We were delighted to have welcomed so many industry friends and colleagues to Rolling Stock Networking 2026. We are also pleased to report that RSN 2026 broke all previous records with more content, more visitors, more exhibitors and more smiles. The show attracted the great and good with new builders, the heavy maintainers, systems integrators, freight carriers and depot equipment suppliers all taking part in a great day of exhibiting and networking. It was heartwarming for the team to recieve so many kind words from exhibitors and visitors alike on the show day. We feel very enthusiastic as we begin the preparations for RSN 2027 which will be on the 8th of July at the same great venue. RSN 2026 featured a new floor plan increasing the number of spaces for exhibitors to 181. At the date of publishing the take up for RSN 2027 has been incredible as within weeks of the show we are around 80% sold. We are expecting to sell out in record time and are looking to expand the 2027 edition even further. We firmly believe that unlike any other show, RSN offers a community feel for the rail industry, where visitors and exhibitors are enthused by the buzz the event provides and the relaxed but efficient networking experience. RSN is the place where contacts are made, relationships are formed and business is done.

Whilst the show is organised by a small team, we recognise the contribution that our substantial show partners bring to the event. T

he 2026 staging of Rolling Stock Networking – RSN2026 – took place at Derby Arena and was hailed as a great success by exhibitors and visitors alike. Regular visitors will have noticed some changes from previous years. There were early signs of a busy day ahead as the main carpark was full half an hour before opening time. Fortunately for those travelling by road, parking marshals were on hand to guide visitors to free parking spaces in the overflow car park. Once inside the venue, those who had not pre-registered were quickly processed by the RSN reception team, while those who had printed their badges in advance could get straight in.

The event was opened by Rob Edgcumbe, Porterbrook’s Director of Maintenance Services. He wished everyone a successful day and also visited the Porterbrook stand at the show. The trademark mid-blue carpet gave an immediate welcome to over 2,000 attendees. There were more stands than ever for them to see, as a new floorplan, with additional aisles running from front to back, gave more room to move about while allowing 181 exhibitors to book stand space.

RSN is the UK’s leading marketplace for the rolling-stock industry and its supply chain. As such, exhibitors were showing a wide range of products and services, some large and some small. Smiling and welcoming faces were everywhere, inviting attendees to see new products, discuss new technology or to ask for advice on the challenges they face.

The test of stamina for standholders was to keep their energy levels up and to welcome visitors for the entire six hours of the show. “My cheeks were definitely tired from all the smiling and talking by the end of it!” exclaimed Rony Roy, Project Manager for Rail Consulting with Risktec Solutions, a TÜV Rheinland Group company.

One of the events’ most striking stands was also close by the entrance. A full-sized pantograph from a Blackpool tram took up most of the space on the Holbro stand. Technical Engineer Matt Walwyn explained that it is one of a number that Holbro maintains for various clients. The company’s Pantograph & Overhaul Division sits alongside its other activities – Rail Engineering, Laser Cutting & Fabrication and Onsite Paint Finishing.

Camlin Rail had a simple stand, but many questions were asked as the news had recently broken that the company has been acquired by Siemens – not Mobility but the Energy division. What would that mean going forward? It was really too soon to say.

Alfatronix representatives Claire Phillips and Gary Comolly took a stand at RSN to meet OEMs and show the company’s range of charging solutions for trains and public transport. Being a one-day show, they said that RSN gave them “a lot of value”, unlike many other events. Mike Brookes and Peter Addison spent the day enjoying discussions with customers about implementing Harting Technology Group connectivity into projects. At least they had comfortable shoes to help withstand being on their feet all day!

Everywhere visitors turned, there was something else to see. The largest windscreen wiper blades you can imagine? Try PSV Wipers. Seat covers? Camira Fabrics – who also do a nice line of shopping bags! Locking nuts? Staytite. Fire prevention? Warrington Fire. The show had it all.

Freight and International From its roots as an exhibition of suppliers into the rolling-stock maintenance and upgrade market, RSN has expanded its remit over the years. The freight industry is increasingly represented, both by exhibitors and by the number of visitors the show attracts from the sector. DB Cargo had a stand, and many others showed products or services that the freight market would find attractive. Visitors have also recognised the increasing interest in freight, with many wearing badges showing their affiliation to the sector. Also noticeable was the interest from international suppliers, both those with UK operations and those which export to the UK market. Aside from the aforementioned Westermo (Sweden), TÜV Rheinland and Harting (Germany), many others were in evidence.

Televic (Belgium) was showing its latest passenger information systems. Infodev (Canada) demonstrated passenger counting techniques and DC Airco (Netherlands) discussed air conditioning and HVAC systems – of particular interest in the (unexpected) heat of an English summer. Loram (USA), Windhoff (Germany), Mafelac (France), Icotek (Germany), Associated Rewinds (Ireland) and a number of other international names were much in evidence, with an international exhibitor in almost every aisle.

Talks and Discussions Global engineering services firm AtkinsRéalis had a larger stand than most. Throughout the day, various experts gave talks to interested visitors, who were wearing headphones so the talk didn’t disturb those on neighbouring stands. A presentation on ‘Recharging Rail – Battery Trains’, given by Technical Director Caspar Lucas, was typical of the talks presented and attracted a particularly good audience.

The three sessions, all moderated by Jo Etchells, Procurement Director at Enigma Seven, were spread through the day. This gave exhibition visitors plenty of time both to visit exhibitor stands and to take in one, two or even all three panels.

Freight The biggest news amongst freight operators is the split of Freightliner into two parts. Purchased by US operator Genesee & Wyoming in 2015, it was split off from G&W by its parent companies Brookfield and GIC in 2024. In 2025, the UK intermodal business was sold along with the ‘Freightliner’ brand in the UK to CMA CGM (Compagnie maritime d’affrètement - Compagnie générale maritime, a French shipping and logistics company founded in 1978). The UK bulk haulage business was retained by Brookfield Infrastructure Partners and GIC, renamed Heavy Haul Rail and relaunched on 29 January 2026. Heavy Haul Rail is now focused solely on the bulk freight market, moving 17 million tonnes of freight a year for customers in the industrial, energy and construction markets. Heavy Haul Rail also supports the renewal and maintenance of the rail infrastructure and supports passenger train operators and rolling stock companies, including the provision of drivers and route conducting services.

Freight: Continued As plans are made for the railway to reach its ‘net-zero’ goal for decarbonisation by 2050, attention continues to shift to freight, most of which (90 per cent) is moved by diesel-powered locomotives. A 2023 report by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport suggests that only 800 additional miles of electrification could allow 95 per cent of UK freight to be delivered using electric traction. Delivered at a rate of 40 miles per year for 20 years, at a cost of £100 million per annum, the 95 per cent target could be reached by the mid-2040s. Such a move will require the UK freight fleet to be predominately electric or hybrid locomotives. Currently, none of the four UK manufacturers have such locomotives in their range, though some make them in overseas markets.

GBRf’s Class 99 fleet, the first two of which arrived in the UK in June 2025, are manufactured by Stadler in Valencia, Spain. On the freight wagon front, British manufacturer WH Davis has received an order to replace Irish Rail’s existing engineering fleet, much of which has been in service for over half a century. 68 bespoke infrastructure maintenance wagons will be designed and manufactured at WH Davis’s facility in Shirebrook, Nottinghamshire. Engineered to meet modern and future operational requirements, the new vehicles will transport essential infrastructure materials including rails, sleepers and track panels. Deliveries will commence in 2027. Leasing company VTG Rail UK has delivered the first 18 JPA powder tank wagons to Breedon’s Hope Cement Works in Derbyshire. The new wagons entered service on 14 January 2026 and are the first newbuild iWagons in the UK. These wagons are part of a wider order for 62 new JPA wagons fitted with iWagon technology, placed by Breedon in November 2024.

Built by Feldbinder at its Wittenberg facility in Germany, the remaining 44 iWagons on order will be progressively introduced across Breedon’s core rail network routes in similar batches over the next 12 months. The new wagons will replace existing assets. The VTG iWagon, fitted with VTG Telematics and Knorr-Bremses’s FreightControl Sentinel system, is the UK’s first digital freight wagon, using sensors and wireless technology to monitor key components including brakes and wheels in real time. This selfpowered system controls wheel speed, prevents slides and enables remote monitoring of its condition, transmitting real-time data to improve maintenance and prevent potential freight train derailments.

So, with new trains, new wagons, and new technology, the outlook for the rolling-stock industry in the UK is relatively positive. There is still too much ‘boom and bust’, but at least this is now being recognised by government and, hopefully, addressed. Let’s see what we have to report in a year’s time, at RSN 2027.

Greg Kotecha is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and the Head of Engineering at South Western Railway (SWR), a position he has held for six and a half years. He has led the technical introduction of the Cl484 fleet on the Isle of Wight and the Cl701 fleet on SWR’s suburban network, as well as life extension work on the Cl455 fleet to enable continued service operation into 2026. Greg and his team have also re-written the entire suite of engineering policies and procedures, delivering improved supply chain oversight, stronger stakeholder engagement, and enhanced reliability and performance. He’s an active participant in cross-industry forums focused on best practice, including the RSSB Technical & Standards Forum, which he has chaired for the past year, and the Network Rail Chief Engineer’s Vehicle Introduction Forum. Claire Painter is Head of Procurement and Supply Chain at SWR. She is a long serving railway professional with a varied career spanning over 32 years, 13 of those in Procurement. The majority of her railway career has been spent with SWR, with a 4 1/2 year stint at First Rail as Senior Indirect Procurement Category Manager, with direct responsibility for group tenders such as Catering, Rail Replacement and Temporary Labour. She returned to SWR in Oct 2023 as Head of Procurement, and during SWR’s transfer to public ownership in May 2025 (SWR being the first TOC to transfer), she was responsible for overseeing the triage of c700 contracts for inclusion in the Rail Transfer Scheme.
