In April 1972 I bought a 5 x 4 inch Gandolfi plate camera and started taking photographs. The portraits were taken between 1972 and 1983 in and around Stourbridge in the West Midlands, within walking distance of where I lived.

There was no plan to the kind of people that I photographed; they were people that I knew, or people I met in the daily round.

Most of the photographs were taken on the 5 x 4 inch Gandolfi plate camera, the square format photographs were taken with a Mamiya C 220. The photographs were all cropped ‘in camera’.
