From the Editor: HAVING RETURNED from what was once again a phenomenal ICE London event, and having seen the official attendance numbers once again breaking records at ICE London - a record that has been broken for the 8th consecutive year in a row, it heartens me that this great global gaming brand will be bringing the same success recipe to Africa once again this year with ICE Africa in Johannesburg ( 2 & 3 October 2019) - www.iceafrica.za. com For those that attended ICE Africa’s inaugural event last year, the unprecedented scale and success of the show in drawing operators, suppliers and regulators from across the continent and globally, was apparent. If you did not attend, be sure not to miss out on this year’s event - you can pre-register here to get updates and info: https://www.iceafrica.za.com/pre-register#/ In other African gaming news, Finance Minister Tito Mboweni, in his recent budget speech, signalled government’s intention to revisit a gambling withholding tax - something that was first mooted 8 years ago, but eventually was implemented as an overall 1% gaming levy - while the government’s intentions remain unclear, we should hear more later in the year on what form this proposed tax will take.

SA Budget Speech Holds Surprise Gambling Tax Proposal DURING THE recent 2019 Budget Speech delivered by South African Finance Minister Tito Mboweni, the minister revisited a withholding tax on gambling winnings first mooted 8 years ago. While the proposed new ‘gambling levy’ is not anything new, the tax proposed reflects the pressure government is under to source increased funding for its tax base, as wasteful expenditure and corruption at senior levels of government begin to drain the national fiscus, and place a severe burden on service delivery. In 2012, the government proposed a 15% withholding tax on gambler’s winnings, but eventually decided in the interests of expediency to opt for an

additional 1% levy on a uniform provincial gambling tax base. This additional levy was to be introduced with effect from 1 April 2013. The proposal at that time, was for the 1% levy to fund rehabilitation and awareness programmes to mitigate the negative effects of gambling. A similar levy was to be used to tax the National Lottery. In the 2019 Budget, the Minister announced that government intends to publish draft legislation pertaining to a gambling tax for public comment in 2019. Whether this will take the form of withholding tax - that may be prove too onerous to implement or comply with by casinos and gambling operators, or a simplified version where levies are imposed or increased remains to be seen.

The North West Gambling Board Cracks The Whip On Illegal Operations The South African Police Service working hand in glove with the North West Gambling Board have clamped down on il egal operations in Ikageng Township near Potchefstroom in the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality in the North West. SEVERAL ILLEGAL gambling machines were confiscated by the police. Nine foreign nationals and two South African women were arrested and issued with offence notices of being in possession of illegal gambling machines. One of the concerned parents, Magdeline Mogotsi, maintains that it is predominantly young children and teenagers who are victims to this illegal mode of gambling. “We are happy that these Cherry Masters have been confiscated by the police. Every day after school our children rush to various tuck-shops in our township to play these machines much to the neglect of their school work. We also don’t want to have a situation where by when our children are all grown up, they then become problem gamblers. The raid forms part of a larger strategy by the

Board aimed at thwarting illegal operations in the province. The Board’s Gambling Control manager, Mr Simon Mogapi says there are currently close to sixty known illegal gambling sites operating in the North West.

“Our relationship with the police is bearing tangible fruits. Our strategy is in full swing and we are hopeful that we will be able to deal with this,” Mr Mogapi said. Over thirty million rand in taxes and levies is lost by government due to illegal gambling in the province. Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Board, Mr Jacob Montshioa maintains, not only is the Board losing these monies to unscrupulous people, but the youth become prone to many societal ills such as problem gambling. “We are worried that our youth might be lured into these illegal operations only to be used for other criminal activities such as human and drug trafficking as well as money laundering. We would like to appeal to our communities to be vigilant and help us fight illegal gambling,” Mr Montshioa said.

“There is nobody more important to us than our guests,” says Mike van Vuuren, General Manager of the Boardwalk. “The consumers of our services have helped us hone processes to make it easy and above all, enjoyable, for anyone to spend time at our hotel and leave having experienced the best there is to offer in the hospitality industry.”  He also expresses his gratitude to the public for raising their comments, concerns and suggestions, which are all taken into consideration when deciding on a winner for an award such as this, and of course for all the votes.   Qupe adds that the Lilizela Tourism Awards give people in the hospitality industry an opportunity – and a brilliant opportunity at that – to celebrate excellence, creativity and innovation.  “They give us all an opportunity to learn from each other and to strive to turn an already great industry into an industry that’s truly brilliant.” With this award the Boardwalk is given national recognition which raises its profile in South Africa and around the world.

The world class Mayfair Casino has opened its doors in Mthatha. It is South African development company Billion Group’s latest project, positioned alongside the plush fourstar Mayfair Hotel, which opened its doors last year, complimenting the successful BT Ngebs Shopping Centre – also developed by Billion Group – which opened amid much fanfare in 2015. The precinct is a major business and leisure traveller drawcard for the Eastern Cape’s third-largest city.

Billion Group’s Mayfair Casino Opens in Mthatha - a Jobs Boost for Eastern Cape In a much-needed boost for the Border-Kei region and the Eastern Cape, South Africa’s newest, worldclass casino - the Mayfair Casino, has opened its doors in Mthatha. Having broken ground late last year, the Mayfair Casino is creating hundreds of jobs and bolstering the economy of the Eastern Cape’s third-largest city while also bolstering its appeal to business and leisure travellers.

THE ENTERTAINMENT centre, built by South Africa’s pre-eminent property development company, Billion Group, boasts Mthatha’s only licensed casino as well as top-tier conferencing facilities, bars and restaurants. Having been in the pre-development phase two years, the project broke ground late last year. It forms the latest addition to Billion Group’s existing live-work-play precinct that already houses the successful 60,000m² BT Ngebs City Shopping Centre – which opened in 2015, bringing leading brands to Mthatha for the first time – and the plush, four-star Mayfair Hotel, which opened in 2017. It further continues Billion Group’s stated mission of bringing aspirational developments and world-class facilities and services to areas that would not otherwise have access to them. Billion Group’s latest development a tourism and economic injection for Mthatha region “This project completes the vision we had for a worldclass shopping and entertainment node in Mthatha,” said Billion Group CEO Sisa Ngebulana. “We are really excited to see this casino come to fruition.”

February / March 2019

The 2,000m² facility is expected to have a significant impact on the local economy, with 200 permanent jobs created upon opening. Fifty direct jobs have been created during the project’s construction phase, covering unskilled and fully skilled workers. “It’s a fact that for every job you create, you create three indirect jobs. We are very proud to be bringing employment to this part of the Eastern Cape,” said Dewald van Staden, development director at Billion Group. “It is our intention to employ as many locals as possible, and to manage the process of employing workers across all three categories where possible: skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled.” Three upmarket restaurants within the new complex will span 700m² and offer a choice of a steakhouse, a buffet restaurant or Asian cuisine. To accommodate both large and small conferencing needs, the casino’s modern conference facilities will cater for up to 275 people – an area which can be divided to create two smaller rooms and a private break-away area. The facilities will also feature a bar area and will have access to cuisine from the restaurants.

Ugandan Government Ordered to Suspend Betting & Sports Betting Licenses In what appears to be a mixed and confusing message from the Ugandan Government, the country has stated that it will implement a directive issued by Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni aimed at curbing underage gambling, but one will ultimately target foreign firms operating in the country. UGANDAN FINANCE Minister David Bahati said the directive, in which the president orders that no new gambling licences be issued, and that those that expire should not be renewed, appears to be motivated by Museveni’s belief that “betting companies are distracting young people from work.” In May 2017, the Ugandan government imposed restrictive measures on the use of betting games to limit access for minors, in addition to increasing taxes on the companies in the sector. Uganda has the highest percentage of population under 30 years of age in the world, with 77 per cent in that age group, a figure that contrasts with youth unemployment rate in the country - at 2.91 per cent in 2017. Samuel Mutekanga of Betway, one of the most important sports betting companies in the country, said the decision was “a surprise,” as well as  “a commotion that threatens our investment.” In an apparent move to clarify the directive, and one which heaped further confusion, Finance Minister Matia Kasaija saying that the new policy was specifically targeted at ‘foreign’ sports betting companies that channel revenue from their local betting operations back to their base of operations outside Uganda. Kasaija said the country was “not banning gaming. We’re saying this activity should be limited to only

12 I Gaming For Africa I

February / March 2019

Ugandans. We have said that licensees that are running will not be renewed and new ones will not be issued to foreigners because we’ve discovered so much of our money is being exported through that gaming thing which as far as I am concerned has little value to the economy.” Bahati said the government’s aim was “strengthening the regulatory framework” by reviewing the betting sector in order to “regulate the number of betting companies because there are complaints that they are mushrooming everywhere.” Bahati said the government would use its review “to determine how many [betting operators] to license and where they should operate across the country.” Bahati offered no timeline for when this review might conclude but did say an official statement would be issued “sooner than later.” While Bahati’s comments make it sound as if only retail betting operators are facing the axe, he confirmed that online betting operators would be included in the government’s review. Betting operators protested that if President Musuveni’s primary concern was betting’s effect on Ugandan youth, then simply transferring their activity to Ugandan betting operators wouldn’t do much to accomplish this alleged goal.

Scientific Games’ Director of Product Management of the Gaming Division for EMEA, Michael Lamers and Wavell Alexander, Senior Director SG Africa, pictured with Jin Ji Bao Xi - SG’s latest link product.

Scientific Games is ‘EVOLVING ENTERTAINMENT’ The company is creating a global experiential entertainment ecosystem AT ICE London in February, Gaming for Africa met with Michael Lamers, Scientific Games’ Director of Product Management of the Gaming Division for EMEA, to chat about the future offerings from the company allied under a central new philosophy and how this would benefit the African market. “Evolving Entertainment is more of our positioning strategy,” says Michael Lamers, “allowing us to serve the market with a single ecosystem that brings together products from all the companies in Scientific Games, instead of operating in silos as separate companies who ultimately have the same message.” Scientific Games’ new combined strategy came together last year with the acquisition of SG Digital in 2018 along with Don Best Sports, which adds Managed Trading Services and completes the company’s full service sports betting solution. Bringing all the various gaming elements of Scientific Games together, the Company will provide a 360-degree offering to clients. “On the EGM side, we’re bringing the best games to the market, and using ICE as an opportunity to launch what is the best link product in the world to the EMEA market. Jin Ji Bao Xi™ (JJBX) was launched in Asia in March 2018 and is currently the top performing link for Scientific Games in Asia across all denominations,” says Michael. “Comparing the first 12 months after Jin Ji Bao Xi’s (JJBX) launch to that of the first 12 months of the DFDC launch, JJBX has out-sold the DFDC launch by three times,” says Michael to underscore the

phenomenal success with which the new product is being received. “What’s most important is that when doing our performance research, Jin Ji Bao Xi was placed in venues that have Duo Fu Duo Cai, to see how the two co-exist in the same venue, the results were amazing,” says Michael. “Jin Ji Bao Xi doesn’t cannibalize Duo Fu Duo Cai – in fact, the two products complement each other rather than compete.” “Good news for African casino operators is that JJBX is headed to Africa within the next month or two,” says Wavell Alexander, Senior Director SG Africa. Continental Africa vs Southern Africa: Scientific Games has some promising talks and projects in progress with African operators who are interested in our table game utilities and looking to invest in what we have to offer. “There is a misconception that smaller African countries do not have resources to stay on top of the latest develop-ments in the gaming industry, but people will be surprised to know that they in fact do have a strong market for new games and products which will only grow as their market continues to expand.” “Africa has changed from being a market of predominantly used games to recognizing the value of new games and staying on top of all the latest technology and new titles that are available in the market. Operators are now more willing than ever to make the investment and Scientific Games is looking forward to being part of the change of landscape that the African operators are going through,” says Wavell.

The Vision is Simple and Unwavering: Put the Player First! DR Gaming Technology™s Chief Executive Officer and co-founder Jurgen De Munck and Managing Director: Africa, Charl Geyser discuss how it all started, as well as the Company’s showing at ICE London. Gaming for Africa: DRGT™ was established in 2005. Jurgen you’ve been there from the start, and Charl you’ve been a part of the business for almost two thirds of that time, can you tell me how it started for you both? Jurgen: As you know Roy, DRGT™ literally started in a garage. We began with a relatively simple idea then, one that very quickly became our vision, and I guess our entire development mantra: ‘…to develop and deliver the best technology that puts the player first.’ To fully execute this though, Michiel (van Dam, CTO and co-founder) and I realised that we needed to not only provide operators with cutting edge technology that was robust and user-friendly, but we also needed to ensure that we had the people and the means to support those products, and more importantly our customers, the operators who use them. Charl: I left Aristocrat after 13 years’ service in 2007, dabbled in running my own pubs (with LPMs, of course) for a couple of years and ultimately decided to get back into gaming equipment distribution in 2009. My involvement with DRGT™ dates back almost a decade, to when I 16 I Gaming For Africa I

February / March 2019

took on the distribution of the then SiP product; I met Jurgen and Michiel when they purchased SiP in late 2011. At the time we met, I had secured an EGM distribution contract, and was looking for a jackpot service provider to meet a local tender opportunity. In DRGT™ not only did I find a great jackpot solution, but in my view the most powerful, cost effective and user-friendly casino management system I had ever come across. I firmly believed that I had found the proverbial ‘goose that lays the golden egg’ – the perfect disruptor, the product that I could really launch my newly established Simplicit-e Gaming Solutions off of. Roll ahead to 2018, and Simplicit-e Gaming solutions is now DRGT™ Africa, a joint venture, as you know, between DRGT™ and South African investment holding company Grand Parade Investments Limited. Gaming for Africa: DRGT™ celebrated a decade of successfully operating its management system and WAPs in Switzerland in 2018, you and your team must be very proud of the success. Jurgen: We are, very proud. Since installing our first system in Grand Casino Bern in 2008, we have expanded that footprint to over 10 casinos; what remains encouraging is that Continued to page 18

Charl: Our most successful slots product is our SunStriker wide-area progressive, it was the 2nd in a series of three bespoke WAPs developed for Sun International. Since inception, it remains the top performing jackpot in Africa, I’m also proud to say that since our initial installation of the 1st of these three WAPs over 5 years ago, there has never been a single second of downtime. Off the back of our slots success we developed BlackJack11’s, a fast and easy to learn tables jackpot side bet game. Internationally the game is installed at the Hippodrome in London, Monterey in Mexico, Casino Platino in the Dominican Republic, Richard’s Casino in Peru, as well as a number of casinos in Belgium and Cyprus. On the African continent specifically, we have BlackJack11’s installed at a number of Sun International and Peermont casinos in South Africa, at Grand Kaz in the Seychelles, and are due to undertake our initial Tsogo Sun installation at Monteca18 I Gaming For Africa I February / March 2019

sino within the next month or two. We are also busy expanding our current number of tables at Sun International and Peermont due to the game’s solid performance, in fact at present it is arguably the most profitable tables side-bet game on the African continent, and the fastest growing one too; our most recent installation was at Sun City in January. Gaming for Africa: Technology and innovation are the backbone of DRGT™s success, how do you retain your competitive edge? Jurgen: Michiel along with our R&D Directors and our Global Product team drive our product development and its associated time lines. Without divulging too much, I think it is safe to say, as I have said on many previous occasions, consumers in general (and this includes gaming ‘players’) are becoming more and more demanding of tailored solutions and ease of use, and less and less tolerant of extended time lines or service intervals. With this in mind, we need to develop quicker, install quicker and be able to provide operators with technology to engage quicker and more directly with their players. Products like our drMediaManager, drScreen video and TV streaming functionality and our ability to present jackpot and other media to the top screens of EGMs talk directly to this ‘shift’. Gaming for Africa: This leads to my next question: You exhibited at ICE London again earlier this month, how did things go? Charl: The key to our success remains our core product offering driven at present by our Slots and Tables Management System, our BlackJack11’s Tables Jackpot game,

our world-leading range of slots jackpots and our revolutionary drScreen player tracking interface and world-leading 8.8” drScreenUltra player tracking display that I referred to above. These were all again very well received in London. Gaming for Africa: Notwithstanding slots and tables jackpot success, what are the advantages of either upgrading to, or installing DRGT™s systems? Jurgen: Advances in technology allowed us to provide a truly serverless offering. It also afforded us the ability to provide more functionality than existing legacy systems, and furthermore ensured that we were able to install our product extremely quickly. A case in point was our installation at Grand Casino Basel, where we completed the entire change over in a single day during normal operating hours. Gaming for Africa: Considering the above, does your system operate on all gaming devices? Charl: Absolutely, we’re able to operate our systems and jackpots on literally any slot machine, as long as it operates using a legislated protocol. What I’m referring to here are the likes of SAS, ASP, NSW and GRIPS; this flexibility has been extremely advantageous, and continues to drive much of our African expansion. Gaming for Africa: In closing, for those Casinos wanting a new system or jackpot

solution, why should they consider DRGT™? Jurgen: My answer here is not a new one: I think in any industry, whether it be product or service related, the customer (and in our case ‘the player’) must come first. Our technology solutions afford operators the functionality and products to do just that! Charl: I agree 100%; if an operator is looking to replace his/her existing management system, upgrade part of it, or is in the market for a system for a new casino, bingo or street market development, call us! We will also gladly assist in designing and proposing jackpot solutions that are guaranteed to surprise and delight players, and add excitement to any game floor. The above said, I can also promise DRGT™s full commitment to finding a solution that works, is robust, reliable and cost-effective, and focussed wholeheartedly on ’putting the player first.’

ALFASTREET @ ICE Considered as the world leader in Multi-Gaming innovation, Alfastreet once again dazzled at the recent ICE Show in London. Omega Gaming represented Alfastreet for their African and Indian Ocean Island customers. ON DISPLAY, were the iconic R8 and Lucky-8 Roulette Multi-Terminals, which still dominate much of the world automated roulette installations. Also making a statement was the Multi-Touch Roulette, an 8-Player table which provides a very near “live game” experience. Always a show stopper, the Royal Derby horse racing machine provided a lot of entertainment. The Alfastreet range of stand-alone terminals is impressive. On display were the Felix-T terminals, the new generation 27” display gaming platform, the WIKI 32” display terminal, a world favourite, the Bar-Top terminal and the VIP Terminal. The VIP Terminal was also a show stopper with extraordinary interest being shown. It is effectively a Lazy-Boy chair with a 27” monitor, providing for an extremely comfortable and immersive gaming experience. Alfastreet is regarded as the industry leader in Stadium Gaming. The impressive line-up of terminals described above all connect seamlessly to the array of Live, Automated and Virtual games available. Games include Roulette, Blackjack, Baccarat, Horse Racing, Poker, Big Wheel and a host more. What makes the Alfastreet gaming experience unique is the simultaneous play option, where a player can choose multiple games on a split screen and play up to 32 games at the same time . . . perhaps

2 or 4 being more manageable. Another hit at the show was the Lucky Number Jackpot side-bet on roulette. This 3-level jackpot is completely configurable and is based on the wheel result, therefor not requiring a second RNG. The show was a huge success and the booth was arguably the best stand at the show from a design, technology and innovation perspective.

Concerto upright & Slant One of the most exciting new additions to Konami’s Concerto game library is a symbol-driven linked progressive game called Money Galaxy™. This year at ICE, the series featured three custom base game themes: Radiant Witch™, Dragon’s Return™, and Pharaoh’s Power™. All themes are unique multidenom releases—with original math and mechanics— but share the same Money Galaxy progressive feature. roughout primary play, any three or more bonus prize symbols appearing with a wild symbol on reel 5 trigger the Money Galaxy feature. As it transitions to the feature, those positions become fixed while the remaining positions transform to independently-spinning reels filled with bonus prize amounts, progressives, and blank spaces. Players are awarded three spins on the bonus reel frame and if all positions are filled with prizes, they advance to a new round and increasing potential progressive awards, up to the ultimate linked Maxi jackpot.

Concerto upright & Slant This 5-reel game has an enchanting hazel-eyed mystic as its hero character. She acts as the reel 5 trigger symbol during the Money Galaxy Feature and provides guidance through the feature by resetting the available spins with her magic orb. During the free games, Radiant Witch™ removes all lower-value card symbols, leaving only high-value picture symbols and prize symbols, with a greater chance at the Money Galaxy Feature.

Concerto upright & Slant Konami’s new Golden Blocks™ linked progressive series infuses golden grandeur in every spin with symbol-driven jackpot features and instant credit symbol prizes. In the debut title Golden Blocks Princess Majesty™, Golden Blocks randomly appear across all reels and any eight or more that land trigger up to 20 free spins on the Golden Block Bonus! Golden Blocks become fixed, while jackpot orbs, credit prizes and blank spaces spin overtop. Any three matching orbs award the corresponding jackpot.

Concerto upright & Slant Sun Da Sheng™ is another Golden Blocks series featured at ICE 2019. Similar to Princess Majesty, gold block symbols randomly appear across the reels throughout the primary game and award the feature if eight or more blocks land. During the Golden Blocks feature, every credit prize that lands is instantly awarded and jackpot orbs are collected and tallied in the top screen. Any three matching orbs award the corresponding jackpot, and multiple jackpots can be awarded in the same bonus.

Konami’s popular SeleXion is made its return to ICE 2019, backed by the industry’s most agile and customizable multigame technology. Konami showcased SeleXion on Concerto upright and Concerto Slant, as well as 43” single-screen Concerto Crescent and Concerto Stack, with more than 50 fantastic themes. Operators can custom select up a mix of game themes on a single machine, as well as a progressive bonus. SeleXion’s robust processing power gives players the fastest game change speed and an optimal interface to enjoy a fun mix of their favorite games in one spot.

With a standard cabinet width, four-times the pixel depth of standard HD, and leading library of 4K-resolution game themes, Konami’s new KX 43™ is designed as a trim-fit champion for any area of the floor. Its 43-inch, edge-lit portrait screen carries custom-programed graphic interaction with the LCD button panel, which is inlaid a relaxed slant top. KX 43 includes the core comforts and conveniences for today’s players, including USB charging port, double cup holders, and dual classic bash buttons. All are developed in 4K Ultra HD for graphics that catch attention and celebrate wins with stunning excitement.

Emperors Palace ‘Garden of Lights’ raises R1.4million for Charity Emperors Palace has wrapped up yet another successful edition of its annual Garden of Lights, with proceeds from the 2018/2019 event amounting to an incredible R1.4-million. From the R1.4 million raised from tickets sales, R400 000 was donated to the Reach for a Dream foundation and R350 000 each was donated to the Peermont Childrens and Education Trusts. In celebration of the resort’s 20th birthday, a further R10 000 was donated to 20 worthy charities that were nominated by 20 Emperors Palace employees. “THIS YEAR, we welcomed over 100 000 excited children, mums, dads, couples, friends and family from across Gauteng, who came to see the dazzling array of lights at Emperors Palace,” says Clive Tavener, General Manager for Emperors Palace. “This amounted to R1.4 million in proceeds from ticket sales, which we have donated to charitable and educational causes for communities in need.” The Garden of Lights is a magical event that lit up Gauteng skies over the festive season for the 11th consecutive year. It was created to spread merriment and festive cheer through spectacular light displays, colourful characters, fun fair rides and delicious food offerings, and took place in the perfectly manicured gardens of the five-star Peermont D’oreale Grande hotel at Emperors Palace.

“The Garden of Lights is our way of bringing back the days when mom and dad would bundle the whole family into the car to go and see the Christmas lights in town,” says Tavener. “Every year, we get to see the delighted smiles on the faces of children and parents alike, as they walk into gardens and experience the incredible light displays. Honestly, for us, there’s no better feeling than being able to bring people that kind of joy.”  Not only were families mesmerised by the spectacular lights display, children also had an opportunity to take pictures with Santa Claus, the Enchanted Fairy, Gift the Present, the Gingerbread Man, Frosty the Snowman, Santa’s Elves and Emperors Palace’s very own beautiful Garden Princess.

By using biometric data in the gaming industry, NOVOMATIC is setting new trends in customer convenience and measures to prevent gaming addiction. NOVOMATIC is thus one of the first gaming technology groups worldwide to have created the technical prerequisites for the introduction of a biometrics-based access and payment system. At the same time, NOVOMATIC’s sports betting activities are to be expanded in the US. The NOVOMATIC Group has seen strong growth in recent times, primarily through strategic acquisitions. The company now has 300 shareholdings, around 220 of which are consolidated in the balance sheet of NOVOMATIC AG. “Following the strong growth of recent years, we will continue to focus on consolidation and increasing synergies between the companies in 2019,” highlighted Mr. Neumann. Sun International first in Africa to stop sending waste to landfill Sun International has become the first company in Africa to receive a prestigious Green Building Council of South Africa’s (GBCSA) Net Zero Waste rating for an ambitious recycling effort at its Wild Coast Sun property. THE AWARD is the first of its kind in the country, and although the Wild Coast Sun was already sending zero waste to landfill by the end of 2016, the verification process required one full year’s data before it could be certified. The GBCSA completed the criteria process at the end of 2017, after which an external audit of the data was done in 2018 by professional environmental consultancy company, GCX. To be considered for the award, an operational waste and materials management plan needed to be introduced and implemented on site. The Wild Coast Sun had to submit to regular audits and, to be effective in the long term, educational, workshops and seminars were used to create awareness among staff. Sun International first introduced plans to eliminate waste sent to landfill in 2015, and will aim to achieve zero waste to landfill at all of its South African properties. It aims to be a leader in waste management in the local hospitality industry by encouraging suppliers, contractors and concessionaires to introduce similar waste saving initiatives at their operations. Since January 2017, the Wild Coast Sun has recycled 600 tons of waste annually. Not only will this help to protect the pristine Wild Coast environment, it is also creating jobs for the local community. The project now sustains two permanent enterprise development projects. Gayo enterprises, headed up by Aben Mbabala, employs seven people who are responsible for collecting and separating food waste, cartridges, paper, cardboard and batteries. Vuka Uzenzele Trading is managed by Alex Nzimakwe with five employees who produce compost from food waste and garden cuttings, and plant and manage the new organic vegetable gardens. The compost yard covers approximately 70 meters and produced 187 tons of compost during 2018. This translated into a saving of R430 000 for compost, which the resort had to previously buy to maintain its golf course and gardens. Organic vegetables grown in the garden which is cultivated with the additional compost being produced, now saves the hotel and restaurants approximately R10 000 per month in produce costs. Excess vegetables are also donated to local schools for their soup kitchens, with one school alone feeding as many as 900 children a day. Most plastic waste is recycled, while other used materials such as hotel furniture, computers, appliances and linen are donated to needy local communities and organisations such as hospitals. Non-recyclable waste is used to manufacture eco-bricks by the unit’s appointed recycling service provider based in Port Edward. This in turn has created further jobs in the area to deal with the approximately 40 tons of waste that the Wild Coast Sun used to send to landfill every month. In 2018, Wild Coast Sun was also the recipient of the Eco-Logic Recycling and Waste Management Award. Speaking about the award, Sonja Stroud, Safety, Health and Environmental Officer said: “Our approach to sustainability is holistic. It is based on the need to protect our natural environment and to save our natural resources, so eliminating the waste we send to landfill is a natural progression of this strategy. To achieve our zero waste goal we had to scrutinise every element of our operation at the Wild Coast. The first step was to get rid of skips and compactors and to sort the waste on site. Now, recycling and repurposing waste lessens our environmental footprint and also assists people living in the communities we do business in through donations of physical products, excess food from our gardens and the creation of new business and employment opportunities.” For visitors to the Wild Coast Sun resort the benefit lies in being able to eat fresh organically grown vegetables in our restaurant and hotel, and in knowing that not a single waste product discarded by them will go to landfill. Nigerian Government Fury as Illegal Operators Siphon Off a Trillion Naira Annually Vows to Stamp out Illegals The Nigerian Federal Government has started moves aimed at putting an end to the activities of il egal lottery operators, which leave losses amounting to more than one tril ion Naira annually. To this end, the federal government through the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) is to police unauthorized online games.

SAVE THE DATE

NATIONAL LOTTERY Regulatory Commission is also considering on one hand to enlist the help of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to monitor the payment settlement services to unauthorized lottery operations; and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on another to ban illegal lottery and gambling activities on GSM networks. It will be recalled that Mr Bello Maigari, acting executive secretary, National Lottery Trust Fund (NLTF) has last week raised alarm over the activities of illegal lottery operators. Maigari, said that there were many lottery operators in the country without a licence, adding that this has resulted to leakages in terms of what they were supposed to remit to the trust fund. “Nigerian government is losing more than one trillion Naira every year because of illegal operators. There are a lot of illegal operators in the industry and these are part of the reasons why there are leakages. Some are conducting this business without being regulated and there are chances that such proceeds will be channelled towards crime, fraud and money laundering,” he said.
