I cannot believe this will be the last newsletter in print for 2017; well that’s another year run past me. In the March edition the regions calendar was looking particularly busy with Advisory Days, Café Sessions/Self Help Groups etc… and now here we are entering the last few weeks of our events. In brief we have had a busy year again, there has been something practically every month between March and November of 2017. It has been especially nice to have more of the Groups in the region on board; we are seeing more activity and a greater diversity of photography mix across the region. That said, there is always room for more. On a second and slightly selfish note it makes my life a little easier in that events from Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are helping to boost the events calendar throughout the year. Regards

Working Towards Photographic Distinctions The RPS hold Distinctions Advisory Days across the country on a regular basis and the pictures below show such an advisory day in action at the New Brookhouse Club, Wakefield. For details of future Advisory Days and Assessment Days, keep an eye on the RPS Journal and on the back page of this Newsletter.
Wath Salon 2017 - hosted by Dearne Valley Camera Club. It is now thirty years since this exhibition was started, coordinated then, and now, by Tony Elliott APAGB of DVCC. Three Award categories each receive £50 plus medal: Best Monochrome Print; Best Colour Print; Best Projected Image. This year’s judge is: Mr Bill Hall DPAGB AFIAP ABPE Each person may submit up to 4 entries each, per category. Cost: 1 category is £5; 2 categories are £9, all three for £12. Photographs must have been taken in the last 5 years and not previously accepted by us. Entry deadline 18th Nov 2017; Exhibition 7th to 22nd Dec at Wath-upon-Dearne Library. Got any news? Most Photographic Societies/Clubs have a break over summer, but many new programs of events are being waved around, so don’t feel you can only belong to the one group or society, there is plenty of choice out there and many photographers with ideas to share.
Showcasing Yorkshire Exhibition Held at the Creative and Cultural Artspace2 in Hull, Friday 28th July saw the opening night of the Showcasing Yorkshire Exhibition. From a total of almost a hundred competition entrants, forty-seven images were selected for this Showcasing Yorkshire exhibition, from which the winners of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals and Ribbons were chosen. Over fifty guests attended on the opening night along with the Yorkshire Region Committee. Walter Benzie HonFRPS RPS President, opened proceedings with an excellent speech and making reference to some of the people he had been privileged to meet during his tenure as president of the society. Walter then took the time to speak with everyone there who had a photograph on display.
The Members Biennial Exhibition will be touring until 6th December 2017. Don’t forget all the events we hear about can also be put on the RPS Yorkshire facebook page, which has many hits from photographers looking events around the region.
The 2018 Events Calendar for the Yorkshire Region is well under way and we are hoping to support even more SIGs and Photographic groups/clubs out there in any way we can. If you have information about any such group/ club which you’d like to see mentioned in the Newsletter, please email details to the Editor (see bottom off page) so it can be shared with members and other readers.

CAUSING A STORM WITH A WIDE MOUTHED FROG For Michelle Howell LRPS, after retiring from her Police career as a Detective, joining her husband in the sailing business, teaching navigation theory and practical sailing techniques, travelling the world, delivering yachts, etc, you’d expect an encounter with creatures such as this Argentinian Wide Mouthed Frog to be quite commonplace. Michelle admits, though, that this capture was actually ready and waiting for her in a studio set-up at Knowsley Safari Park, but we’ll not tell anyone.
The stunning shot created a bit of a stir when it won the top prize in The Society of International Nature and Wildlife Photographers’ “Creatures Great and Small” competition in June, along with a ‘Highly Commended’ for her Peacock Tree Frogs. There was a lot of press interest following the result of the competition and her winning image was printed in quite a few newspapers including The Times. Another well known newspaper inadvertently made Michelle the subject of her first “Fake News” article by telling their readers that she’d Michelle’s worldwide travels have rekindled her lifelong passion for photography (and there’s an old Minolta XGM in the loft to prove it) and although her particular interest is nature and macro photography, “I’ll photograph anything I like the look of!” she informs us, hence, when collecting a yacht from Valencia I made time to visit the City of Arts and Sciences to photograph the amazing architecture there. Being on a tight schedule does usually mean that I arrive at scenic spots at the “wrong time” of day, usually mid afternoon! Nevertheless, if there’s something interesting there I will photograph it. “The plus side of sailing is that at sea I get to photograph amazing sunrises and sunsets, however, there are only so many different angles you can take it from on a boat before it gets repetitive! Later this year I will be sailing across the Atlantic Ocean on a yacht to the Caribbean, I’m hoping there will be plenty of sealife to photograph along the way, although I suspect it will be minimal with not even another boat in sight. Still, I will have my camera ready!’

[From an original article by Clive Piggott - Mensa Photography SIG Secretary - Edited by Dave Whenham] Despite the growth of online sites like Facebook, Instagram, Flickr etc. with millions of images posted, it can be difficult to establish meaningful relationships and critique with other photographers. The Mensa Photography SIG offers our members that opportunity. Our main objectives are: to provide an interesting and stimulating newsletter, to help members to enjoy and make the most of their photography, and to give members the opportunity to show others their work. The newsletter is sent out every month. Its primary purpose is to try to provide inspiration to our readers. The newsletter relies totally on members’ contributions. It is heavily image based and gives our members the opportunity to show off their work to fellow photographers, and by doing so to provide inspiration to others. We are not really an equipment/review/technique based publication, but we do welcome articles from members on how they use their gear or software, why they chose it, what they do or don't like about it etc. We are very fortunate to have Dave Whenham LRPS (General Secretary of the Postal Photographic Club, PPC) on board to write a regular column for members. From the outset of our relaunched newsletter (in October 2016) Dave and the PPC have been an in integral part of the Mensa Photography SIG project. The Mensa Photography SIG enjoys a valuable association with the PPC because they complement each other so well. Our newsletter provides an informal readily accessible monthly platform for members to display their work and thoughts. The PPC provides a more formal monthly process of displaying and critiquing photographs. Any members of MENSA who’ve not yet discovered the Photography SIG should contact Clive Piggott (Mensa Photography SIG Secretary) at satsuma14@outlook.com who would be delighted to provide further information.
