RPS Benelux Chapter Summer Challenge 2023

This year’s Summer Challenge encouraged our members and friends to photograph nature – the only rule was that the images should not include people. All techniques were allowed, whether that be ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) or abstract, minimalistic/intimate landscapes, panoramas, macro, etc. 40 images where submitted by 14 photographers. You were asked to vote on the submitted images with three points in each category. •

Technical Points – is the photo sharp where it should be sharp, how is use of depth of field (DoF), colour, composition etc. 1 – 10 points with 10 being the highest.

Aesthetic Points – Is the photo pleasing you? Subjective opinion. 1 – 10 points with 10 being the highest.

Theme Points – Does the photo fit the theme in your opinion? 1 – 10 points with 10 being the highest

Not only are we sending in our best photos for the challenge, by voting ourselves, we are learning how to ‘see’ the photos. By looking at the three categories, Technical, Aesthetic and Theme (content), you are being encouraged to think more and hopefully also learn indirectly. Doing this often is helpful and develops you as a photographer, you are getting new skills without even knowing it! Thanks for participating, be it in the voting and/or with your beautiful photos. Please enjoy the 10 best photos. Congratulations to the winners!! Please follow the link for all the 40 photos:

Introducing our newest member

Issue 3 Spring 2024

I recently joined RPS and was happy to discover the Benelux chapter. I’m looking forward to studying and working together! Coming from two generations of photographers (my grandfather was a member of the New York Camera Club in the 1920’s), it wasn’t surprising that I started photographing at a young age. When I turned 21, I left the States and ended up in the Netherlands.

Photography took a back seat in my life, as I was busy building a career and raising a family. After retirement in 2012, I realised that I had only one, allconsuming passion: going out in nature with my camera.

Issue 3 Spring 2024

Chris Renk, the Germany Chapter Organiser and Carol Olerud FRPS, the Benelux Chapter Organiser organised a workshop weekend in Munich to photograph the Underground. Chris is an expert and taught us how to photograph the many wonderful underground stations all around Munich. Chris had prepared a talk in 2020 which Carol watched, he showed his work and said he was willing to give workshops. This did not fall on deaf ears! Due to Covid-19 it took some patience but we did manage to find a suitable long weekend.

Stations

A call up was sent out and we got a group of five people signed up. This amount was perfect as we could all stay in one group in the underground stations and not be too much in each other’s way!

Munich Subway weekend workshop

Issue 3 Spring 2024

23

Chris shared his knowledge, gave tips on where to look and enjoyed seeing how we then went about it! We spent at least an hour per station as we needed to wait for trains to leave and empty the platforms of people. Long exposures, using tripods (or not) technical tips etc. Chris also organised that we had full permissions to photograph underground and that we are able to use the photos for all our purposes. (Small fee paid)

24

Munich Subway weekend workshop

Lunch breaks were above ground and Chris directed us to wonderful Biergartens where we could sit and have our lunch. Beer tasting was possible as well! Day one was a travel day and we met each other for the first time. A walk into the old city and a first viewing of the Marienplatz station, another stop at an impressive staircase and finally dinner; we were set for a wonderful few days ahead. Chris took us to restaurants – three nights in a row! We had wonderful weather, however we spent most of our time underground! We spent two full days underground. The last day being a travel day, some of us had some time in the morning to explore before we all headed home. We were very lucky and could make great use of the €9 per month public transport promotion.

The group connected well and after our Zoom session on 13 July to look at results, we can safely say an excellent time was had by all! Fabulous photos were taken and we were very happy with our guide, Thanks so much Chris Renk! Enjoy our photos! Munich Subway weekend workshop

Carol Olerud FRPS I had seen the presentation given by Chris Renk about the Munich Underground and got very inspired. It was a good opportunity to go on a workshop weekend with him. So, I decided to go ahead and organise one. Five of us went, we took trains and planes to get there. We had a few different hotels all close together near the central station. So, it was easy to meet and easy access to the underground.

The workshop was quite a technical one, use of tripod a must! Wide-angle lenses useful, or pano stitching. Slow exposures and/or high iso. Good composition is a must but mostly learning to ‘see’ the beauty of the underground. Patience to wait for trains to come and go, empty platforms etc. We experienced good food, good company and generally felt that the weekend was a great success.

I took a great variety of photos. I also did not bring a tripod. This was a challenge but I think I got away with it. I took both mobile phone photos and I used my Canon 5DMIV with my 16-35mm lens.

I found photographing the Munich metro an interesting experience and challenging. Previous to this trip, I did the majority of my photography handheld, even when my main interest was HDR photography, ICM and my ARPS project was a documentary project about my eye sight. I needed to use Lightroom to straighten my images as I found it difficult to level the tripod correctly.

The fact that each metro station that we visited had a different architecture gave me a lot of opportunities to create interesting images. The guidance that I got from Chris was excellence, his knowledge of the various metro stations helped me to get the best shots of each.

Although I think that a wider lens would have been useful as well, I had only a 24 to 105 mm lens.

This trip allowed me to experiment with a new project that I had been thinking about starting, a series of self-portraits using a tripod, which I have further developed in the year and half since June 2022.

After the weekend, I was exhausted, after photographing more 12 stations over two days, the long train journeys from/to Amsterdam and my illness. Despite all this I found the weekend very enjoyable and worthwhile, extremely glad that I did attend.

Weekend Trip to Maastricht

From Viewfinders eMagazine December 2022 Maastricht, a vibrant university town in the Netherlands, just a stone’s throw from the Belgian border, and home since many years to Simon Pugh – former President of Viewfinders and member of the Royal Photographic Society’s Benelux chapter. Simon had coordinated with both to set up a meticulously organised photo trip open to members of both organisations, over the weekend of 14 to 16 October. With a flexible start (to accommodate those like me who had business to do at the “Photodays” trade-show in Brussels that weekend) 3 early birds met at Maastricht’s main train station midafternoon on Friday for a short walk to the market square, where the group grew to 4. The walk Friday afternoon and early evening was a kind of appetizer for the area we would be visiting on Sunday morning, ending with a nice dinner back in the market square, where the whole merry band of 6 finally got together. After a good night sleep, we met in front of the train station on Saturday morning, under grey though dry skies, for a walk through the old and new residential

parts of the city. While the blazing

colours of autumn struggled to penetrate the grey air, this could not suppress the enjoyment of the city’s architecture, punctuated with insider info from Simon. A brief if heavy burst of rain in the afternoon heralded a gradual improvement in the light, culminating in a truly spectacular blue hour near the Maas/Meuse river, as delightful aperitif for a cosy dinner together. Sunday morning brought clear blue skies and equally clear sunshine, showing off autumn colours at their best! The walk this time took us through the city’s old industrial area, some parts of which still expressing that strangely photogenic beauty of decay, while others undergoing redevelopment, to become attractive and modern culturerich retreats. After lunch in an exelectricity generating station, now a cinema and its mandatory culinary infrastructure, our merry band made its way back towards the town centre, where our various ways parted. Thanks to Simon for the organisation of this wonderful trip, and his expert guidance throughout! by Joaquim Capitao and Alun Foster

Weekend Trip to Maastricht

My memories of the weekend Katherine Maguire ARPS Maastricht being only 2 and half hours from Amsterdam, I decided to join the weekend trip organised by Simon. I chose a hotel close to the railway station, which allowed me to attend the Friday afternoon walk. Starting out from the station, we walked towards market

Issue 3 Spring 2024 square, where we stopped for coffee break before continuing on to old Sphinx building and then to the area behind the art cinema. We found a lot of interesting buildings and passageways to photograph. With the aid of my walking stick I walked with the others back to market square where Simon had arranged for us to eat at a very nice restaurant.

Weekend Trip to Maastricht

On the Saturday morning, we all met once again at the railway station. We explored the newer part of the city, crossing the Maas via “Hoge Brug” and then to “HelPoort”. We walked along “Sint Bernardusstraat”, until we reached the Graanmarkt, and if I remember right, that is where we stopped for Lunch. After lunch we wandered down to the “Leeuwenmolen”, where we sheltered from a brief rain shower. We then moved onto to the street beside the old city wall photographing as we went. When we reached “De Bosquetplein”, I needed to rest, So I took an hour break from the walk whilst the others climbed the stairs to the top of city wall. After being rested I walked along the “Looiersgracht” to meet up with the others at the “Ezelmarkt”. We walked past the Maastricht University and to the “Basiliek van Sint Servaas” church and then to the “Vrijthof”, where we stopped at a cafe to have coffee. While the rest of group went off to do some more photography during the “blue hour”, I went back to my

hotel to have a rest, later re-joining the group in the evening for dinner. On the Sunday morning, we met once again at station. We walked via the “Alexander Battalaan”, a street covered in golden brown leaves and “Sint Maartenslaan” to the river and crossing it via “Wilhelminabrug”. Then walking along the Maas to the “De Bassin” the harbour area. Here is the “Landbouw Belang” building, which is a mixture of old industry and new, with some examples of striking graffiti. We then move on to the “Boschstraatkwartier”, which used to house the ceramics industry of Maastricht, which has been recently renovated. We stopped for lunch at Lumière, the city’s arthouse cinema. After lunch our route took us back to old Sphinx building, then to “Frontensingel” and “Boschstraat” before leading us finally back to “de Bassin”. We finished with a walk along the “Maaspromenade”. That was the end of the walk.

55

Who are you?

Carol Olerud FRPS, born in Brisbane, Australia in 1962. I was really happy to receive my first camera in 1974. Since then, I’ve been rather fanatic about photography. Only in 1997 did I first join a local photo club. That was the start of a hobby that has gotten even more out of hand. I began participating in competitions, workshops, mentorships, courses, photo trips, expositions, making photo books and more. Since then I joined many more groups, such as the National Group Documentary Photography of the Dutch Fotobond (where I actually am the coordinator of since 2018), the photographers collective Visie+, Photo Group De Verbeelding, a smaller group called LeVeL5 and I’ve been a member of a Masterclass group as well. The Royal Photography Society (RPS) is my most recent membership. In 2018 I gained the Associate Distinction with a panel of 15 photos. In 2021 I gained the Fellowship Distinction with a body of 20 photos. I also became the Organiser of the Benelux Chapter. With all these groups and clubs, I meet very many like-minded people.

Technical

I I

Do you think technique is important?

You need to know the rules to be able to break them.

What equipment do you use?

I have a Canon 5DMIV with fav lens 16-34mm f2.8L For reportage work I use a 28-70mm f2.8L, a 100mm f2.8 Macro lens or a 50mm f1.4 lens. I also have a 24-105mm f4L lens, which I hardly use and a 70-200mm f2.8L lens as well. And my iPhone 11 Prox Max of course.

I I

And what software?

I started with Photoshop, but now basically only use LightRoom Classic on my Mac.

How do you edit your photos?

I do my editing in LightRoom Classic, I print my photos with my Epson Stylus Pro 3880. I try to edit as little as possible. I shoot in RAW and basically adjust minor things. The original image from the camera needs to already be pretty good, as if taking a slide image in the analogue time. Well exposed etc. This saves a lot of time when working behind the PC.

Inspirational

I I I

Where lies your heart?

Martin Parr is pretty much my most favorite photographer! But I admire many, my bookshelves are full!

Do you have your own style?

I do, I think after so long I have developed a certain style. Over the years you develop that. Nice isn't it when people recognize a photo from your hand!

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Everywhere! Photo books, newspapers, museums, expositions, presentations etc. Being a member of all the groups where you meet people. During the whole Covid period I watched many Zoom sessions, mostly with the RPS, they interviewed a lot of photographers. I also Zoomed with most of my other groups, it was a brilliant way to keep contact.

I

Does your project start with an idea or with a loose image?

Both. Sometimes I have an idea for a project. I now am working on something which is taking a longer time but I also just bump into things too. Because I take so many photos, series develop, I tend to observe many subjects, so I collect photos. It can be that I want to tell a story which I then photograph in one session.

I

When is your project finished?

When you have told the story. You feel when you are done. There is nothing more to add to the series.

58

I

The Dark Rooms of...

Issue 3 Spring 2024

During your project, do you already know how it ends?

That really depends on the story. On my newest project I’m not sure yet.

Future

I

What is your favorite photo and why?

This is one of the first photos a Mentor said was very good. This was at the start of my photographic journey. It is of my children when they were young and I just love this photo. It has a story, it’s funny too. Who takes such a photo, instead of helping the child first?

I

What do you want to achieve?

First and foremost, I want to enjoy working with images and make pictures I am satisfied with myself. Recognition from others, although caressing, is never the goal. I now have a number of people who give feedback on my work, which I really appreciate and which I can really build on. That is very valuable. Not the likes and the "nice picture" but the

really well-reasoned comments. Rather tell me what you don't like and why than circling around and trying to protect me. I have the occasional project ideas that I still want to work on, but at the moment I mostly lack time. The advantage is that those ideas will take much more shape over

I

time. That should result in more feasible projects, right?

What would you like to know from others? You may ask one photographer one question. What would that be?

I would like to hear what ways well-known photographers have when they are in a creative slump. If photography provides bread on the table, there is obviously more pressure to perform. Where do they get their inspiration and how do they deal with lack of inspiration? Who would I ask? To my idol Anton Corbijn for sure.
