Outdoor Education is at the heart of life at Royal High School, offering pupils challenge, adventure, and personal growth. We run Bronze, Silver, and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programmes entirely in-house, led by our experienced Head of DofE with over 25 years of expertise. Pupils also have the opportunity to take part in the prestigious Ten Tors challenge, testing resilience and teamwork in real-world conditions. The DofE embodies our school values of kindness, bravery, and lifelong learning — encouraging pupils to support others, step outside their comfort zone, and develop skills that last a lifetime.
Over the last year 123 of our students have started a level of DofE – that is 44% of the eligible students, compared to about 30% of the national average. Over the past three years, an incredible 71% of those students who enrolled with DofE completed one or more awards and last year 11 of our Sixth Form students completed their Gold Award while still at school – a huge achievement, requiring significant determination over a prolonged period of time.

One of the most challenging and rewarding opportunities we offer is participation in the Ten Tors Challenge, a nationally recognised expedition that takes place each spring on Dartmoor. Teams of six students from across the South West take on this demanding event, navigating some of the country’s toughest terrain while remaining entirely self-sufficient. Depending on age, teams cover either 35 miles (Year 10) or 45 miles (Year 12), visiting ten remote checkpoints — many located on the iconic tors that define the landscape — and camping overnight on the Moor. Starting together at 7.00am on Saturday, teams must complete the challenge by Sunday afternoon, testing both physical endurance and mental resilience.
Students who complete Ten Tors frequently describe it as “the hardest and best thing I have ever done”. Beyond the achievement itself, the challenge develops invaluable life skills: confidence, resilience, leadership and teamwork, as well as the ability to manage risk, solve problems and support one another in demanding situations without direct adult intervention. It is an unforgettable experience that pushes students beyond their comfort zones and leaves a lasting impact long after the challenge is complete.

School trips are a vital part of a student’s development, offering opportunities to build confidence, independence, and lifelong memories beyond the classroom. We run annual year-group residentials in the UK for Years 7, 8, and 12 — from outdoor adventures at Kilve Court and Ultimate Adventure in North Devon, to leadership and bonding experiences in Dorset.
Beyond this, pupils enjoy enrichment trips to destinations such as Iceland, New York, the Battlefields, Barcelona, Skiing in Canada and even humanitarian work in Kenya. A highlight of the year is our annual Activities Week, when students step off timetable and immerse themselves in a wide variety
of experiences — from surfing and camping in the south of France or exploring the ruins of Pompeii, to paddleboarding on the River Avon, exploring art museums in Bath, or enjoying the thrills of Thorpe Park. With something for everyone, these trips broaden horizons, foster resilience and teamwork, and create lasting memories that enrich every student’s journey.
Adding to these experiences, we are proud to offer a unique annual exchange programme with St Catherine’s School in Sydney. Year 9 students first host Australian pupils for four weeks here in Bath, before travelling to Australia themselves to attend school and live alongside their hosts. This enriching and truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity builds global friendships, cultural awareness, and confidence in a way few other experiences can.

The World Challenge Morocco expedition is a carefully structured co-curricular experience that offers students an exceptional opportunity for adventure, cultural immersion and personal growth. Year 7 and planned for the summer of Year 9, the expedition benefits from a long leadin period that allows students to prepare thoroughly, fundraise gradually and develop independence at a manageable pace. This extended time frame supports thoughtful financial planning for families while enabling students to take increasing responsibility for budgeting, organisation and teamwork through student-led fundraising activities.

During the expedition, students experience Morocco in depth, exploring vibrant cities and traditional souks, experiencing local cuisine and customs, and trekking through the striking landscapes of the Atlas Mountains. Alongside these physical and cultural challenges, students engage meaningfully with local communities, gaining insight into different ways of life and developing a broader global perspective. Working together in unfamiliar environments, students strengthen their resilience, adaptability and leadership skills, building confidence through real-world problem solving beyond the classroom. Planned well in advance, the expedition reflects the school’s commitment to providing high-quality, sustainable opportunities that support long-term student development, offering students a memorable, enriching experience that shapes character and supports future success.
