he project to expand Wi-Fi coverage at the resorts is ongoing.

Villa access is now available in some of the buildings at The Royal Islander and The Royal Caribbean with the remaining buildings being completed by July. Work is continuing at The Royal Mayan and resort-wide access will be achieved by July. At The Royal Sands, Wi-Fi will be available by June in all buildings, with the exception of A, I and P, which will be finished by August 2010.

Due to factors associated with construction and installation, the project proved much more complex than anticipated and was rescheduled. We apologize for any inconvenience that the delay may have caused.

roximity card reader microchips (RFID) are currently being fitted to the villa door locks in all resorts.

The Royal Cancun and The Royal Islander have already been completed and work will continue at The Royal Caribbean, The Royal Mayan and The Royal Sands. The project will be completed by September 2010.

The member card currently in use is not compatible with the new card reader and members due to visit us in the next few months will be issued with a standard card at check in. We are currently reviewing our Membership Card program and will be notifying you about the changes in 60 days.

Villa Door Locks •

ancun-based NGO Amigos de Sian Ka’an recently recognized the steadfast support it has received from Royal Resorts over the years for its conservation work, research projects and fundraising campaigns.

Following in the footsteps of The Royal Haciendas, the Cancún Royal Resorts recently signed an agreement with MARTI (The Mesoamerican Reef Tourism Initiative, developed by Amigos de Sian Ka’an, Conservation International and the Coral Reef Alliance), a team of conservation experts that works with local government, hotels, marinas and cruise lines to implement better environmental practices and minimize the negative impacts that the area tourist industry has on the world’s second longest reef.

MARTI representatives met with resort managers to discuss environmental policy and measures to reduce electricity and water consumption, improve waste and sewage disposal, recycling and raise environmental awareness. They prepared a study, pointed out areas of opportunity and will be working with the resorts to make improvements, organize training courses and produce manuals, with the aim of eventually obtaining sustainable tourism certification.

Each resort now has a “Green Team” with representatives drawn from different areas of the company such as Housekeeping, Maintenance, Engineering, Gardening, the Spa, Restaurants, Stores, Administration and Management to discuss ideas, share experiences and implement eco-friendly policies in their departments.

The Royal Haciendas has already received its certification from MARTI as a resort that is following good environmental practices.

In other news, the Royal Resorts gardeners have begun to compost garden waste and there is a solar power pilot project at The Royal Sands. The rooftop panels would provide power to heat the water used for cleaning and other services (not the villas).

Siguiendo los pasos de The Royal Haciendas, los desarrollos de Royal Resorts en Cancún firmaron recientemente un acuerdo con MARTI (la Iniciativa de Turismo del Arrecife Mesoamericano, desarrollado por Amigos de Sian Ka’an, Conservación Internacional y la Alianza de Arrecifes de Coral), un equipo de expertos en conservación que trabaja con los gobiernos locales, hoteles, marinas y las puertos de cruceros para implementar mejores prácticas ambientales y minimizar el impacto negativo que la industria de turismo tiene en el segundo arrecife más largo del mundo.

Cada hotel cuenta ahora con un “Equipo Verde” con representantes de diferentes áreas de la compañía, tales como Ama de Llaves, Mantenimiento, Ingeniería, Jardinería, Spa, Restaurantes, Tiendas, Administración y Gerencia para discutir ideas, compartir experiencias e implementar políticas eco-amigables en sus departamentos.

Turtle Time • Temporada de Tortugas

M

ay marks the start of turtle nesting season in the Mexican Caribbean and the annual campaign to protect these very special visitors. The Quintana Roo coast is one of the world’s most important nesting areas for the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and also welcomes the loggerhead (Caretta caretta), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and the occasional leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), the largest and rarest of the world’s eight turtle specie.

Biologists, hotel personnel, members of the armed forces and volunteers patrol area beaches at night on the lookout for turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs in the sand. Their presence helps keep poachers and predators such as dogs, raccoons, seabirds and crabs away from the nests. When they find a female turtle, they watch from a distance as she digs a nest and then move in to tag and measure her when she begins to lay her eggs. The eggs are subsequently collected and transferred to a corral where they are guarded until they hatch 45 to 60 days later. The young are subsequently released at dusk to begin life at sea. Hopefully, in 12 to 15 years, some of them will return to the Mexican Caribbean to lay their own eggs.

Turtles have been swimming the oceans for 100 million years, however centuries of overhunting and modern-day threats such as pollution, climate change and habitat loss has brought them to the brink of extinction. They need our help and deserve our respect. If you are coming down during the summer, join us in protecting these beautiful creatures by following these guidelines.

This year security staff at the resorts will be more watchful than ever and will flatten the sand to form gentle slopes in certain areas of the shoreline where turtles have nested in the past to help them as they move up the beach.

If you see a turtle on the beach. * Alert the security staff. * Be very quiet and keep still. * Watch from a distance (5 meters) and do not attempt to touch the turtle or crowd her. * Do not shine a flashlight in her direction or use your flash when taking pictures. *If you bring your children to help release the hatchlings, make sure that they follow instructions and please, no flash photography. * No smoking.

If the turtle is frightened by loud noises, people and bright lights, she will leave the beach without nesting and lay her eggs in the water, thus losing the entire clutch (90 to 110 eggs).

Under Mexican law it is illegal to persecute and hunt sea turtles or steal their eggs.

La costa de Quintana Roo es una de las zonas más importantes del mundo de anidación de la tortuga verde (Chelonia mydas) y también da la bienvenida a la caguama (Caretta caretta), tortuga carey (Eretmochelys imbricata) y ocasionalmente la tortuga laúd (Dermochelys coriacea), la más grande y escasa de las ocho especies de tortugas del mundo.

Los biólogos, personal del hotel, los miembros de las fuerzas armadas y voluntarios patrullan las playas en la noche cuidando a las tortugas que vienen a tierra para poner sus huevos en la arena. Su presencia ayuda a mantener los cazadores furtivos y depredadores como perros, mapaches, aves marinas y cangrejos lejos de los nidos. Cuando encuentran una tortuga hembra, la vigilan a distancia mientras cava su nido y después lo etiquetan y miden cuando ella comienza a poner sus huevos. Los huevos son posteriormente recogidos y trasladados a un corral donde están guardados hasta que nacen 45 a 60 días después. Las crías son posteriormente puestas en libertad al atardecer para comenzar la vida en el mar. Esperando que de 12 a 15 años, algunos de ellos vuelvan al Caribe Mexicano para poner sus propios huevos.

Las tortugas han nadado en los océanos durante 100 millones de años, sin embargo por siglos la caza excesiva y las amenazas de hoy en día como la contaminación, el cambio climático y la pérdida de hábitat ha llevado a estas al borde de la extinción. Ellas necesitan nuestra ayuda y merecen nuestro respeto. Si usted viene durante el verano, únase a nosotros en la protección de estas hermosas criaturas siguiendo estas pautas.

Este año el personal de seguridad en los desarrollos incrementará la vigilancia y aplanará la arena para formar pendientes en algunas zonas de la línea costera donde las tortugas han anidado en el pasado con el propósito de ayudarlos a moverse en la playa.

Si ve una tortuga en la playa. * Avise al personal de seguridad. * Guarde silencio y quédese quieto. * Observe a distancia (5 metros) y no trate de tocar la tortuga o molestarla. * No ilumine con una lámpara o utilice flash al tomar fotografías. *Si usted trae a sus hijos para ayudar a liberar las crías, asegúrese de que sigan las instrucciones y por favor, no tome fotos usando flash. * No fume.

Si la tortuga se asusta por los ruidos fuertes, la gente y las luces brillantes, se irá a la playa sin hacer su nido y depositará sus huevos en el agua, perdiendo así todos las crías (90 a 110 huevos).

De acuerdo a la ley mexicana es ilegal perseguir y cazar tortugas de mar o robar sus huevos.

Guest Certificates

eveloped by Interval Servicing, the new Guest Certificate program gives renters security and “peace of mind” and proof that all financial obligations (Club Service Fees) associated with the unit they are renting have been paid have been met and that it is not enrolled in any other program such as Interval International.

The Guest Certificate program is not mandatory but is an enhanced service that many renters find very convenient.

Once a Guest Certificate request is submitted, it is processed within one business day and both the member and the renter/guest receive a copy of the guest confirmation. The fee for this service is $39 US.

ummer visitors to the Mexican Caribbean have a once in a lifetime opportunity to come face to face with the largest fish in the world, a creature the size of a bus! From June to September, the island of Holbox joins Australia, Belize and a handful of other places round the globe in welcoming one of the great ocean wanderers, the whale shark (Rhincodon typus).

Measuring between 11 and 20 meters, the whale shark is in fact a gentle giant, filter feeding on plankton. Around 200 of them gather in the nutrient-rich waters off the coast of Holbox and Cabo Catoche and in the ocean deeps to the east of Contoy and Isla Mujeres and scientists believe that this is the largest concentration of whale sharks in the world.

St. Martin’s Billfish Tournament has anglers landing the big ones weighing over a whopping 700lbs and is the dream catch of fishermen. In June, join the Summer Heat Music Festival as Marigot’s seafront rocks to the sounds of world music and dancing.

In July, at the St. Martin Caribbean Festival you will sway the night away enjoying soca, calypso, dancehall reggae, zouk and other regional music at the Albéric Richards Stadium. In August, Sandy Ground Village Festival boasts sporty and cultural activities.

Anguilla’s August Monday has turned into a St. Maarten celebration as much as it is Anguillan. Scores of people come aboard yachts to join locals assembled on the beach in an afternoon of fun and social interaction.

The afternoon is sandwiched between a morning of J’ouvert (an early morning carnival) and an evening beach party. Los detalles se dieron a conocer hace pocas semanas por sus organizadores y productores, Giuseppe Cioccarelli y Jonathan Vieira, junto con el director artístico, Claudio Masenza. Richard Gere, legendario protagonista y activista, abrirá el festival inaugural como anfitrión oficial cuando este junio. Aparte de abrir el Festival, Gere también recibirá un premio especial por sus esfuerzos humanitarios y participará en la serie “Conversando Con” (“In Conversations With”) que se llevará a cabo con el público del festival.

El Festival de Cine Internacional de Aruba será un evento anual que traerá a gente de todo el mundo a ver una selección de películas, participar en discusiones, talleres y paneles y asistir a fiestas y eventos. A fun and unique international tennis tournament will be held on Eagle Beach, May 29 and May 30, June 6 - 8, July 1, October 24 - 26 and October 31 this year. Beach tennis joins the worlds of tennis and beach volleyball into an exhilarating sport. It is so simple to play, that it draws the attention of athletes and non-athletes alike. In the late 90’s beach tennis was first played in Brazil and the Netherlands. Aruba started in 2000 and it caught on so swiftly that in 2001 the Aruba Beach Tennis Foundation was formed and since then this foundation began organizing events to support the sport. November 2002 was the first International Beach Tennis Tournament in Aruba.

Now, 200 participants compete in this event that brings new players and aficionados from various countries together.

Un divertido y único torneo internacional de tenis tundra lugar en Eagle Beach, el 29 y 30 de mayo, del 6-8 de junio, el 1o de Julio, del 24-26 de octubre y el 31 de octubre del este año. Tenis de playa se une a los mundos de tenis y voleibol playero como un deporte emocionante. Es sencillo de jugar y llama la atención tanto de atletas como no-atletas. A finales de los 90 el tenis de playa se jugó por primera vez en Brasil y Países Bajos. Aruba comenzó en el 2000 y ha ganado popularidad tan rápido que en 2001 se formó la Fundación de Tenis de Playa en Aruba y desde entonces ha estado organizando eventos en apoyo del deporte.

En noviembre del 2002 se llevó a cabo el primer Torneo Internacional de Tenis de Playa en Aruba.

Hoy en día, 200 participantes compiten en este evento que reúne a nuevos jugadores y aficionados de varios países.

Museo Submarino de Esculturas

The Cancún-Isla Mujeres Reef Park is soon to be the site of the world’s largest underwater sculpture museum. Four hundred statues by British sculptor Jason de Caires-Taylor will be sunk in several different locations, including Punta Nizuc and Manchones Reef.

The life-size statues depict real people in the Cancun community, for example “Man on Fire,” one of the first statues to be submerged, is cast from a local fisherman. Featuring 100 figures, “Silent Evolution” will be the next installation to be completed and is scheduled for deployment in June, along with 100 other sculptures.

El parque de arrecife en las profundidades entre Cancún e Isla Mujeres pronto será hogar del museo submarino de esculturas más grande del mundo. Cuatrocientas estatuas hechas por el escultor británico Jason de Caires-Taylor se hundirán en distintas ubicaciones como Punta Nizuc y el Arrecife Manchones.

Estas estatuas de tamaño actual son representaciones de gente real de la comunidad de Cancún, por ejemplo “Hombre en Llamas”, una de las primeras estatuas en colocarse, se realizó con el molde de un pescador local. “Evolución Silenciosa” presenta cien figuras y será la próxima pieza en colocarse en junio.

Apart from their artistic appeal, the figures will provide an artificial habitat for reef dwellers such as corals, sponges and algae to colonize, in time attracting other creatures such as small fish and crustaceans. It is hoped this new attraction for snorkelers and divers will alleviate some of the visitor pressure on some of the most popular local reefs, giving coral communities a chance to recover.

In 2006, Jason de Caires Taylor created the world’s first underwater sculpture park in Grenada, the West Indies.

Aparte de su atractivo artístico, las piezas proporcionan un hábitat artificial para los habitantes del arrecife tales como corales, esponjas y algas. Estos colonizan las figuras y a su vez atraen otras criaturas como pequeños peces y crustáceos. Se espera que esta nueva atracción para quienes practican el esnórquel y para los buzos alivie un poco el tráfico de visitantes a los arrecifes más populares, dándole oportunidad para recuperarse a las comunidades de coral.

En 2006, Jason de Caires Taylor creó el primer parquet subacuático en el mundo en Grenada, Indias Occidentales.

New Anthropology Museum for Cancun

Construction has now begun on a new Anthropology Museum in the Cancun Hotel Zone. Located in front of The Royal Mayan, next to the San Miguelito archaeological site, the museum is expected to be one of the largest in Mexico and the hopes are that it will be inaugurated in December 2010 or early 2011.

Ha comenzado la construcción del nuevo Museo de Antropología en la zona hotelera de Cancún. Estará ubicado enfrente de The Royal Mayan, al lado del sitio arqueológico San Miguelito. Se espera que el museo sea uno de los más grandes en México con su inauguración programada para diciembre del 2010 o los primeros meses de 2011.

On May 21, after rituals to appease the ancient gods, teams of oarsmen from all over the Mexican Caribbean and beyond will board authentic Mayan canoes and set sail from Xcaret on the Sacred Crossing to Cozumel.

They will be following the sea route that was taken by pilgrims thousands of years ago as they made the perilous voyage to the holy island of Cozumel to worship at the shrine of Ixchel, the goddess of fertility and childbirth.

Activities associated with the Mayan Sacred Crossing will take place on May 20, 21 and 22 at Xcaret and on Cozumel.

El 21 de mayo, después de celebrar rituales para los antiguos dioses, equipos de remo del Caribe mexicano y más allá abordarán auténticas canoas mayas y emprenderán en una travesía desde Xcaret hasta Cozumel conocida como el Cruce Sagrado.

Seguirán la misma ruta náutica que llevó a los peregrinos de hace miles de años en este peligroso viaje a la isla sagrada de Cozumel donde adoraban el altar de Ixchel, diosa de fertilidad.

El programa de actividades del Cruce Sagrado Maya se llevarán a cabo el 20, 21 y 22 de mayo en Xcaret y Cozumel.

Mayan Discoveries on the Outskirts of Cancun

Preliminary excavations at the archaeological site known as “Ruinas del 20” on the outskirts of Cancun have uncovered 20 buildings of different sizes and uses, including a temple.

The National Institute of Anthropology & History is negotiating with the landowner where the site was discovered in order to be able to survey the entire area.

En las excavaciones preliminares en el sitio arqueológico conocido como “Ruinas del 20” a las afueras de Cancún se han descubierto 20 edificaciones de distintos tamaños y usos, incluyendo un templo.

El Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia está en tratos con el dueño del terreno para poder investigar el área entera.
