Of course, the Leica SL2 with Vario-Elmarit 1:2.8-4/24-90 ASPH is always in my luggage on my travels, and I set out on one of the days to turn to architectural photography among other things. While trying to harmonise the architecture of the tall glass façade with the sculpture in front of it and compose the image composition, I noticed that an aeroplane was crossing the sky at precisely the right spot. I had the photographer’s luck to be in the right place at the right moment and was able to compose this photo without having to resort to the dodgy (what a metaphor) tool of Photoshop. I didn’t have to build a plane in the sky - it was just there.

DEAR MEMBERS, A SHORT TRIP THROUGH GERMANY This could be the title of the current issue of the e-Magazine (III /2021).

Subtitle: “O’zapft is !” means “The next eMagazine is ready”. Let’s start in the south of Germany and let’s visit the traditional Munich Oktoberfest The opening photo and the series of three shots on page 11 impressively remind us that the Oktoberfest was cancelled this year and did not take place. The photographs that follow and the texts surrounding the pictures then show us, as compensation, what it could have looked like.

The strong contrast to the opening photo with empty beer tables shows the tent filled with visitors on page 14 or double-page 22/23 and other photographically dense impressions with Maßkrug, food, costumes, carousels and stalls.

The image of the lady taking the shot - an extraordinary “treat”.

Let’s continue our little trip through Germany, arriving in the middle of Germany and stopping off in Siegerland.

Horst Witthüser, the first President of the Germany Chapter and currently Secretary for many years, shows us his AIPS Distinction. Our heartfelt congratulations on the successful, compositionally excellent portfolio with a sequence of incredibly considered and captured architectural details. I can understand only too well his initial disappointment that the British parent company rejected his portfolio.

So congratulations once again - you can wear the acquired AIPS title with great pride.

Another member of Chapter Germany introduces himself in our member interview: Martin Gerling LRPS. He accompanies us further into the middle of Germany to the landscapes and sites in the Ruhrgebiet. He shows us the change of this region with its buildings converted into industrial monuments and, on the other hand, also its quiet moments where nature reclaims the industrially abandoned space.

It is followed by a short portrait of the author and photographer Dr Leo Ruickbie with three competition entries. It arouses curiosity for more.

And as usual, unfortunately, only five members of the Germany Chapter show works created in the last quarter. “This could become more” is my call.

The eMagazine closes with impressive photographs by Grahame Soden ARPS. Unique trim and large sceneries of people, places, and objects end our little photographic journey through Germany and have been put together in an exhibition called “SEEN”.

And so I bid you farewell for this quarter with warm regards.

O

riginally from Oxfordshire in England, Paul Joyce moved to the Munich area back in 1993 and has come to the point that he has lived more years in Germany than he has in the UK. A lot has changed over the years since he first arrived in this country but life is so far treating him well.

Being so close to many countries, the mountains and experience true seasonal weather, it's no wonder people who come here stay longer than expected.

“Wiesn”

In 1810, the people of Munich were invited to join in with a royal wedding celebration on the fields by the city gates.

In honour of the bride the fields were named Theresienwiese (“Theresa’s Meadow”) and the name still exists today.

Over the years the locals shortened the name, simply to the Wiesn.

To the rest of the world, this 16-18 day event held every year in Munich is known as the Oktoberfest, the world’s largest beer festival and funfair.

Originally running in October, it was pulled forward because days are longer and warmer at the end of September, it now lasts from mid or late September to the first weekend in October with more than 6 million people attending from around the world.

“The Parade”

To honour the marriage of Prince Ludwig and Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in 1810, a parade took place.

Since 1850, the parade has become an annual event and an important part of the Oktoberfest celebrations.

Eight thousand people mostly from Bavaria - dress in traditional costumes and walk the streets through the centre of Munich to the Oktoberfest grounds.

This event shows the decorated horse teams of the breweries and the bands that play in the festival tents. The parade always takes place on the first Saturday of the Oktoberfest.

“O’zapft is!”

Since 1950 after the parade has finished, the Lord Mayor of Munich opens the first beer barrel in the Schottenhammel tent at exactly 12:00.

After tapping the barrel and with a shout of "O'zapft is!" ("It's tapped!") the Oktoberfest is declared open.

Traditionally, the Bavarian MinisterPresident is served the first litre of beer.

Then in the other tents, the first barrels are tapped and beer is served to the visitors. Many people queue outside the tents on the first day from as early as 7 am and when to let in have to sit at the tables until the beer is served.

“German Beer Purity Law”

Only beer conforming to the Reinheitsgebot, and brewed within the city limits of Munich can be served at the Munich Oktoberfest.

The Reinheitsgebot or "German Beer Purity Law" in English,

is the collective name for a series of regulations limiting the ingredients in beer in Germany.

Only water, hops and barley should be used to brew Bavarian beer.

“Quiet Oktoberfest”

To keep the Oktoberfest and the beer tents comfortable for the elderly and families, the concept of the “quiet Oktoberfest” was developed in 2005.

Until 6:00 pm, the orchestras in the tents only play quiet brass music or traditional folk music.

Only after that may pop or electric music be played. The music played in the afternoon is limited to 85 Decibels.

“Facts” • 42 hectares in size • 72% of the people are from Bavaria, 15% are from surrounding EU countries and the rest is made up of non-European countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia • The most attendance at the Oktoberfest was in 1985 when approx. 7.1 million people visited • The largest tent at the event was the PschorrBräu-Rosl in 1913 where approx. 12,000 people could fit. Now the largest is the Hofbräu with approx. 10,000 capacity • Powered via 43 kilometres of cable and 18 partially underground transformer stations, the consumption is equal to approx. 13% of the daily electrical needs of the city of Munich

• In 2017: 184th Oktoberfest: The official estimate is that 6.2 million guests visited the Oktoberfest • The lost and found office reported 4,055 items, amongst them were 1,300 passports, 620 pieces of clothing, 600 wallets, 520 smartphones and cellphones, 360 keys, 325 pairs of glasses, 120 umbrellas, 100 bags and rucksacks, 95 pieces of jewellery, and 15 cameras • Tent security confiscated roughly 120,000 mugs at the exits - At the Ochsenbraterei tent, 127 oxen and 59 calves at the Kalbsbraterei were consumed • According to the breweries, the Oktoberfest guests drank 7.5 million litres of beer • Nearly 1,000 tons of rubbish is generated annually from the Oktoberfest

DISTINCTIONS I submitted my Associate level assessment panel to the RPS on June this year. Unfortunately, it was not accepted.

Horst Witthueser AIPS Although the panel was praised for its presentation, technical deficiencies were criticized: “The assessors applauded the interesting and novel idea, they also commended the applicant on the Statement of Intent, which was accurately reflected in the submitted images. It was interesting to see a mix of the

literal and the abstract which was commented on by several assessors. Despite this variation, the presentation was seen as cohesive and consistent. The balance of the images was similarly favorably commented on, and the transition from the blue images on the top row to the amber images in the middle and bottom rows

was also appreciated. Whilst the applicant clearly demonstrated an individual vision and a sound aesthetic awareness, concerns were raised about certain technical issues. (halo, over sharpening) There is much to admire in this submission, but it is important that the highlighted technical weaknesses are addressed.”

This disappointed me greatly, as I had placed my emphasis on the coherence and expressiveness of the statement and panel.

The technical refinement was only of limited importance to me.

Therefore I decided to stay true on my course, make the statement even more precise and submit the new panel (new arrangement and exchange of 2 photos) to the Irish

Now to the actual subject of the photographic panel!

24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the 40 motorway chapels dotted around Germany motorways offer the traveller the opportunity to stop and rest. A particularly attractive one is the chapel"Siegerland" in Germany.

The bright white, polygonal facade of this motorway chapel catches the eye from afar.

As a pictorial wooden structure, it defies the noisy surroundings of a hotel, a fast-food restaurant,a petrol station and even a gambling casino.

The architects’ design

The architects’ design is based on the simple pictogram of a church, which is considered to be the standard signposting for motorway chapels.

This three-dimensional implementation presents itself as a stylized white silhouette both towards the motorway and the service area. In contrast to the factual outer form, the interior is made of simple wood and symbolizes warmth and shelter.

The filigree, wooden inner dome conveys a sense of security; it opens onto the altar area, which appears almost de-materialised due to its white design.

Light falls through the two spires of the tower into the church space in such a way that one experiences a different inviting atmosphere at any time of the day.

Basically, the chapel has square walls, but all that curved timber causes the semi-circular interiors.

The calm atmosphere is supported by the seats, tables and knee-boards, which are all made of the same wood as the beams.

STATEMENT OF INTENT A very special motorway chapel Motorway chapels are quite common in Germany. Most of them are built in a traditional style like small churches, but a few fall out of this concept.

One of these special chapels is presented here. I invite you to join me on my tour and get an impression of the exterior and interior of this chapel.

Approaching the chapel, one is struck by a white, geometric exterior almost in origami style.

On entering, one senses a very calming atmosphere due to the interior wooden construction.

Truck drivers and business travellers - all can escape the busy motorway to come to rest in this cosy building.

The filigree, wooden interior dome conveys a sense of security - it opens up to the altar area, which appears almost dematerialized by its pure white design.

All photos were taken in natural light to preserve this intimate atmosphere. My panel shows the contrast between the clean straight edges outside and the symmetrically stretched arches inside.

Question No. 1: How did you get into photography?

In 1978 I was given my first SLR camera, a RICOH SINGLEX II with three interchangeable lenses. This equipment helped me to learn the technique of photography.

After a family-related break, I switched to Canon in the mid-90s and intensified my activities in this hobby again. Since 2005 I have been taking digital photographs.

Question no. 2: Who are your photographic role models?

There are no fixed role models that I emulate.

Instead, I like to read specialist literature and pick up tips and tricks through it. Contact with photo friends also gives me the opportunity for further development.

Question no. 3: What do you like to photograph most?

I prefer to photograph objects that I can capture with a lot of calm.

If I can become one with the camera, it is an almost perfect photo for me.

Question no. 4: Is there anything you don’t like to photograph at all?

I don’t particularly appreciate photographing people; it often gets hectic.

Question no. 5: How do you approach a shooting? Do you choose the location/subject in advance, or do you just drive blindly somewhere and start taking pictures?

I usually plan the subject or location.

But it also happens that I unexpectedly see an object that I then have to photograph immediately.

Question no. 6: Are there a few dream places you would like to photograph?

In Germany, for example, I would like to photograph the Rakotz Bridge in Kromlau Park or the Götzschtal Bridge near Netzschkau in winter.

In addition, I would like to make a more extended round trip through Ireland, Scotland and other European countries to have the time I need at the places I want to photograph. w

Question no.7: How necessary is high-quality equipment for you?

Question no. 8: What 3 tips would you give to someone who is just getting interested in photography?

A good eye for spotting the essentials is more critical than having up-to-date photographic equipment.

1. You should look for a job near your home and then gain your first photographic experience with it.

But, of course, good equipment makes it easier to work in less than optimal lighting conditions.

3. Show your photos to other photographers to improve your skills through criticism.

ocusing in recent years on photography for editorial, I decided to try my chances with several competitions this year.

The successful pictures present an interesting development when

THE MOMENT BEFORE THE PANDEMIC seen together: from innocent, pre-pandemic times in Vietnam in December 2019 just as COVID-19 was spreading in China ('Ha Long Hot Pot') to the final days before the first lockdown in 2020, represented by two gloomy photographs taken in

Hamburg ('Ausgang' and 'Zukunft').

Although taken for different reasons and submitted to different competitions, the three photographs capture the moment before the pandemic.

Selected by LoosenArt for their 'Language' Competition and exhibited at the Millepiani Gallery, Rome, Italy, in May 2021.

Title: Zukunft Caption: At a construction site in Hamburg, Germany, the distorted reflections of windows in windows challenge the bold slogan about the future ('Zukunft' in German), as the COVID-19 pandemic spreads, a struggle between intention and reality also reflected in the tonal contrasts. Selected for the RPS 'Windows on the World' International Members Competition, August 2021.

BIOGRAPHY Currently a Visiting Fellow in Psychology at the University of Northampton, Dr Leo Ruickbie specialises in controversial areas of human belief and experience. He is the author of several books, the most recent being Angels in the Trenches: Superstition, Spiritualism and the Supernatural During the First World War. Actively involved in the field of parapsychology, he is a Professional Member of the

Parapsychological Association and a Council Member of the Society for Psychical Research. As the Editor of the Magazine of the Society for Psychical Research, he has also developed and encouraged greater use of photography, including running a photography competition in 2017 with a judging panel including Dr Michael Pritchard, FRPS, then Chief Executive of the Royal Photographic

Society, and sponsorship from Olympus.

He has had a diverse range of clients for his photographic work, including estate agents, tourist boards and charities, and recent highlights include being shortlisted for the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2021. He can be found online at https://ruickbie.com.

DEADLINES ENTRIES RPS JOURNAL

You would like to submit pictures to the quarterly project “Members Fotowork”?

After the RPS Journal is published by an external company, the rules for contributions and the recording of events are more restrictive.

Here is a list of the deadlines for each quarter: 4TH QUARTER 2021: 31.12.2021 1ST QUARTER 2022: 31.03.2022 2ND QUARTER 2021: 30.06.2021 Please send us the photos with a minimum resolution of 3000 x 3000 pixels and 300dpi.

For the naming of the photos please use following naming convention: FIRST3LETTERSOFYOURSURENAME_ QNUMBEROFQUARTER-YEAR_IMAGETITLE.JPG

As an indication, a lead time of 2 months can be assumed for the inclusion of articles in the journal.

Events of the German Chapter are automatically included in the journal if they are published on the Chapter website under the heading Event.

Here the lead time is about one month before the publication of the journal.

Please note this when planning events and articles.

DEADLINES ENTRIES eMAGAZINE

Since the magazine is published by the chapter itself, we are very flexible concerning the time schedule for submission of texts, pictures and dates for events.

In order not to make the editor’s life too complicated, we ask for a sufficient amount of time in advance.

As a rule, contributions should be received by the editor about 30 days before the publication date.

Otherwise, simply inform us that you need some additional time for the creation of a contribution.

The publication dates, please take from the adjacent column.

Each participant is responsible for compliance with the Data Protection Ordinance and the Copyright Act. Participants please send the photos to the following email: germany@rps.org
