WELCOME

OUR MADE IN NORTHAMPTON 2018 SEASON In our newly redesigned brochure you’ll recognise our Made In Northampton productions – commissioned and created right here at Royal & Derngate – when you see the logo above. Following our Made In Northampton Christmas productions, we begin our new season in January by originating an epic staging of A Passage To India to mark the 75th anniversary of Indian independence before reimagining Agatha Christie’s classic thriller Love From A Stranger in February. In April we premiere a musical version of Oscar Wilde’s family favourite The Selfish Giant from one of Britain’s most successful songwriters, Guy Chambers, and then in May we welcome back our Fringe First and Stage Ensemble Award awardwinning production of Education, Education, Education. We are also collaborating on a breathtaking adaptation of Joe Simpson’s memoir Touching The Void, which will be a highlight of the Autumn season. These productions will go on to play across the British Isles, having received their world premieres here in Northampton. Also, several more original productions will follow them from May onwards, which will be announced shortly as part of our full Made In Northampton 2018 season launch.

WHAT’S O

A CO-PRODUCTION WITH CHILDREN’S TOURING PARTNERSHIP

By JESSICA SWALE Music by JOE STILGOE Based on the stories by RUDYARD KIPLING Directed by MAX WEBSTER

A vivid new adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s family classic, The Jungle Book is a wild and funny tale of family, belonging and identity. This production, specially created for the Royal stage this Christmas, is packed with memorable characters, new songs and brilliant storytelling. Mowgli the man cub battles for survival in the heartwarming coming-of-age story about a boy raised by wolves in the jungle. With the help of his animal friends, including Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear, Mowgli outwits the cruel and

powerful tiger, Shere Khan, and learns the law of the jungle. Adapted by the Olivier Award-winning Jessica Swale (Nell Gwynn), composed by internationally acclaimed songwriter Joe Stilgoe and directed by Max Webster (The Lorax, The Old Vic), The Jungle Book receives its premiere at Royal & Derngate before a major national tour. It promises to be the perfect festive entertainment for all ages. #JungleBook17

A CO-PRODUCTION WITH LITTLE ANGEL THEATRE

Written by JULIA DONALDSON and illustrated by LYDIA MONKS Adapted by SAMANTHA LANE and BARB JUNGR Music & Lyrics by BARB JUNGR Did you ever go to Silversands On a sunny summer’s day? Then perhaps you saw the mermaid Who sang in the deep blue bay... One day, the singing mermaid is tempted away from all of her sea creature friends and her peaceful home at Silversands to join a travelling circus. The audiences love to hear her sing, but the poor mermaid was tricked! Instead of the swimming pool she was promised, she is kept in a small tank by the wicked circus master Sam Sly, and she soon longs to return to the freedom of the sea.

Will she ever escape? And who will help her along the way? Through beautiful puppetry and performance, and with music by Barb Jungr (We’re Going On A Bear Hunt), Royal & Derngate collaborate once again with Little Angel Theatre (Moominsummer Madness, 2014), to bring Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks’ enormously popular story, The Singing Mermaid, to life. “OBSCENELY ADORABLE” TIME OUT ON SAMANTHA LANE’S ME #SingingMermaidShow

SELLADOOR PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS

From the producers of some of the leading UK shows comes this thrilling new production of the most iconic and powerful story in American literature. Set in the trying times of the Great Depression, Of Mice And Men is a powerful portrait of the American spirit and a heartbreaking testament to the bonds of friendship and what it means to be human. This landmark play by Nobel Prize-winning John Steinbeck is the story of George and Lennie, two migrant ranch workers who dream of owning their own ranch. Still painfully relevant to modern times, this is a moving story about trying to hold on to your dreams and friendships during difficult times.

“KARA LILY HAYWORTH IS A SUPERSTAR... YOU’LL LAUGH, CRY AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN. CILLA THE MUSICAL IS SIMPLY FLAWLESS” LIVERPOOL ECHO

Cilla - The Musical is a spectacular and heart-warming musical adaptation of the critically acclaimed ITV mini‑series about Cilla Black, by BAFTA award-winner Jeff Pope (Philomena, Little Boy Blue). The story follows the extraordinary life of the ordinary teenage girl from Liverpool, Priscilla White, and her rocky, yet incredible, rise to fame. The musical score is the ultimate soundtrack to the ’60s, including Cilla’s greatest hits Anyone Who Had A Heart, Alfie and Something Tells Me, The Beatles’ Twist And Shout, California Dreamin’ by The Mamas And The Papas, and many more. Following weeks of open auditions countrywide, Kara Lily Hayworth fought off thousands of hopefuls to be cast as Cilla in the first ever musical about the star’s life. Executive Producer and Cilla’s son, Robert Willis, said of Kara: “I knew she was the one my mum would have wanted!”. A CO-PRODUCTION WITH BRISTOL OLD VIC, ROYAL LYCEUM THEATRE EDINBURGH AND FUEL

Based on the book by

JOE SIMPSON Adapted by

DAVID GREIG Directed by

TOM MORRIS

What happens when you look death squarely in the face and how do you find the strength to crawl back towards life? Joe Simpson’s best-selling memoir, turned BAFTA‑winning film, charts his struggle for survival in the Andes in 1985. The heart of the story is Joe’s mental battle as he teeters on the brink of death and despair in a crevasse from which he can’t possibly climb to safety. Alongside this is the appalling dilemma of

Simon Yates, perched on an unstable snow-cliff, battered by freezing winds and desperate to rescue his injured climbing partner who hangs from a rope below him. Tom Morris (The Grinning Man, Swallows & Amazons) directs the first stage adaptation of this nail-biting adventure by award-winning writer and Artistic Director of The Lyceum, David Greig (The Events, The Suppliant Women). #TouchingTheVoid

THE DARKNESS OF ROBINS

FRI 26 JANUARY 8PM

Loosely based on the myth of Echo and Narcissus, this physical comedy show explores narcissism with a modern twist, using mobile phones, social media and selfie sticks.

Winner of the 2017 Edinburgh Comedy Award and double Chortle Award-winner, comedian, John Robins, reflects on love, loss and lamenting the fact he can’t break up with himself.

Not so small-egoed Frank believes he’s created a superior show, using his encore-worthy talent. Come and see for yourself.

John would love to promise The Darkness Of Robins won’t be an hour-long yell of a show, but he can’t. He’ll shout, snarl and sneer in his attempts to grapple with life’s fall-outs in what promises to be a pivotal moment in his being. Powerful, angst-ridden comedy at its finest, this is a must-see from one of the UK’s brightest talents.

In some instances, ticket prices and available discounts are dictated by external promoters and there is no flexibility for the provision of discounts. This page represents our usual discounts, however there are a number of shows every season where slightly different concessions apply. A separate discount and pricing structure applies to our Orchestral Season. Box Office will advise if these exceptions affect your tickets at time of booking. Only one concession type applies per ticket. All concessions are subject to availability and some may only be available for a limited period. Proof of status will be required on the first purchase of a concessionary ticket and can be checked on any subsequent ticket purchase.
