Royal & Derngate is one of the few regional theatres that produces its own original work, alongside hosting an exciting range of visiting productions. We take pride in creating ambitious theatre that inspires thought, sparks conversation, and delights audiences. A Royal & Derngate, Northampton, Landmark Theatres and Oxford Playhouse co-production, in association with Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse
“It’s not breaking a code that matters, it’s where you go from there” Mastermind code breaker. Maverick. Arguably one of the most important and inquisitive minds of the twentieth century. Alan Turing is famed for cracking the Enigma code at Bletchley Park, effectively securing victory for the Allied forces in WWII.
From triumph to tragedy, get to know a human being who loved, lost and never stopped asking questions in a quest for truth and understanding in this new production of Hugh Whitemore’s Breaking the Code
For the first time, taking into consideration his recent Royal pardon and the development of Turing’s law, the original play will feature a new epilogue by Neil Bartlett that speaks to Turing’s lasting legacy on modern Britain. Director Jesse Jones

A FESTIVE TREAT FOR AGES 3+
Aidan's lost. His best mate’s starting uni, his mum can’t get out of bed, and his new side hustle has questionable legality. Meanwhile, he’s stacking shelves at the supermarket wondering if this is all he’s cut out for. He’s got hobbieshanging out at the skate park and doom scrolling his days away.
As he’s lapping up the algorithm ‘Hugo Bang’ appears with the promise to help Aidan become the alpha he was born to be.
Will Hugo Bang help Aidan get his life back on track, or will he lead Aidan to a darker, more dangerous place?
Directed by Jesse Jones, this brand-new play by local playwright Samson Hawkins (author of Stratford East's critically acclaimed Village Idiot) crackles with dry humour and a modern-day wit.
Transforming the Derngate auditorium into a skatepark, this Made In Northampton production dives headfirst into the influence of online culture, the pull of toxic masculinity, and the search for identity in the digital age.

Matthew Bourne’s award-winning The Midnight Bell comes to Northampton for the first time in 2025.
In 1930s London ordinary people emerge from cheap boarding houses nightly to pour out their passions, hopes and dreams in the pubs and fog-bound streets of Soho and Fitzrovia. Step inside The Midnight Bell, a tavern where one particular lonely-hearts club gather to play out their lovelorn affairs of the heart; bitter comedies of longing, frustration, betrayal and redemption.
Inspired by the great English novelist Patrick Hamilton (Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky, Hangover Square) who created some of the most authentic fiction of his era; stories borne out of years of social interactions with the working man and woman at his favourite location – the London Pub.
Hailed by The Observer as ‘the undisputed king of dance theatre’, master storyteller Bourne has produced some of the most successful dance theatre productions of the last 30 years including Swan Lake, Cinderella, The Red Shoes and Edward Scissorhands.

How far would you go to fight for change? Unravel the world of 19th century Victorian England through the eyes of Mrs Jekyll and watch how the lines between past and present collide in this powerful adaptation by Evan Placey of Louis Stevenson’s classic tale, directed by Tonia Daley Campbell and Gemma Boaden.
With the oppressive nature of patriarchal England looming over the recently widowed Mrs Jekyll she finds herself facing continued confrontation and challenge, torn between her polite societal desire to act against injustice and her growing rage to transform into something, or maybe someone, who might just be able to fight back. This story cleverly brings the past into the future and the present into the past, with this wonderful unique adaptation that leaves you questioning exactly how much has changed for women in the last 200 years.
Watch this thrilling, bloody and provoking play brought to life by The Actors Company in the very beautiful Victorian Royal Theatre.

When life gives Rhod lemons…
In his last show
The Book Of John, Rhod was dealing with some pretty pungent life citrus, and an idiot called John. Little did he know that things were about to turn even more sour…
But Rhod’s not bitter; he’s bouncing back and feeling remarkably zesty.
Hilariously dark, passionate and way too personal, this is classic Gilbert, squeezing every last drop out of life’s latest curveballs… with a little help from an old adversary.

Writing Doesn’t Have to Be Lonely was established in February 2018 as a monthly event for writers to hear their work at an early stage read by actors, led by Dan McGarry and Caroline Nash.
Whether it is something that has been written in the last couple of weeks, or a script that has been sitting in a drawer for a couple of years, we encourage emerging and established artists to bring their scripts along. These are then given out to actors and the work is performed to the audience.
Please email writingdhtbl@gmail.com to find out more about their organisation and attending.

Tickets can be sent electronically free of charge and may be printed at home or displayed on a smart phone upon entry. There is a £3 fee applicable to post your tickets to a UK address. We recommend that we do not post any tickets booked within 10 days of the performance, and
instead will hold them at the Box Office for collection and a £1 fee applies for this service.
A non-refundable transaction charge of £4 applies to all bookings of £20 and over, except for Members, Access Patrons and Group Bookers. This charge is only applicable per transaction and not per ticket. The transaction charge exists to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate.
As ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices may not necessarily benefit the theatre. By adding a transaction charge, we ensure that every penny goes directly to Royal & Derngate. We will continue to tell you about these charges when you book tickets with us.
Once purchased, tickets are non-refundable except where a show is cancelled or postponed. Ticket exchanges may be offered for the same production on payment of a small per ticket fee. For sold out shows we will accept returned tickets for re-sale up to 24 hours prior on the understanding that a gift voucher (less transaction fees) will be provided if the tickets are re-sold. Any tickets found to be sold via an unauthorised agent may be void without refund and the ticket holder refused entry.
When booking, customers now have the option to add refund protection to their tickets via a third-party provider, Booking Protect. This protects your ticket should you be unable to attend a show for reasons outside of your control such as illness. Please visit our website for full details on our conditions of sale.
Our Box Office and website will ask when you book if you wish to receive further information from us about Royal & Derngate’s events and activities. We will record your wishes and use them to inform what you receive from us in future. You can update these preferences at any time by accessing your account via our website or by calling Box Office. Full information on how we use your data can be found at www.royalandderngate.co.uk/privacy
