fter a long cold winter, I’m really looking forward to warm weather and all the wonderful things summer brings: baseball, picnics, and summer reading programs at the Library. Our theme for summer reading this year is "Library’s Rock", and indeed RRPL Rocks! We have so many informative and entertaining programs awaiting you this summer. Please take a moment to browse through the pages of this edition of Inside View, I guarantee you’ll find something to pique your interest.

Celebrating 90 Years!

Over the years Rocky River Public Library has evolved from a quiet gathering place to a vibrant learning center. No matter the changes taking place, staff, administrators, support groups and trustees remain dedicated to a tradition of excellence.

In the words of Miss Wilder, the library’s first Director, “For a little library we do a lot!”

1928

Rocky River Public Library is dedicated, the original cornerstone placed on November 24. It's first librarian/director is Miss Katherine E. Wilder.

1967

The Library’s first Director, Miss Wilder, retires. Her successor is George W. Scherma.

The collection has grown to 40,000 books with a circulation of 145,000. The staff has gone from two to eighteen.

1978

Our Golden Jubilee is celebrated. The Cowan Pottery Museum is established from the generous bequest of Maude W. Michael.

1985

George Scherma retires as Director. The staff has grown to 30 full- and part-time employees. Circulation is 236,277 and the library owns 88,703 books and audiovisual materials. Michael G. Garrison is chosen as successor.

1991

The paper card catalog is replaced with a computer catalog. Word processors are available for the public. Cowan Pottery Museum hosts the first Annual Cowan Pottery Symposium.

2003

2003 Library mascot Roc E. Rover is introduced. Residents pass an operating levy and funding for expansive interior renovations.

2009

Rocky River Public Library Foundation provides funding to purchase a new vehicle for Outreach Services deliveries.

2014 -2015

Jamie L. Mason is appointed Director. Inside View wins American Library Association’s PR Xchange award for best newsletter. The building’s original 1928 clay tile roof is restored.

2017

The Library joins CLEVNET, expanding access to materials by over 10 million items and "chooses kind" by selecting Wonder by R.J. Palacio as a city-wide Community Read.

Today

Celebrating 90 years, Rocky River Public Library has grown to a staff of 76 full-and part-time employees with a circulation of 737,625 from physical collection of 152,737 items. The library is enjoying another chance to collaborate with other public libraries in Cuyahoga County in supporting the “One Community Reads: Evicted by Matthew Desmond” initiative and continues to act as a community destination for information and inspiration.

We look forward to spending the next 90 years with you!

Cowan Pottery Museum Meet Me in the Alcove Cowan Pottery Museum now offers walk-in public tours every month. Meet Curator Lauren Hansgen in the Cowan Alcove on the First Floor for a 20 minute mini-tour highlighting selections from the permanent collection and sharing interesting Cowan facts. Tours are offered on the first Wednesday of the month at 12:00 p.m. and the third Thursday of the month at 5:00 p.m. Be sure to follow RRPL on Facebook for reminders! These tours are free and open to the public, and no registration is required. The Curator also offers private tours for individuals and small groups. Contact Lauren directly at 440-895-3763 if you are interested in scheduling a private tour.

28 th Annual Cowan Pottery Symposium Saturday, May 5, 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

The Symposium is an ideal opportunity for those who are interested in Cowan Pottery, local history, antiques, collecting, and the arts in general to network with likeminded people. The day includes speakers, meals, scholarship presentation, and a raffle. Cost for the Symposium is only $22 and registration is still open! An offsite dinner is also available for an additional charge. Children’s Programs SUMMER READING PROGRAM Join our Summer Reading Program “Libraries Rock!” and earn prizes for reading and sharing your book adventures with us. Program runs Monday, June 11 through Saturday, July 28.

Our Summer Reading Kick-off is Monday, June 11 from 2:00-4:00 p.m., on the Library front lawn. We’ll be rockin’ and rollin’ with musician and entertainer Tom Sieling starting at 2:30 p.m. Be sure to sign up for our Summer Reading Program and kids will receive a cool bag of goodies. Our End of Summer Reading Party is Saturday, July 28 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. on the Library front lawn. Come celebrate the joys of summer with music, crafts and a sweet treat.

Can you solve the riddles and crack the codes needed to unlock her emergency kit and save the day? Kids will work together to beat the clock and complete the challenge for a special prize.

Magic of Bubbles

Tuesday, July 10, 2:00-2:45 or 7:00-7:45 p.m., Auditorium The Bubble Lady will create bubbles of all shapes and sizes by using a variety of common objects. Her grand finale is a massive cylindrical bubble so large a child can stand inside!

Jungle Terry Animal Show Tuesday, July 17, 2:00-2:45 or 7:00-7:45 p.m., Auditorium Come to the Library this summer for a wild and wonderful animal show.

If so, then Going Graphic is a book club for you! We will read El Deafo by Cece Bell. A copy of the book for each club member will be available for pick up in the Children's Department at time of registration.

Middle School Book Club Book Club for students completing grades 5-8 Thursday, July 12, 6:00-7:00 p.m., Community Room Fantasy and science fiction fans won’t want to miss this exciting dystopian book discussion. As part of the Community Read of The List we will be Skyping live with the author Patricia Forde and discussing the hot topics that are brought up in her book such as censorship with other community read participants. friends RRPL

Reading Partner Volunteers For students in grades 4-6 during the 2017/2018 school year Tuesdays, June 19, 26, July 10 & 17, 4:00-4:30 p.m., Purple Room Thursdays, June 21, 28, July 12 & 19, 4:00-4:30 p.m., Purple Room Become a volunteer and help younger students practice reading! Priority registration will be given to volunteers who can commit to 4 weeks. Volunteers will be contacted to confirm availability.

Stuffed Animal Sleepover Counselors For students completing grades 4-6 Wednesdays, June 13 or July 18, 6:45-8:00 p.m., Auditorium The Library needs summer counselors to help host a stuffed animal sleepover!

Tween volunteers will assist children’s staff with creating photo keepsakes showing all the fun the stuffed animals had at the Library during their sleepover.
