Welcome to November’s newsletter

We have another bumper issue filled with great events from around the UK and some online resources for you to enjoy.

You’ll be glad to hear that the team for DPoTY 2019 is beginning to take shape but we still need your help with some key roles. As you know we are planning to take the exhibition on the road after the winners have been announced, giving as many people as possible the chance to enjoy the exhibition. We already have some ideas for locations but would need three more venues to make sure our members get the best chance possible to enjoy the work of the winners.

Concretely we need help with organisation of the winners’ event and help with booking two or three exhibitions around the UK. If you can help with that, if you have a suggestion for a venue or can help in any other way, please email Mark using doc@rps.org.

100 Years On Following the Group’s project to mark 100 years since the start of WWI, we now invite everyone to submit one documentary image created on Sunday, November 11. The project is a chance to compare the world we live in today with that of 100 years ago showing what has changed and what has carried on untouched.

You can submit entries to us using hundredYearsOn@rps.org for inclusion in our on-line gallery until Saturday, December 15.

umentary Group member Simon Hawkins ARPS teaches a daylong street photography workshop covering confidence, ethics, style and takes a look at some modern day street heroes. Simon is offering a 10 per cent discount for Documentary Group members, just email him for more info.

In Your Face

Now that the days are getting much shorter here in the UK, we thought it was the perfect chance to pass on some advice Penny Dixie shared while discussing her project covering the work of the Hedgehog Heroes in London’s Royal Parks.

Until December 22 at The Martin Parr Foundation, Bristol. Shot between 1977 and 1992, In Your Face contrasts close up street photos in the City of London with nearby Brick Lane. Paul Trevors motivation was partly political as this was the era of Margaret Thatcher; she polarised debate on market forces versus community values.

Until January 5 at Huddersfield. In 1989 Stuart Clarke began “The Homes of Football” about home giving a sense of place and about the fans. It was above all about a love for the professional game.

In search of Frankenstein

Until Junary 5 at Impressions Gallery, Bradford. From melting glaciers to nuclear bunkers, this exhibition from Chloe Dewe Mathews reveals the present-day landscape that once inspired Mary Shelleys groundbreaking novel.

Paris Photo-Aperture photobook winners Winners in the three categories of this photobook exhibition in Paris were announced on the 9th of November.

Documentary Group - York

Alternative selfie winners Congratulations to the winners of the Alternative Selfie Competition 2018 Antoine Labb and Adam Dreyer.

Closes January 8, on-line. Photographers of all levels, are invited to show the world through their eyes, to capture the many faces of humanity, and to document the universal expressions of life.

Until January 11 at Lidgett Methodist Church, York. Regular meeting of the York Documentary group.

Plans trains and automobiles

Until January 13 at Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh. Navigating land, sea and air, this exhibition takes a look at the variety of modes of transport used around the world from the 1840s onwards.

Two day Portraiture Workshop

Running January 24 and 25 at The Lancaster Hall Hotel, London. Drawing inspiration from some of the most important and ground breaking photographers, you will learn a variety of camera techniques and approaches that will bring the most out of your portraiture.

Distinctions advisory days Advisory days are intended to offer an opportunity for you to view successful submissions and receive personal guidance on the standard of your work and preparation of your panel.

Events (continued. . . ) When Women Gather. . .

Until January 19 at Conway Hall, London. This collection of photographs comes from Grace Gelder’s archive amassed over eleven years of working on different photographic projects, personal and professional, that depict female-identified people in small and large groups.

East Midlands Contemporary Group

Running January 26 at Methodist Church Hall, Keyworth. This group’s meetings will be held in conjunction with the East Midlands Documentary Group which will allow participants to see a variety of approaches and subject matter in photography.

South East Documentary Group

Running January 27 at Tangmere Village Hall. A chance to discuss the group’s project “A Little Bit of England” focussing on which images to include in a book/exhibition/on-line gallery.

RPS Awards 2019

Closes January 28, on-line. The RPS International Awards are offered annually to individuals who have made significant contributions to the art and science of photography. Make your nominations now.

South East Documentary Group

Running March 17 at Tangmere Village Hall. Jo Teasdale FRPS will be talking about her conceptual project “My Adopted Family”.

A mediative and tactile series, using personal and historical objects to explore memories, inheritance and identity.

Small Town Intertia

Until March 24 at Newcastle Upon Tyne. Jim Mortram has been photographing the lives of people in his community who face isolation and loneliness in their daily lives. His work covers difficult subjects such as disability, addiction and self-harm, but is always filled with hope and dignity, focusing upon the strength and resilience of the people he photographs.

A day with Martin Parr

Running March 30 at Saundersfoot Regency Hall. Martin Parr is a world renowned documentary photographer, photojournalist and photobook collector. He is known for his photographic projects that take an intimate, satirical and anthropological look at aspects of modern life, in particular documenting the social classes of England, and more broadly the wealth of the Western world.

Modern Nature

Until April 22 at Hepworth Gallery, Wakefield. Prints from Simon Roberts’ work “Merrie Albion” are included in this new group exhibition Modern Nature: Photography that explores the merging of urban and rural landscapes in Britain.
