Research reports have shown that global slots sales have picked up significantly over the past quarter and that the Casino Management Systems market is also expected to boom. This on the back of a third independent forecast that estimates the global casino market to reach in excess of $153-billion with the next four years.

All of this positive sentiment is good news for a casino market that has had to weather the savage storms of the global pandemic. Read in conjunction with these reports, and viewed against the optimistic performance of local casino resort operator Sun International, it appears that the industry is set for a recovery.

Sunbet - Sun International’s online sportsbetting operator - also posted record results, leading many to believe that the phenomenal growth of sportsbetting and online operations over the past few years may not have occured wholly at the expense of the downturn in terrestrial casino patronage.

Perhaps online gaming has bred a new and distinct following, and will continue this growth alongside the recovery of land-based casinos?

Top South African Female Lawyer to Head Gauteng Gambling Board Top South African lawyer advocate Anthea Platt SC has been sworn in as the chairperson of the Gauteng Gambling Board (GGB). This was confirmed by the Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development, Parks Tau, who outlined the role of the board members in increasing revenue for the province.

latt will be assisted by businessman Timothy Sukazi who was appointed as her deputy chairperson. The appointment of the new board was part of measures undertaken by Tau to strengthen governance and management at the GGB. Tau directed the new board to resolve matters of governance that would include the appointment of the executive management.

“The GGB, which is responsible for regulating the gambling industry in the province, is critical to Gauteng’s economy. The gambling industry in Gauteng plays an important role in assisting the provincial government to create jobs and to grow the province’s economy,” he said.

He asked the new board to accelerate the GGB’s efforts to promote socio-economic inclusivity in the gambling industry, saying “transformation of the gambling industry is one of the key deliverables of the GGB”.

“We expect the new board to drive transformation in the industry for the benefit of the people of the province, and the country as a whole.”

Since its inception, the GGB has collected taxes well over R14 billion on behalf of the Gauteng

provincial government.

Despite the difficult domestic and global economic environment due to the Covid-19 pandemic over the past two years, the contribution of the GGB continues to be a significant source of revenue to the provincial fiscus.The Gauteng provincial government will continue to act decisively to address challenges at provincial entities to ensure that they fulfil their economic and developmental mandates.

Speaking after her official swearing-in, Platt said: “As new members of the board, we are fully committed to regulating the gambling industry in a transparent, ethical, equitable, competent and efficient manner for the benefit of all stakeholders.”

She added: “We will work hard to improve the regulatory framework while we also ensure that we embrace new technologies through the introduction of new gambling legislation for the province. It is essential that we discharge our duties to maintain law and order in the gambling industry by making sure that the environment is fair, not only for the licensees but also for the punters and all affected stakeholders.

It is essential that the GGB continues to carry out

its mandate and further contribute to the economic recovery solutions of the Gauteng Province.”

The new board was appointed in terms of the Gauteng Gambling Board Act No. 4 of 1996, and consists of the following: – Chairperson: Adv. SIU Raids South African Lottery Commission after R300m Fraudulent Lotto Payments The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) raided the offices of the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) in Kimberley recently after the SIU had previously found that NLC funds to the tune of R300 million were allegedly spent on items like cars and private homes. The NLC says it is co-operating with the SIU investigation.

his follows an explosive report by the SIU submitted to Parliament recently detailing collusion between NLC officials and purported non-profit organisations. It found that in a series of transactions, millions of rands at a time were funnelled from the NLC - funds which were meant to develop facilities like drug rehabilitation centres, old age homes, and youth empowerment facilities, but instead went towards purchasing cars and luxury homes.

SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago told Fin24 that the raid on the offices of the NLC in Kimberley were part of an advancing investigation into corruption at the commission.

“Yes, we are at the moment in Kimberley and we have a warrant to search and seize documents here in Kimberly because of the allegation that we are looking into,” Kganyago said.

“

Kganyago said the raid would not stop at the operations of the NLC but would include the private residences of implicated NLC officials and the questioning of those implicated.

“We will call and question individuals because people are also checking the houses of officials in the commission in line with investigating the allegations that were made,” said Kganyago.

During a Post Cabinet briefing, Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele welcomed the raid as “remarkable progress” by the SIU. “This will ensure the necessary steps can be taken to hold accountable persons or organisations implicated in the unlawful misappropriation of funds earmarked to benefit the poor,” said Gungubele.

National Lotteries Commission spokesperson Ndivhuho Mafela said the NLC is co-operating with the SIU investigation.

The NLC serves as South Africa’s only lotteries and sports pool betting regulator, but also serves as a grant funder for nongovernment organisations established in causes aimed at improving the lives of South Africans.

“We have opened all our offices to enable the SIU’s investigation. We welcome the investigation as one of the checks and balances of state institutions.

During a meeting with Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry, Minister of Trade Industry and Economic Development Ebrahim Patel committed to dissolving the board of the NLC before its expiry date at the end of March.

Ghana’s Planned Social Media Tax will Impact Gambling and Betting alongside Facebook and Google A new plan to impose taxation on global social media giants like Facebook and Google by the Ghananian government, will have profound implications for the country’s gaming operators.

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) is planning on rasing US$4170-million (GHC 2.7-billion) from taxe as it targets betting, gaming, and e-commerce companies this year.

The GRA plans to collect most of its tax revenue from betting, gaming, and online companies including Facebook, Google, Netflix, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Tiktok in a tax plan its says it is ready to deply by the

end of 2022.

The Commissioner of the Domestic Tax Revenue Division (DTRD) of the GRA, Mr Edward Appenteng Gyamerah stated that the GRA is rolling out a policy to enable it to have a fair share of taxes from most of these companies.

The Commissioner said they had already started discussions with some of these online foreign entities and they’ve already started registering

within Ghana to comply with the new policy.

The Commissioner also stated that they were developing a system to monitor operations of these entities which is currently under test trial and they had that it would be deployed in the second quarter of 2022. He, therefore, appealed to the players and other stakeholders to support the authority to collect the right taxes due to the state.

Growth in Global Slots Sales; Casino Market and Systems Boom Forecast Research reports have shown that global slots sales have picked up significantly over the past quarter and that the Casino Management Systems market is also expected to boom. This on the back of a third independent forecast that estimates the global casino market to reach in excess of $153-billion with the next four years.

lobal Slots sales have grown over the fourth quarter by 31 per cent year-overyear to 31,240, and grew 19 per cent quarter-over-quarter, according to Todd Eilers of Eilers and Krejcik Gaming.

Aristocrat led unit sales with 25 per cent share or 7,754 units, with IGT following at 24 per cent and Scientific Games at 18 per cent, according to Fantini’s Gaming Report. US and Canada gaming operations revenue is estimated to have grown 47 per cent year-over-year and six per cent quarter-over-quarter to $985m.

Aristocrat is estimated to have led gaming operations market share at 35 per cent, followed

by Scientific Games at 19 per cent, IGT at 18 per cent and Everi at 10 percent.

According to research published by Research and Markets, the Casino Management Systems Global Markets Report 2022: Security and Surveillance, Analytics, Accounting and Cash Management, Player Tracking, Property report, reveals that the global casino management systems market is expected to grow from $5.71 billion in 2021 to $6.85 billion in 2022 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.1%.

The market is expected to reach $12.74 billion in 2026 at a CAGR of 16.8%.

The casino management systems market consists of sales of casino management systems by entities (organizations, sole traders, and partnerships) that are used to assist in the ongoing management, monitoring, and operations of casino or gaming organizations.

Casino management systems provide various club operations such as management systems, accounting and analytics tools, and security

and surveillance systems. These technologies assist in keeping track of client and personnel activities across the gaming club floor, as well as maintaining a database for future use.

The main types of components in casino management systems are hardware and software. The software involves CRM software, casino player tracking software, PMS, and inventory management systems that are being used in casino games. The different applications include security and surveillance, analytics, accounting, and cash management, player tracking, property management, marketing and promotions, others and are implemented in small and medium casinos, large casinos.

North America was the largest region in the casino management systems market in 2020.

Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing region in the forecast period. The regions covered in this report are Asia-Pacific, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, North America, South America, Middle East and Africa.

Increasing legalization and rising number of gaming establishments are expected to propel the growth of the casino management systems market. A gaming establishment refers to any gaming property such as a casino, hotel, or resort that includes various games or betting that require a legal license.

For instance, in July 2021, in Germany, a new interstate Treaty on Gambling (“ISTG 2021”) has come into action, which includes new licensing possibilities for sports betting, virtual slot machines, and online poker for private operators.

Amid the COVID-19 crisis, the global market for Casinos estimated at US$129.2- billion in the year 2022, is projected to reach a revised size of US$153.2 -billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 3.7% over the analysis period. Gambling Machines, one of the segments analyzed in the report, is projected to record a 4.1% CAGR and reach US$77.4-billion. After a thorough analysis of the business implications of the pandemic and its induced economic crisis, growth in the Gaming Tables segment is readjusted to a revised 3.5% CAGR for the next 7-year period.

Sun International Posts Strong Performance, Poised for Growth • Income from continuing operations increased by 29% • Adjusted headline earnings improved to R110 million • Group adjusted EBITDA up 80% • Adjusted profit before tax of R256 million • Adjusted headline earnings of 44 cents per share • Strong growth achieved in SunBet online business Sun International released its full-year results this week, showing strong growth in revenue and adjusted EBITDA and a significant reduction in group debt, despite the substantial impact of Covid-19 related restrictions on operations.

Sun International CE Anthony Leeming remarked: “Through the Covid-19 pandemic, the group has fundamentally re-evaluated how it operates, with a focus on efficiencies and permanently eliminating cost inefficiencies and a renewed startegic intent.”

“Sun International’s unique omni-channel offering across casinos, Limited Payout Machines (LPMs), online gaming, sports betting, resorts and hotels provides an integrated premium gaming and leisure customer proposition which supported the resilience and recovery of revenue for the group during 2021.

“Casino operations and alternate gaming, which make up 80% of group revenue, showed a significant recovery as lockdown restrictions eased.

The group was able to successfully defend or grow market share at most urban casinos, while income generated from Sun Slots rebounded to preCovid-19 levels. SunBet generated record income during the year and is rapidly upscaling its premium sports and online betting offering,” Leeming said.

The R650 million in recurring cost savings embedded during 2020 resulted in margin resilience, even at reduced levels of operation.

During 2021, casino operations delivered an adjusted EBITDA margin of over 30% despite the restricted trading conditions. Operational restructuring at the group‘s hospitality properties resulted in R180m in annualised cost savings at Sun City alone. The various cost optimisation initiatives identified and implemented over the last two years imply an adjusted EBITDA margin improvement on the 2019 South African results from 28% to 34%.

Balance sheet de-gearing from operational cashflow accelerated in 2021, with net debt of R541m repaid during the financial year. The group’s capital allocation priorities remain focused on reducing leverage to create capacity for the reinstatement of dividends over the short to medium term and retaining flexibility for disciplined investment in high-return opportunities.

Casino income increased by 22% compared to the 2020 year. Since the easing of the lockdown restrictions, the group‘s market share in the competitive Gauteng market increased from 25.47% in 2019 to 27.32% in 2021, while in KwaZulu-Natal it remained in line with the prior year.

Overall, casino operations generated adjusted EBITDA of R1,433m for the year. The effects of the achieved cost saving initiatives, reduced salaries and efficiencies were clearly evident. Despite casino income being 37% below levels achieved in 2019, the group achieved 56% of the 2019 adjusted EBITDA at a margin of over 30%.

Sun Slots income increased from R886m to R1,242m, with adjusted EBITDA up from R202m to R313m for the year under review.

The LPM business proved remarkably resilient, with a strong recovery in trading following the easing of the alcohol ban and relaxation of curfew hours in the last week of January 2021. The group swiftly reactivated closed sites, resulting in 4,652 of the machines being made available for play during the period under review.

SunBet continued its strong growth trajectory in 2021 and remains an exciting prospect for the group. Active players continue to grow and with additional games being offered, the overall player experience has been enhanced. At the end of the year under review, SunBet achieved a substantial improvement in key performance indicators which included: • New player acquisitions up by 41% against 2020 and 88% compared to 2019; • Turnover up 78% against 2020 and 66% against 2019; and • Gaming income up to R182 million which represents an increase of 33% against 2020 and 30% against 2019.

“We believe SunBet offers the group significant

and exciting growth potential, and with this in mind we continue to invest in people and marketing in order to significantly increase our share of the fastgrowing online gaming market“ said Leeming.

With the introduction of live dealer casino style games and potentially slot style games in the near future, the group is well placed to capitalise on this opportunity. Overall income was up 33% for the period while a small adjusted EBITDA loss was incurred as the group increased its marketing effort and addressed the staffing structures.

“The opportunity for SunBet to develop synergies with the group’s casino and hotel portfolio offering adds value to SunBet players and positions this unit for significant organic growth.

Priority investment in the right people, continued operational improvements and focused marketing will allow SunBet to gain market share in this exciting industry,” Leeming said.

Total resorts and hotels operations income was up 39% in 2021 to R1,559bn from R1,123bn in 2020, however income remained 39% below 2019 levels. Overall, the group‘s resorts and hotels incurred an adjusted EBITDA loss of R56m for the year, significantly improved from an adjusted EBITDA loss of R158m during 2020.

Sun City Vacation Club proved remarkably resilient throughout the lockdown period with R185m in cash generated in time share sales during 2020 and 2021.

Overall group debt (excluding IFRS 16 lease liabilities) reduced from R7,630m to R7,089m.

The group‘s debt to adjusted EBITDA and interest cover of 4.03 times and 2.67 times was well within its lenders covenant of 6.0 times and 1.75 times respectively.

Income from 2021 continuing operations increased by 29%, from R6,054m to R7,812m, and with sustainable cost savings of over R650m, continuing adjusted EBITDA was up 80% to R1,685m. Total group headline earnings improved from a loss of R409m to earnings of R265m, equivalent to headline earnings of 106 cents per share, from a loss of 234 cents per share in the prior year.

Peermont Plans to Relocate Gambling Licence after of Mmabatho Palms Fire Following the fire that gutted large parts of the Mmabatho Palms Casino last year, Peermont Group plans to transfer its gambling licence from the Mahikeng-based Mmabatho Palms Hotel and Casino, to Rustenburg.

Peermont has already applied to the North West Board for its gambling business to be transferred.

In September last year part of the flagship Mmabatho Palms Hotel was destroyed by a fire.

It has now emerged that the casino may never operate in Mahikeng again.

The Peermont Group confirmed that it applied for its gambling licence to be transferred from the Mmabatho Palms Hotel in Mahikeng – to a destination near the Waterfall Mall in Rustenburg. However, the group says it will continue with conference, food and beverage operations at Mmabatho Palms.

“The staff employed at Mmabatho palms will have the first right of refusal to positions available at the Waterfall hotel and casino. The staff members employed at Mmabatho Palms who do not wish to relocate to Rustenburg will be accommodated at the remaining operations of Mmabatho Palms as much as this is possible.

The majority of the remaining vacant positions will be recruited for within Peermont and with Rustenburg,” spokesperson Nikki Evans said.

Strategic Investment to launch 888 Brand in Africa 888 Holdings has signed an agreement with five industry veterans to form a new joint venture that will operate 888 brands in online betting and gaming markets across selected regulated markets in Africa.

88 has invested in a minority stake in 888Africa, with the option to increase this to take control and ultimately own up to 100 per cent of the venture in the future.

Gaming in the Post-Covid Era

Toward the end of the last decade, a discussion that dominated the gaming landscape, was how far reaching of an impact would online betting have on brick-andmortar institutions. It goes without saying that some even more pressing world events would have an even greater impact in the early part of this decade.

I

n a digital, post-covid world, operators have multiple challenges. However, it will be to your fortune to find the opportunities presented by those challenges.

Promotions are synonymous with the gaming industry, and have been a tool in the marketing box to leverage additional spend from guests. Many guests would argue, and do, that promotions have in recent history been viewed purely through a short-term ROI lens, with little regard to the longterm sentiment they harvest. The very core of this assertion is guest experience.

Guest experience is what secures their return, and the promotion is what leverages their spend.

The online betting world has a far greater challenge in offering guests experience, and similar guests should be aggressively marketed to through digital marketing. It is far too easy for operators to complain that online operators are at an advantage when many have not increased their digital marketing budgets accordingly to hunt down would-be visitors.

Additionally, it has been widely reported that in the third quarter of 2021, the Las Vegas strip had its biggest quarter since 2006 – remarkably, in a post-covid world. What we can surmise from this is that as lockdown restrictions are eased, guests are exercising their pent-up desire for real world experience. Guests are eager to get out.

From Luggage Porter to General Manager of Sun International’s only Beachfront Casino Resort Peter Tshidi was appointed General Manager of Sun International’s Wild Coast Sun on 1 May 2019. His return to the Sun International stable came after he had initially started his journey with the Group 22 years ago at The Palace at Sun City.

P

eter started out as a Luggage Porter at The Palace of The Lost City in 1997.

Since then, he has gained a wealth of experience in local and international hotel operations, retail, operations management and casino operations, both with Sun International and elsewhere.

Today he sees himself as the custodian of a national and significant provincial tourism asset – The Wild Coast Sun. The WCS is Sun International’s only beachfront resort and second oldest property after Sun City, having celebrated its 40th birthday at the end of 2021.

“Being back with Sun International makes me feel like I have been around the world and have come home,” he said on his appointment at the Wild Coast Sun. Peter is hugely passionate about South Africa as a destination and sees the Eastern Cape as a largely undiscovered jewel, a wonderland of people, natural beauty and products.

He studied Hotel and Tourism Management with Fáilte Ireland, Ireland’s national tourism authority based in Galway.

“But during my career, I’ve done many other managerial short courses and management classes on a wide range of topics and skills within the industry,” he says.

“But what I found most memorable was gaining personal knowledge by talking to the people I met during these classes. I am still learning today, by engaging with people from all walks of life.”

He is not a man to rest on his laurels. He simply says: “My biggest achievement is yet to come. I am always looking to achieve more tomorrow than I did today.”

So even though the hospitality and tourism sectors were among the hardest hit by the pandemic, Peter and his dedicated team have steered the Wild Coast Sun ship through the worst of the storm.

Occupational Health and Safety Beyond the Risk Register Most businesses have found themselves crippled by Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) non-compliance cases; or irreparably damaged by tragedies that could have been avoidable.

T

he human, social and economic costs of occupational accidents, injuries and diseases have long been the cause for concern at all levels at the workplace. Measures and strategies designed to prevent, control, reduce or eliminate occupational hazards and risks have been developed and applied continuously over the years to keep pace with technological and economic changes. Yet, occupational accidents and diseases are still too frequent and their cost in terms of human suffering and economic burden continues to be significant.

According to the 2020/21 Department of Employment and Labour Annual Report, the compensation claims made in relation to OHS in 2019/20 were 82,526 amounting to approximately R3 230 832 373. In the scramble for income, the pressures of increasingly stiff competition due to Covid 19 impact, may tend to deflect the attention from the long-term economic benefits of a safe and healthy working environment.

Some of the most common occupational health and safety hazards in the Gaming industry include: • Second-hand smoke in casinos (smoking areas), which may increase the risk of lung and breast cancer, amongst others.

• Burns - In casinos, burns most commonly occur in preparation or delivery of foods, beverages, or oils since liquid or steam at only 68°C can burn or scald the skin.

• Violence and threat to personal safety - Patrons may become aggressive and agitated toward the staff or other players, potentially leading to assaults and other threats to personal safety.

• Theft & Robberies - Casinos also frequently have large amounts of money onsite increasing the risk of robberies and threaten personal safety.

Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 in South Africa Due to injuries within the workplace, and the increase of litigation and responsibilities of employers, businesses are required by law to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993. The purpose of the Act is to provide for the health and safety of persons at work and for the health and safety of persons in connection with the use of plant and machinery, as well as the protection of persons other than

Honore Gaming’s African Ambitions Aims for South Africa Market Entry CEO and co-founder of Honoré Gaming, Cyril Casanova, shares his thoughts on the challenges posed by the African betting market and how companies need to adapt their products in order to succeed.

A

s an industry-leading provider of interactive sports betting, horse racing and lottery solutions that specialises in emerging markets, Honoré Gaming was undoubtedly one of the first companies to recognise the full potential of online betting in Africa.

However, establishing the brand in the continent certainly didn’t come without its challenges.

The first and most obvious hurdle for Honoré to overcome in Africa was successfully integrating local payment methods. As Casanova, CEO and cofounder of Honoré Gaming recalls: “By far the biggest challenge was ensuring that we were suitably prepared to support local payment methods. Getting access to the right API documentation was in itself a big test.”

These days, Honoré supports over 30 different mobile payment providers in Africa, with the company managing hundreds of thousands of transactions from customers each day. Indeed, the brand has made such strong in-roads in the market that it is the preferred partner of French betting giant, Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU), when it comes to offering online services to African clients.

With the cost of data in the continent also being a potentially prohibitive factor for customers, another challenge for betting companies is that they must find a way to develop lightweight apps that are quick and easy to download. That being said, doing so doesn’t mean they have to sacrifice their product, with Casanova believing the technological proficiency of African markets is currently underestimated.

“There’s a lot of skill and energy in Africa and some countries are progressing in an impressive way” Casanova explains. “If you look at Rwanda, for example, in less than three decades it has become a well-organised and dynamic country.

Betting regulation is also progressing quite well, as we’ve seen from recent cases like Senegal, which started an ambitious plan to regulate its betting market in 2021.”

While Casanova names Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa as the African nations that are currently leading the way in terms of betting regulation, he believes the desire is there from both customers and law-makers alike to ensure that other countries follow suit. This would, as he puts it, foster further investment from European and US companies who feel more at ease with this increased regulation.

In order for them to successfully launch in the continent, Casanova feels it’s essential that operators recognise the importance of tailoring their product to make it locally relevant across different African countries. With Honoré already the leading B2B provider for Frenchspeaking Africa and looking to develop further partnerships in English-speaking Africa too, it’s a topic that he knows plenty about.

“Just as in Europe, Africa contains a large diversity of culture,” states Casanova. “The differences between Senegal and Tanzania are huge – possibly even more so than between Sweden and Greece – so betting operators absolutely need to offer localised products that will be adapted to each market. This challenge could explain why very few companies successfully manage multi-country operations.”

Should betting operators find a way to adjust their product in a way that caters for different nations, however, Casanova believes African betting is ripe for investment. Teaming up with a betting solutions provider such as Honoré that knows the challenges the market presents and already has a footprint in the continent plus the infrastructure to operate could therefore prove to be a significant advantage.

“At Honoré, we believe betting should be thought of as a consumer good like any other,” Casanova concludes. “With betting being more socially accepted in Africa than it is in Europe and a general lack of entertainment locally, the demand is certainly there. Total commitment on the part of top management to making OHS a priority is essential to a successful OHS programme. It is only when management plays a positive role that workers view such programmes as a worthwhile and sustainable exercise. The boardroom has the influence, power and resources to take initiatives and to set the pattern for a safe and healthy working environment.

Middle management and supervisors are obviously the key individuals in such programmes because they are in constant contact with the employees. As safety officers, they act in a staff capacity to help administer safety policy, to provide technical information, to help with training

and to supply programme material.

Employees participation within the organisation is an essential element of prevention of accidents and diseases. Workers should, while performing their work, cooperate in order to enable their employer to fulfil their obligations. Employee participation has been identified as a key precondition of successful OHS management and a major contributing factor in the reduction of occupational diseases and injuries. The full participation of workers in any OHS programmes designed for their benefit will not only ensure the efficacy of such measures but will also make it possible to sustain an acceptable level of health and safety at a reasonable cost.

In conclusion, OHS management should not be treated as a separate process but be integrated into other workplace activities. Its functions and procedures should be embedded in other

management system and business processes.

Penalties for failure to comply with the prescripts of the OHS Act include fines and imprisonment with a criminal record. It is important to know that where non-compliance leads to injury or a casualty, the employer could be held liable.

There are several challenges which may be faced in implementing, promoting, and maintaining health and safety compliance i.e., costs, resources etc, but once the necessary steps are taken to ensure a healthy and safe working environment, there are numerous benefits which can be reaped by both employers and employees, in the form of reduced illness related costs, increased productivity & revenue, and consequently creation of a health and safety culture.

They also booked longer stays with the minimum period being three days.”

He credits good rates and offering value for money as a key factor in the resort’s success.

“We focused on what was within our control, which is how rates became the success story of the month.”

He believes that pent-up demand from the domestic market and easing of Covid-19 restrictions are the other factors which will

help drive the recovery in the domestic tourism sector this year.

It is this drive, passion and focus that fuels a man who is family-orientated and describes his greatest achievement as his four children – one daughter and three sons.

He is a keen sportsman, enjoying running and surfing and in his youth turned out for Mamelodi Sundowns Under 21s. He is a huge supporter of the Brazilians, while his overseas team obviously supports Sundowns locally and internationally, he is an Arsenal fan. In rugby season, Peter’s allegiance is split between the Sharks and the EP Kings.

Musically he is a fan of Mi Casa and lists their song La Vida as his personal favourite, while he has come to love the seaside.

“Anywhere that has gorgeous white sandy beaches.”

Has he never considered other careers?

“Not really. Hospitality offers me a job that

NATIONAL LOTTERY Regulatory Commission is also considering on one hand to enlist the help of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to monitor the payment settlement services to unauthorized lottery operations; and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on another to ban illegal lottery and gambling activities on GSM networks. It will be recalled that Mr Bello Maigari, acting executive secretary, National Lottery Trust Fund (NLTF) has last week raised alarm over the activities of illegal lottery operators.

Maigari, said that there were many lottery operators in the country without a licence, adding that this has resulted to leakages in terms of what they were supposed to remit to the trust fund. “Nigerian government is losing more than one trillion Naira every year because of illegal operators. There are a lot of illegal operators in the industry and these are part of the reasons why there are leakages. Some are conducting this business without being regulated and there are chances that such proceeds will be channelled towards crime, fraud and money laundering,” he said.
