HURRICANE PREPARATIONS

• Decide on an evacuation plan well in advance as a precautionary measure.

• Inform RPIA or a neighbor, if you intend to evacuate.

• Plan to care for yourself and family without outside assistance for a minimum of seven days.

• Stock non-perishable food and drink. Plan 1 gallon of drinking water per person per day.

• Stock important prescription medications. A four week supply in their original bottles.

• Collect all vital documents and place in a waterproof bag and keep close at hand.

• Turn refrigerator/freezer to coldest setting - freeze plastic jugs/bottles of water.

• Fuel up vehicles, propane tanks and generators.

• Bring outdoor furnishings indoors or secure properly.

• Do not completely drain your pool, lower water level 6 to 12 inches and add chlorine to prevent contamination. Turn off electricity to equipment and cover exposed pool pumps.

• Protect your windows with shutters or plywood.

• If you have double-entry doors, protect them as you would a window with shutters or plywood, or nail 2 x 4’s across them from the inside on storm day to prevent them from blowing in.

• Fill bathtubs so you can use the water for washing and flushing.

• Decide on a safe room - an interior bathroom or walk-in closet with no windows.

• If the power goes out, turn off the stove and all appliances to avoid a fi re hazard when the power comes back on.

• Know where to shut off power and water.

• During a storm, stay away from windows, skylights, and glass doors.

■ Insect repellent and sunscreen

■ Soap and detergent

■ Books, magazines, toys, and games

■ Camera

■ Toiletries, pre-moistened towelettes, and plastic trash bags

■ Instant tire sealer

■ Whistle and/or distress flag
