Introducing the Design Collective, a visionary collection for the Hospitality market from Royal Thai.
Featuring unique designs created by three emerging artists from around the world—Gaëlle Villedary of France, PHUNK of Singapore, and an anonymous artist based in Australia—this collection explores the traditional boundaries of hospitality design with progressive creative perspective.
From the graphic art series Empire of Dreams by PHUNK to Archipelago Villedary’s ethereal meditation on the interaction between humans and nature—and linear abstractions of the pattern study entitled LOST, this collection celebrates an innovative approach to traditional design for the hospitality market.
Each artist’s creative series showcases a range of colours, textures, and patterns, resulting in a collection that engages, challenges, and inspires.
At Royal Thai, we strongly believe that combining talents and ideas is better than one singular point of view. That’s why we collaborate with artists from around the world, and a wide variety of disciplines, to create truly custom carpet designs you won’t find anywhere else. “There is a world beneath us—hardly accessible, unknown— which has amazing properties, between mysterious engulfed worlds and scientific truths. It covers most of our planet. The intention is to bring this invisible world to life.”
Inspired by the world beneath us, the Archipelago series celebrates the magical submarine universe, in all its evocative glory.
Drawing inspiration from macro–and microscopic worlds, Villedary’s series reflects the beauty of biology combined with underwater graphics of coral, algae, reef life, and jellyfish. To create this complexand ethereal collection, she first sketched the designs by hand before digitally layering her creations and then contouring the final product. The resulting designs are full of colour, gorgeous repetition nuance–and foremost, life.
Born in 1976, Gaëlle Villedary was raised in France, Cameroon, and Morocco.
After studying Applied Arts at Marc Bloch University in Strasbourg, Villedary collaborated with Hatim Elmrinito launch Green Object Studio in 2001. After relocating to Marseilles in 2007, she trained as a precious metal artist as well as an educator, qualifying her to teach and share her knowledge of design and visual arts.
Villedary presented her first solo exhibition in 2009.
The following year she exhibited at the Gallery Susini in Aix-en-Provence, among others, and participated in the International Miniature Art Biennial in Quebec. In Canada, she was nominated for several awards and received a grant from the city of Toulouse to display the Jungle of Genes at the La Novela festival.
PHUNK
Graphic Art Collective, Singapore
“In the Empire of Dreams, you are the King of its destiny”
Empire of Dreams is a celebration of those who embrace the state of reverie. This collection is inspired by nonconformists and rule-breakers; those who invent and imagine; dare to heal, to love, explore, create, and inspire. These dreamers push boundaries and change the world.
To create this series for the Design Collective, PHUNK revisited its own early days of dreaming and experimentation with visuals and digital design, forming an offering that is characterised by fresh artistic vision and innovative techniques. The resulting designs feature thematic journeys that are as complex as any work of art in literature, music, or drama.
PHUNK is a Singapore-based contemporary art and design collective founded in 1994 by LaSalle College of the Arts students Alvin Tan, Melvin Chee, Jackson Tan, and William Chan.
Blending and interpreting a variety of influences into creations that reflect its multicultural identity, PHUNK challenges conventional notions of the artist and commercial design studio by focusing on new approaches to visual expression.
With clients such as Nike, Nokia, MTV, Daimler Chrysler, Comme des Garçons, Levi’s, and Tiger Beer, PHUNK projects span the worlds of art, design, publishing, fashion, music, film, and interactive media.
In addition to lecturing and exhibiting across the globe, PHUNK has been featured in international publications and achieved various honors, including Singapore’s 2007 Designer of the Year Award.

“Push the boundaries and then become lost in the possibilities.”
Inspired by pattern consistencies across different histories and cultures, LOST explores emotional responses to repetition on small and grand scales.
This body of work was created with the concept of interconnectedness in mind. The artist first assembled a group of drawings and paintings that examined the similarities and dissonance between lineal patterns, referencing cartography, historical textiles, and cultural examples. Woven together, these references form contemporary narratives of navigation, influence, and reflection.
Of the 20 pieces created for this series by an Australian artist who wishes to remain anonymous, each allows the observer to be at once confronted with a holistic perspective and aims, as well as its singular executions. The end result is an immersive experience that is at once transportive andgrounding; asserting both likeness and unlikeness, history and future.
