CELEBR ATING YEARS 1928 - 2018 Community • Education Entertainment • Literacy ( See page 6 for details )

Your destination for information and inspiration!

Director's Message “A library in the middle of a community is a cross between an emergency exit, a life-raft and a festival. They are cathedrals of the mind; hospitals of the soul; theme parks of the imagination. On a cold rainy island, they are the only sheltered public spaces where you are not a consumer, but a citizen instead” -Caitlin Moran

T

his November we will commemorate a historic milestone in our Library’s history. For 90 years we have enriched the lives of generations of Rocky River families by providing information and inspiration, and it is my privilege to serve as Director as we head into the future. What started as a small-town “public rental library” with 345 books, has grown into an energetic learning and community hub with around 300,000 physical and digital materials for patrons to borrow. This is in addition to the over 9 million items available through the CLEVNET consortium. Over the years, library services have grown and changed tremendously - from massive wooden card catalogs to a phone app which places the Library at your fingertips. No matter how many changes take place, our staff, support groups, and trustees of Rocky River Public Library remain dedicated to continuing a tradition of excellence.

Over the summer we completed several building improvement projects such as new carpeting in the Children’s Department, and new Promethean smart boards for the Children’s Story Time rooms. We also upgraded the technology in the Computer Training Center. Restroom renovations, with major financial assistance from the Rocky River Public Library Foundation, are set to begin on the first and second floors in the coming winter months. This will be a large project, and I ask in advance for your patience as we continue to make upgrades to this beautiful building.

Please join me on November 17th for a day of entertainment, activities, memories, prizes, and of course, cake! Activities for the whole family include live musical performances, crafts, a library-wide scavenger hunt, and an interactive photo booth. It is sure to be an exciting day!

Jamie L. Mason

I hope you will join us on November 17th as we honor the past, celebrate the present, and look ahead to the future of Rocky River Public Library. The next 90 years are sure to be an exciting journey!

Director

News from the Museum -- Currently on View

Cowan Pottery produced nineteen designs for bookends. With the exception of a pair of "cogwheel” or “gear” bookends by A. Drexler Jacobson, all the designs are figural and overwhelmingly feature animals: horses, goats, dogs, elephants, camels, pelicans, polar bears, and even unicorns. The list includes a pair of “pouter pigeons” seen here in October glaze. These bookends were created by Elmer Novotny and mark his singular contribution to Cowan Pottery. Novotny was a student at the Cleveland Institute of Art when he created these in 1928. They captured Guy Cowan’s attention, but he was hesitant to put student work into production, believing he could best serve students by hiring them on full-time upon graduation. Novotny, however, was a painting major and was not looking to pursue a career in ceramics. So instead, Cowan purchased his design for $50.

RRPL has a seven-member Board of Trustees, consisting of community members, which is the governing body authorized by the State of Ohio to establish policies and develop an annual budget. All Board and committee meetings are open to the public.

Rocky River Public Library is an independent library and is not part of any larger library system. It is supported by the residents of Rocky River and by a portion of the General Fund of the State of Ohio. The Library’s taxing authority comes only through the Rocky River Board of Education which, at the request of the Library, places periodic ballot issues before the public.

Mission Statement Rocky River Public Library – an informational, educational, recreational, and cultural resource – is committed to: • Preserving its unique atmosphere and personal service; • Adapting quickly and efficiently to anticipate and meet community needs; • And promoting freedom of information to all.
