OUR THANKS TO THE THREE SELECTORS
Janey Devine FRPS Having had a career in IT, Janey was an early convert to digital photography and bought one of the first digital cameras in 1998. A few years later she sold her business and was able to combine her love of the sea with her growing passion for photography. Experimenting with a number of techniques she strived to produce an “impression” of the landscape, and was awarded her Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society in 2008 with a panel of images taken in East Anglia. More recently she has become fascinated with documentary photography, and has worked on a number of Social Documentary projects. She currently is the coordinator for the RPS South East Documentary Group and was invited to join the Arena group of photographers in 2016.
Steve Le Prevost FRPS MPAGB AFIAP FIPF
Chris Palmer FRPS EFIAP DPAGB APAGB
Steve’s aim is to challenge the fundamentals and boundaries of photography and to strive to be unique in his preferred style of photographic art. He specialises in three areas, still life, character studies and nautical studies. Most of his artwork is influenced by impressionism, his goal is to create a picture that portrays mood, atmosphere and emotion. Achieving this may involve purposely removing the clinical sharpness that is generally associated with a photograph, or maybe working on the colour palette to allow the colours to bleed and become more fluid.
Chris’ father introduced him to photography and the darkroom when he was about seven years old, and he’s been producing pictures ever since.
Steve has served on the Royal Photographic Society’s Fine Art Panel previously and has had work included within the RPS Permanent Collection, and an invitation to membership of the London Salon of Photography was accepted proudly in 2011.
He became actively involved in club photography in 1979, (as a member of Field End Photographic Society in Ruislip, Middlesex). He gained his Associateship of the RPS with traditional darkroom monochrome prints, and a Fellowship some years later with digital colour prints. Chris serves as Deputy Chair on the RPS Visual Art (Associate and Fellowship) panel; is a designated print expert for online assessments, and provides advice at RPS distinction workshops. A busy national PAGB judge, and popular lecturer, he has visited more than 260 different camera clubs and judged many regional, national and international exhibitions.

that we told you that we had decided to hedge our bets and run the Projected Image Competition on-line again this year. That decision was taken a while ago by our committee when the UK was on the edge of relaxing COVID restrictions and rather than plan a ‘physical’ event that might not happen due to any number of interacting, unknown factors we agreed to opt for the route of certainty and use Zoom again. Perhaps we should not have been surprised that the number of entries for this year’s fray was similar to last time (which was also run on-line) – we received 1873 entries across the 3 classes from 350 members. The ‘Open Colour’ class contained 875, ‘Open Monochrome’ had 684, and ‘Altered Reality’ brought up the rear with 314. There’s always a degree of temerity when running a big competition like this, especially with regard to the technology used. The amount of ‘on edge’ feelings this year were down a tad from last year due to having proved the methods in the previous years but there’s always that possibility of the odd gremlin creeping in. The only evidence of such was a short delay in getting one of our selectors correctly logged into the scoring system at the beginning of the day but after that was sorted out, things went quite smoothly. Our three selectors – Janey Devine FRPS, Chris Palmer FRPS and Steve Le Prevost FRPS all had had a practice session in the previous weeks, so they were properly on-song when we got running and the pace was brisk: the average time for registering all three scores for an image was a swift 6.2 seconds. This speed meant that some viewing members failed to see some visual element during that period. As I explained at the start of the day, this was due entirely to the vagaries of Zoom and the internet in that transmitting the image data at full resolution (essential for our selectors), coupled with the changes on the screen as the score was displayed demanded more internet bandwidth than some members enjoy. This was unfortunate but unavoidable under the circumstances. Nonetheless, as the scores were entered, they were stuffed into the entries database in real-time meaning that every member could see their scores immediately by viewing their entry record in the submission system. After the selectors had run through each class (this being the primary filtering process) they retired to a private Zoom ‘room’ to debate the Gold Medal and ribbon winners. his process is always full of to- and fro-ing with the three selectors settling amicably on the Gold Medal and trophy winners, and then the ever-so-slightly easier task of choosing the winners of their ribbon awards. In addition to the 9 ribbons, 2 Golds and the Wallace Thompson Trophy which were awarded, across the three classes there were 368 other images from 210 members which were ‘accepted’ and which are included in this enlarged Catalogue. The selection day was long: we started at 10:00 and including tea and lunch breaks we finished at 16:30. For anyone who thinks that this is an easy task for a selector sitting at a screen and exercising only a couple of fingers, I would like to correct the misconception! Total concentration is required and picking the winners demands quite some debate and rigour. Our grateful thanks are again transmitted to our doughty trio who performed faultlessly throughout the day. Our last catalogue had printed within it only the top tier of accepted images - i.e. those with a score above an arbitrary threshold - and a text list of the others. As an experiment and due to some changes in production which have eased the costs involved, we have decided to print a catalogue which contains every single accepted image, resulting in this 80 page volume. We would appreciate your feedback on this which will determine whether or not we do the same in the future for both this competition and the Print Exhibition.

GOLD MEDAL (Monochrome) and RAYMOND WALLACE THOMPSON TROPHY
Colin’s comments In July while on a shopping trip with my wife to Warrington’s Golden Square shopping precinct I was allowed to wander off for half an hour. I walked past the now defunct Patisserie Valerie cafe which had been closed for some time. On this day it had a number of shop fitters refurbishing the building and I noticed one person removing the signage in the window. I had with me a Panasonic Lumix TZ90 camera with a x30 optical zoom equivalent to 720mm, so I took a number of images at different focal lengths of the window cleaner from a distance, trying different compositions. I converted the image to Mono with Silver Efex Pro in Photoshop.

An intriguing image, and a superbly caught moment. It is very refreshing to see work that is so very different, and this image is full of fun.
When judging, I try to hit that ‘5’ button when in my mind I feel an image has got to end up in the main awards. I had no hesitation as soon as this picture came up on the screen. Everything about it really works with all the other elements to create this wonderful picture.
A slightly mysterious and imaginative image that possesses a strong feeling of light and vitality. The writing provides context while the dappled light and window markings create a painterly impression. An exciting entry!

Kites Fighting AWARDS

RPS Digital Imaging | Projected Image Competition | 2021
Barrie’s comments This image of two black kites squabbling over a morsel of food in mid-air was captured at the Hawk Conservancy Trust in Hampshire, a science-based charity, working across the globe on birds of prey conservation and habitat protection. Aiming to capture the kites’ stunning agility in flight, I took a series of shots with a handheld Canon 5D Mk IV with a 70-200 F2.8 lens, using AI Servo drive mode, Aperture priority, f5.7, and ISO 800, a combination of settings that produces a sufficiently high shutter speed to capture such fast-moving subjects. Focal length was a shade under 200mm and shutter speed typically around 1/8000sec. Previous experience told me that there would be enough light on the feathers of the birds to use spot metering without too much consequential over-exposure in a sunlit but thinly clouded sky. Using high speed continuous shooting in short bursts, I was able to capture individual birds in flight for several minutes. For this shot, though, the bonus was two kites grabbing the same morsel simultaneously, resulting in a beautiful star-shaped pattern of wings, bodies, feathers and beaks for a moment that was so short, it would completely elude any observer looking on in real time. Post-processing was simple – cropping, giving plenty of room round the two birds, and some minor adjustments in camera raw to highlights, shadows and illumination in the sky. To win the gold model in the open colour class for this image is an honour and a privilege but being able to share that fleeting moment of natural beauty with my many DI Group friends and is - in my book - what photography and the RPS should be all about.

An excellent nature image. A brilliantly caught moment.
It’s quite some feat to have captured a subject like this with such sharpness and at the same time superb composition. There are no distracting background elements to interrupt the scene. Very well accomplished.
A peak of the action natural history shot that nevertheless still has a pictorial appeal due to the lovely shaping of the wings. Technically excellent, I was pleased that an appropriate space had been allowed in the framing and I appreciated the lighting too. A worthy winner.

GOLD MEDAL - Altered Reality
Raymond’s comments This was my “take” on Lockdown and reflected my feelings and the feelings and thoughts of many of us as to how we felt about the situation in which we found ourselves. I decided to try and express my feelings without words and use photography as my way of expressing those emotions. The basis of the image was a photograph taken on an RPS Art Nude Workshop of a model taken though a screen of frosted plastic. In Photoshop this was combined using various blending modes and layers, with an image of a wire mesh fence covered in spider’s webs taken at Gloucester Docks, and the texture is an image of a painted wall from a derelict house. A dark vignette and the sepia tone were applied in Nik Silver Effects Pro 2 to complete the image.

An unusual and imaginative image, and one that is not only visually interesting but also causes the viewer to pause and reflect. It is well executed and thoughtfully put together.
A fantastic composition: the position of all the elements comes together to create a stunning picture. The almost monochromatic nature of the picture really suits the subject matter. A great image, a worthy winner of this category’s gold medal.
An imaginative sepia toned shot with three ingredients, the silhouette, the fence, and the cobwebs. They had been combined in such a way to produce an image that possessed a strong aesthetic appeal, but also a feeling of entrapment. A simple message powerfully told.

In the Bleak Midwinter Julie Pigula FRPS AWARDS Julie’s comments I think most photographers have stories of projects they photographed during lockdown: this is mine. The winter lockdown gave me lots of time to revisit my frost and ice photography with which I gained my Fellowship of the RPS over twenty years ago. Although we saw no snow in Southport where I now live, there was plenty of frost and ice. I could never resist the lure of a coating of frost on a leaf, or patterns created in layers of ice. Once I started taking pictures I was hooked and really enjoyed being out in the garden working with frost and ice again. It had the bonus of making January and February pass very quickly.
this image - I was attracted to the shape, colour and frost on the leaf but also to all the microscopic bubbles in the ice. The picture didn’t need much processing, just some layer adjustments to bring out the shapes and textures in both the ice and leaf.
Janey Devine’s comments A beautiful image - very simple. A wonderful balance in the composition, and lovely colour palette.
This image was shot during a particularly cold spell. A couple of evenings previously, I had placed the American sweetgum leaf on a small metal tray with some water and left it in the garden to freeze. The following morning I took a few images but they were not very interesting, with the same on the second day. However by the third day I was presented with 10

Janey Devine’s comments
This photo was taken on an “urbex” photography trip to Fort de la Chartreuse near Liege in Belgium. The model is Kayleigh Rose. For me the whole point of this shoot was the juxtaposition and contrast of the soft form of the female models against the stark, brutalist, decaying and graffiticovered background of this old army barracks. When we came to this particular room with a wire grill I asked Kayleigh to act as if she was trapped or imprisoned and was pleading to be let out. I carefully arranged it so that the eyes, nose and mouth aligned with the gaps in the wire grill. Post-processing in Silver Efex Pro was carried out to heighten the gritty and dramatic feel to the image.
A very different image with immediate impact. It allows us to create a story in our heads and makes us stop and consider. An image full of drama and emotion.

Dark Trees Morag Forbes LRPS AWARDS Morag’s comments I walk past the trees in this image most days on my morning walk, and love to see them change with the seasons and the weather. On the day I took this it was misty, which helped to obscure some of the clutter roundabout, and gave me a good base image to work on. I had taken this image several years ago, and it was only at the beginning of this year that I returned to it, as I used the time in lockdown to work on my processing and photoshop skills. I enjoyed many webinars during this time which definitely helped preserve my sanity! I learned how to make my own textures and apply them in images. The textures I used for this image was the back of a tombstone, gradually layered together to achieve the effect I was looking for. I also learned how to make brushes in photoshop, so another dormant image became the birds 12
in this image. I used photoshop camera raw to add light and shade where I wanted it, the final image also made up part of my successful Licentiate panel in April.
Janey Devine’s comments A very simple image, but one full of mood. The birds work really well and the fence posts lead you through the scene. Very well executed and an image I would love to have on my wall.

Flowers In a White Vase AWARDS
Anne Turner
Anne’s comments This image was taken during the first Lockdown in natural light in my conservatory. I had received a bouquet of flowers from my family for Mother’s Day, I wanted to create a lasting memory of how beautiful the flowers were and of the sentiments they represented. Little did I know how long it would be before we would all be able meet up again as a family! I had recently changed my camera set-up from Nikon to Fuji, so I was experimenting with my new XT4 and 18135mm lens. I could see the image in my mind’s eye but getting there was an evolution. I knew I wanted to use the white vase and stand it on the white painted Butler’s table. I started with the three hydrangeas but quickly added the white rose to hide the RPS Digital Imaging | Projected Image Competition | 2021
stems mainly but I loved the impact it made. I also thought the small florets in the foreground added more interest and balance. The image was imported into Lightroom and then Photoshop where I used layers to add a texture made from ridged paper - I think the lines complemented those on the vase. I also carried out a little cloning, changed opacity and tried out various blending modes.
Steve Le Prevost’s comments Soft, subdued and very subtle colours and tones all very delicately presented. My sort of picture, I am sure that it would make a great print on anyone’s wall. A well deserved ribbon winner. 13

Two Metre Rule Lyn Newton LRPS AWARDS Lyn’s comments
Steve Le Prevost’s comments
I took the image Two Metre Rule on one of the rare opportunities last year when we were allowed to travel out of our designated COVID zone. I was people watching near a spiral outside staircase in Newcastle and over a period of time I noticed that everybody was keeping a uniform distance from each other. But, when they stepped off the staircase, this carefully ordered safety walk disappeared as they joined the throng and, in my mind, became swallowed up in a miasma of virus which almost imperceptibly engulfed them. I used layers of different textures at different opacities to build up this dystopian vision. It was definitely a marker of how I was feeling at the time!
The whole feeling of this image is very appealing. It’s the sort of picture that really excites me. The symmetry of the figures on either side, the girl about to walk out of frame is where I rest my eye.

The grungy effect adds so much mood to the overall picture, particularly around the top of the frame and the bottom centre. Love it!

Steve Le Prevost’s comments
Whilst visiting Verona a while ago, I returned to my hotel just before a downpour. When viewed from my second floor room, the colourful umbrellas against the grey pavement below caught my eye.
Quite impressionistic, it portrays a rainy day but sunshine seems about to shine though. The vibrance of the umbrella colours makes for a striking effect and the treatment is so suited to the image. A great picture and very well presented.
The resulting photograph inspired me to apply a watercolour filter in Photoshop so as to emphasize the atmosphere of the scene. Whilst this gave a pleasing result, I felt that the image could benefit from some further adjustments using an array of PS tools so as to give the effect that the paper on which the image was printed was also ‘Soaked Through’.

Hearth and Home Lorna Brown FRPS AWARDS Lorna’s comments This lovely lady was at the Black Country Living Museum relating the story of the cottage we were in, and very animated she was too. I was aiming for a portrait that reflected her engaging character and this seemed to capture her well. But it was a freezing February day with a clear blue sky and the low winter sun streaming in the window behind her burnt out her beautiful hair. Although the light bouncing back onto her face was helpful, given the dark interior.
Using the image that best caught her face, I transplanted hair from another less exposed shot, plus a section of her arm and chair using masks. I also took out a bland fireplace section by overlapping a duplicate of the image to cover it up. General processing as well gave the final image. I was really pleased it worked and that selectors liked it.
I didn’t want her to pose, and chatting as she was made it impossible to use bracketed exposure. But with the camera (Canon EOS 6D) on Aperture Priority (f5 at ISO 640) shooting fast and altering position slightly gave me a range of exposures. To produce the final image then called for some Photoshop surgery.
Drawing upon a nostalgic theme, this beautiful portrait captured the spirit of this lady, and included an environmental support that contributed to the narrative of the image. Taken under tricky lighting conditions, it was technically very well handled too.

White Stallion AWARDS
Helen Otton LRPS
Helen’s comments Horses and dogs are my great love and the joy of watching them run or jump with mane (or spaniel ears) flowing is hard to beat - trying to capture that emotion and the essence of their character in an image is my ongoing challenge! Whilst I love being in the great outdoors with a camera, this year I took the opportunity to spend more time at the computer looking at editing some of my favourite shots. With the white stallion, my intention was to simplify the background and focus on his glorious flowing mane and beautiful intelligent and aware eye. For me it is the eye that provides an emotional connection and the focus of the image, whilst the flowing mane gives a sense of freedom and captures the essence of a stallion. I enjoy high-key images and the mood that they convey, often a positive sense of calm, sometimes ethereal and delicate. In
RPS Digital Imaging | Projected Image Competition | 2021
this case, by isolating the horse from the background I felt it would give it a more artistic touch and as the day I took the shot it was bright but cloudy it made it easier to create the high-key image I wanted. I used Lightroom to do the basic edits to exposure, whites and blacks, enhance the eye and add texture and reduce highlights to part of his coat and mane and then in Photoshop added a texture on low opacity - the texture was just a very simple photo of a textured wall at home. Finally, a crop that I hope shows the Spirit of the Horse.
Chris Palmer’s comments Although I have judged many images depicting white horses, the stylish simplicity of this single stallion and the restrained tonality created an artistic powerful impression. I was pleased that my fellow selectors felt similarly.

Fading Away Jane White ARPS AWARDS Jane’s comments My passion is floral photography and for 2021, I set myself a challenge to only use my mobile phone camera. This image was created from a simple grab shot taken with an iPhone 11 Pro using the back dual wide camera lens f/1.8 with a focal length 4.25mm (60.0mm in 35mm) No flash, just spot metering and auto white balance. No set up, just using natural light from the window. This particular tulip had drooped so much and was about to be discarded but then it caught my eye and I began to visualise an image. All my work is created on my iPad Pro using snippets from my collection of ‘apps’. The final image is the sent to Photoshop for resizing and printing. The background is my own and 18
I was keen to have it blend with the shades of the flower. So, I selected some shades from the petals, added another background layer, some texture and then blended the layers together. The background layer became the front, then by adding another layer behind, I used brushes paint through to create the final image.
Chris Palmer’s comments A very gentle image with a harmonious colour palette. The blended textures supported the sympathetic pastel tones within the fading tulip, an immediate top score from me! RPS Digital Imaging | Projected Image Competition | 2021
