ChildHelp brings a voice to children who have been unheard and light to the darkness of an ugly issue. It is with trememdous joy that I welcome each of you to the Childhelp Wings’ “Fashion through the Ages” Luncheon. And…it is with great pride that I share with the Mothers, their daughters and their sons, as they come together to reach out to those less fortunate than they in an effort to make a difference in the lives of the children we serve at Childhelp.

I am honored to welcome our Emcee, Raven Symone, actress, singer, comedian, dancer, television producer, and fashion model, to our event this year. Thank you for offering your time to give hope to the precious children we serve at Childhelp.

It is my distinct privilege to honor and thank our three Fashion Show Luncheon Chairs, Jinger Richardson, Ashley Richardson and Janell Grady, our Childhelp Wings’ Past President and Board Advisor, Celeste Hopkins. Without your incredible diligence and attention to detail, we wouldn’t be here to celebrate the success of this beautiful luncheon. Special thanks to our Wings’ President, Betsy Coffeen, our Childhelp Wings’ Board and Membership team for all their support and effort to help bring this event to fruition. Congratulations to the special Heart of an Angel Award recipient, Veronica Nazzaro Penzone. Growing up in a loving home, it is unfathomable to me the horrors many children face in what should be their place of love and safety. It has been truly an honor to serve as

President this year and an honor to have you here with us today. It is because of people like you, who care, that we are able to make a difference in the lives of children we serve.

Founders’Message: Childhelp Wings Fashion Show

Fashion through the Ages

To celebrate the Childhelp Wings “Fashion through the Ages” luncheon, we went through old albums to offer our favorite fashion tips and tricks! We think a few of these outfits might even enchant fabulous clothing connoisseur and show curator Robert Black and always hip and happening emcee RavenSymoné. We hope the hairstyles meet with the approval of Childhelp Heart of an Angel awardee and super-stylist Veronica Nazzaro-Penzone. She has given endless hours of her time coifing the recovering children in our care, so we know that each of her elaborate updos is created with love. To see the most modern ways style and substance intersect, look no further than our gorgeous event chair, Jinger Richardson, and spectacular co-chairs Janell Grady and Ashley Richardson. The first rule of fashion is: What you wear is never as important as what you do. Giving is glamorous!

The Fabulous 50’s! These polka dot sun dresses marked the end of an era. From film and television to philanthropy and founding our organization, styles certainly changed. We found the full-skirted coats of the time perfect for smuggling orphans to safety and popular angora sweaters were great for snuggling with children in crisis. Once it was clear that our mission to rescue needy boys and girls would supersede our acting careers, we traded kitten heals for more sensible shoes to begin our journey.

The Swinging 60’s had us swinging into action to establish four orphanages in Japan, five in Vietnam as well as a hospital and school. Crisp, well-tailored suits were perfect for meeting with military commanders to coordinate charitable overseas ventures. Here we model the popular nautical look! The occasional chiffon shift was a quick option for fundraising events and chic, no-nonsense cuts of the day were easy outfits for girls on the go.

The wild prints and polyester of the 70’s may be memories some of us would prefer to leave behind but we found the decade’s wrinkle-free separates to be great for such lifesaving events as the emergency evacuation of orphans from war-torn Vietnam during Operation Babylift. Whatever they may say about wearing white after Labor Day, we paired these fetching floppy hats so en vogue at the time with bright white pant suits for the opening of the Childhelp Merv Griffen Village in Beaumont, California. This residential treatment village exclusively for abused and neglected children was the first of its kind. See what trendsetters we were!

Who could forget the football-caliber shoulder pads of the 80’s? Oprah Winfrey, Barbara Mandrel and Faith Hill model the savvy business suits that defined the day. Omnipresent patterned scarves came in handy to mop our brows as we worked to launch the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline and our countrywide mission to eradicate child abuse and neglect. Clearly we had a lot of responsibilities to shoulder (good thing for those massive shoulder pads!) As Childhelp grew with the opening of the Childhelp Alice C. Tyler Village in VA and Childhelp Children’s Advocacy Center in AZ, we were honored to receive recognition as it brought muchneeded attention to the cause. Here we opt for the conservative, clean, monochromatic looks of the 90’s as we receive the National Charity Award from President George H.W. Bush. We must say that we missed the “grunge” trend, but if you saw us painting one of our centers in old sweatshirts, rags on our heads and spackle-splattered pants, we may have seemed as grungy as one can get!

Today, Childhelp has become such a multifaceted network of hope and healing that, when it comes to our tastes, anything goes! We incorporate classics from yesteryear with current looks to create a style that is all our own. When we travel around town in matching attire, we are often asked, “Are you sisters? Where are you from?” These twin sets seem to be quite the attention-getter and allow us to flaunt our favorite topic: stories telling the tale of Childhelp, sharing who make this about the wonderful people organization special (like YOU!) and championing the children we love.

2014 Celebrity Emcee: Raven-Symoné

Actress, producer, Raven-Symoné is one of Hollywood’s most powerful and talented young stars. Most recently, Raven sold a new TV show to ABC family along with Emmy Award winning producer Yvette Lee Bowser and is starring in the new comedy series, “State of Georgia.” In the show Raven plays the 10/17/13 to 4:45 PM character “Georgia” who is a performer from the south who is trying make a name for herself in New York City. The series premiered June 2011. Best known for her role in the Emmy nominated comedy series “That’s So Raven” for the Disney Channel. Her role as ‘Raven’ garnered three NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Performance in a Youth/Children’s Series/Special, two Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards for Favorite Television Actress and a Young Artist Award for “Outstanding Young Performer.
