Welcome to
AV World
Welcome to the Autumn issue of AV World Welcome to the Autumn issue of AV World! The new season has well and truly started, with competitions and events already underway. Yesterday I was at DAVE, standing for Devon AV Enthusiasts. This event is held three times a year as an extension to our regular EPG AV Group meetings, which are now held on Zoom. With so much AV activity now held on-line, its always good to attend a live event. Sadly, these are becoming fewer and fewer, and when the Mid-Thames AV Group have their final meeting next March there Ian Bateman will only be a few “pure” AV Groups left. The Essex FRPS MPAGB AV-EFIAP AV Group still meet monthly, as do the East APAGB Midlands Group, with the Northern AV Group having occasional meetings in Snodʼs Edge. The North West AV day on 6th October is a new initiative by Adrian Battersby and Mike Pill, so if you can make it to the Irlam Station Café on that date, please support it! More details are in this issue. Awards and Distinctions There has been a committee working on the refresh of the RPS Distinctions, which as we know have been paused across all categories while the review takes place. Anthony Luvera, the Director of Education, is holding a meeting in the first week of October to outline the new procedure. The RPS website has already been updated with details of how it will work ‒ see https://rps.org/qualifications/distinctions At first glance it appears that AV will not have the stand-alone distinction that we lobbied for, but will sit within a new section called ʻMoving Image and expanded Photographic Practiceʼ. More will be known as the information is released.
The PAGB held their annual Awards for Photographic Merit in AV last week. All of the applications were shown over Zoom, and we had an audience of 82 log-ins. Many congratulations to the successful applicants, with a big shout out to Mike Pill, who joins the select band of people with a Masters Award in AV! Mike has been featured in the current issue if PAGB e-News (No 414), which can be read by clicking the image below.

United Photographic Portfolios
The magic of creating audio visual sequences The UPP (United Photographic postfolios) is an organisation where the club comes to you, however there are still opportunities to meet socially and make friends. Originally Monthly Folios were circulated by post ‒ hence the name but now there are many different circles. A good number are circulated by zoom, drop box and other digital means. The Large Print Circle I am a member of uses delivery firms for “The Box” or ʻenvopakʼ to circulate around the group members usually 10 to 12 members. My great love is for Audio Visual productions and there is just one AV Circle of which I am secretary. We currently have 6 members and would welcome new members. As AV takes a lot more time than producing one monthly print or PDI we circulate 4 Folios a year with plenty of time to watch, listen and comment on other members efforts as well as making your own productive efforts. So if you love making photos and showing more of them to an appreciative audience then join this group. You can be, researcher, story teller, sound engineer and producer with very satisfying results.

If you have something to say, tell the story in pictures with music, and/or prose, song, poetry or voice over. It is very satisfying and a different way of stimulating photographic interest. For more information please go to www.uppofgb.com or email me direct at val.burdis@yahoo.co.uk Here are 2 youtube links with AVs from members to watch. We try to have AVs lasting about 6 mins. The first is mine and basically a travelog with a story and the second is an example of photo harmony (Pictures and music tell the story without words)

AV Makers of South Africa
AV Makers South Africa There hasn't been much news from AV Makers South Africa over the past eighteen months. The good news is that a new committee, with Jeff Morris back in the Chair, is trying to activate members to start producing new work. The first event to which everyone will be invited is a Zoom exhibition of our membersʼ work. There will be some beginner AVs as well as some by established workers. The event will be on 6th December. We will share the link later, and we look forward to welcoming an international audience. If interest is strong, we may launch another successful theme competition next year. At home, we have a series of training sessions lined up. These will involve coaching of our new members.

Using ng Music in an Audio Visual Music in an
Audio Visual One of the most often asked questions which AV lecturers are asked is ʻHow can we use music in our AV without falling foul of the law?ʼ There are basically four ways: Write the Music Yourself This is probably not an option for most people but perhaps you could get a friend to write it for you. Use Royalty Free Music There are many websites which offer royalty free music, which means that the copyright owner has waived their rights to royalties by licensing the use of the music with its purchase price. Use Creative Commons Music This is a rapidly expanding area of music licensing, where an artist freely publishes music for public use in the hope that their work will eventually become better known.

Use commercially available music under licence In the UK, there is a long-established method for obtaining permission to use copyrighted music in amateur productions, covering both AV and video. Two music industry bodies, the Mechanical Copyright Performance Society (the MCPS), and the British Phonographic Industry (the BPI), issue licences allowing the use of music from legitimately purchased sources to be used in amateur (ie specifically not professional) productions. The MCPS licence protects the rights of the composer, and the BPI licence protects the rights of the publisher. To Credit or not to Credit? You may have noticed the variation or absence of music credits at the end of AV sequences ‒ it all depends on the source of the music used. A peculiarity of the IAC licences (specifically the BPI licence) is that the name of the performing artist must not be credited in the AV sequence, though the name of the piece of music can be (though this is not mandatory). If you choose to use ʻRoyalty-Freeʼ or Creative Commons music however, details of the source of the music are usually a requirement of the licence. Whatever you use, itʼs essential to read the licence agreement to ensure that you are complying with its requirements. opportunity to combine projected photographs with sound and narration and it is an interesting way of presenting your work and ideas. We can offer you advice, encourage and support members through education, competitions and distinctions, as well as showing you how to make an AV.
Audio Visual, or AV as it is known is a fantastic way of showcasing stunning photographic images linked to a sound track ‒ music, song, poetry, words, sounds, or a combination of these. A particular feature of an AV production is the third image, that wonderful moment when one image dissolves into the next.

TogDays
Togdays was created by me, Phil Jones, a retired software developer, keen amateur photographer, and member of Bebington Photographic Society. I was always looking around to find events and places to go to in order to get new pictures. I would trawl through lists of sports events, looking for something local to me, and note down the dates in a spreadsheet. Every time I saw a Workshop or other event advertised I'd add it to my list. After a while I wondered why there wasn't a central database of all of these. I searched, and couldn't find one - so thought I'd create one myself. So here it is - a central database of places, Events and Presenters that could be of interest to Photographers ('Togs'). The idea is that this database will contain details of Workshops, Photo Walks, Wildlife Hides, Organised Shoots, Sports Events, Historical Reenactments or Battles, and anything else that could be of interest. It has recently been updated to hold details of presenters and tutors who can provide talks or workshops to individuals or clubs. Competition Judges have also been added and have their own section. In time it may also contain Photographic Exhibitions and Competitions. For Photographers, the site will provide a searchable system so that you can filter the events you are interested in, in the areas you want. Every Event will be categorised, and also have a location. Click the graphic at the top for more information. AV World
