It’s their gaze, the way they focus on the world that surrounds them.

All three of them are mindful photographers. They use contemplative photography to get to the essence of their subject.

What do great photographers like Robert Adams, Cartier Bresson and Saul Leiter have in common?

In this workshop you will make an acquaintance with contemplative photography in both theory as well as in practice.

In the afternoon we will find out in what way mindful photography can contribute to your photography. How you can really connect with your subject.

As the photographers couple, Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb, both approach their subject in a mindful, focussed way, this led to striking street photography for Alex and to touching poetic images by Rebecca.

Issue 1 2023 Upcoming workshops 6

The results of your experience will be discussed at the end of the workshop. So, let’s find out how contemplative photography can improve your photography and can make your photography more satisfying.

May, 2023

On 14 May 2023 we successfully held a Photo walk in Rotterdam, expertly guided by Jeroen Dorrestein LRPS.

We were joined by members of the ViewFinders Photography club from Brussels In total we were 20 Photographers.

The route took us through the Cube Houses, along the old harbour and Maritime Museum. We had lunch in a café close by the Erasmusbrug, after lunch we walked underneath the bridge. We passed by the Veerhaven and through the park towards the Depot Boijmans van Beuningen.

We walked along the Westersingel, ending the walk near Rotterdam Central Station. A group of us had some drinks in a cafe close by. It was a very relaxing walk, providing plenty of opportunities to take photos, and explore the city.

Here is a selection of some of the images taken during the walk.

International Photo Festival Pelt Belgium.

4 June to 1 October 2023.

The Photo Festival is supported by the RPS Benelux Chapter

Issue 1 2023 13

The Opening on 4 June was a tremendous success. The award winners in Gold, Silver, Bronze, Honourable Mentions in Professional and Amateur categories were announced, and the opening was well attended. The organisers of the photo festival had live music playing and everyone was welcomed into the large theatre at CC Palethe, in the Zinnezaal.

The awards were all presented and those in attendance could go up on stage to receive a large print of their photo and a certificate. Afterwards some drinks were available, and people could mingle and talk and listen to more music being played.

Martin Parr HonFRPS has photos on the walls inside the Foyer of CC Palethe for you to admire. He will be giving a Lecture on his photography on Saturday 23rd September, pre- booking tickets is available through the site.

Over 1,000 photos can be seen on the streets of Pelt on an easily accessible route of nearly 3km. You’ll see photos in the Church, on walls, on special posts, in the Vakschool (Old TIO site) and of course, inside CC Palethe.

To the Blue Pole (Tot de Blauwe Paal)

Issue 1 2023 42

To the Blue Pole (Tot de Blauwe Paal).

This is the title of a new photobook and exhibition of Armando Jongejan FRPS. Museum of Egmond, Zuiderstraat 7, Egmond aan Zee.

From 3 September until 5 November 2023. Opens daily 14.00 - 17.00.

Issue 1 2023 To the Blue Pole 43
To the Blue Pole (Tot de Blauwe Paal), the border mark between the village of Egmond aan Zee and the rest of the world.

Villagers of Egmond (Egmondse dorpsportretten) was published in 1996 and was Armando's first photo book (sold out).

During that period, he wanted to record the rapid changes in his living environment. He wrote about this: “What is still self-evident now may definitely belong to the past in the (near) future.”

Time does not stand still. A lot has changed since 1996. People have died. The greengrocer has disappeared from the streets. Where the playground once was, there is now a hotel. The fish cart on Pompplein is no longer there, just like the bakery in the Julianastraat and the dairy shop in the Noorderstraat

Michiel and Linda

More than 25 years later, Armando thought the time was right to make another photo report about his living environment. In 2022 and 2023 he captured several moments of daily life in Egmond aan Zee and collected them in this book and exhibition, which provide a sense of this time frame He photographed people at sea, on the beach, in the dunes and in the village.

Armando Jongejan FRPS (1960, Egmond aan Zee - The Netherlands) studied photography at the University of Applied Photography in Apeldoorn and works as a freelance photographer. His work is characterised by a thematic approach. As a documentary photographer, he likes to make contact with people in their own environment being curious as to how they live and work. In addition to the photos, this also yields nice conversations.

Summer Challenge 2023

“At One with Nature”

Issue 1 2023 51

This year’s Summer Challenge hopes to encourage you, the photographer, to look at nature –landscapes, in any form, shape, or size.

Summer Challenge Issue 1 2023 52

But with no people permitted

Use any technique which inspires you. That could be ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) with multiple exposures – something we learnt in our workshop in 2019 with Martin Addison FRPS, in Zierikzee. Or go abstract, minimalistic/intimate landscapes, panoramas, macro, etc. You can use a slow shutter speed to create movement. Whatever tickles your fancy.

“At One with Nature”. Take the summertime to create your photos, your best three may be submitted. As last year, we ourselves will vote (no votes for your images) to select the best photos! Who knows, it could be the start of a panel!

All of the photos will be added to the Summer Challenge 2023, “At One with Nature” album. With special mention of the winning photos!

Images may be new – preferably - or from your archive, just in case you want to include wintery cold scenes, or images from places travelled to, far away or long ago.

Let us feel your emotions.
