Costa Linda is located on Eagle Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on Aruba. Safe and sheltered, its cool white sands, shallow waters and plentiful shade make it ideal for children and it is also popular with local families.

Shade huts, sun loungers and beach chairs are available on a first come first serve basis for the use of registered Costa Linda members and guests from 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Remember to take all your belongings with you when you leave the beach. You’ll find a complete list of beach and pool rules in the Resort tips section of this magazine, please take a few moments to read them.

Eagle Beach is a public beach and there are no lifeguards so you swim at your own risk.

Spend hours of watery fun in the resort pool enjoying organized activities such as volleyball and pool aerobics or simply relax pool side and cool off in the Jacuzzis after your sunbathing session. Small children will love the kids pool. It is suitable for tots up to six years old.

Pool and Jacuzzi hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Please abide by the pool rules and help us keep the pool area clean.

Keep up with your daily workout at the Fitness Center where you’ll find a variety of exercise machines to help you stay in shape. The gym staff is on hand to help you and provide for your every need.

It is easy to get carried away when sunbathing at the beginning of your vacation, especially if you are from a cold northern climate. Don’t overdo it, painful sunburn will spoil your fun. Take care and always use sun block with the SPF (at least 15) suitable for your skin type. Choose environmentally friendly sun products and apply regularly after going in the water.

If you are going snorkeling it is a good idea to wear a T-shirt. The hottest time of the day is between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and remember that you can still get burnt even when it is cloudy or breezy.

The Ultimate Souvenir – Aruba-Made Twin boutiques called Aruba Cosecha sell only made-in-Aruba artisan goods.

By Rona Gindin It has happened to all of us. While souvenir shopping while on vacation, we’ve picked up a bracelet, or mug, or sculpture bearing the name of the destination…then spotted tiny words that said something like Made in China.

The folks behind Aruba’s tourism efforts want your souvenirs to be Aruban, and they’ve taken a big leap to make that happen.

First, the Department of Culture set high standards for what artisans can claim is Aruba-made, carefully handing out SEYO “seals of craftsmanship.”

The criteria include craftsmanship, originality, esthetics, material use, local identity and commercial value.

Now a non-profit group has opened two stores that carry only items crafted right on One Happy Island. The boutiques, called Aruba Cosecha, are located on a busy shopping block of the capital Oranjestad and in the edgier, arts-heavy district called San Nicolas.

“Everything in both stores is created on the island,” says Director Joanne Dirksz. “We represent about 30 artists at any one time.”

The works are of many media. Take home an Aruba memory via a copper ring, or maybe a necklace made from glass beads blown nearby or from recycled Argentinean leather. Look for sculptures emerging from driftwood, most likely from kwihi trees (also called divi-divi trees). You’ll find paintings and handbags, mosaics and ceramics, even belts made from old car tires.

One of the most coveted lines of goods is miniature houses. Aruba’s countryside is called the cunuku, and Naomi Landgraf painstakingly puts together exact clay miniatures of cunuku houses, down to the front doors and paint colors. Purchasers receive the original house’s address so they can go see the inspiration.

Cosecha means “harvesting,” Dirksz explains. “We see our products as a harvest from the locals here in Aruba. It’s symbolic and reflects the diversity of Aruban heritage.”

The stores are managed by Fundacion C.R.A.F.T., the letters roughly standing for the Dutch words meaning “Centre for Reinforcement of Artisanal Craftsmanship and the Formation of Talent.”

Artists have to jump through some important hoops before Cosecha will display their wares. “They have to go to the Department of Culture, which has a commission,” Dirksz says. “Then they have to go through a procedure to

prove that their artwork meets strict requirements.” Once approved, they receive a seal number.

The artists do not have to be Aruba natives; the island is way too international for that.

They do have to live on the island, though.

And, their artwork needn’t be from 100 percent Aruban materials. That standard would be rough to meet, since many items – even the materials needed to make glass beads – are not produced on Aruba.

If you’d like to make your own souvenir, Aruba Cosecha can meet that desire too. In its larger San Nicolas store, a classroom hosts workshops regularly. Most are aimed at tourists or locals who want to make their own mementos. Yet more are geared for children, groups of friends such as bachelorette parties, and colleagues on a teambuilding adventure. They workshops are taught by local artists. More classes are being created specifically for visitors. Tour operators may soon schedule Cosecha craft time into day trips.

Eager to attract more visitors, the Aruba Cosecha folks are actively recruiting artists. “Most have others jobs and create this art as a hobby,” Dirksz notes. “Now that we have two stores, we need a lot of art to fill the shelves.”

Aruba Cosecha helps artists make money. “Most don’t have time to sell their products themselves,” she says, noting that they’re delighted to have this non-profit handle the retail end of their art endeavors. “Many will come into one of the stores once a month to do a demonstration or meet the tourists.”

The tourists, too, are pleased. “They tell me they’re happy they can buy local products rather than something mass-produced,” Dirksz reports.

El Máximo Suvenir – Hecho en Aruba Las boutiques gemelas llamadas Aruba Cosecha sólo venden productos artesanales hechos en Aruba.

Por Rona Gindin Nos ha pasado a todos. Cuando hacemos las compras de recuerdos durante las vacaciones, hemos recogido una pulsera, o una taza, o la escultura que lleva el nombre del destino... entonces encontramos palabras diminutas manchadas que dijeron algo como Hecho en China.

La gente detrás de los esfuerzos turísticos de Aruba quiere que sus recuerdos sean Arubianos, y han dado un gran salto para que eso suceda.

En primer lugar, el Departamento de Cultura establece altos estándares para lo que los artesanos pueden afirmar que su artesanía es hecha en Aruba, entregando cuidadosamente el SEYO “sellos de artesanía.” Los criterios incluyen artesanía, originalidad, estética, uso de materiales, identidad local y valor comercial.

Ahora un grupo sin fines de lucro ha abierto dos tiendas que llevan sólo artículos hechos a la correctamente en La Isla Feliz. Las boutiques, llamadas Aruba Cosecha, se encuentran en un bullicioso distrito comercial de la capital, Oranjestad, y en el distrito más pintoresco de San Nicolás.

“Todo en ambas tiendas se crea en la isla”, dice la directora Joanne Dirksz.

“Representamos a unos 30 artistas en cualquier momento”.

Las obras son de muchos materiales. Llevar a casa una memoria de Aruba a través de un anillo de cobre, o tal vez un collar hecho de cuentas de vidrio soplado o de cuero reciclado argentino. Busque las esculturas que emergen de trozos de madera que flotaban en el mar, muy probablemente de los árboles del kwihi (también llamados árboles divi-divi). Encontrará pinturas y bolsos, mosaicos y cerámicas, incluso cinturones hechos de neumáticos de automóviles viejos.

LEGAL MATTERS Access to the Costa Linda Beach Resort is controlled and all owners and guests must register at the Front desk upon arrival. The Resort assumes no responsibility for those not properly registered.

The use of resort facilities is reserved exclusively for Costa Linda owners and guests.

Costa Linda is a family resort and swearing, topless and nude bathing, drugs and public drunkenness are not tolerated.

Please take note that the legal drinking age on Aruba is 18 and an ID is required.

No loud music or parties after 11 p.m. The Board reserves the right to assess a fine of up to one week’s maintenance fee if the resort regulations are violated.

YOUR RESORT HOME When you stay at the Resort, you are not a guest in a hotel, you own your suite during the interval purchased. The Resort is not a hotel, nor is it managed as such. Accepting this fundamental difference is essential to understand why compensation is not permitted for any minor inconvenience you might encounter during your visit.

As in your home, unexpected problems can occur. If a drain clogs or the safe will not open, call the Front desk for assistance. You can be assured the matter will be taken care of as quickly as possible, often within minutes.

Furthermore, situations sometimes occur as a result of miscommunication or human error. Accidents will happen. Rather than expecting some form of complimentary compensation, a sincere apology from Front Desk personnel should suffice.

Guests who insist upon complimentary compensation for inconvenience or honest mistakes must understand and accept the difference between hotel and Resort Management. Unlike hotels, Costa Linda Beach Resort is nonprofit.

Owner dues cover operating expenses only. There are no funds to cover free dinners, extra nights, or gifts. The cost of such compensatory awards would come directly from owner dues.

Costa Linda Beach Resort is your vacation home. If a problem arises please report it. Staff members will do everything possible to make your stay pleasant and comfortable, but they are not permitted to offer, nor allowed to give, free gifts. You can expect an apology for an inconvenience, but not a reward.

Reglamento de albercas y playa

• Do not reserve more than 1 chickee hut per room.

• Favor de no reservar más de una palapa por habitación.

• All chaise lounges will be available for use from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on a first come, first serve basis. The hotel reserves the right to remove belongings in the event a chaise lounge and/or a hut is left unattended for more than two hours. The removed items will be held at the Towel Hut and can be retrieved between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

• Todos los camastros están disponibles de 7 a.m. a 6 p.m. según el orden de llegada. El hotel se reserva el derecho de remover sus pertenencias en el caso de que un camastro o palapa sea abandonada por más de dos horas.

• You may sign out towels with the room keys. Only one towel may be issued per person per day and you should return them before 6 p.m. to obtain a clean towel in the morning. The penalty is $15 US if you misplace a towel. All towels must be returned prior to check out. The Towel Hut is located in front of the kiddies playground and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ext. 7414.

• Proper attire is required (swimming wear only). No nude or topless sunbathing by the pool or on the beach.

• Electrical appliances and radios are not permitted in the pool area.

• Glassware, coolers, food and drink are not allowed in the pool area or the Jacuzzi. No bottles on the beach.

• Do not run or engage in horseplay, no jumping or diving into the pool.

• Running jumps from the waterfall platform or from poolside into the pool is prohibited. Jumping from a stationary position is permitted.

• The Jacuzzi is not suitable for the very young or elderly, persons suffering from diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure, pregnant women, persons under the influence of alcohol or medication which can cause drowsiness. No children under the age of 15 years are permitted.

• There is a 10-minute limit for each Jacuzzi.

• Do not put soap in the Jacuzzi.

FINE FOOD IN AN OFFBEAT NEIGHBORHOOD

You’ll find pampering, fine wines and international flavors – plus air conditioning – at O’Neil Caribbean Kitchen in San Nicholas.

By Rona Gindin It’s like an oasis, O’Neil Caribbean Kitchen.

With its upholstered chairs, stone accents and criss-cross wooden wine racks, this restaurant would blend into a typical Dawn Beach hotel or Oranjestad shopping street. Yet this air-conditioned escape is an unexpected locale: up-and-coming San Nicolas. As such, its chef-made foods, table-service format, patio seating and quiet second-floor lounge create a dining destination that stands alone.

Islanders looking for another taste of home, as well as visitors seeking a Caribbean culinary adventure, might choose saltfish fritters for their entrée.

These golden nuggets begin with dried local fish. They’re rehydrated overnight, coated with seasoned flour laced with leavening, and brought to a sizzling finish.

Outside seating is ideal for cocktails overlooking some of San Nicolas’s renowned murals, including one of a beach. Upstairs, a quiet lounge invites lingering over glass tables and bamboo chairs. It’s known for the Charlie Black, made from Dewar’s White Label whiskey, dark rum and coffee liqueur. It’s named for partner/brother Errol, whose nickname is Charlie. Plus, a private dining room is ideal for weddings and other celebrations.

Tables there are often covered with linens for a more formal feel.

For two and a half years, O’Neil Caribbean Kitchen has been serving Caribbean, American and European fare in this unlikely location. It has been delivering those foods tableside to Arubans as well as visitors – mostly Americans and Europeans.

“I wanted the kind of place where guests can dine in a cooled space, or just sit and relax over a glass of wine,” says namesake chef-owner O’Neil Williams, who runs the spot with his wife, Lillian, and brother, Errol. “We started out thinking the place would be more for locals, especially for lunch, but we do get some tourists.”

The food choices are certainly broad enough to meet any guest’s needs. “Our menu is extensive. We have almost everything that an international restaurant in the hotel area would have,” Williams notes, listing shrimp cocktail, escargot in garlic butter, and steamed mussels in a cream sauce with garlic bread for dipping as fan favorites.

Williams is from Jamaica, though, and lives on Aruba. That means he has a certain affinity for Caribbean specialties. He makes those available too. The daily soup, always created on a whim, is prepared the way it would be in a Caribbean home. That might mean it contains chicken or beef, but never even a dollop of cream. “Caribbeans don’t eat creamy soups,” he explains.

Americans looking to stay closer to home food-wise gravitate toward the lamb chops. “Americans love these. So do locals,” Williams reports. “We season the meat with spices from Jamaica. It’s a mild jerk sauce with pimento, thyme and other flavors all blended together.” The default recipe is flavorful yet not spicy, Williams notes. For those seeking a burst of heat, he provides a housemade pickle of fiery scotch bonnet peppers. Daily specials are almost always Jamaican. Curried

O’Neil Caribbean Kitchen’s main dining room, the heart of the operation, is a comfortable, lively venue. Bright green and orange swags flank each window – green, one of the colors on Jamaica’s flag, and orange as a nod to the Netherlands, Aruba’s parent country.

Williams spent his early life in Jamaica, where he worked as cook for many years. In 2001, he joined a friend on Aruba to help open a restaurant. After six years, he left for the nowdefunct Promenade. When it was time to go out on his own, he was attracted to San Nicolas’ low rents, plus the area’s growth potential, and set up shop. “I had a lot of confidence,” he says. “I believed the food was good, and that would bring in clients.” And so it did.

Con sus sillas tapizadas, los acentos de piedra y los estantes de vinos de madera entrecruzados, este restaurante se mezcla en un típico hotel de Dawn Beach o la calle comercial de Oranjestad. Sin embargo, esta escapada con aire acondicionado es un escenario inesperado: San Nicolás arriba y por venir.

Como tal, sus alimentos cocinados por el chef, su formato de servicio de mesa, asientos en el patio y tranquilo salón de segundo piso crean un ambiente de comedor que destaca solo.

Durante dos años y medio, O’Neil Caribbean Kitchen ha estado sirviendo comida caribeña, americana y europea en este lugar poco convencional. Aruba’s Art Extravaganza A new art fair blends visual, performance and fashion arts.

Returning from Latin America, Tito Bolivar lamented that his beloved Aruba had little public art. “I saw lots of murals on buildings, especially in Colombia,” he says. “We had very little art on display at all here and no murals.”

Luckily for Aruba, Bolivar, president of Pure Aruba Events Foundation, is an event planner. With his urging and energy, in 2016 Aruba held its first art fair. The island is already preparing for a 2017 event, this one even bigger and better. To be held in mid-October, the Aruba Art Fair will be a week-long series of arts-related gatherings that will culminate in a threeday indoor-outdoor venue for artists to display and sell their works.

This bustling burst of artistic alliances all takes place in San Nicolas, which until recently was a quiet strip of streets by day, a red light district after dark. It’s now becoming a destination. Locals and visitors alike come by regularly to check out the murals painted for the first art fair. Plus, two businesses have opened in this growing, edgy arts district: Aruba Cosecha, a store specializing in island-made crafts, and the radio broadcaster Massive 103.5 FM. While most art fairs are essentially a series of white tents with paintings, sculptures and jewelry for sale in each, the Aruba Arts Fair is distinctively different. First off, the 125 artists’ booths are attractive, some with wooden planks, many created by “a group of guys who do pop-up galleries on the island,” Bolivar says.

The artists themselves, both local and international, were carefully chosen with the help of Venezuelan curator Luis Gómez. “We wanted to be well-balanced in terms of art categories,” Bolivar notes, “and we wanted the art to be of a certain level.”

For-sale paintings, sculptures, photographs and such may be the base of the Aruba Art Fair, but the market is only one event of what might be called an extravaganza. During the three days that these goods are for sale, Value Street, the heart of the event, has way more going on. Musicians play music, both cultural and pop.

Designers and other fashion pros show their edgy apparel-based stuff during on-the-street fashion shows.

In 2016, the street was lined with string lights, and an artist installation by an island art school stood at the entrance. “You could experience art while buying your ticket,” Bolivar points out. Via a program called Art Expression, 2-meter-by-3-meter painted canvases added color throughout the art fair. They were made by local children.

Dancers danced, poets recited poems, musicians sent out soulful sounds, bands played sets, 10 sculptors displayed one creation apiece, a display celebrated 125 of Aruba Aloe’s manufacture … and students from two island culinary schools competed to make an artistic version of paintings from dessert foodstuffs.

In 2017, in the days leading up to the three-day art fair, San Nicolas will host art workshops, art talks, fashion-meets-art events, fashion shows, and evening events where the artists can meet one another. And, 10 artists will paint murals on buildings. Then, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the crux of the festivities will begin.

The cost to the artist of all types to participate? Zero. “All of this was 100 percent free for the artists,” Bolivar points out. “We put this together to change San Nicolas into a vibrant neighborhood where locals and tourists can enjoy art.”

The fair cost plenty to produce, of course, but many entities shared that burden, and that system will continue for a few years.

Among those who contributed were the Aruba Tourism Authority, the Ministry of Tourism, the airport, and select resorts and banks.

Bolivar, who was born and raised on the island, will do what it takes to make the Aruba Art Fair an annual tradition. “Who doesn’t want to go to Aruba?” he asks rhetorically. “All anyone needs is an excuse.” And this is it, as if the sunny skies and broad sandy beaches aren’t reason enough. “The idea is to promote Aruba and make the island alive with art.”

Arte Extravagante de Aruba Una nueva feria de arte combina el arte visual, el rendimiento y las artes de la moda.

Por Rona Gindin De regreso de América Latina, Tito Bolívar lamentó que su amada Aruba tuviera poco arte público. ”Vi muchos murales en edificios, especialmente en Colombia”, dice. ”Teníamos muy poco arte en exhibición en todo aquí y sin murales.”

Por suerte para Aruba, Bolívar, presidente de Pure Aruba Events Foundation, es un organizador de eventos. Con su impulso y energía, en 2016 Aruba celebró su primera feria de arte. La isla ya se está preparando para un evento en 2017, que será aún más grande y mejor. La Feria de Arte de Aruba se celebrará a mediados de octubre y será una semana de encuentros relacionados con las artes que culminarán en tres días de exposición en iteriores/exteriores para que los artistas exhiban y vendan sus obras.

Lo que es más, la isla ahora cuenta con 15 edificios que exhiben divertidos murales de colores y obtendrá otro tanto en el momento en que la feria 2017 se lance.

Esta explosión de alianzas artísticas se lleva a cabo en San Nicolás, que hasta hace poco era una tranquila franja de calles de día, y un barrio rojo después de la oscuridad. Ahora se está convirtiendo en un destino. Locales y visitantes por igual vienen regularmente para ver los murales pintados para la primera feria de arte. Además, dos negocios se han abierto en este creciente distrito de artes vivas: Aruba Cosecha, una tienda especializada en artesanías de la isla, y la emisora de radio Massive 103.5 FM. Aruba was first settled by an Amerindian tribe called the Caiquetios. Rock paintings and fragments of pottery dating from around A.D. 1,000 have been found on the island. The first European to visit Aruba was the Spanish explorer Alonso de Ojeda in 1499 and in 1636 it became a Dutch colony. The name Aruba is derived from the words “ore” and “ruba” or red gold, a reference to the discovery of gold on the island in 1824.

In 1986, Aruba won its independence from The Netherlands Antilles and has status apart or autonomy within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

ORANJESTAD

Nestled on the shores of Paardenbaai (bay of the horses), island capital Oranjestad sprang up at the end of the 18th century. The island’s oldest monument is Fort Zoutman, built to guard the young town in 1796. The Willem III Tower was added in 1868 to function as a lighthouse, it was named after the Dutch ruler of that time.

Many of the city’s founders were merchants from Curaçao and they continued the tradition of commerce in their new home. Today Oranjestad is a peaceful and picturesque town, its streets lined with Dutch colonial gabled houses and modern buildings such as shops, malls, banks and offices that echo the architectural style of yesteryear.

Spend your time in Oranjestad browsing through the many stores, malls and markets, dining or visiting several small museums and galleries. Caya Betico Croes, Havenstraat, Zoutmanstraat,

Wilheminastraat and the waterfront boulevard are the principal streets. The port hums with activity when cruise ships dock and an impromptu floating market springs up at the wharf every morning when island fishermen and farmers gather to sell their wares.

Located in Fort Zoutman, the History Museum has informative displays on the island’s past and local traditions. The Archaeological Museum on Zoutmanstraat is an introduction to the ancient inhabitants of Aruba and their legacy. Artifacts on display include pottery, art, stone tools and burial urns recovered at archeological sites throughout the island. Visit the Kunsthuis art gallery, café and cultural center where the entertainment program includes concerts, theater, movies and exhibitions.

BEACH HOPPING

Eagle Beach is so beautiful that it would be hard get tired of it, however if you like beach hopping, the island has some of the finest pearly white strands in the Caribbean, each one with its own charm.

Located on the northwestern tip of the island, Arashi Beach and Boca Catalina are sheltered, making them popular snorkeling and swimming spots. Palm Beach is the island’s most famous and busiest beach and the location for many of its most popular waterfront restaurants and bars. Traveling south from Eagle Beach, Manchebo, Punta Brabo and Druif are all picturesque spots.

Mangel Halto is a secluded cove that is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The coral reef is so close to the coast that shore diving is possible. The shallow and sheltered bays of Rogers and Baby Beach are popular with visitors and locals alike and boast shade huts and food stands.

On the windward shore, the surf is stronger and the coastline opens up to offer dramatic views of wide beaches such as Boca Grandi and Wariruri. There are also extensive dunes, rock platforms and natural limestone arches, basins and sea caves created over the centuries by wind and waves.

SPANISH LAGOON

Legend has it that the Spanish Lagoon was once a hideaway for pirates, whether this is true or not, the quiet waterway and the surrounding mangroves are a haven for wildlife, including herons, osprey, owls and parrots. The lagoon is located between Pos Chiquito Bay and the ruins of the Balashi Gold Mine. Follow the nature trail from the lagoon through the wetlands to Balashi and the Cunucu di Aloe plantation.

ARIKOK NATIONAL PARK

Protecting one third of the island’s surface, Arikok National Park is a patchwork of rolling hills covered in cacti and bent divi trees, strange rock formations (lava, quartz diorite and limestone), caves and a stretch of coastline with beaches, dunes and rock platforms.

The arid landscape is home to a surprising variety of birds including the endemic shoko or Aruba burrowing owl and prikichi or parakeet, orioles and hummingbirds, snakes, lizards, iguanas, wild donkeys and goats.

Despite its inhospitable appearance, Arikok has been inhabited for thousands of years. Rock paintings in Fontein Cave and on huge boulders and the vestiges of ancient villages are testimony to the earliest Amerindian inhabitants. The park is also dotted with stone dwellings or cunucu which date from the Colonial period and housed the poorest settlers and their estate workers. A network of trails traverses the park and guided tours are available.

See some of the world’s most beautiful and colorful insects at the Butterfly Farm. Other sites of interest on the island include San Nicolas, the second largest town which grew up around the oil refinery and attracted workers from many of the British Caribbean islands. Visitors can go into the bush to explore the ruins of the 19th century gold smelters at Bushiribana and Balashi or the rock formations at Casibari and Ayo. The Donkey Sanctuary in Santa Lucia was founded in 1997 to provide a home for stray animals and for a glimpse of Africa you can also call in at the Ostrich Farm.

Indeed, the island has its own windsurfing community and over the past few years, several local windsurfers have triumphed in international tournaments. HEAD FOR THE FAIRWAY

Most golfers make a beeline for the Tierra del Sol golf course on the northwest tip of the island. This 18-hole, par 71 course designed by Robert Trent Jones II is challenging and has spectacular views of the Caribbean and the surrounding countryside. There are also two 9-hole courses at the Aruba Golf Club near San Nicolas in the south and the Links at the Divi Resort.
