HIT THE BEACH

FITNESS CENTER

Costa Linda is located on Eagle Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on Aruba. Safe and sheltered, its cool white sands, shallow waters and plentiful shade make it ideal for children and it is also popular with local families. Shade huts, sun loungers and beach chairs are available on a first come first serve basis for the use of registered Costa Linda members and guests from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Remember to take all your belongings with you when you leave the beach.

You’ll find a complete list of beach and pool rules in the Resort tips section of this magazine, please take a few moments to read them. Eagle Beach is a public beach and there are no lifeguards so you swim at your own risk.

Keep up with your daily workout at the Fitness Center where you’ll find a variety of exercise machines to help you stay in shape. The gym staff is on hand to help you and provide for your every need.

Please wear proper attire: shirt, shorts and sneakers. Youths under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

The minimum age for the Gym is 15 years old. The Gym is located beside the elevator landing (A-B Wing) on the lobby level and is open daily from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.

GETTING YOUR BEARINGS

The calm waters of Eagle Beach are ideal for kayaks and sail boating and as a Costa Linda member or guest you are entitled to the complimentary use of a kayak for one hour per suite.

Reservations are taken at the Towel desk or you can call Ext. 7224.

Kayak hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the use of kayaks is at your own risk. Children must be accompanied by an adult and a maximum of two adults is permitted per kayak.

Don’t miss the orientation briefing on Saturday at 9 a.m in the Lobby. This informative chat will help you get your bearings and find out about all the activities available at the resort and around the island.

VELERO SENCILLO Las tranquilas aguas de Eagle Beach son excelentes para practicar kayak y navegar en velero, como socio o huésped de Costa Linda tiene derecho al uso gratuito de kayak por una hora por suite. Reservaciones en el módulo de toallas o llame a la Ext. 7224. Los horarios del tour de kayak son de 9 a.m. a 3 p.m. y el uso de kayaks es bajo su propia responsabilidad. POOL FUN

After swimming and splashing in the kids pool, take the little ones to the beachfront play area designed specifically for them. The kids play gym is suitable for children under the age of 12 and there are a variety of complimentary events during the week.

You must supervise your children at all times and ensure that there is no rough play on the equipment that may endanger their safety. The use of the installations is at your own risk.

Spend hours of watery fun in the resort pool enjoying organized activities such as volleyball and pool aerobics or simply relax pool side and cool off in the Jacuzzis after your sunbathing session. Small children will love the kids pool. It is suitable for tots up to six years old.

Pool and Jacuzzi hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Please abide by the pool rules and help us keep the pool area clean.

There’s something different every day ranging from pool and beach games to arts and crafts, bingo and live steel band music for adults. Keep the children busy with jewelry making, finger painting and sand castles, a tug of war and a scavenger hunt on the beach.

Activities are subject to change and for a complete line up, check the activities board located adjacent to the Tour Desk in the lobby entrance, or visit the Activities booth below the kiddies pool, Ext. 7224.

SUN TIPS It is easy to get carried away when sunbathing at the beginning of your vacation, especially if you are from a cold northern climate. Don’t overdo it, painful sunburn will spoil your fun. Take care and always use sun block with the SPF (at least 15) suitable for your skin type. Choose environmentally friendly sun products and apply regularly after going in the water.

If you are going snorkeling it is a good idea to wear a T-shirt. The hottest time of the day is between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and remember that you can still get burnt even when it is cloudy or breezy.

THE CITY OF SAN NICOLAS PLAYS HOST TO ARUBA’S NEW ISLAND FEST

BY DAVID MINASIAN If you’re looking to experience the culture, the food and the music of Aruba, you need look no further than Aruba’s all new Island Fest. Previously known as the Carubbian Festival, the revamped Island Fest of San Nicolas celebrated its inaugural unveiling on May 29, 2019 and by all accounts was a resounding success. So much so that organizers of the event have already arranged for the festivities to continue once a month throughout the rest of the year.

The City of San Nicolas is of course known for its stunning murals created by a number of international artists from around the world which decorate the city’s walls and adorn its structures. In addition to its rich history, its unique architecture, its cultural displays and its picturesque beaches, the addition of the new San Nicolas street festival is a perfect opportunity for visitors to mingle with the local population, taste its delectable food, sample its exquisite drinks and experience the Aruban way of life in a magical setting.

The city of San Nicolas can be found 33 kilometers to the southeast of the island’s capitol of Oranjestad. San Nicolas has been nicknamed “The Sunrise City” due to its breathtakingly beautiful sunrises. When its refinery opened a century ago, San Nicolas became a multi-cultural destination which attracted people of all nationalities to the island. This influx of new cultures and influences shaped the industrious pioneer town of San Nicolas into a friendly, tightly knit community that is unique within the Caribbean. In fact, it is this unique heritage and culture that the city, in previous years, had attempted to share through the former Carubbian Festival, but now has found the proper vehicle with its all new Island Fest.

The downtown promenade of San Nicolas serves as the perfect location for this exciting festival, with three of its streets individually decked out to represent a specific island theme, consisting of the local island, the multicultural island and the historical island. Those who have already experienced Aruba’s Island Fest have commented on how each of the streets seem to possess their own distinct vibe.

Aruba’s Island Fest is held on the last Wednesday of every month from 7pm to 10pm in the heart of the city of San Nicolas. Although entrance to the family friendly event is free and open to the public, all visitors are nevertheless going to want to have some cash on hand just in case you wish to take home a colorful Island Fest craft or souvenir, or sample some of Aruba’s irresistible authentic culinary cuisine.

Access to the Costa Linda Beach Resort is controlled and all owners and guests must register at the Front desk upon arrival. The Resort assumes no responsibility for those not properly registered. The use of resort facilities is reserved exclusively for Costa Linda owners and guests.

Costa Linda is a family resort and swearing, topless and nude bathing, drugs and public drunkenness are not tolerated. Please take note that the legal drinking age on Aruba is 18 and an ID is required. No loud music or parties after 11 p.m. The Board reserves the right to assess a fine of up to one week’s maintenance fee if the resort regulations are violated.

YOUR RESORT HOME When you stay at the Resort, you are not a guest in a hotel, you own your suite during the interval purchased. The Resort is not a hotel, nor is it managed as such. Accepting this fundamental difference is essential to understand why compensation is not permitted for any minor inconvenience you might encounter during your visit.

As in your home, unexpected problems can occur. If a drain clogs or the safe will not open, call the Front desk for assistance. You can be assured the matter will be taken care of as quickly as possible, often within minutes. Furthermore, situations sometimes occur as a result of miscommunication or human error. Accidents will happen. Rather than expecting some form of complimentary compensation, a sincere apology from Front Desk personnel should suffice.

Guests who insist upon complimentary compensation for inconvenience or honest mistakes must understand and accept the difference between hotel and Resort Management. Unlike hotels, Costa Linda Beach Resort is nonprofit. Owner dues cover operating expenses only. There are no funds to cover free dinners, extra nights, or gifts. The cost of such compensatory awards would come directly from owner dues. Costa Linda Beach Resort is your vacation home. If a problem arises please report it. Staff members will do everything possible to make your stay pleasant and comfortable, but they are not permitted to offer, nor allowed to give, free gifts. You can expect an apology for an inconvenience, but not a reward.

Daily Housekeeping service is available Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. No service on Sundays and local holidays. If you would like to have your room cleaned at a specific time between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., please inform your housekeeper or call the Housekeeping Office at Ext. 7411.

On Sundays your towels will be changed, toiletries will be replenished and trash cans will be emptied. We kindly request that you keep your room as clean as possible. Please do not hang towels or clothes on your balcony railing. Use the laundry line in the bathroom and the towel racks on the decks. A Housekeeping surcharge may be applied if your room requires additional cleaning.

AIR-CONDITIONING Costa Linda Beach Resort has installed a state of the art environmentally friendly “Smart Thermostat” system as part of its ongoing commitment to our owners and the community at large. The Smart Thermostat system senses when the Suite is unoccupied and will raise the thermostat set point to an economical humidity control setting until the moment a guest returns to the room. Please allow a few minutes for the room to cool to your selected temperature upon your return. Please be aware that the air conditioning unit will be interrupted if you should leave a door open. This prevents harmful mold issues, humidity damage and energy waste.

Beach and Pool Rules Reglamento de albercas y playa DO NOT RESERVE MORE THAN 1 CHICKEE HUT PER ROOM. All chaise lounges will be available for use from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on a first come, first serve basis. The hotel reserves the right to remove belongings in the event a chaise lounge and/or a hut is left unattended for more than two hours. The removed items will be held at the Towel Hut and can be retrieved between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

•Y ou may sign out towels with the room keys. Only one towel may be issued per person per day and you should return them before 6 p.m. to obtain a clean towel in the morning.

The penalty is $15 US if you misplace a towel. All towels must be returned prior to check out. The Towel Hut is located in front of the kiddies playground and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ext. 7414.

•D o not leave personal property unattended.

•N o bottles on the beach.

•C hildren under three years old are not allowed in the main pool. Children who are not potty trained, in diapers or swimmies are not allowed in the main pool. This rule will be strictly enforced. Please use the “baby” pool.

Children aged three to five must be supervised by parents or a guardian in the main pool. Children over the age of six may only use the main pool if they know how to swim.

•P roper attire is required, swimming wear only.

No nude or topless sunbathing by the pool or on the beach.

•R unning jumps from the waterfall platform or from poolside into the pool is prohibited.

Jumping from a stationary position is permitted.

Do not run or engage in horseplay, no jumping or diving into the pool.

• T he pool deck is slippery when wet.

• E lectrical appliances and radios are not permitted in the pool area.

• S kateboards are not allowed on the premises.

•N o lifeguard on duty, swim at your own risk in the pool and on the beach. Management is not responsible for accidents or injuries.

•A lways shower before going into the pool and using the Jacuzzi. Glassware, coolers, food and drink are not allowed in the pool area or the Jacuzzi.

•T he Jacuzzi is not suitable for the very young or elderly, persons suffering from diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure, pregnant women, persons under the influence of alcohol or medication which can cause drowsiness. No children under the age of 15 years are permitted. There is a 10-minute limit for each Jacuzzi. Do not put soap in the Jacuzzi.

On the 7th of May 1985 took place the first show of “Bon Bini Festival“ at the Fort Zoutman/ Museo Historico.

Bon Bini is Papiamento do “Welcome”, and that is exactly how we would like to make all our guests visiting the island and the festival feel - at home!

El 7 de mayo de 1985 tuvo lugar el primer espectáculo del “Festival Bon Bini” en el Fuerte Zoutman / Museo Histórico.

Bon Bini es “Bienvenido” en Papiamento, y así es exactamente como nos gustaría que todos nuestros huéspedes que visitan la isla y el festival se sientan como en casa.

The goal of the show is to demonstrate to the tourist what Aruba’s folklore, culture, language and traditions are. In the end of 2017 the show got a new facelift showing more contents of the history, more interaction with the public and showing more of the beautiful traditional dances with a touch of classic highlights like our “Caha di Orgel” and our typical band playing live music.

El objetivo del espectáculo es demostrar al turista qué es el folclore, la cultura, el idioma y las tradiciones de Aruba. Besides the show there is also a kitchen/bar that offers traditional food and drinks and our local artists displaying and selling local products and souvenirs. This show is all year around (expect for the last 2 weeks of December and the first week of January) which takes place every Tuesday night at the Fort Zoutman. Doors open for the public starting from 6 p.m. and the festival shows start at 7 p.m. Entrance fee is $10 per person (kids up to 12 years pay $5). You can also enjoy different authentic Aruban plates for a small price.

The first European to visit Aruba was the Spanish explorer Alonso de Ojeda in 1499 and in 1636 it became a Dutch colony. The name Aruba is derived from the words “ore” and “ruba” or red gold, a reference to the discovery of gold on the island in 1824. In 1986, Aruba won its independence from The Netherlands Antilles and has status apart or autonomy within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Aruba is 19.6 miles long and 6 miles across, totaling 77 square miles or 193 square kilometers. Aruba is located 12° 30’ North Latitude; 68° 58’ West Longitude; 19 miles north of the Venezuelan coast, 990 nautical miles from Miami and 890 nautical miles from the Equator.

Aruba is situated on the Caribbean Tectonic Plate. The island is made up of limestone capped hills and ridges, with cliffs on the northern and northeastern coasts and coral reefs on the southern coast. Aruba’s terrain is almost entirely flat. The highest elevation, Mount Jamanota, is only 188 m. above sea level. Rock formations characterize the interior of the island.

CLIMATE The Aruban climate has little variation from yearly average of a sunny 81°F or 27°C tempered by northeasterly trade winds. Aruba is out of the range of the Caribbean hurricanes. A word of caution, though, the sun is strongest between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and using a protective sunscreen is highly recommended.

LANGUAGES While most people on Aruba speak English and some Spanish, the official island languages are Dutch and Papiamento, a Creole language which is a blend of Spanish, Portuguese, African, Dutch, French, English and even Amerindian words. Derived from the Portuguese verb “papaer,” which means “to speak,” Papiamento originated during the slavery era as a pidgin lingo used by estate overseers to communicate with workers from different West African tribes.

Nichole Danser, a Math teacher at ISA, wanted to offer her students the opportunity to learn to SCUBA dive. She organized classes with the help of Aqua Windies and convinced 10 youngsters to dive into a new world of adventure. The students all earned their PADI Open Water Diver Certification. Some even continued their education to become Advanced Open Water divers.

During that time the students started to recognize that some reefs looked much prettier than others, some had much more fish and others were covered in algae. When they asked Nichole why there was this difference and why the same area could look so nice one day and bad just a month later, she did not have an immediate answer. So like any teacher would, she encouraged her students to help her figure out the answer.

That is when they all watched Chasing Coral and decided they needed to help the reefs around Aruba. They discussed possible ways to do their part and investigated what was currently happening in Aruba to support the reefs. They traveled to Bonaire over their Easter Break to take the Coral Restoration course offered by the Coral Restoration Foundation Bonaire (now Reef Renewal Network Bonaire).

Durante ese tiempo, los estudiantes comenzaron a reconocer que algunos arrecifes se veían mucho más bonitos que otros, algunos tenían mucho más peces y otros estaban cubiertos de algas. While planning the trip the manager of DePalm Island offered a protected place to build a coral nursery and carry out the first restoration project. At this time the group had 10 members, including one student from a local school. The students would meet at DePalm Island in the afternoon after school to build their very first coral nursery. At the same time, Jolly Pirates Aruba heard about the program and wanted to support the project. With the assistance of their AquaLung representative, they helped the ScubbleBubbles get some of the SCUBA gear needed for the young volunteers

to use while diving for the project. After receiving permission from the government, the students rescued fragments of staghorn coral from the nearby reef and hung them from their ‘trees’ in order to protect them and help them grow. Each week a group of volunteers cleans algae and firecoral from the structure. They make sure the coral is still healthy and remove any predators that might be present. After 11 months the fragments were ready to be out planted onto the reef in order to restore the area.

Over time the group has grown from a group of 11 students from two schools to a registered foundation with over 30 students from multiple schools around the island. They have also opened their second coral nursery, sponsored by Aruba Aloe. With the launch of their second nursery they joined the Perry Institute for Marine Science’s Reef Rescue Network. As part of this network their trees and colonies have been tagged, a GPS location has been taken, and samples have been genetically tested to ensure biodiversity.

ORANJESTAD Nestled on the shores of Paardenbaai (bay of the horses), island capital Oranjestad sprang up at the end of the 18th century. The island’s oldest monument is Fort Zoutman, built to guard the young town in 1796. The Willem III Tower was added in 1868 to function as a lighthouse, it was named after the Dutch ruler of that time.

Many of the city’s founders were merchants from Curaçao and they continued the tradition of commerce in their new home. Today Oranjestad is a peaceful and pictu- resque town, its streets lined with Dutch colonial gabled houses and modern buildings such as shops, malls, banks and offices that echo the architectural style of yesteryear.

Spend your time in Oranjestad browsing through the many stores, malls and markets, dining or visiting several small museums and galleries. Caya Betico Croes, Havenstraat, Zoutmanstraat, Wilheminastraat and the waterfront boulevard are the principal streets. The port hums with activity when cruise ships dock and an impromptu floating market springs up at the wharf every morning when island fishermen and farmers gather to sell their wares.

Located in Fort Zoutman, the History Museum has informative displays on the island’s past and local traditions. The Archaeological Museum on Zoutmanstraat is an introduction to the ancient inhabitants of Aruba and their legacy. Artifacts on display include pottery, art, stone tools and burial urns recovered at archeological sites throughout the island.

Visit the Kunsthuis art gallery, café and cultural center where the entertainment program includes concerts, theater, movies and exhibitions.

Traveling south from Eagle Beach, Manchebo, Punta Brabo and Druif are all picturesque spots. Mangel Halto is a secluded cove that is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The coral reef is so close to the coast that shore diving is possible.

The shallow and sheltered bays of Rogers and Baby Beach are popular with visitors and locals alike and boast shade huts and food stands. On the windward shore, the surf is stronger and the coastline opens up to offer dramatic views of wide beaches such as Boca Grandi and Wariruri. There are also extensive dunes, rock platforms and natural limestone arches, basins and sea caves created over the centuries by wind and waves.

SPANISH LAGOON Legend has it that the Spanish Lagoon was once a hideaway for pirates, whether this is true or not, the quiet waterway and the surrounding mangroves are a haven for wildlife, including herons, osprey, owls and parrots. The lagoon is located between Pos Chiquito Bay and the ruins of the Balashi Gold Mine.

Follow the nature trail from the lagoon through the wetlands to Balashi and the Cunucu di Aloe plantation.

EXPLORE FURTHER Other sites of interest on the island include San Nicolas, the second largest town which grew up around the oil refinery and attracted workers from many of the British Caribbean islands. They kept their own customs, including calypso, carnival, steel bands and cuisine and the community has a unique ambiance. Visitors can go into the bush to explore the ruins of the 19th century gold smelters at Bushiribana and Balashi or the rock formations at Casibari and Ayo. The Donkey Sanctuary in Santa Lucia was founded in 1997 to provide a home for stray animals and for a glimpse of Africa you can also call in at the Ostrich Farm.

ARIKOK NATIONAL PARK Protecting one third of the island’s surface, Arikok National Park is a patchwork of rolling hills covered in cacti and bent divi trees, strange rock formations (lava, quartz diorite and limestone), caves and a stretch of coastline with beaches, dunes and rock platforms.

The arid landscape is home to a surprising variety of birds including the endemic shoko or Aruba burrowing owl and prikichi or parakeet, orioles and hummingbirds, snakes, lizards, iguanas, wild donkeys and goats. Despite its inhospitable appearance, Arikok has been inhabited for thousands of years. Rock paintings in Fontein Cave and on huge boulders and the vestiges of ancient villages are testimony to the earliest Amerindian inhabitants.

The park is also dotted with stone dwellings or cunucu which date from the Colonial period and housed the poorest settlers and their estate workers. A network of trails traverses the park and guided tours are available.

LEARN HOW TO WINDSURF The prevailing trade winds that blow across Aruba at a constant 15 knots cause choppy conditions along the windward shore, making beaches like Boca Grandi unsuitable for swimming and snorkeling but highly desirable for experienced windsurfers, kite boarders and surfers. Indeed, the island has its own windsurfing community and over the past few years, several local windsurfers have triumphed in international tournaments. The island also hosts the annual HiWinds Amateur World Challenge Windsurfing competition.
