Dear Friends, It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to our beloved campus this evening as we honor outstanding student scholarship and partnerships, propelling Rensselaer through a transformative third century and providing our students with a world-class education.

Our capital campaign, Transformative: Campaign for Global Change inspires students, faculty, and alumni and alumnae to find solutions to the challenges of the 21st century through transformative research, innovative pedagogy and creative concepts.

It is the generous philanthropic support of each of you and all the honorees we will recognize this evening that makes all this possible. With your gifts, Rensselaer is able to continue to provide unparalleled education to our students, preparing them for a future of leadership, innovative thinking and becoming pioneers of change in our world.

I encourage each of you to get to know the outstanding student scholars present here tonight.

They reflect the exceptional student body at Rensselaer and are the reason behind our purpose for coming together tonight as we celebrate the scholarships that our generous donors have provided for them, to be able to attend our world-class institution.

Just one year ago, we gathered in New York City for a historical performance by the Rensselaer Orchestra in the iconic Carnegie Hall. Tonight, we again highlight the arts with a signature performance by singer, songwriter and actor, Josh Groban. Rensselaer is proud to partner with the Find Your Light Foundation this evening to provide students of all ages the opportunity to receive a quality education.

THE HONORABLE SHIRLEY ANN JACKSON, PH.D. The Honorable Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D. is the 18th president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the oldest technological research university in the United States, where she has led an extraordinary transformation since 1999. Described by Time Magazine as “perhaps the ultimate role model for women in science,” Dr. Jackson has held senior leadership positions in academia, government, industry, and research. A theoretical physicist, Dr. Jackson holds an S.B. in Physics, and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Elementary Particle Physics, both from MIT. In September 2014, United States President Barack Obama appointed Dr. Jackson as Co-Chair of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board, where she served until January 2017. Dr. Jackson also served on the U.S. Secretary of State International Security Advisory Board from 2011 to 2017, and the U.S. Secretary of Energy Advisory Board from 2013 to 2017. From 2009 to 2014, Dr. Jackson served on the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), and, as part of PCAST, was Co-Chair of the President’s Innovation and Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC).

Before taking the helm at Rensselaer, Dr. Jackson was Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), from 1995 to 1999. At the NRC, Dr. Jackson conceived and promulgated risk-informed, performancebased regulation and created a new planning, budgeting, and performance management process (PBPM). During her tenure at the NRC, Dr. Jackson spearheaded the formation of the International Nuclear Regulators Association (INRA), and served as its Chairman from 1997 to 1999.

She currently serves on the boards of major corporations that include FedEx and IBM. She is a former member of the board of the World Economic Forum USA (WEF USA), Medtronic, the New York Stock Exchange, Key Corp, AT&T, Marathon Oil, U.S. Steel, and Sealed Air Corporation.

Dr. Jackson is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, the American Philosophical Society, and the Council on Foreign Relations. She is an international fellow of the British Royal Academy of Engineering, and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Physical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, of which she also served as past president. She holds 55 honorary doctoral degrees.

In 2018, Dr. Jackson was awarded the W.E.B. Du Bois medal from the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University. The medal honors those who have made significant contributions to African and African American history and culture, and more broadly, individuals who advocate for intercultural understanding and human rights in an increasingly global and interconnected world.

In 2007, describing her as “a national treasure,” the National Science Board selected Dr. Jackson as the recipient of The Vannevar Bush Award for “a lifetime of achievements in scientific research, education, and senior statesman-like contributions to public policy.”

In 2016, United States President Barack Obama awarded Dr. Jackson the National Medal of Science, the nation’s highest honor in science and engineering.

Dr. Jackson is a Life Member of the MIT Corporation, and a former Vice-Chair of the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution. In October 2017, she was named Regent Emerita of the Smithsonian Institution.

JOHN D. BENNETT ’74, MD, FACC, FACP PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF CAPITAL DISTRICT PHYSICIANS’ HEALTH PLAN, INC. 2019 COAST TO COAST EAST EVENT CHAIR John D. Bennett ’74, MD, FACC, FACP was named president and CEO of CDPHP in July of 2008 after serving more than 10 years as chair, vice chair, and board member of the Capital Region’s leading not-forprofit health plan. During this time, CDPHP has been recognized as one of the top-rated plans in the nation, has been named one of the Best Companies to Work for in New York for 11 consecutive years, and has ranked “Highest in Member Satisfaction among Commercial Health Plans in New York” in the J.D. Power Member Health Plan Study for the second consecutive year.

Prior to joining CDPHP, Dr. Bennett served as founding member and CEO of Prime Care Physicians, PLLC. During his tenure, he co-led a team of 25 cardiologists and helped grow the practice from three employees to a 100-physician multi-specialty group.

Dr. Bennett is board certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Internal Medicine, with subspecialties in internal medicine and cardiology. He earned his medical degree at SUNYDownstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, and a Bachelor of Science degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Dr. Bennett completed an internship and residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Albany Medical Center. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Bennett serves on the boards of the Alliance of Community Health Plans (ACHP), America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), Center for Economic Growth, New York eHealth Collaborative (NYeC), Palace Theatre, and The Sage Colleges. In 2015, Dr. Bennett was appointed by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to serve as a member of the New York Public Health and Health Planning Council.

An outspoken critic of the rising cost of health care, Dr. Bennett was awarded the 2016 Marketer/Communicator of the Year award by the Capital Region chapters of the American Marketing Association and Public Relations Society of America. That same year, Dr. Bennett was also awarded the 2016 Promoting the Advancement of Technology in Healthcare (PATH) Award from the New York e-Health Collaborative (NYeC).

CDPHP’s partnership with Rensselaer also extends to pioneering research. Led by Kristin Bennett, Ph.D., associate director of the Institute for Data Exploration and Applications (IDEA) and professor of mathematics, and joined by Malik Magdon-Ismail, Ph.D., professor of

computer science, Jason Kuruzovich, Ph.D., associate professor of management, and Tanvir Khan, CDPHP’s senior vice president and chief analytics officer, the team is using artificial intelligence to understand the best approaches to identify at-risk patients, and develop strategies that will improve their health.

Standard machine-learning and deep-learning models can predict which patients may require extensive care in the future, but cannot explain why or offer remedies. Using a “cadre” modeling technique developed by Professor Bennett, the team is able to develop explainable models that distinguish not only who the high-needs patients are but also why some people in the category respond well to treatments while others do not. The findings will offer physicians an explanation for why certain patients may continue to face health challenges and point to interventions and services that will improve their health.

In addition to being partners in health and research, Rensselaer is grateful for CDPHP’s generous support of student scholarships, and the leadership of its president and chief executive officer, Dr. John D. Bennett ’74, for helping to make the Rensselaer 20th Anniversary Celebration Weekend a success.

PRESIDENTIAL LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD HONOREE CORNING INCORPORATED Corning Incorporated’s relationship with Rensselaer spans more than 40 years. Tonight, we are honored to present Corning with a Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for its longstanding research partnerships, and its exceptional dedication to Rensselaer students, the student experience, and its graduates.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS Corning’s partnership with the Center for Materials, Devices, and Integrated Systems (cMDIS) and collaboration with leading Rensselaer faculty researchers have advanced our understanding of and ability to control the compositional structure and thermodynamics of glass at various stages of development. Such research is driving the creation of glass that is both stronger and more flexible for a world-changing array of applications, from light-refracting optical glass to optical fibers and glass polarizers for telecommunications and aerospace, to consumer electronics displays for cell phones, tablets, and televisions.

Through its partnership with the Center for Computational Innovations (CCI) and with the expertise of Rensselaer faculty in fluid dynamics, high-performance computing, and advanced software solutions, Corning is working to define accelerated simulation-based engineering systems to improve future materials and products while reducing energy and raw material usage, decreasing costs, and enhancing environmental sustainability.

As a member of the Industrial Affiliates Program, Corning also participates in research within the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering (MANE), and, in collaboration with Professor John Wen, the Department of Electrical, Computers, and Systems Engineering (ECSE).

Corning also has been a longtime supporter of undergraduate research at Rensselaer through its Corning Undergraduate Scholars Program, where students nominated by Rensselaer faculty and chosen by Corning receive underwriting to cover the costs of their respective research endeavors. This engagement allows Rensselaer students to connect directly with industry mentors to aid them in a year-long sponsored research program. The experience culminates with a visit to the Corning Global Research Center where students present their work, meet with Rensselaer alumni who are current Corning employees, and learn about some of the company’s extraordinary research capabilities.

Since 2015, in partnership with the O.T. Swanson Multidisciplinary Design Laboratory, Corning has supported the development of more than 100 engineering students in their senior capstone design projects, from advanced wireless networks and optical spool management to gesture recognition and big data warehouse management.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT Materials Science and Engineering professors Liping Huang and Yunfeng Shi were the inaugural recipients of the 2015 Gordon S. Fulcher Distinguished Scholar award, which was created by Corning to build a pipeline of qualified researchers for the U.S. glass industry.

Both were invited to participate in a six-month-long research stint at Corning’s Sullivan Park Research and Development facility.

FELLOWSHIP AND SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT Corning has cultivated deep relationships with materials science and engineering faculty, including Professor Minoru Tomozawa, one of the most distinguished academic glass scientists in the nation. Two of Professor Tomozawa’s recent graduate students, Peter Lezzi ’11, ’15 Ph.D. and Emily Marie Aaldenberg ’15, ’19 Ph.D., were awarded the Corning Graduate Fellowship.

In addition, Yanming Zhang, Fourth-Year Ph.D. Candidate, received the Corning Glass Age Scholarship for 2019-2020. The scholarship will support Yanming’s research with Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) professor Yunfeng Shi and Corning scientists.

Corning has been a generous supporter of Bridging the Gap, a key pillar of Transformative: Campaign for Global Change, which provides scholarships to deserving students who might not otherwise be able to afford a Rensselaer education.

CHAMPIONING THE ARCH Corning also was an early supporter of Rensselaer’s pilot program for The Arch, enabling students Clara Johnson ’20, Claudia Laukien ’20, and Patrick Gloria

’20 to spend their semester away working on new innovative products at Corning. Corning’s support for The Arch, now in place for all rising juniors, continues.

GRADUATE RECRUITMENT Corning has been recruiting talented Rensselaer graduates for decades. More than 150 Rensselaer alumni and alumnae are currently employed by Corning, including John Bayne ’90G, Tom Capek ’86, P’20, Linda Gaskill ’81G, Timothy Gross ’08 Ph.D., Michael Kunigonis Jr. ’94, Matthew Trosa ’12, and Jiaxiang Zhang ’10G, ’13 Ph.D. ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT Proud of their alma mater and the world-class company for which they work, Rensselaer alumni and alumnae at Corning enthusiastically welcomed the opportunity to become inaugural members of the recently launched Rensselaer Corporate Affinity Program. A symbol of unwavering leadership, this Eric Hilton design “captures the powerful beam cast out into the storm by the lighthouse, which towers above frothing waves,” embodying the essence of Dr. Jackson’s steadfast guidance into Rensselaer’s third century.

CORNING INCORPORATED LEADERSHIP THOMAS G. CAPEK ’86, P’20 SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF ENGINEER MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING CORNING INCORPORATED Thomas G. Capek is senior vice president and Corning’s chief engineer. Mr. Capek is responsible for leading the corporate Manufacturing Technology and Engineering organization and for leading the engineering function globally for the company.

Mr. Capek joined the Corporate Engineering function in Corning, New York as a design engineer in 1986, where he worked on numerous glass melting process projects.

He relocated to the Harrodsburg, Kentucky plant in 1989 as a member of the first joint development program with Samsung Corning Precision in the position of melting engineer. In 1990, he moved into the plant operations group as melting department head and was appointed production department head in 1994.

While at the Harrodsburg plant, Mr. Capek entered the division engineering group as melting technology manager where he was responsible for many melting process fundamental improvements. He was appointed

to the position of Harrodsburg plant operations manager in 1999, and plant manager in 2000 where he helped transform the plant to be a fully dedicated flat glass melting and forming facility.

Mr. Capek relocated to Corning, New York in 2003 as division engineering manager for Display Technologies and, in 2004, was named director Division Engineering.

In 2010, Mr. Capek was appointed division vice president and director, Engineering for the glass technology group, and in May 2014, moved into the position of vice president and chief engineer, Manufacturing Technology and Engineering. He was appointed senior vice president and chief engineer in November 2018.

Mr. Capek holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a bachelor’s degree in physics from the State University of New York at Oneonta. He works closely with many engineering schools to assure a strong pipeline of engineering talent for Corning.

JEFFREY EVENSON, PH.D. EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & CHIEF STRATEGY OFFICER CORNING INCORPORATED Jeff Evenson was appointed executive vice president in 2018 and has served as chief strategy officer since 2015.

In this role, Dr. Evenson oversees corporate strategy, corporate communications, and advanced analytics. Dr. Evenson joined Corning in 2011 as senior vice president and operations chief of staff and was responsible for leading the process to create Corning’s annual operating priorities and overseeing a variety of strategic programs and growth initiatives across the company’s diverse businesses. Previously, he spent seven years at Sanford C. Bernstein as a senior vice president and senior analyst focused on data networking companies. Earlier in

his career, Dr. Evenson was a partner at McKinsey & Company, where he led technology and market assessments for early-stage technologies.

Dr. Evenson has a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University, where he was a National Science Foundation Fellow, and a bachelor’s degree in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is Chairman of the Corning Museum of Glass, a trustee of the Corning Foundation, and a member of the board of directors for Arnot Health, Inc.

PRESIDENTIAL LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD HONOREE JOSH GROBAN AND THE FIND YOUR LIGHT FOUNDATION Grammy, Tony, and Emmy Award-nominated singer, songwriter, and actor Josh Groban has sold over 35 million multi-platinum albums worldwide. He has toured the globe performing electrifying live performances for thousands of adoring fans. He played a starring role in the 2017 Broadway musical Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812, has appeared in numerous television shows and feature films, and, last June, performed at the 73rd Annual Tony Awards.

At an early age, Josh Groban found his light and, for more than a decade, has been committed to helping others find theirs. Mr. Groban spent his early childhood and formative years exposed to a wide variety of music and the arts. Mr. Groban’s mother worked as an art teacher; his father a businessman and an accomplished pianist able to play by ear. Both parents instilled in their children, Josh and younger brother, Christopher, a love of art, theater, and music.

In addition to the influence of his parents, Mr. Groban considers himself lucky to have attended public elementary and secondary schools that offered music and arts education. During two high school year summers, Mr. Groban had the opportunity to attend arts camp at the historic Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan, about which he spoke in a recent interview.

“I am a product of public arts education, and I am a product of amazing institutions like Interlochen Arts Camp. I experienced firsthand how life-changing it can be to be surrounded by kids who all have the same passion and vision for the arts. It was something that I desperately

needed at that age. I was a kid who was struggling in other areas. I was very shy. I hadn’t made a lot of friends at that point, and my grades weren’t great.

Coming to a program where I was able to be around other kids and to be a part of the arts—and to be able to express myself for the first time—was exactly what I needed.”

Seeing overall arts education programs cut in half over the past 20 years, and virtually decimated in low-income communities where the academic benefits of arts education are the greatest, the Groban Family launched The Find Your Light Foundation. The Find Your Light Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that each child has the opportunity to experience a quality arts education, and believes that is best achieved through direct support of exceptional arts programs combined with education, advocacy, and outreach.

Since the Find Your Light Foundation’s founding in 2011, it has supported over 200 arts education programs in underserved communities across the country. Tonight we are honored to recognize and celebrate the personal and philanthropic achievements of Josh Groban and The Find Your Light Foundation, and a profoundly important partnership in arts education.

within the Lally School of Management. Additionally, they established the Wellfleet Constellation in Future Chips Research, and, most recently, the Severino Scholars Program.

Mr. Severino, who received a B.S.E.E. degree in 1969, is counted among the most successful Rensselaer graduates. Entering Rensselaer in his junior year, as a transfer student, Mr. Severino has commented that the intense technical education he received made him a successful engineer, and gave him the confidence to start his own business. It was at one of his early Ethernet companies that he met his wife, Kathleen, who shared his entrepreneurial spirit. They married three years later.

The Severinos’ contributions to the university extend well beyond their personal philanthropy. Their leadership was central to the success of our previous $1 billion capital campaign, Renaissance at Rensselaer. As cochairs of the current campaign steering committee, their guidance will help to ensure that we achieve the goals of Transformative: Campaign for Global Change.

Mr. Severino began his career with Digital Equipment Corp., Prime Computer, and Data Translation Inc., which became the industry leader in microcomputer data acquisition systems. These experiences proved an excellent training ground for entrepreneurship: Mr. Severino went on to found Interlan, Inc., the first company to provide Ethernet adapter products for microcomputer systems, and then Wellfleet Communications, the leading supplier of high-performance systems and services for enterprise networks. In 1994, Wellfleet merged with Synoptics Communications to become Bay Networks Inc., which was later acquired by Nortel. Mr. Severino is currently engaged as an investor and adviser to emerging technology companies.

Mr. Severino has been a member of the Institute’s Board of Trustees since 1995. Over the years, he has received numerous awards including: the Rensselaer Alumni Association (RAA) Distinguished Service Award (2010); the Albert Fox Demers Medal (2003); RAA Alumni Key Award (1997); an RAA Fellows Award (1995); and the 1993 William F. Glaser ’53 Entrepreneur of the Year. Mr. Severino also has received honorary degrees from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the University of Massachusetts.

Mr. and Mrs. Severino are members of the 1824 Society of Patroons at Rensselaer, and received the prestigious Alis Aquilae Medal in 2009, which recognized donors who gave a singular gift of $1 million or more to the Institute’s $1.4 billion capital campaign, Renaissance at Rensselaer.

LEADING BY EXAMPLE GRAIG R. EASTIN VICE PRESIDENT, INSTITUTE ADVANCEMENT An organization cannot grow without a strong foundation supporting, and providing for it, and pushing the boundaries on what the future may hold. Rensselaer as an institution takes pride and passion in providing students with a world-class education, preparing them for a future of excellence, while ensuring that they are able to receive a Rensselaer education through financial aid, scholarships, and endowments.

Dr. Jackson has truly transformed Rensselaer, in setting a plan for its future, and developing a vision for the Institute, and providing for its realization through two successful capital campaigns during her tenure. The first, Renaissance at Rensselaer, surpassed its campaign goal by $400 million, and the second, Transformative: Campaign for Global Change, is rapidly approaching the halfway mark to its $1 billion goal.

Dr. Jackson has enhanced the student experience at Rensselaer through the addition of 28 new academic degree programs in emerging fields, and through building state-of-the-art facilities, creating the First-Year Experience and Clustered Learning, Advocacy, and Support for Students (CLASS), early on in her tenure to ensure students have a sense of “home away from home.” Other milestones of Dr. Jackson’s exceptional presidency include seeing historic enrollment levels, and tripling expenditures in expansion of Rensselaer’s research portfolio.

It was under Dr. Jackson’s tenure that there was a need to infuse art, the humanities, philosophy, and music into the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Through the teaching and learning initiative, Art_X@Rensselaer, students are able to discover and build on creative ideas at the intersections of those disciplines. These concepts led to the development of the Rensselaer Plan 2024, which Dr. Jackson developed, and outlines the goals for Rensselaer to provide “an undergraduate experience that surpasses all others.”

Dr. Jackson has embraced the essence of higher education to make a Rensselaer education more accessible to students in her own commitment to philanthropy. Through the Honorable Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D. Scholarship, a number of students have benefitted from a Rensselaer education. Dr. Jackson and her husband, Dr. Morris Washington, have also supported the Patroon Scholarship, Patroon Fellowship, and countless fundraising events hosted by Rensselaer in support of student scholarship.

PARENTS OF RENSSELAER ASSOCIATION All parents of Rensselaer students are members of the Parents of Rensselaer Association, and receive the Parent Newsletter. The Parents Council is a group of dedicated parent and family volunteers who serve as ambassadors for Rensselaer and provide feedback to the Student Success Office on issues of particular interest to parents and families. Parents also have the opportunity to come together annually on campus for Family Weekend.

The Class of 2023, who began their Rensselaer journey this fall, represents the strongest academic and most diverse incoming class in Institute history. This high-achieving group will have a transformative educational experience defined by the vision for The New Polytechnic, which acknowledges that the greatest challenges facing our world cannot be solved by a single person or discipline alone.

The Rensselaer approach to education prepares students for leadership and for life. Extraordinary learning opportunities, including research, internships, and international programs are available thanks to visionary programs such as The Arch, in which students spend a junior year semester away on an internship, research, or other experience, and Clustered Learning, Advocacy, and Support for Students (CLASS), which combines residential and time-based clustering, and novel integration of classroom technology.

The Office of the First-Year Experience offers a comprehensive array of programs and initiatives for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as for parents and families, that begin before students

arrive on campus and continue well beyond their first year. Highlights include Student Orientation, and the Navigating Rensselaer & Beyond program, which includes adventure/team-building activities, historical/cultural programs, and community service opportunities, all designed to help students get to know one another and to familiarize them with the Rensselaer campus, the city of Troy, and surrounding areas.

The B.S. in Music, launched in fall 2017, promises to keep Rensselaer at the forefront of cross-disciplinary inquiry in the arts and sciences. The degree is offered as a single disciplinary major, but is designed to also pair as a dual major option with the STEM disciplines as a means of preparing a modern musician that is fluent in the arts as well as the sciences. This coupling will attract a wider demographic of students within the landscape of not only other technological universities in the United States, but also music conservatories, and schools of music.

We are especially proud of this degree as it exemplifies the innovative paradigm we refer to as Art_X@Rensselaer.

The vision of Art_X establishes relationships between the arts (=art) and another field (=x), realizing the art in and of science and the science in and of art.

Rensselaer recently introduced a requirement for all undergraduate students – the first of its kind in the nation – to propel all Rensselaer students beyond the current collegiate standard of “data literacy” to “data dexterity” – proficiency in using diverse datasets to define and solve complex real-world problems. Students will complete two “data-intensive” courses; one to establish the foundations of data modeling and analysis, and a second within their academic discipline.

BRIDGING THE GAP: IMPROVING ACCESS AND ENHANCING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE To attract and retain the brightest and most promising scholars, Rensselaer must have the financial resources to compete with other top-tier universities, including those able to meet the full financial needs of students. Improving access and enhancing the student experience requires us to “bridge the gap� in available financial aid.

While Rensselaer proudly provides tuition assistance to 85% of undergraduate students, half of those students need more aid than we are able to provide.

A PIONEERING ALUMNA LEAVES A LEGACY At a ceremony held on Thursday, May 14, 2019, Dr. Nancy DeLoye Fitzroy ’49, was honored as the Admissions Building was officially designated as the Nancy DeLoye Fitzroy ’49 and Roland V. Fitzroy Jr. Admissions Building.

Dr. Fitzroy was the first woman to graduate from Rensselaer with a degree in chemical engineering, and is an internationally recognized expert in the field of mechanical engineering. In her remarks at the May 2014 presentation of the Clarence E. Davies Medal for Engineering Achievement to Dr. Fitzroy, Rensselaer President Shirley Ann Jackson referred to her as “… one of Rensselaer’s most distinguished alumnae—as well as one of its most daring and delightful.”

Dr. Fitzroy worked at General Electric from 1950 until her retirement in 1987, specializing in heat transfer and fluid flow research for application in nuclear reactor cores, gas turbines, space satellites, and other technologies. She has written more than one hundred technical papers and holds three patents.

In 1986, Dr. Fitzroy became the first woman in the U.S. to head a major professional engineering society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). In 1988, she was chosen as an honorary fellow of Britain’s Institution of Mechanical Engineers. She was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1995, and inducted into the Rensselaer Alumni Hall of Fame in 1999.

Dr. Fitzroy is also committed to making a difference for Rensselaer students, and has supported a number of philanthropic initiatives. She is a proud member of the Rensselaer Heritage Society, which recognizes individuals who have chosen to leave a legacy at Rensselaer by planning a testamentary gift or making a life income gift.

PAYING IT FORWARD Louise and Roy Davis ’78G support initiatives and organizations important to them. Together, they share their time, talent and treasure in supporting Rensselaer and the environment – two causes that carry significant meaning for each of them.

Both Roy and Louise were the first in their families to pursue higher education. Coming from humble beginnings – to the point that he had to stuff newspapers into his shoes as a child to keep them dry – Roy earned a bachelor’s degree at the University at Albany. The recent graduate soon landed a job as a clinical microbiologist at Bender Laboratory in Albany.

Bender paid for his graduate studies at Rensselaer, where he earned a master’s degree in biology. “I thought Rensselaer was the most amazing place on earth,” states Roy. “I never thought I would be able to go. Thanks to my employer, I was able to.”

Rensselaer degree in hand, several years later Roy moved to New Jersey to take a position with Warner Lambert Corp. It was there he met Louise – an Iowa State University graduate from a family of 8th generation farmers. After getting married, the two moved to Seattle where Roy went to work for a biotech company. When Roy was recruited by Johnson & Johnson (J&J) in 1984, Roy and Louise relocated back to New Jersey and started a family. This move led to a 28-year career in leadership, where he retired in 2012 as President of J&J Development Corporation and Corporate Vice President of Business Development for all of J&J worldwide. Over the course of his career, Roy led global health care businesses, helped determine J&J’s business creation, acquisition strategy, and venture investment portfolio as a global corporation, created their business accelerator, and founded a company that produced award-winning products for cancer diagnostics.

At the same time, Louise was focusing her efforts in supporting their community through volunteerism for farm and environment-based organizations, beginning at the local level and expanding to the state and national level. She eventually became a member of the town Planning Board, the Chair of their county’s soil conservation district, and a three-term councilwoman,

later to be named Deputy Mayor. Currently, Louise is leading efforts in tackling soil and water issues in Morris County, NJ, using the Jefferson Project at Lake George as a template.

Today, Roy and Louise focus their philanthropic support on Rensselaer and the environment. Together, they established the Louise M. and Roy N. Davis ’78 Scholarship through a testamentary gift. Earlier this year, Roy became a member of the board of trustees, and was named the co-chair of the Rensselaer Greater New York Executive Council. They share their time between New Jersey and Lake George, New York, spending time with their son and two grandchildren.

Roy attributes much of his professional success to his Rensselaer education. “Rensselaer is superior in how they challenge students to think and approach training your mind,” explains Roy. “I learned the importance of critical and analytical thinking. This technical knowledge and innovative thinking was critical to my success in running a multi-billion dollar international business.”

AN ICON OF THE NEW POLYTECHNIC October 2018 marked the tenth anniversary of the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC), one of the most technologically advanced performing arts centers in the world, and home to the Cognitive and Immersive Systems Laboratory.

The unique capabilities of EMPAC have allowed artists-inresidence, Rensselaer faculty, students, and researchers to turn their ideas into entirely original experiences, and further scientific and technological advances.

EMPAC has helped to give life to projects in many domains, including video, dance, musical theater, internet art, interactive installations, intermedia art, and multimedia art. EMPAC has hosted groundbreaking artists, who have built bridges between the quantifiable—photons, sound waves, and digital data— and the unquantifiable—the sense of beauty, wonder, and mystery that the arts, and sciences, elicit in us.

EMPAC also has been central to research in cognitive science, data visualization, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and gamification, empowering exploration and serving as inspiration.

In partnership with IBM, the Cognitive and Immersive Systems Laboratory (CISL) is enabling the development of smart Situations Rooms, such as cognitive boardrooms and classrooms. The room includes a 360-degree panoramic display system, an audio system, multiple cameras, motion-sensing devices, and microphones, as well as computer systems.

Utilizing an array of state-of-the-art technologies—such as context-aware systems, speech-to-text translation, pitch tone contour analysis, natural language understanding, and computer vision—artificially intelligent cognitive agents react to, interact with, and support the room’s occupants by anticipating informational needs and presenting relevant content in multiple modes using automatic generation of voice narration, visual media, and sonification.

The Mandarin Project offers a unique example of how a cyber-enabled, immersive classroom environment can be used for enhanced language instruction and learning.

When learning a new language, opportunities to speak and practice conversational skills are essential. In the immersive classroom, students are virtually transported to various locations in China where they interact with artificially intelligent, Mandarin-speaking characters to accomplish everyday tasks, such as finding a taxi, ordering a meal, or purchasing necessities.

EMPAC also provides a laboratory in which to create new data visualization tools, such as the Campfire, a novel immersive computer interface that helps small groups to work together to explore data in new ways and new dimensions, and to find groundbreaking insights within that data.

EMPAC allows us to explore the ever-changing relationship between our senses, technology, and the worlds we create around us, to make novel discoveries, and find previously unimaginable approaches to addressing myriad multidisciplinary challenges and opportunities.

ENERGY, THE ENVIRONMENT, AND SMART SYSTEMS Exploring renewable technologies, energy efficiency, and the understanding of global environmental change to preserve the biodiversity of the planet.

BIOTECHNOLOGY AND THE LIFE SCIENCES Creating new routes to drug discovery and development and understanding the fundamental mechanisms of disease, from Alzheimer’s and diabetes to cancer.

MEDIA, THE ARTS, SCIENCE, AND TECHNOLOGY Facilitating new approaches to networking, advanced visualization, sensor design, haptics, and multiscale modeling and simulation, which are supported by the core capabilities of EMPAC. COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING Focusing on high-performance computing, big data, and data analytics, which supports research and innovation across a broad front.

NANOTECHNOLOGY AND ADVANCED MATERIALS Developing robust, affordable, and sustainable methods for manufacturing new functional hybrid materials, and the hierarchical systems and products on which they are based.

TAPPING THE POTENTIAL OF THE WORLD’S NEW NATURAL RESOURCE Recognizing that data is the new natural resource of the 21st century, Rensselaer has taken a leadership position in defining a well-educated student in the world of the new data-driven economy, ensuring that all undergraduate students, regardless of major, possess data awareness and data dexterity. Through its Data Intensive (DI) requirement, Rensselaer aims to develop graduates who are sophisticated consumers, producers, and users of data—able to interpret and transform data into actionable insights and solutions to compelling problems, and adept at communicating associated findings effectively to diverse audiences.

“Our future is increasingly data-driven, and successful leaders must be able to harness the power of data in solving the problems they tackle,” stated President Shirley Ann Jackson Ph.D. “Key elements of that data dexterity are an ability to leverage data to make decisions, to understand the difference between causation and correlation, an understanding of ethical use of data, and how to visualize complex data in ways that emphasize key mechanisms. All Rensselaer graduates will have those skills.”

To inform and improve decision-making in virtually every major sector and industry, organizations worldwide are investing heavily in advanced analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) to discover and leverage new approaches to solving challenges and addressing opportunities. The World Economic Forum predicts that in the jobs landscape of 2022, the highest emerging demand by employers will be for data analysts, data scientists, and artificial intelligence and machine learning specialists.

For employees whose primary expertise may be in other disciplines, the new expectation of employers is that they will be proficient in understanding and applying diverse datasets, and competent “translators” able to ensure that the deep insights generated through sophisticated analytics lead to enterprise-scale impact. By 2026, the McKinsey Global Institute estimates that employee demand for such “data translators” in the United States alone could reach four million.

Anticipating such demand, Rensselaer offers undergraduates the opportunity to pursue a multidisciplinary minor in data science and engineering. Not only is the new minor aimed at giving students in-depth, hands-on experience with data in their chosen discipline, it also is intended to deepen collaboration across majors.

“The data science and engineering minor drives home the vision of Rensselaer as a comprehensive polytechnic. It’s a great example of how to integrate diverse disciplines in order to solve complex and important problems,” noted David Mendonça, professor of industrial and systems engineering who developed the program. “It reinforces the notion that when you come to Rensselaer, the barriers between disciplines are really low and your imagination can fly.”

This fall, Rensselaer also introduced a new undergraduate degree program in business analytics. Offered through the Lally School of Management, the new program will equip students with a unique combination of data science skills and fundamental business skills as they enter the workforce.

REGIONAL NETWORKS: MAKING A DIFFERENCE To strengthen the regional connections of active Rensselaer alumni, alumnae, and parents, we have developed regional networks in Silicon Valley, Greater New York and New England, and are looking to develop more. Regional Networks offer opportunities for alumni, alumnae and parent engagement and to strengthen partnerships among individuals, companies, foundations, government agencies, and the Institute.

Within each Regional Network there is an Executive Council. Members of the Executive Councils lead conversations and events that align with the Institute’s expertise in groundbreaking interdisciplinary research and innovative pedagogy. Collectively these councils have committed to nearly $3 million in philanthropic support of Rensselaer’s capital campaign, Transformative: Campaign for Global Change, and hosted nearly 20 events attracting over 1,000 attendees in the past year.

RENSSELAER ATHLETICS AND OUR WORLD-CLASS SCHOLAR-ATHLETES Intercollegiate athletics and recreational programs at Rensselaer are built upon a successful balance of academic and athletic excellence. World-class facilities, first-rate support services, and exceptional coaching and teaching ensure that students realize their full potential both as individuals and as members of teams.

Our student-athletes possess the talent and academic focus to achieve success on and off the field. Seventy-five percent of students participate in some form of athletic activity, including intercollegiate, club, and recreation.

The 2018-19 academic year was one of most successful ever. Ten teams earned a Top 25 National Ranking: Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Football, Men’s Swimming, Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track, Men’s Tennis, Men’s Lacrosse, Softball, and Men’s Outdoor Track. In addition, 40 percent of our student-athletes

earned academic distinction, which requires a GPA of 3.3 or higher. There were 1,750 students involved in 51 club sports, and 2,350 unique participants in intramurals.

Finally, our students contributed more than 2,000 hours of volunteer service to the Capital Region community!

The men’s hockey team placed 20 student-athletes on the 2018-19 ECAC Hockey All-Academic team, and the Engineers saw 10 student-athletes earn the distinction for the first time. Senior Brady Wiffen was named to the Commissioner’s List, earning a 4.0 grade point average in his senior year. Players are eligible for the All-Academic team if they earn a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.00 on a 4.00 scale or have a GPA over 3.00 over the past three semesters.

Mueller ’64 Endowed Memorial Scholarship, Nicholas Villalobos–Best ’21 has been inspired at Rensselaer to found his own club and volunteer with the Sustainability Task Force.
