impact I felt doing Mahler Nine under Bernard Haitink. There is something overpowering about the gravity, the childhood naivety expressed within Mahler’s music that we should all try to see in ourselves.

‘As a conductor, I’m conscious not to programme it too often, but when I do, I prefer to do it with my regular orchestra as that’s where I find a special voice.

Mahler reflects how things can change so quickly in each of our lives. That’s where I am in mine,’ explains Søndergård, as he prepares to unveil this coming Season his personal views of the First and Fourth Symphonies and of Mahler’s symphonic 10 Season 2019:20

song cycle, Das Lied von der Erde, each of which he has programmed alongside one of Richard Strauss’ luminescent tone poems.

Does he feel the same about Beethoven, whose music comes later in the Season in recognition of the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth in 2020? Actually, he argues, there’s a strategic reason for any orchestra maintaining a regular link with Beethoven, or indeed any of the 18th/19th-century greats up to Schubert and Schumann. ‘It’s all about going back to basics. Revisiting Beethoven is like relearning the alphabet for an orchestra.

‘When I played in the Danish Opera orchestra, if we ever went a couple of seasons without Mozart, we begged for its return. After bingeing on the doughnuts and candy of Verdi or Wagner you really need slim, healthy vegetables!’

Now in complete charge of the RSNO, Søndergård’s concern for its health and wellbeing is paramount, even for those weeks he isn’t there. ‘A musical director has to show the way forward, so we’re constantly talking about the future, what kind of repertoire to plan, and above all, the kind of guests I’d love to see in front of the orchestra.’

The fact that three of the international stars appearing in the forthcoming Season – mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill (Berg’s Seven Early Songs), pianist Steven Osborne (now an RSNO Artist in Residence) and the ever-popular Nicola Benedetti (Bartók’s Violin Concerto No2) – happen to be Scottish is another symbol of national pride, insists Søndergård.

Cargill will sing Berg’s landmark Seven Early Songs in the opening concert, music from that hotbed of modernism, early 20th-century Vienna, a period in tune with yet another Søndergård obsession – contemporary art. ‘I love most art from that period, especially the Klimt-inspired expressionism of Egon Schiele,’ says Søndergård, who recently went all the way to Paris to see a Schiele exhibition, but was defeated by a queue that was ‘far too big’.

But he has plenty of artworks on display around his Copenhagen home, many of these by close friends who are painters or sculptors. ‘I collect, but actually I feel I want to share these with other people, maybe even find a way some day of exchanging art,’ he explains. ‘What’s great for me is to have something on the wall that not only has fascinating history, but a great story to tell.’

We should bear that in mind as Søndergård shares with us the ‘stories’ of the great musical masterworks.

First though, Thomas Søndergård takes in the mysterious atmosphere of Ireland’s Faery Hills before unleashing Shostakovich’s most irreverent symphony: music so entertaining that the Soviets banned it.

Thomas Søndergård and the RSNO will go straight for the emotional jugular, but not before they’re joined by our Artist in Residence Steven Osborne for something very different: the lovely final piano concerto by Tchaikovsky’s own favourite composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

No-one writes a melody quite like Tchaikovsky, and no-one makes an orchestra sound more thrilling. Tonight, conductor Teddy Abrams explores two sides of Russia’s most popular composer.

There’s the raw emotional drama and unbuttoned celebration of the Fourth Symphony. And then there’s the exuberant fireworks and endless melody of the Violin Concerto – performed by the phenomenal Rachel Barton Pine.

But first, we’ll be making history, with a world premiere by a young composer from our innovative Composers’ Hub.

Grieg’s phenomenally popular Piano Concerto sits at the heart of this Valentine’s concert, and we’re thrilled to welcome award-winning pianist Florian Mitrea to perform it especially for you.

But above all, he was a revolutionary – and when you hear his Seventh Symphony in full, headlong flight, you might feel like punching the air. Elim Chan kickstarts our ‘Beethoven Revolution’ series, while the astonishing young Dutch violinist Noa Wildschut takes the spotlight in Bruch’s lyrical Violin Concerto.

Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony begins with a controlled explosion: two centuries later, music is still reeling from the aftershock. And three decades after he recorded the Beethoven symphonies, the world of music is still dealing with Sir Roger Norrington’s revelatory approach to these incredible scores. So who better to play it than the charismatic composer and pianist Fazıl Say? His Grand Bazaar is a musical tour through the colours, fragrances and crowds of Istanbul. Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, meanwhile, is simply a masterpiece of uncompromising spiritual beauty from a true giant of 20th-century art.

Not every revolution is noisy. Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll is a tender cradle-song, written as a gift to the love of his life.

Beethoven never wrote anything more poetic than his Fourth Piano Concerto, just as he never wrote a sunnier – or funnier – symphony than his Fourth.

Steven Osborne returns on the piano, and the RSNO’s leader Sharon Roffman directs the whole concert from the violin, just as they would have done in Beethoven’s day.

Join them on a musical tour through the world of science, unlocking its knowledge and secrets, with live experiments on stage (think fizzing test tubes and flying bolts of electricity), alongside performances by the expert Royal Scottish National Orchestra and RSNO Junior Chorus. Featuring numbers such as Jurassic Park and Holst’s The Planets, this explosive concert puts big music under the microscope.

He’s having a (snow)ball in Winter Wonderland getting ready for the big day, but things are starting to go wrong…

Bohemian rhapsodies: conductor Jiří Rožeň comes from Prague and this lunchtime he’s brought some local delicacies to share. Martinů’s La Bagarre is a vivid musical picture of a cheering, bustling crowd. And Dvořák’s Fifth Symphony is a sunlit journey through the Czech countryside: folk dances, birdsong, and tune after glorious tune.

If you enjoy Dvořák’s symphony From the New World, you’re going to love the music that he wrote when he was happily at home.

Nicolai’s Overture to The Merry Wives of Windsor begins with the moon rising over Windsor Great Park. Brahms’ First Piano Quartet ends with the wildest and most unbridled of all gypsy dances – at least, in this flamboyant orchestral version. Although technically not a symphony, this symphonic masterpiece is the perfect soundbite for a light lunch.

From the air and water of his native Suffolk, Benjamin Britten crafted a musical Christmas celebration like no other. His Ceremony of Carols is a brighteyed welcome to the festive season performed by the young singers of our fantastic RSNO Junior Chorus. We are also delighted to welcome Glasgow Cambiata to the stage – the stars of our Armistice commemorations last year – for an afternoon of joyful singing.

Brahms poured his darkest feelings into his C minor Piano Quartet; the result is a musical tragedy as stirring as Shakespeare. Schumann went to the opposite extreme: he was in love, and his Piano Quartet practically boils over with happiness. And Gustav Mahler – well, let’s just say that he never holds back!

Ask Steven Osborne which music he’d choose above all others, and he replies, ‘Beethoven, for the enormous emotional range, the intellectual engagement, the earthiness, the humour, and the genius way of dealing with musical structure.’

So even though there’s practically nothing that this great Scottish pianist can’t play, the prospect of hearing him playing Beethoven’s last – and most transcendent – piano sonatas in one recital is little short of thrilling. Music from the edge, performed by a master.

Each player in the RSNO is a star in their own right, and the nice thing about chamber music is that it allows them to step out of the orchestra and really shine in the music they love best. For the RSNO’s Belarusian Principal Cello Aleksei Kiseliov, that means teaming up with pianist Alasdair Beatson in the ebullient Cello Sonata by the young Richard Strauss – the centrepiece of a recital programme which also features some of Beethoven’s magnificent Variations for Cello and Piano.

Featuring Maya Iwabuchi, Tom Dunn, Arthur Boutillier, Margarida Castro, Christopher Gough and David Hubbard Take Beethoven at his happiest, give him seven virtuoso musicians, throw in a couple of pop tunes and the result is irresistible. But if Beethoven’s Septet is pure musical sunshine, this fantastic miniature version of Richard Strauss’ Till Eulenspiegel is sheer knockabout farce – brilliantly played. For today’s RSNO players, it’s all as enjoyable to play as it is to listen to; there’s a reason why they call this ‘the music of friends’.

This exciting scheme offers emerging composers the chance to work with the RSNO over the course of a Season, learning what goes on behind the scenes of Scotland’s National Orchestra. In this public workshop, each composition will be rehearsed and discussed, with one piece selected for performance in the RSNO’s 2020:21 Season. Join us and witness musical history in the making.

RSNO Schools Concerts Appeal The RSNO is committed to bringing orchestral music of the highest quality to people of all ages and abilities through our ambitious programme RSNO Music for Life.

Our Schools Concerts are at the heart of Music for Life. These engaging and educational orchestral concerts for nursery and primary school-age children take place across Scotland in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee, with the latest addition to the series at the newly refurbished Music Hall in Aberdeen. With interactive elements to help pupils engage with the music, they are specially tailored to meet the needs of the children, which can include relaxed performances or a British Sign Language interpreter signing from the stage.

We run Continuous Professional Development (CPD) sessions for teachers, and resource packs are distributed to each school ahead of the concert performance.

We need your help to build this vital investment for the future and ensure that we bring great music to a new generation, regardless of their social or economic

circumstances. Your donation will make a real difference to young people across Scotland.
