While another beautiful Cleveland summer winds down, and we welcome the cooler fall temperatures, we are keeping things hot at the Library!

We kick-off the season with our 2nd Annual Block Party Clambake on September 5th. Registration includes delicious food by River Dog Food Truck, great music, and familyfriendly entertainment. Our popular Chef’s Secrets series continues with favorite local chefs from Wild Flour Bakery and The Olive Scene. We are thrilled to announce author of The Great Believers, Rebecca Makkai on November 16. Ms. Makkai is the winner of the 2018 ALA Carnegie Medal for Fiction, and finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. Registration is required for this can’t-miss event.

We’ve been busy keeping our building up-to-date and beautiful. Several projects were completed over the summer, including the final phase of the public restroom renovation, repaving the parking lot, and caulking all exterior windows.

We began developing our new Strategic Plan this summer, which commenced with a public survey on the Library’s web-site. A community stakeholder’s event, a staff in-service day, and a Board of Trustees retreat have all been part of the process this busy summer. Thanks to all who took part in the survey and /or participated in the stakeholder’s event. We are so grateful for the many thoughtful and interesting comments from you: our valued patrons.

MEET AUTHOR REBECCA MAKKAI Saturday, November 16, 4:00 - 5:00 p.m., West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church Rebecca Makkai, author of three previously published works and of The Great Believers, winner of the 2018 ALA Carnegie Medal for Fiction, LA Times Book Prize, and Stonewall Award, finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. Ms. Makkai will talk about her research on the 1980s AIDS epidemic, friendship and deliverance in the face of loss, and the craft of writing.

PUZZLE SHARE Take a puzzle, leave a puzzle. We will provide a dedicated space in the Grand Reading Room for you to share puzzles with other puzzlers in the community. Please only contribute puzzles that are in good condition with all pieces.

WINTER READING BINGO RETURNS December-February Catch up on your ‘to-read’ list this winter and participate in our Winter Reading Bingo program. Stop by the Reference Desk and pick up a Bingo card. For every Bingo you get, (five in a row, diagonal or horizontal) you will earn a raffle ticket for one of our five book/gift card bundles. All winners will be drawn the first week in March.

NEW SERVICES ASSET DEVELOPMENT CLASSES The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants in Cleveland will be offering a variety of classes for recent immigrants, non-native speakers, and asylum seekers including an opportunity to participate in the Individual Development Account (IDA) Savings Program. Classes will be held starting November 16. Then join us on the following Tuesdays for Crafting with the Curator! Each month we will learn more about our museum’s collections and create a craft inspired by the piece.

A design that spawned dozens of imitators, this piece was one of the few that was patented by R. Guy Cowan in 1925. His dancer flower frogs (an object used in floral arrangement) were a fast success. Phyllis Gott (Arney), dance instructor to Cowan’s children, has been attributed as the model for this piece.

CONNECTING FOR KIDS SENSORY CONSULTS For families with children ages 18 months through 12 years of age Tuesday, October 8 , 6:30 - 8:00 p.m., Purple Room Connecting for Kids will provide free Sensory Consults in 15-minute time slots. While the children are encouraged to engage in various activities, families will meet with a pediatric occupational therapist, complete a sensory checklist and learn strategies to help their child at home.

ASSET DEVELOPMENT CLASSES The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants in Cleveland will be offering a variety of classes beginning in November for recent immigrants, non-native speakers, and asylum seekers. Mission Statement Rocky River Public Library – an informational, educational, recreational, and cultural resource – is committed to: • Preserving its unique atmosphere and personal service; • Adapting quickly and efficiently to anticipate and meet community needs; • And promoting freedom of information to all.

Rocky River Public Library is an independent library and is not part of any larger library system. It is supported by the residents of Rocky River and by a portion of the General Fund of the State of Ohio. The Library’s taxing authority comes only through the Rocky River Board of Education which, at the request of the Library, places periodic ballot issues before the public.

RRPL has a seven-member Board of Trustees, consisting of community members, which is the governing body authorized by the State of Ohio to establish policies and develop an annual budget. All Board and committee meetings are open to the public.
