Notes from your RO Well here we are, 2018 almost gone, but hopefully everyone has enjoyed at least some of our ‘changeable’ weather and been able to get out for some great photography.

This year is going well and at the second of our Advisory Days at Wakefield, more potential Distinction candidates received much good, clear and supportive guidance from our Advisors.

Speaking of Advisors, I must again personally thank Robert Helliwell ARPS and Nigel Plant ARPS for stepping in to give Panel advice.

With such low numbers of attendees the society would question the viability of the event going ahead. As a region we’re reluctant to cancel, so thanks go to everyone for pulling together to make these happen. We have at least one more Advisory Day and don’t forget our Celebration of Distinctions Day, which will cover all distinction levels. See page 4 for dates and the RPS website for details.

This newsletter is the first in a new format for our RPS Yorkshire Region – hopefully you will like the clean aesthetics and articles of interest. We are always looking for new material, be it an article or personal photographic journey you want to share, not forgetting that we love to publish details and reports of new and exciting exhibitions you’re involved with, events or something new happening in your part of the county.

..more from your RO… We held our first Café Session/Self-Help group at The Tetley in Leeds in July; it was a very busy time and it’s always good to see friends old and new.

Do look out for further meetings at another new venue we are trying this year – The Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster on Friday 12th October, we will be in the café near the entrance. If you haven’t visited the wildlife park, they have acquired the rescued brown bears from Japan. I visited earlier in the year and as the weather was so hot none of the larger animals wanted to be out, so looking forward to going when the climate is a little cooler maybe I might see the bears too.

You have may noticed my RPS email address has changed, you can now contact me at – yorkshirechair@rps.org if you have my personal email feel free to contact me on either. I have taken an RPS email for two purposes, being on the different committees there was an abundance of emails so needed to make sure I was keeping track on these amongst my personal ones. Also in that I will be stepping down shortly and the new RO [when we find one] and members should have consistency with correspondence.

Documentary SIG sub-group The RPS Documentary Group is planning to start a new regionally focused sub group based in York and led

by Graham Evans.

The sub-group will be aligned with the strategic aims of the RPS with a focus on education, high standards of photography and a critical appreciation of documentary photography.

The creation of this sub-group is part of the Documentary Group's increased focus on regional activity and addresses much of the feedback we received during the recent membership survey.

The sub-group will be run by members who generously volunteer their time. So, if you’d like to be involved in any capacity, please email Graham and let him know how you’d like to participate or to suggest the kind of events you’d like to see in your region.

The initial meeting was being held over the summer, with dates and location to be confirmed following sufficient interest.

The group’s initial plans include showing and discussing current projects and, with enough interest, a joint project or book with brief outings and sharing of material.

Of course, the events and themes would be directed by the group and the people available to organise anything more ambitious, and already there are some thoughts on speakers, workshops, etc.

Wednesday 7th November 2018. 1:30 pm to 4:30pm Undercliffe Cemetery, Bradford, a Grade II listed site on 26 acres with over 20,000 graves and monuments, including over 200 military graves from a wide variety of conflicts, including WW1 service personnel, along with many others of a highly ornate style including an Egyptian monument.

Many of the wealthy, influential Bradford families bought plots in the Cemetery during the 19th Century. The Undercliffe Cemetery Charity itself will organise a guided tour, along a system of well-established hard and grassed paths with most areas being accessible to wheelchair users.

Information on the design principles behind the layout of the site, a look at the 6 monuments listed by English Heritage, a visit to some of the most prominent graves and to some special areas such as the Quaker burial area and the Historic Core. Finishing at the Smith Monument, which has one of the most panoramic and breathtaking views across the city of Bradford and out along the Aire Valley.

We ask that all photographers be respectful during any burial or memorial services.

These places are limited and MUST be booked in advance.

SHEFFIELD PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY PERSPECTIVES 14 EXHIBITION SHEFFIELD WINTER GARDEN: 19th NOVEMBER to 2nd DECEMBER 2018 Sheffield Photographic Society will be holding its 14th Annual Perspectives Exhibition at the Winter Garden, Sheffield from 12noon on Monday 19th November to 2pm on Sunday 2nd December 2018.The Exhibition is the first of the Society’s season and will be opened

by Sheffield Lord Mayor, Councillor Magid Magid. The Winter Garden is open from 8am to 8pm each day (except Sunday’s 8am to 6pm) for visitors to view this FREE Exhibition.

Up to 44 Sheffield PS members have chosen a selection of prints, covering a wide range of contemporary photographic styles using colour and monochrome images. Historic images of Sheffield will also be displayed. Members of Sheffield PS will be on hand around lunchtime each day (2 hours weekdays, 4 hours weekends) to assist visitors’ appreciation of the images, or simply to chat about photography.

SPS members will be also be able to provide detailed information on all aspects of Sheffield PS, which, with around 100 members is one of the largest photographic societies in the UK, as well as being one of the oldest in the World, being founded in 1864.

Stanley Hodgkiss - a much missed member, supporter and volunteer.

It was with much sadness that we received and shared the news of the passing of Stanley Hodgkiss who’s funeral took place in May 2018.

Stanley had been the Treasurer for the Yorkshire Region from 2007 to 2012.

Remembered as a gentleman in all respects and a well respected and committed volunteer who gave much of his time to support the Region and its members.

Many will remember Stan if they attended Regional events, or knew him through Harrogate Photographic Society, where he continued to attend as long as he could.
