CHAIRMAN
Thomas Ellis
Dear Fellow Griffins, 2018-2019 was an amazing year for Roycemore! Graduating a class (27) of seniors well-prepared for their futures, including five “lifers” was one of several significant milestones that are detailed in this Year in Review. Those milestones together with the myriad accomplishments of students in every grade served as meaningful reminders of the privilege I have to serve as Chair of Roycemore’s Board of Trustees. I remain grateful to be part of this remarkable institution alongside its dedicated faculty and staff, students, and their families. I am pleased to report that Roycemore’s financial condition and outlook continue to improve over the last year. The Board of Trustees implemented strategies that allowed the school to continue to pay down the principal on its debt and to lay the foundation for an effective and affordable restructuring of its long-term debt. Other strategies and policies developed by the Board and Administration have enhanced philanthropic support and overall community engagement. A total of $711,000 was raised during the year in a variety of ways. The greatest percentage of total fundraising came through the Griffin Fund Roycemore’s Annual Fund, enabling more field experiences, professional development for our faculty, books for our library, and technology enhancements. The Annual Auction and Scholarship Dinner raised over $200,000 that will directly support our scholarship fund, creating an opportunity for a wide array of financial diversity in our school. This incredible result would not have been possible without the growing support from our community members at every level. Thank you, and I ask you to join me this school year in supporting the school’s important and benevolent mission by making your own meaningful gift to Roycemore School and encouraging others to do so. Finally, we have the icing on the cake or the crown on the Griffin - Roycemore’s graduating class of 2019 earned over $2 million in merit scholarships! Our college counselor, Stacia Campbell, helped our graduates find the school that was just right for each of them. Graduating so many long-standing students means a lot of history with our entire faculty, and their influence will be missed. But, this class left a legacy of outstanding academics, athletics, involvement, and joy. There is much more to learn and many insights to be gained as you read this Roycemore Year in Review. Remarkable things are happening at Roycemore, and I hope it excites you as much as it excites me about what comes next! With greatest appreciation,
Thomas J. Ellis Chair, Board of Trustees
1 YEAR IN REVIEW | 2018-2019
HEAD OF SCHOOL & PRESIDENT Adrianne Finley Odell Dear Fellow Griffins, Each year there is MORE to be excited about at Roycemore! Thanks to our wonderful faculty team, volunteers and supporters for a great school year. Some of the highlights of the 2018-2019 school year include: •
Receiving recognition as the #5 ranked K-12 Private School in Illinois by Niche.com.
•
A new collaboration with Adobe Corporation that put the power of the Creative Cloud in the hands of our students and teachers. In addition, experts from Adobe taught our teachers how to teach Design Thinking, a powerful problem-solving process. As a result, our students are learning this important skill that they will be able to apply to a variety of issues and topics.
• Our partnership with Northwestern University has been further strengthened, evidenced by: - Joint Book Chats and film sponsorships with the School of Education and Social Policy and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). - Roycemore students providing tech tutoring to adult students at OLLI. - The Center for Talent Development (CTD) hosting summer and weekend programs at Roycemore for gifted students. - Seven of our high school students were dual-enrolled at Northwestern University as well as Roycemore through our NU Option. •
A record-breaking summer camp with more registrations and students served than ever before.
• Our 27 seniors have matriculated to 24 different colleges in 15 different states- from Maine to Oregon, and from North Carolina to Michigan. They are attending large public institutions, small private colleges, art schools, tech schools, and Ivy League institutions-- schools that are the right fit for each of them and their goals. We have much to be proud of at Roycemore, and I know you share this pride in our school and community because YOU helped make this year a great success. Thank you for the love you give to our students and teachers every day. With your partnership, we create a very special environment for our students that allows them to reach their true potential. Sincerely,
Adrianne Finley Odell Head of School

ELINOR RICE FUCHS DISTINGUISHED TEACHER | 2019 RUTH HECHT
Students and alumni find many ways to thank teachers for the life-changing work that they do. In 1993, Edith-Marie Appleton from the Class of 1937 thanked her former teacher and close friend in a remarkable way. She gave $1 million to honor Elinor Rice Fuchs and now every year Roycemore names one faculty member as the Elinor Rice Fuchs Distinguished Teacher of the Year. This year the honor goes to Upper School Art Teacher, Ruth Hecht. She has a special ability to connect with students and helps them discover strengths that they may not even
know they have. Her warm care, and calm, steady and expert guidance provides the kind of individual support that Roycemore is known for. Ruth is deeply invested in each child. Students can often be found in her classroom outside of class time to finish working on a project because they care so deeply about getting it right. She is deeply attuned to her students and it is clear how much she loves them and is proud of their accomplishments.
Roycemore is extremely proud to name Ruth Hecht as this year’s Elinor Rice Fuchs Teacher of the Year!
In her 17 years of service at Roycemore, Ruth has grown tremendously as a teacher, attending institutes in the summer to further her talent. She collaborates with other faculty members and this year did some great collaborative work with the world history class. She has been

IMAN AMINI
Iman Amini’s life story has been one of perseverance, overcoming and becoming. Iman is originally from Kabul, Afghanistan, where an estimated less than ten percent of students pursue an education through 12th grade. In high school in Kabul, one of his teachers recognized his potential and handed him a list with over 300 schools from China to the United States that accept international students, thereby inspiring him to envision a future abroad for the first time. Iman spent months researching schools before finally whittling his list down to 50 schools, Roycemore School being one of them.
When Amanda Avery, the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, received his application, she felt compelled to bring it to the board’s attention. Equally moved, the board made an exception and agreed to accept Iman Iman Amini walking the stage at Roycemore’s and cover 80% of his tuition, a rarity as 2019 high school commencement to receive independent schools do not usually his diploma. offer significant financial assistance to international students. From there, Iman was able to pursue the quality of

education he so desired, and he enrolled at Roycemore in the fall of 2017. Iman initially struggled to engage socially in American culture. Soon enough, he began to emerge, making social connections, playing socccer, and finding spaces outside of school to interact with other Afghans living in the U.S. The school community also rallied around him to help him financially, with families buying him winter clothes and soccer shoes, a board member anonymously donating funds for health care and another board member buying him a bike. His story in America will not end upon his graduation from Roycemore School. In June, as he was awarded a full scholarship to Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C. As he continues to embark on the road less traveled, he takes with him the energy, the drive and the intelligence to not just make changes, but to be the change.
RFA
The Roycemore Family Association
As each family joins our school, they automatically become a member of the Roycemore Family Association (RFA). The RFA serves Roycemore through scheduling community events, supporting classrooms through volunteerism, supporting admissions, and annual fundraising efforts. In the 2018-2019 year the RFA was led by seven outstanding volunteers: Stephanie Dixon, alumna of 2001 and mother to Emmanuel and Xavier, represented the Lower School. Radu Fega, father to Sabrina, represented the Lower School. Jim Saltouros, father to Theo and Haido, represented the Middle School. Mairead Reidy, mother to Tomà s, represented the Middle School Betsy Marantz, mother to Cara, represented the Upper School. Sarah Rosen, mother to Benjamin, represented the Upper School. Laura Daniel, mother to Madeline and Molly, served as our Volunteer Coordinator. The RFA hosted and coordinated several events called Griffin Gatherings over the year including: Back to School Griffin Gathering Admissions Mornings Community Dinner Out Give Back events (funding Teacher Appreciation) Winter Program Dinner Roycemore School Bulls Night Out Middle School Potluck Upper School Social - hosted by Sarah and James Rosen Upper School Game Night - hosted by Aisling Colon and Jonathan Holloway Lower School Sleep Under Additionally the RFA sold spirit wear and concessions, planned and executed teacher appreciation throughout the year with gifts during the winter holiday season, provided Valentine’s Day treats, and spearheaded the incredible Teacher Appreciation Week.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS | 2019 GEOFF MARK, CLASS OF ‘85
This year’s Distinguished Alumnus is Geoffrey Mark, a longtime animations and visual effects expert. Geoff graduated from Roycemore School in 1985. After leaving Roycemore, he went on to the University of Southern California to continue his academic studies. There, he majored in Classical Music Composition while spending his free time working in the Drama Department and as a volunteer for the student radio station on campus. Since graduating from USC, Geoff has enjoyed an exciting career spanning over thirty years in the ever-changing Entertainment industry. He started by working in cartoons and video games, working on several Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo games. He then moved on and discovered his true passion, creating computer graphics for Television and Film. Geoff has contributed computer graphics to dozens of projects, Spider-Man 3, Battlestar Galactica, Serenity, and Sharknado being among the more notable ones.
to offer “three simple yet hard fought secrets” that he has discovered over the course of his career. The first secret is to always show up to work no matter what, as it will put you ahead of anyone who is not fully committed to the job and show the bosses that they can count on you. Geoff‘s second secret is to ask questions and seek out conversation with veterans of your respective industry in order to uncover the “labyrinth of hidden knowledge and practices.” His final piece of advice, the most difficult of them all, is to make mistakes and learn from them. Here are some of Geoff‘s closing remarks, “With the right attitude, you learn more from the smallest mistake than from the largest success. From my time here, I know that Roycemore has taught each of you many things, the most important of which is the ability to learn and keep learning. Each of my secrets really leads to that. Keep on learning.” Roycemore is grateful to see the success of alumni passed on to our current students. If you would like to read Geoff’s speech in its entirety, please contact us.
The 2019 Distinguished Alumnus returned to Roycemore not to share advice for our graduating class, as one would expect, but rather

She loved baking and was making so many treats, that the family didn’t have room on their counters for all her creations. After taking orders from family and friends, word spread about her baking talents and soon orders were coming in from all around the community and beyond. She now attends the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York and is pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Baking and Pastry Arts and Food Business Management. Congratulations to Tatum for all her accomplishments and in following her passion towards a bright future in the Culinary Arts.

NAOMI ALIZA RUBENSTEIN ’14
After high school she moved to the United Kingdom to do an undergraduate degree in conservation and restoration of historic objects (art and archaeological conservation and specialised in metals and archaeological material) at the University of Lincoln, in Lincoln, UK, from which she graduated in 2017. She then spent a year working full time as an intern conservator at Derby Museum and Art Gallery, in Derby, UK. There she taught and trained and supervised a team of volunteers to carry out volunteers conservation skills on objects from musuem collections, and supervised the treatment of over 700 objects in a 9 month-period to go on display in a new gallery. From that she discovered her love of teaching and it became clear that she wanted to teach at the university level and share her love of the topic. In 2018, as a prerequisite for a PhD, she took an intensive 12 month masters degree in Archaeological Science at the University of Liverpool. She will remain at Liverpool to start a PhD in the area of archaeological science.

Major Gifts 2016-2017
Roycemore School transforms lives. For that, we need you.
From the story of Geoff and his JST-launched career, to Iman’s incredible journey, and our amazing class of 2019, and updates from alums from all over, a Roycemore eduation can be a gateway
to the world.
Philanthropic support is vital to the sustainability of our mission, and inherent to our commitment to true diversity including economic, racial, ethnic, religious, gender identity, and sexual preference. Roycemore needs annual support to provide high quality education seasoned with compassion, kindness and respect. The Griffin Fund is our annual drive to bridge the gap between tuition and operations which ensures we can recruit and retain talented, compassionate educators, to create opportunities for students to explore their community, and to maintain our beautiful campus. Annual fund dollars were down in 2018-2019 while all other venues of funding saw an increase. Some transformative gifts were made

by a group of dedicated individuals, inpacting both the annual fund and our major gifts. It is important that every member of our community considers a contribution as every gift to the annual fund has an impact on our daily operations. Major Gifts are contributed for many kinds of reasons: to support annual operations, for scholarship and financial aid programs, and capital projects. This year our major gifts were directed at budget relief and annual operations. Our Special Event this year was the amazing “April in Paris” Scholarship and Auction Dinner. We transformed the school physically in an effort to raise funds that will transform lives. We came together in community to celebrate and create opportunities for young people. Roycemore School is truly grateful for the incredible financial support received in the 2018-2019 school year.
It is interesting to note that while 4% of our annual dollars came from faculty and staff, 100% of our faculty and staff participated by donating to the annual fund. From part-time staff, to our administrators and teachers, everyone gave what they could. In addition to the many hours spent focused on daily Lorem ipsum inspiration, college preparedness, and eye-opening experiments, our faculty gave back as an incredible force. This is the second year running that our staff has committed to the annual fund at 100%
This year we experienced an incredible uptick in participation from our current parents, 52% of whom gave, our wonderful grandparents, 16% of whom gave, and our alumni parents who conitinue to support the school at generous levels. These, together with special donations from former faculty, foundations, corporations, friends, and estates created an impressive year for Roycemore School’s philanthropic mission.
Equally impressive, our Trustees were 100% committed to the annual fund. Each of them committed early, and continued to provide support throughout the year. Dedicated parents, grandparents and alumni give hours of their time, their impressive experience and insights and also support the school financially.

April in Paris
Annual Auction & Scholarship Dinner On Saturday, April 27, Roycemore School welcomed 180 guests to “April in Paris,” a fundraising auction and dinner, to support scholarships and financial aid at Roycemore. The energy in the building was electric as we welcomed many alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, current parents, trustees, faculty, former faculty and many friends to join together on a mission-focused evening to support Roycemore’s long-standing commitment to economic diversity at the school. Guests were welcomed by Roycemore students who helped in a variety of ways, from assisting with parking as guests navigated a surprise late April snow event, to taking coats, to playing music, delivering desserts to tables (speaking French!) and assisting with the paddle raise to support scholarship. One of our senior scholarship recipients, Daria Chudnovsky, shared with attendees how the Eisner Scholarship made her high school journey possible and allowed her to have the time to continue her commitment to the violin, while taking higher level math and Russian literature classes at Northwestern University through Roycemore’s collaboration with the university. An alumna from the class of 2011, Cornelia Leach, shared how she gained confidence as a Roycemore student which she ultimately parlayed into higher education, obtaining her BA and MBAs before landing a position as a Talent Coordinator for a Chicago tech company. She spent much of last year sharing her inspiring story with young people around Illinois as Miss Black US Ambassador. Dozens of individuals joined in as volunteers to make the event a success, from sponsors to the event, to attendees, to silent and live auction donors, and individuals who painted the incredible canvases that lined the walls of the room, transporting attendees into the streets of Paris, including L’Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower lit up with twinkle lights. Fifty-seven individuals were either involved in the painting of the canvases, participated on the planning committee, or volunteered the night of the event. That’s community! We were pleased to have Roycemore grandparent, Jerry Springer, serve as our guest auctioneer. Prior to starting the bidding, however, Jerry shared a few personal thoughts about the importance of community and giving to the scholarship fund. “There is such a sense of community and commitment here. It’s the perfect environment to put a child in. This needs to be looked at not just as charitable giving. It has to be looked at as an investment. This is the single most important investment you can make in your life. You are investing in your own children and in your own grandchildren. This is not just getting a report every month from your broker, no, you’re investing in your child who’s going to grow up into a wonderful adult. “ Our faculty and students are grateful for the support and enthusiasm of the Roycemore community. Special thanks to the incredible group of volunteers who made it happen: Steve Jackson, Committee Chair, Kindergarten and 1st grade grandparent; Ruby Badreldin, Kindergarten and 3rd grade parent; Stephanie Dixon 2nd and 5th grade parent; Karen Huston, Alum parent; Robyn Floyd, faculty; Kelly Kreglow, 2nd grade parent; Eva Neuhauser 2nd and 5th grade grandparent, Rich Odell, First Spouse; Sarah Rosen, 10th grade parent, Lisa Ventura, 4th grade parent; and Catherine Walgreen, 4th grade parent.

THANK YOU FOR THIS MOMENT. This moment, when there is nothing left to say but “thank you. This moment is an incredible illustration of the bond our students and faculty share at Roycemore School. It is their second home, the place where they can try and fail, and try again. Where they are seen and appreciated for exactly who they are. Where they are cared for as students, and as family. This is the Roycemore spirit. Made possible by a faculty who has the privilege of small class sizes so that every child is known, loved and pushed in just the right way. Your gifts are the foundation of moments like these. The following pages are a listing of the friends and family of Roycemore School during the 2018-2019 year. You have our deepest appreciation.
