CEO Message As this is my first CEO message, allow me to begin by saying how delighted I am to have moved to Victoria, British Columbia and this great museum and archives. It is true that I flew half way around the world to join the Royal BC Museum and just in my first month I can already see the strengths and potential of our work.

Victoria is not a sleepy village as one resident described it to me – I look at it as the centre of another world focused on the Pacific and the West Coast of Canada.

A glance at our First Peoples Gallery and our Natural History Galleries clearly makes that point as do the complex interactions of geography, geology and climate, which have created a unique ecology celebrated not just in the three UNESCO World Heritage sites in British Columbia but in our everyday research and work with collections and archives.

I see the potential for the Royal BC Museum to become a stronger player and voice on the Canadian and world stage. Our scientific work, for example, acts as an early warning system for climate change. The widely acclaimed work of Dr Richard Hebda is of international significance in this regard.

Meanwhile, this summer we open a temporary showcase for our work in downtown Vancouver. Curious: The Royal BC Museum at Wing Sang is a new exhibition in Vancouver’s Chinatown, which presents carefully selected highlights from our painting, human and natural history collections. Simultaneously in Victoria, we premiere the first ever showing in Canada of Dinosaurs: Ancient Fossils, New Discoveries from the collections of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Additionally, we launch Queen Elizabeth II by Cecil Beaton: A Diamond Jubilee Celebration in partnership with the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The latter explores Beaton’s long relationship with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who he first photographed in 1942.

oyalty reigns this summer with Queen Elizabeth II by Cecil Beaton: A Diamond Jubilee Celebration from the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. The exhibition opens here on June 1, just one day before the huge celebration in the UK of the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne in 1952.

Cecil Beaton’s chronicle of royal portraiture began much earlier, as far back as 1939. The flamboyant fashion photographer always kept a diary, and recorded his first call from the palace: “The telephone rang, ‘This is the lady-in-waiting speaking. The Queen wants to know if you will photograph her tomorrow afternoon.’ At first, I thought it might be a practical joke… but it was no joke.” The now late Queen Mother had seen Beaton’s work for Vogue magazine and this was the beginning of his status as favoured royal photographer for the next 40 years.

Susanna Brown is Curator of Photographs at the V&A. She has written about Beaton’s attempts – as a 12-year-old with a No. 3A Folding Pocket Kodak – to recreate the look of society portraits. He substituted his two sisters for stars of stage and screen and accessorized with his mother’s ornaments and flowers. His early settings were often inspired by the magazine Vanity Fair.

Queen Elizabeth II, Buckingham Palace, 1968 1922 to 1925, Beaton was a student of Art History and Architecture at Cambridge, though he spent little time at lectures, favouring photography, theatrical clubs and new friendships.

He was exposed to the work of well-known painters and sought to emulate their styles. By the mid1920s he was using professional lighting techniques and composed his photographs with an artist’s eye. He signed a first contract with Vogue for both photographs and illustrations; the images were elegant and romantic and led to his solo exhibition in 1927.

The Sunday Herald was enthusiastic: “I found the work of this clever and unconventional artist, who is not yet twenty, very refreshing…” Cecil Beaton was the talk of the town. Over the next 10 years he photographed many famous people, including Pablo Picasso, Marlene Dietrich and Salvador Dali, as well as members of the extended royal family.

But his real fame came with the call to photograph Queen Elizabeth, Consort to King George VI. His instant rapport with the woman that most of us knew as the Queen Mother resulted in his long association with the royal family.

Beaton’s creative yet balanced portrayal of humanity and splendour shaped the world’s perception of the royal family during the Second World War. His photographs came to signify the magnificence of Empire and continuity with pre-war Britain,

compelling imagery in a turbulent time. He first captured the young Princess Elizabeth in 1942, when she was still a teenager. Her father had made her the Colonel of the Grenadier Guards. She wore an embroidered grenade on her cap, the Regimental cypher diamond brooch on her jacket, and was casually seated in front of a French rococo-style painted backdrop.

The image appeared on the cover of Life magazine in February 1943.

But the most important photographs of Beaton’s career were those taken on June 2, 1953. Though he had only a few minutes to create his coronation portraits of Queen Elizabeth II, they convey absolute splendour and radiance. Equally wonderful are his black and white shots of the Queen as a mother at home with her children: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Edward and Prince Andrew. Beaton’s final portraits of Elizabeth II were created in 1968, though he continued to photograph other House of Windsor family members as late as 1979. He died in 1980.

Throughout his long association with the royal family, Cecil Beaton maintained a harmony of elegance, chic and eccentricity. Extracts from his photographs, diaries, personal letters and press clippings – part of the exhibition – tell of a magnificent collaboration between crown and camera.

research and findings are also presented with some material that have never been on public view before.

Artifact|Artifiction Test wits with our curators Just for fun, visitors are invited to pick up a game card and play a miniversion of the Royal BC Museum’s annual gala game. Each of the 14 items on display in this room will come with a curator’s statement – but is it Artifact? or Artifiction? All items are from the museum and archive’s collection, but the tale told about each may be true or false.

Magic Lantern British Columbia seen through glass In a time before colour photography, black images on glass were handtinted and projected by a “magic lantern.” The 1850s to 1930s was

the era of lantern slides and most were made to instruct or entertain audiences. Enlarged backlit slide images selected from the Royal BC Museum’s collection will be on display.

Bottled Beauty Creatures from the collection One hundred creatures the colour of pale peanut butter, pickled in jars then artfully uplit in a darkened room. A Western Fox Snake, Bell-headed Tailed Jelly and Great Basin Pocket Mouse are just three specimens from the “wet collection,” thousands of animals preserved in alcohol, some of them dating back to the 1800s.

A Conversation with Jack L

et’s start at the beginning. Given all your international experience why did you choose Victoria?

I often think places choose me and in this sense I was immensely drawn to the museum and archives and this pull to the city. Victoria has a great magic about it with its breath-taking location. The Royal BC Museum and the city touched me almost immediately. I was not really looking to move, I had significant programs in development at the Museum of London and was gearing up for London 2012 but I was drawn by the potential of the Royal BC Museum.

As many will know, I have a strong passion for First Nations’ art and I am convinced that we have a very important collection that now needs to be put on a world stage.

Had you visited the museum and archives previously?

Yes, I had visited the Royal BC Museum in the 1990s when I was working in South Africa as Chief Executive of Iziko Museums, a group of 15 national museums. I visited a number of Canadian museums to see how they were dealing with the issues of linguistic diversity. This was at a time you must remember when the new South Africa was embracing democracy and rediscovering its own past. I still remember the canoe in the Royal BC Museum’s entrance and was disappointed when I returned that it had gone.

I mentioned your international experience; tell me more about your connections to other museums.

First you should know that I am an avid supporter of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and was their UK Chairman for six years. In that time I played a part in reviewing the global strategy of ICOM and was a

member of the search committee for the Director General. I was also on the board of the UK National Commission of UNESCO’s Culture Committee.

These two global organizations provided me with a strong connection to the world. I am the Chairman of the National Museum in Warsaw, Poland and sit on the board of other museums including the National Museums of Rwanda. And then I advise a number of governments on museum development. I feel all these connections will set me up well to position the Royal BC Museum internationally.

What are some of the museum accomplishments you have been most proud of so far in your career?

I am most proud of having successfully mentored a number of younger museum professionals.

Through my academic and teaching work at the Bergen National Academy of the Arts in Norway, Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt and Havana University, Cuba and I have grown a small group of mentees, many of whom are progressing well with their careers. Perhaps the best example is Alphonse Bartson Umuliisa who heads up the National Museums of Rwanda. Of course, I am hugely proud of my achievements in London but equally have learnt that these are not achievements of one individual but great team work. And as someone passionate about collections and archives, I cannot resist the chase for a wonderful object and bringing it to the attention of the public. I cannot forget the moment I discovered the circular 18th century table on which William Wilberforce drafted the Abolition Bill, which now is the centre piece of the Museum of London Docklands.

You obviously have a passion for culture, where does this passion come from?

Both my parents were architects and museum designers. I clearly inherited

their love of design and culture. They both took part in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 and then managed to escape as refugees to London. They studied Architecture and after meeting, created their own architectural practice in London. I grew up working with them and seeing how exhibitions and buildings are put together.

I understand you have a love of languages as well?

It would be fair to say I have a love of literature and that is what drew me to languages. I speak nine; I grew up speaking Polish, French and English.

I since acquired a few others. My objective – and my accomplishment – has always been to read. There is immense satisfaction at picking up a newspaper or book in another language and enjoying it. If I had not fallen in love with museums, I would probably have ended up using those languages – perhaps as a translator of great books.

I know you have just arrived but I am curious, do you already have a vision for the Royal BC Museum?

Having the vision is the easy part.

Everyone can see the potential of our museum and archives as a world class, ambitious and international institution. What is harder is making it all happen and this is where I will be adding value to the team at the Royal BC Museum.

Ancient Tools for Modern Times Grant Keddie and Lisa Bengston

I

n our modern times we take for granted the everyday tools that make our lives easy. When we pull a knife out of the kitchen drawer we don’t stop to consider where it came from, how it was made, or even why it is ergonomically efficient.

We just use it. There’s a new exhibition at the Royal BC Museum that will compel us to step back and consider how tools evolve. We are given an opportunity to examine the historical ingenuity of the First Nations’ use of raw materials in the design of objects that ensured their survival and enhanced their lives.

Grant Keddie, Curator of Archaeology, described with enthusiasm the team effort in mounting this exhibition of over 722 ancient artifacts. He spoke to the mandate of the exhibition to include an educational component that allows us to explore the social bond we have with the raw materials we use. For example, historically antlers, bones and pelts were prevalent resources used by First Nations; at the same time animals were also entrenched in the spiritual aspect of their culture. And we continue, in modern day, to physically identify with animals – simply look at the use of animal icons on the various professional hockey shirts that evoke our emotional support!

In addition to the research and the design of an exhibition at the Royal BC Museum, significant resources need to be assigned to the conservation of the artifacts.

Lisa Bengston, Object Conservator, has been heading up this side of the First Nations’ Ancient Artifacts exhibition. While we may throw that knife into a drawer with no thought to its longevity, this is not the case with historical artifacts. Lisa has provided the conservation guidelines necessary to ensure a stable display environment that considers temperature, humidity, light, physical support, airborne pollutants and even insects. As well, she and her team have painstakingly examined each artifact which includes a condition report, a photograph and any necessary treatments before the objects are displayed. Given that to date there have been more than 722 of them, commitment to detail is the order of the day.

This stone bowl was found on the central coast of British Columbia, the exact provenience and age are unknown. What we do know is that this bowl was made by a combination of techniques. First it was pecked into form, and then the figures were incised into its surface.

Michael Damant

M

ichael’s knowledge of the museum is vast; not only because he has volunteered here for nearly 16 years but because he has spent a lot of time here with his children and grandchildren. His favourite areas are the First Peoples Gallery and feature exhibitions, he was particularly fond of Leonardo and Titanic.

A visit to the Royal BC Museum is always a first stop for his out-of-town guests.

He says the museum and archives are “a proud feature of not only Victoria or British Columbia but of Canada.”

Born and raised in South Africa, Michael moved to Canada with his wife in 1975.

They lived in Ontario before moving to Victoria a year later. Michael qualified as a Chartered Accountant in both England and South Africa. He spent many years working for Price Waterhouse, then later as Director of Finance at Camosun College.

He had volunteered at several organizations before coming to the Royal BC Museum. He first started volunteering at the Royal Museum Shop which gave him the opportunity to learn more about First Nations art. Michael would talk to the artists in the (former) Carving Shed and learn about their craft and their stories. He was then able to apply this learning when selling original art works.

After volunteering for the Royal Museum Shop, Michael worked with the Marketing and Communications team, helping in media relations and our special exhibition Free Spirit: Stories of You, Me and BC where he helped gather stories for the exhibition centrepiece the “Party”. He continues to volunteer in Marketing, helping in the Membership Department as well as in the Volunteer Library. He loves getting his museum fix twice a week, and we appreciate his dedication.

Camille Cuthill

Director, Development

C

amille joined the Royal BC Museum team in February of this year, bringing more than 25 years of experience to her new role as Director, Development. Most recently with the University of Victoria as Director, Special Projects, Camille’s diverse fundraising and volunteer background is an asset to the museum and archives.

She has taken the lead on capital projects like the Bissell Centre in Edmonton, the Royal University Hospital Foundation in Saskatoon, and the BC Cancer Agency, Vancouver Island’s Trev & Joyce Deeley Research Centre.

Camille feels that a museum is the heart and soul of a community – it gives us a sense of where we come from and where we are going as a society. She thinks it is an extraordinarily exciting time to join the Royal BC Museum. As we enter a new phase in our history with a new CEO at the helm and planning for a new collections building.

She is delighted to be working with her development team of Sean Rodman, Marilyn Wile and Robin Ashforth. She will be focusing her team on building existing initiatives and developing new and exciting ways to engage with the people of BC – including the redevelopment of our cultural precinct.

Camille takes a personal interest in animals and their rightful place in our world.

She has volunteered with the SPCA and has three rescue felines making her house a home. An eager outdoorsperson, she enjoys west coast pursuits like camping, kayaking and gardening. Camille has been busy settling in here at Royal BC Museum but hopes to be able to make time soon to re-ignite her love of ballroom dancing!

Coat of Arms Coats of arms were used in the mid-12th century first by lords and knights and then on battlefields as a way to identify allies from enemy soldiers. As time went on they used these decorations on sleeveless garments that were worn over the soldiers armor, hence the name coat of arms. The designs became so complex, heraldry was developed. It is the science of personal symbols by which a knight could be recognized.

Below is the official coat of arms of Canada. It is modeled after the royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom but features distinctive Canadian elements.

CREST A crest is a component of a heraldic display, so called because it stands on top of a helmet, as the crest of a jay stands on the bird’s head. Canada’s coat of arms consists of a wreath of twisted white and red silk on which stands a crowned gold lion holding in its right paw a red maple leaf. The lion is a symbol of valour and courage.

Silly Fill-in With a friend or family’s help fill in the blanks and then read it out loud for a laugh.

I was selected by my school to make a gift to give to the Queen for her Diamond Jubilee. I wanted to make something really special so I started by collecting ___________________ from my classmates. Then I took these to the chemistry lab where I mixed it with plural noun

These figures can be real or imaginary animals, human figures, plants or objects. On Canada’s coat of arms the supporters are the English Lion which symbolizes courage and fearlessness and the Scottish unicorn which symbolizes fierceness, strength, and purity.
