Editorial I seem to have spent much of the last month planning photography trips, rather than getting out with a camera. I have not been alone - this month's newsletter includes details of new field trips in Cornwall, Pembrokeshire and the Lake District. Others are in the pipeline, so keep an eye on the group's Events page.

This month's Favourite Places are the Faroe Islands, described by our Treasurer, Richard Ellis, and the gentler landscape of the South Downs, brought to us by Graham Zimmerman. Thanks also to Steve Cheetham and Tim Jennings for providing images this month. Please keep the submissions coming.

It was good to see landscape photography featured in the August RPS Journal. If you have not already seen them, articles on long-exposure landscapes by Susan Brown FRPS and taking photographs 'whatever the weather' by Tony Worobiec FRPS are well worth a read.

I am now looking forward to a trip the Outer Hebrides. Wherever you are going, or if you are just staying at home, have a great summer.

NEWS ROUND UP On Landscape at the Joe Cornish Gallery There was a good turnout for the launch of the On Landscape Room at the Joe Cornish Gallery on July 16th Situated on the top floor of the Northallerton gallery, the room offers a dedicated space for photographers who have featured in the online magazine.

The work of five photographers is currently being shown - Colin Bell, Nigel Morton, Paul Mitchell, Peter Hyde and Stephen Barnett. The aim is to run for three or four months before handing over to another set of photographers. See here for more about the launch and examples of the work being shown.

Trig Pillars at 80 This year is the 80th anniversary of the trig pillar, a landmark known to walkers and those landscape photographers who choose to work from altitude. That said, apparently, there are some at low altitude, most in the Fens.

Originally the basis Ordnance Survey's retriangulation of Great Britain, thousands were built between 1936 and 1962. Now superseded by a network of satellite navigation receivers, those that remain are an integral part of the British landscape.

Scottish Nature Photographer of the Year 2016 The competition to find the Scottish Nature Photographer of the Year and Student and Junior title winners for 2016 will open on 10th September 2016.

MY FAVOURITE PLACE The Faroe Islands

by Richard Ellis LRPS I have always been attracted to visiting islands. There is something about their independence and can-do spirit that I find really attractive. The latest one I visited has a really challenging climate.

It rains or snows on 260 days a year, is one of the cloudiest locations on earth; reportedly, it is overcast on 300 days a year, has a huge intraday climatic variation and yet it is a photographer’s dream. I refer to the Faroe Islands.

This rugged archipelago located halfway between Norway and Iceland has its closet neighbour as North-Western Scotland. It is in some of the roughest parts of the Atlantic and the currents around its coast are some of the strongest in the world. The temperature variation is small with an average of 3° C in winter and 11° C in summer.

Given that description, why go? Quite simply the scenery is magnificent - towering cliffs, dramatic coastline, a rugged interior and the infrastructure makes getting around relatively easy.

The islands have been shaped by glacial activity giving rise to sharp slopes, pyramidal mounts and sharp ridges. The tallest cliffs as re found in the north and the islands slope gentle southwards. This means the landscape in the south is more gentle though nowhere in the islands has Caribbean like beaches!

I hope these images inspire you to explore these rugged islands.

MY FAVOURITE PLACE The South Downs

by Graham Zimmerman My favourite place is a stretch across the South Downs in West Sussex near where I live - between Clayton village and Ditchling Beacon.

I cannot really explain why, but the dewpond (below) in particular is a magical spot. I never walk past without stopping and photographing it. I have a collection of pictures of this one spot in all weathers and in all seasons. It is wonderful to be there, especially in lousy weather, and completely alone.

The images to the left are of views within a few hundred meters of the dewpond. I take a walk along this path regularly and am lucky to have this beautiful part of the country on my doorstep.

Exhibitions Environmental Photographer of the Year 60 winning and short-listed images, on show at the Royal Geographical Society in London until 19th August.

Ellie Davies: Into the Woods Images created in the forests of the UK, exploring the complex interrelationships between the landscape and the individual. At the Crane Kalman Gallery in London from 21st July to 20th August.

Henri Cartier-Bresson: PARIS Features images captured between 1929 and 1985, providing an extraordinary insight into the streets of the city and the lives of its people. Showing at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Art, Norwich until 29th August.

Captured at Kew An exhibition of photographs taken at Kew Gardens, from past and current International Garden Photographer of the Year competitions. On show at Kew Gardens until 4th September.

Echoes of the Great War: Photographs by Peter Cattrell Peter Cattrell's black and white images of the Somme today at Museums Sheffield until 4th September.

Travel Photographer of the Year The latest winning images from the Travel Photographer of the Year awards will first be shown at a new venue this year as the exhibition moves to the University of Greenwich's award-winning Stockwell Building from 22nd July to 4th September.

Fox Talbot: Dawn of the Photograph An exhibition exploring the life and career of Henry Fox Talbot, 'the father of photography'. Showing at the Science Museum in London until 11th September.

Noble Prospects: Capability Brown and the Yorkshire Landscape A celebration of the work of designer Lancelot Capability Brown in Yorkshire, with an exhibition of paintings, drawings and manuscripts. In addition, a new film by Simon Warner that depicts a group of Capability Brown’s Yorkshire landscapes as they are today. On show at the Mercer Gallery, Harrogate from 25th June to 11th September.

Painting With Light: Art and Photography from the Pre-Raphaelites to the Modern Age A major exhibition exploring the relationship between early photography and British Art. Showing at Tate Britain until 25th September.

The Great North Art Show Features 300 artworks by 50 of the UK’s finest contemporary painters, sculptors, printmakers and photographers, all displayed in the fabulous setting of Ripon Cathedral. From 3rd to 25th September.

Joe Cornish Gallery, Northallerton The On Landscape Room is currently showing work

by Colin Bell, Nigel Morton, Paul Mitchell, Peter Hyde and Stephen Barnett. Other photographers showing include Lizzie Shepherd, Anni Vassallo, Mike Caine, Robin Sinton and, of course, Joe Cornish.

Conferences, Fairs and Festivals A Meeting of Minds 2016 18th - 20th November, Rheged Centre, Cumbria Organised by online magazine On Landscape, this year's speakers include John Blakemore, Charles Cramer, Mark Littlejohn, Simon Norfolk and more.

Photomonth A celebration of of photography in galleries across East London, from 1st October to 30th November.

Digital Splash Equipment, advice and guest speakers at the Liverpool Echo Arena on the weekend of 15th & 16th October.

EVENTS Cornwall - Botallack to Kenidjack (and back again) - Easier option Saturday 17th September

Kenidjack Valley The first of two successive Saturdays, this with an easier walking option. Sights to see will include cave mine workings, The Crowns, Botallack Mine and Arsenic Works, Wheal Owles, dramatic sea cliffs, Kenidjack Head, views over Cape Cornwall, mine workings at Kenidjack Valley and a view of The Scilly Isles of clear. Liverpool and Crosby Field Trip Saturday 15th October

Spend the morning photographing the blend of architectural styles in and around the city centre.

Then, weather permitting, relocate to visit Anthony Gormley's renowned Another Place, an installation of 100 life-sized statues at Crosby Beach.

Capture the Lake District in Autumnal colours Saturday 22nd October Elterwater The North West Region is again running its successful autumn trip to the magnificent Langdale valley in the Lake District; a trip that will be of interest to many members of the Landscape Group.

Photographing landscape; whatever the weather with Tony Worobiec Saturday 3rd September

Pembrokeshire Weekend 29th/30th October

Bath HQ The purpose of this course, organised by RPS HQ, is to alert you to the potential of photographing landscape, irrespective of the weather conditions. For full details see here.

Haverfordwest Saturday morning will start at Marloes Sands. After lunch, we will move on to Broad Haven or, if the group prefers, Wooltack Point with views to Skomer and Skokholm. On Sunday we will go to Solva and Mathry. See here for more details.

Walk through Aira Beck on to Gowbarrow and then the top of Yew Crag; visit Aira Force with various falls, rocks and rapids. After lunch move on to the Bowder Stone car park in Borrowdale to visit either Grange Crags, with sunset opportunities towards Derwentwater and Skiddaw, or King's How. See here for details.
