In this issue we present the Creative Eye Group’s annual exhibition for 2019 - and what a pleasure it has been to put together. This is a celebration of the vast range of styles, subject matter and techniques that our membership produces. There is a common thread that runs through this bewildering array of images though, and that is the freedom to express. I thought it would be interesting to see how different photographers have approached similar themes, so I’ve loosely grouped the images into similar styles, subject or approach - while other pages are just a potpourri of creativity!

CHAIRMAN
A
warm welcome to the Members’ Annual Exhibition edition of the magazine. This year, we were honoured to have the Editor of Photography News, William Cheung FRPS, as our selector. With over four hundred images to judge, William handled the selection process superbly, resulting in an outstanding Exhibition. Many congratulations to the award winners and to all those who had images selected. In March, an excellent article about the Group and its Exhibition was published in issue 64 of Photography News and I was overwhelmed and delighted for the Group when we were given a double page spread. I would like to thank William Cheung FRPS for giving the Group this fantastic opportunity and timing its publication to coincided with the big Photography Show in Birmingham, which was a great coup for the Group and Society. The Exhibition opened in April at Wingfield Barns in Suffolk and will continue its tour to the Smethwick Photographic Society in the West Midlands and to the Edinburgh Photographic Society in Great King Street, later on in the year. Our Exhibition Secretary, Matthew Clarke, can provide a slideshow of the complete Exhibition, which can be made available to show at regional and overseas members’ meetings, so please get in touch with Matthew if you would like to show the Exhibition in your Region or Chapter. The Exhibition can also be viewed on the Group’s website. I would like to thank the Creative Eye Group Committee members for their hard work and dedication in making the Exhibition a great success, and to Steve Varman who had the mammoth task of producing this excellent magazine. Please keep an eye on the Group’s website and publications for upcoming events. The Members’ Open Day is on Sunday 9th June at Whittlesford and we are hosting a day with photographer, Vanda Ralevska, on Sunday 6th October, also at Whittlesford. Between these events, we have several field trips organised, including visits to Norfolk, Glasgow, London and Bristol. I wish you much enjoyment with your photography over the coming months and I thank you for your continued support.

AWARDS Selected by William Cheung FRPS Judging images of disparate subjects is always challenging and that is even more the case when pictures are of such a generally high standard, creatively and technically. However, the variety and quality of the work made judging a real pleasure and I hope the exhibition will look good. Finally, just to say thanks to Moira and the team for the kind hospitality during the day. It made a lovely day even more satisfying.
Gold Award (Prints) Corridor by Sandy Cleland FRPS Judge’s Comment: There are so many great elements in this image and I loved it from the moment I first saw it. It is a brilliantly observed and composed shot with superb use of colour, light and contrast.

GOLD Award (PDIs), Southwold by Suffolk by David Turner LRPS Judge’s Comment: The winning DPI shows what can be done with simple components when skilfully put together. The use of a long exposure works well too giving those creamy smooth tones that the fence stands out so boldly against.
Silver Medal (Prints) Yellow Baboons At Dawn by Martin Heathcote LRPS Judge’s Comment: The light in this shot is sublime, absolutely stunning, and certainly makes this awesome composition even more appealing. I will be honest and say it ran my selected winning image very close indeed.

Silver Medal (PDIs) Untitled by Steve Geer ARPS Judge’s comment: I love this sharply observed shot. The components work so well together – the glove on the bottle, the bottle being poured into the cup and the cup itself in the ideal spot filling that gap between the buildings. Awesome.
Bronze Medal (PDIs) Rush Hour, Grand Central by Margaret Rainey FRPS Judge’s comment: Rush Hour, Grand Central by Margaret Rainey FRPS I must have seen this image six times during the judging session and each time my liking for it grew and grew. I was drawn to it. It is a compelling, intriguing image and deserves its award.

Bronze Medal (Prints) Victorian Lad by Mel Frewin LRPS Judge’s comment: Victorian Lad by Melvyn Frewin LRPS Re-enactment photography is a very popular subject nowadays and I think the author has done a really, very good job with this. The framing, use of lines and the subject’s pose are first rate.
Highly Commended (PDIs) Autumn Colour by Mike Bromley Judge’s comment: A painterly image with gorgeous colour and shapes, with the eye being skilfully led down to that water droplet. Doing this sort of shot well is not as easy as many people think and here the photographer has done a brilliant job.

Commended (Prints) American Flamingo by Cliff Spooner LRPS Judge’s comment: The technical quality of the capture and the print of this image is outstanding. The shape of the bird’s neck which stands out so well against the background makes this an outstanding composition.

Highly Commended (Prints) Nosferatu by Sandy Cleland FRPS Judge’s comment: If photographers are going to use editing software to make the most of their images, it needs to be of this sort of standard. Of course, you need the raw ingredients to start with and expressions and the wideangle composition work well together.
Commended (PDIs) Misty Morning In Dorset by Marion Sidebottom ARPS Judge’s comment: What a wonderfully atmospheric landscape. The cool blue mode suits this misty scene so well and that reflection is sublime.

Meet at Millennium Square, Harbourside, BS1 5SZ. There are some benches next to the giant silver globe. You will need £1 for a ferry ride across the harbour. Bristol’s Harbouside is a treasure trove of photographic opportunities. Boats (of course!), but also colourful houses rising high up the cliffs, railway 54
