Physical Education
At RHS, Key Stage 3 students experience a wide variety of activities within their physical education and games lessons.
Key topics and projects
Physical education lessons are timetabled as two hours per fortnight and taught by subject specialists. Activities include invasion games, gymnastics, football, dance, badminton, orienteering, tennis, basketball, volleyball and health-related fitness. In addition to their PE lessons the girls have dedicated games afternoons with major sports taking priority such as hockey, netball, athletics, cricket and cross-country. Our aim is to encourage and assist the girls to progress and develop their fundamental skills which is achieved through critical thinking and self/peer analysis in various challenging environments.
RHS Learner Qualities
Our underlying philosophy in RHS physical education is to develop the girls’ knowledge and understanding of how best to adopt a healthy, active lifestyle. We aim to develop physically literate girls who have the confidence, motivation, physical competence, and knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activity for life. As a result, of Covid-19 we have encouraged and valued the opportunity to provide a successful and popular ‘sport for all’ programme which has held inclusion at its core. The programme was most successful for supporting girls social and mental well-being. We have also included more holistic activities at RHS school, for example, fun runs, yoga, kickboxing, zumba, nature walks and dance with the emphasis being placed on the girls’ overall wellbeing in these challenging times.
Co-curricular
Our sport performers also have the opportunity to represent the school in a comprehensive fixtures programme that runs on Saturdays, as well as midweek fixtures. The sport performers can develop their skills both in lessons and in the diverse and extensive extra-curricular programme that runs under the RHS ACTIVE banner. The sport scholars and elite performers also have the opportunity to continue to build upon their knowledge of how to train and how to achieve their potential in their desired sport. We actively support all of the girls’ interests and hobbies outside of the school environment. Additionally, we also have strong links with a number of clubs across South-West region which provides excellent pathways for our elite performers.
