“Working abroad came with a lot of (welcome) challenges. These made me realise that it is crucial to understand the organization of the healthcare system in which you operate, and what factors determine health-seeking behaviour, in order to be able to provide proper care. My future career goal is to work in the field of health development aid and to advocate for safe motherhood and equal gender rights in low- and middle-income countries. I am following the part-time MIH program at KIT. During the NTC (core course) I gained knowledge in many different fields (from tropical diseases to healthcare systems). My classmates had different nationalities and professional backgrounds which led to very interesting discussions. It is great that the MIH program is flexible so I can combine it with work and adjust the programme so it fits my future career goals.”

As a nurse in the field of migrants health I worked for the UN Migration Agency (IOM) in many countries, among others Ethiopia, Jordan, Kenya, Haiti and Libya. After 15 years I took the decision to study a Master’s programme to broaden my knowledge. My enrolment at the KIT and the Master in International Health (MIH) helped matching my extensive field experience with the theory.

I followed the core course of this Master’s programme at KIT in Amsterdam, and the rest via distance learning. After my graduation I rejoined IOM in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh with Rohingya refugees as the health programme manager. I benefited tremendously from the knowledge acquired during the MIH. This Master’s programme empowered me with the knowledge to perform better.”
